All Rise
Agree with what others said on the last thread, especially with Stanton getting the day off how do you give Judge anything to hit? It’s like the Giants have no recollection at all of how teams treated Bonds. And honestly, if you’ve got no Stanton and you take Judge out of the equation they aren’t that scary of a team….after Soto. LOL. Ok, I guess they’re stacked. Webb isn’t gonna throw shit for Judge to hit today, book it.
June 1st. Reminds me of my Dad (RIP). Lifelong Giants fan who was crushed when Giants moved west in ‘58. But his loyalty never wavered. Took me to games when Giants came east – old Connie Mack Stadium and the Vet in Philly and Shea of course. That’s how I became Giants fan and passed along allegiance to my son years later.
Dad like to remind me that May was typically month Giants prospered followed by the dreaded June Swoon. I’ve got no idea what Giants all-time record in May and June is and whether this is just legend with no factual basis behind it.
Wonder whether others in Flavor nation are familiar with June Swoon and whether Dad’s belief that Giants owned month of May has any currency.
In top heavy, mediocre overall NL, Giants at .500 still have 6th best record. Hopefully at least split of next two with Pinstripes and no June Swoon.
June swoon is real, at least it has been for quite a few season in my life. Pretty much standard conversation when talking about the Giants.
More of a 60s-70s thing. Course a lot of seasons were swoons.
My Dad was a 60’s/70’s guy so that might explain it.
Yeah, it probably is more of a 60’s and 70’s thing. When I was a kid I never could understand how we could have a losing record in June with the lineup we had.
2014. Giants were in first by seven games on May 31; up by only half a game after 10-16 in June.
Middle of June they lost nine of ten, including the Father’s Day game my kids took me to.
I think this goes back long way, to 60s and possibly newspaper writers covering them at time. 1960 for example, Giants went 16-11 in May/11-16 in June. Throughout the decade they typically played very well in May/fell off a bit in june.
In odd years 63 65 and 67 Giants went 19-9 19-11 17-10 in May and played “only” .500 ball or slightly worse in June. 61 and 62 16-10 and 20-10 in May/ 15-15 and 16-13 (worst month all season when they won 103 and NL pennant) in June.
Easiest way to do this off Baseball/Reference is to click on Schedule and Results for any particular year and then go to Win/Loss Splits which gives you month to month etc.
Willedav…Thanks for trip down ‘60’s memory lane. Good history.
Dean you’re welcome. 60s were great years to be alive (watched Game 7 1962 in 6th grade class) and following NL, with all the great black and Caribbean players on each team, Giants included. so many AL teams much slower to integrate, which didn’t do them well in AS games.
1972 – 1986 was pretty much a Giants “swoon”…
Scoring 4 runs in 3 days hopefully is not harbinger of dreaded June Swoon. Last year Giants went 18-8 in June and plus 40 run differential, followed by 3 months all under .500.
As James noted, Matos numbers have indeed plummeted. 4-34 with 2 BBs isn’t what you want out of leadoff, or anyone for that matter. GIDP last night part of forgettable overall performance by all though his OF play has improved a lot.
Part of the problem w Soler not hitting is that he takes up roster spot from someone else that could be DH and be rotated in out as position player. When roster crunch comes as injured return, someone that can fill in defensively will have to be sacrificed, back to Sac or released.
Yes big point about pitching around Judge. Even walking him in 3rd to load bases would not have been bad move, setting up forces anywhere including home and keeping DP option alive. Alex Verdugo hit behind him last night went 0-4 last night and is .256 hitter. Behind him is Gleyber Torres at .229. sigh
What was funny, and I think what Hicks wanted to do, was simply walk him once he got to the 3-2 count was Krukow saying “he doesn’t need to pitch to him” as he grooves a dead fish that Judge jacks.
The 2nd one? Utter dumbness. The diff in the game was pitching to the one guy they shouldn’t have.
If Judge is hitting with nobody on, pitch to him, but give him nothing near the zone. If he’s up with a man or two on, I’d just hold up 4 fingers…
Couple winners at Churchill Downs today for Flavien Prat. Bunch of stakes racing at back end of card w lot of top riders in action.
Confirmed LU…. 199 are you are out of your mind Soler eclipse not starting.
Matos CF
Flores 1B
Bailey C
Chapman 3B
Yaz RF
Ramos LF
Brooks&Dunn DH
Schmitt SS
Wisely 2B
Webb P
Slater, Ahmed and Conforto starting for Sac tonight. Snap out of it, Matos.
Soler needs to break out. He’s done absolutely squat in 2 months. If he were even just productive every once in a while, instead of never, there would be more umphhh to the offensive feeling…
Soler eclipse needs to bat 8th. Or even 9th. And hit his way back up the lineup.
or not at all! Just saw the lineup…
the injury to Soler’s ego could’ve been much worse without the thick padding in his bank accounts.
My theory regarding the June Swoon back in the old days is that the Giants never had great depth in their pitching staff. By the time the season got to June, the pitchers not named Marichal and Perry would start to wear down and falter.
Bore core types are rehabbing in Sac. Oh joy.
I’d rather watch the young guys on the MLB team try to figure things out, even if it’s a struggle.
I’m pretty sure that’s what everyone wants
Possible exception of Ramos (and Bailey) Conforto is best hitter on team (w Wade Jr. out)…that has scored 4 runs in 3 games. No reason to cut off nose.
Well we need a good DH
I’m feeling good about tonight’s game. Want to see the Giants put a hurting on the Yanks. Like the Phils, they can be beat and now is a good time to do it.
Ah Chapman!
Holy shit, move the fences back, way back.
Fuck. Webb should heave heeded BF’s advice.
“Location mistake.”
After striking out, Judge hits an HR.
Electronic ball and strike calls, please. Stop the stupid reliance on these umps.
Get those runs back, Giants.
And just like another Judgement day Bomb 💣 2-0
That Rocket 🚀 by Judge is still in orbit!
Yeah that’s it Giants keep pitching to him and get burned..
Webb had already gotten three strikes on Judge. I can’t blame him for thinking he could get a fourth one.
why were they not listening to Flav???
That high strike/ball call on Judge was odd. Is his zone really that large? Guess so. It would’ve been strike two and surely would’ve altered the AB. But Webb’s hanging change sucked.
Judge is the hottest hitter on the planet he just broke some guy named Lou Gehrig for the month of May in HR’s doubles and now has reached base in 28 STRAIGHT GAMES but yeah keep pitching to him..
No one playing over there. Hanging slider from Webb gets raked for double.
Krukow says “battin’ title, pitchin’ coach, etc.” Why does he talk that way? He grew up in Southern Calif. I’m saying it’s fake folksiness.
he comes from a working class family. We all talk dat way.
Ramos plays a good LF. He covers ground and his strong arm is accurate. He belongs out there.
Ah finally.
pfffffft. Headed back to suck town.
There you go!
Got a couple back. Dat dere is some good shit.
Schmitt’s wet noodle bat al dentes up.
Schmitty!! Boy did they need that bomb!!
So it’s up to the “Ace” to hold Yanks down and give SF chance to come back and take this game. Can’t change what’s already happened but few shut down innings would be big.
Ramos stayed with dat one. Nice catch.
oh shit that ball in front of him. Matos botched too many of those last year. I hate it when these kids fuck up.
Webb picks Matos up.
yes he does. But Slater’s scratchin at the door.
Yeesh.
Scored a hit and an airmail
More of that stellar MLB umping.
Schmitt flyout after ball 4. Now another ump fuck-up.
Heliot’s so quick the umps can’t follow him. We’re back in the game.
Nice shot from Wisely. Need another shutdown inning from Webb. This ain’t over.
Good hitten by Wisely.
A Wise decision getting Ramos in Brett!4-3
10 pitch inning nicely done. Give Webb credit for shut down innings.
Wimet just needed a bat a foot longer, that was a pathetic AB..
the Bass Tub looks like chum to me. There’s gotta be a better party boat out there.
That dude in the Bass Tub with the glasses sucking a beer I thought was Miami Dolphins HC Mike McDaniel a dead ringer..
Dang. cbs site said 3 cutters and fastball at 94 in Ramos AB.
come on Soler, bomb the chum tub in the bay. Be the first RH to do that. Whew. At least you beat out the DP.
.198 enough said
I get it. A judge in a kayak.
SS continues to be a problem…
Wisely’s playing 2B.
The talent divide rears up its ugly head…
And Ballgame! Remember Speedy oil&filter change before your road-trip to NY..
Yaz modeled that puzzling straw hat well.
shoulda seen some of the shit Barry Zito wore during his fashion model days.
And to think the ever exciting Blake Snell start is tomorrow!
Aaron Gordon’s brother has died in a car accident. Very sad news.
I like watching Gordon play ball. The Kings could use a physical player like that.
Sabonis is very physical, too, but a team needs more than one player like that.
June swoon off and running. I feel like a kid again…
Tough to tell from replay. Anyone think Ramos should have caught the verdugo fly?
Matos?
Sucks to see other teams clowning on our field but the talent gap between these teams is grand canyonesque.
