A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

We Get One

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on May 16, 2024

And with that win, we stave off a double digit number out of first place in the NL West. But honestly, going 3-3 against Cinn and LA is about the best we could have hoped for. Especially after losing JHL for the season.

What is a realistic goal at this point? .500? Sounds about right.

I think that would be a high water mark. But as I have said I’m fine if we now spend the year with Ramos and Matos play every day or nearly every day and Soriano needs his starts. Anyone out there who wants Chapman and Conforto when healthy???

  2. willedav's avatar willedav said, on May 16, 2024 at 7:29 am

6 teams got shutout yesterday and half the league scored 2 runs or less. 3 teams that scored 2 won their game. Giants get good enough pitching and D they can at least be in torture games, win or lose.

Current NL WC team #3 would be…Padres at 22-24 who just got swept at home by Rockies, who shut them out 8-0 yesterday. 2 days before rox pitchers walked 11 and still won 5-4, as Machado hit into game ending DP w bases loaded. That’s w Machado Tatis Jr. Bogaerts and Arraez. New manager, same results.

Saw this on MCC site last night, from NorCalAlli: “That wall is eating our players.”

Yeah, they’d need the pitching to be lights-out to get to .500.

Hey who knows? Maybe everyone comes back healthy and hitting.

Casali should help C position a lot, maybe even Bailey too once he’s back. No more passed balls and offline throws to 2b on steals. Remember too Giants last run came after Wade Jr. walked and then Smith let ball go by him to allow Wade Jr. to get to second where he scored on Matos base hit.

Once he gets acclimated to rest of staff Casali can be big help to all of them. Webb Tyler Rogers and Doval are only guys left from 2021-22 before they traded him to M’s August 2022.

    • xoot's avatar xoot said, on May 16, 2024 at 10:36 am

I think the writers and tv heads were right about Casali’s important role in Webb’s first inning escape. All night he speared and blocked pitches that Reetz or Sabol would’ve botched. He also made a smooth pro play on a dribbler in front of the plate that I wouldn’t be pleased to see either of them try. He’s much better back there than Clank Murphy. Hell, even his modest offense was better last night. Smart move to bring him back., imo.

Yeah your right Blade, Casali still has game and experience this catching position truly needs and probably make good throws to second.Good pickup with Bailey out.Stuck with Sabol for now who doesn’t know how to throw a god Damm throw second are block pitches. But still better then useless Reetz.
I was half joking about Catcher Eric “Krispy Kratz” who’s 40 now?But with the “Giants Dumb Way” might of gotten a call lol 😂

  9. willedav's avatar willedav said, on May 16, 2024 at 2:34 pm

Webb threw more fastballs and fewer changeups, and he got most of the changes down below K zone where they need to be. Came inside a bit more often too.

Just me or were Dogs pitchers jamming Giants hitters inside too? Lot of popups. Schmitt, idk, 3-22. Couple ABs all he saw were sliders and he’s not picking them up–letting the strikes go and swinging at the ones outside zone. Hope Luciano gets some ABs this weekend and maybe Schmitt gets a game at 3b to give Chapman a rest.

  10. alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 said, on May 16, 2024 at 3:15 pm

Yeah Schmitt was Damm lucky getting that game winning hit against Reds pitcher who made him look silly on sliders getting him 0-2 then for some dumb reason he threw him a meat fastball that he drilled in the gap.3-22 yikes he looks overmatched again, due like his defense but needs better contact of course is team wide except Wade..

With all the current injuries and what will probably be season-long comings and goings of players, it’s kind of hard to tell what might be a realistic goal for the team’s W-L record. Getting to .500 is certainly a worthwhile goal, and it might even be good enough to sneak into a WC spot. Seems like a lot of other teams are sucking, so the key number for the G’s might not be W-L but rather games within shot of the WC. With all the gnashing of teeth about this team, they’re amazingly only 1.5 games out of the WC right now…

  17. willedav's avatar willedav said, on May 16, 2024 at 6:08 pm

Notice more teams talking about 6 man rotation–more rest for SPs maybe mean they can go longer each start and remain healthy. I would like to see MLB cut down amount of pitchers on staff by at least 1, maybe 2. This would provide extra jobs for position players and would allow for more specialization as in pure defensive players, pinch runners and PHs.

I’m hearing conflicting reports on this. It appears he may have been trying a “do you know who I am?” thing with a non-golfing Louisville cop to get around the traffic jam preventing him from getting to the golf course. It’s probably a mix of that and a southern cop playing the power trip role. Book it that in a couple of months he’ll pay a fine to highly reduced charge(s) and that will be the end of it. If it were Tiger, the cop probably would have started beating the hell out of him…

But I take your point. At best, it’s puzzling. They certainly make an effort to sign Carribean (and beyond) players. They signed 20 as soon as the int’l draft period opened this past January.

How many players have we called up that can’t run bases? Can’t track fly balls? Don’t throw to the right base? Was it Gonzalez that got thrown out at 2nd on a sac fly play to take a run away from the team? Ludicrous.

Even Estrada getting thrown out at 3rd for the last out of an inning a few games ago.

“First baseman Wilmer Flores, who is slashing just .207/.289/.288 in 111 at bats so far, has a $3.5 million player option for next season. Starter Robbie Ray, who was acquired via trade but has yet to pitch this season as he recovers from Tommy John surgery, has a $25 million player option for next season. Snell has a $38.5 million player option for next season and Chapman has a $17.6 million one, plus an $18.6 million one for 2026.

That’s more than $84.5 million hanging in the balance for 2025 as these players determine whether or not they’d like to test the market again.”

Outstanding story about a great Giant, Kevin Pillar . . .

“In baseball, most instances of bad news come with a silver lining. For the Angels, the primary beneficiary of Mike Trout‘s injury has been veteran Kevin Pillar. Pillar began the season with the wretched White Sox, a team so bereft of power bats that they used Pillar as a cleanup hitter five times. Prior to this season, he had started a game in the four-spot just five times during a big league career that began in 2013.

After Pillar rejected an outright assignment by Chicago and became a free agent, he latched on with an Angels squad desperate for bodies. Since then, Pillar has not just hit like a cleanup hitter, he’s kind of hit like Trout. In fact, manager Ron Washington has also used Pillar in the cleanup slot, including on May 13 when he hit a two-run homer against St. Louis. In 10 games as an Angel, he has hit .455 with three homers and 14 RBIs. Very Trout-like.”

Rodriguez certainly has heat like Doval just needs more consistent control.Still he stuffed them in the end and they saved Doval. End of the Rockies 7 game streak and on with are 2 lol 😂

In the midst of that awful 10-2 loss to the Dodgers, Rodriguez’s performance was a little silver lining to the cloud.

More BBs 6 than Ks 5 last night for SF hitters.

Hope Flav got chance to see Walker last night, who was really good in his inning. It did take 7 pitchers but Rodriguez finally ended Rox night.

Yeah, Rodriguez has some gas. A little wild but he got it done. The pen is slowly turning into something resembling a solid group. Teylor still annoys me, and his twin is what he is. We’ll see. Got to beat up on the hapless Rox while we can and Soler/Chapman need to hit.

Miller is the one that bugs me. Game log for May shows he’s pitched 8 innings and walked 8 guys. Only given up 3 hits but all 3 are HRs.

Overall in 21 innings he’s only given up 9 hits but he’s walked 14. Command, eh?

And it was upsetting that Rodriguez walked the first guy he faced with 5 run lead in 9th, and they had to get Doval up and throwing again. that should have been kid’s first goal, make sure that wasn’t gonna happen.

Back from a trip tp St Andrews. Played the Old Course and 4 others. A must for any golfers at the Flap! Go Giants! Injuries bad. Maybe a sort of good thing. To Snarkks point, we still have no clue about these guys despite be prospects for so long. As a PT (and a good human) I never like injuries, but we need Slater to be out a LONG time so Matos can get some consistent AB’s.

    Some stats to review…

1/4 of the way through the season (145 AB’s x 4 is 580 for the year) Lee numbers for the year current stats x 4

    580 AB’s .262 60 runs 32 RBI’s 40 walks 52 K’s 8 HR’s 8 SB’s

The optimistic view in a VERY short sample is Matos is helping WAY more. Yes Lee is a much better fielder. Everyone is optimistic Lee would hit better as he gained more knowledge of the US game. Hopefully true, but also could go the other way some. If it does then Lee would be a huge bust considering the salary…

Agree to what you said about Lee potentially being a “huge bust” going forward (as I indicated a couple of days ago). Ideally, he would have learned the “MLB game” this season. Now, his “education” is delayed for an entire season, coupled with the fact, that it will be nearly 2 seasons since he played a full season . . . Worse, this full season was in the easier S. Korean league. Just a lot to overcome for someone from a foreign country. Anyway, shit happens. Not his fault, but it seems the Giants got snake bit here.

Sorry by “these guys” I meant Giant prospects:)

    Missed the game last night.

Just looked at game recap on MLB.com

Pretty squirrely game, but hey, Giants somehow got some hitting shoes. Matos looks like he did with the bat in STraining. Let him play, we’ll need to just ride out the defense miscues and hope he gets coached up. Ramos looks alternatively great on D, then clueless, but give both of them time to get used to the ballpark. I will take either of them over Slater 8 days a week…

My gut sense is that Ramos has played better D in day games–and some of it spectacular. LFer does have those high LEDs to contend with. Maybe he needs to settle in. This ain’t the RC/a’s park in Sac.

    1. Cobb shut down for indeterminate period. Shoulder trouble unresolved.
    2. Soler at leadoff. Huh?
    • Macdog's avatar Macdog said, on May 18, 2024 at 11:37 am

A head-scratcher for sure about Soler, but he did get on base (single, walk) in 2 of his 5 PAs. He’s leadoff again today.

    Just watching the highlights and:

Soler throws to the wrong base on the base hit. Chapman steals 3rd with 2 outs. Why?

Neither made a diff in the long run but I just get tired of seeing these early early early little league axioms being ignored.

    • xoot's avatar xoot said, on May 18, 2024 at 11:52 am

Enforce them axioms! Chapman was safe and Ramos came relatively close to nailing the runner at 3B. Granted, however, that the throwing decision was consistent with his glove gaffes out there.
