A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Rough Patch

6 games down. BoMel went off in the post game presser but I don’t see what good it will do. Farhan has built a team that, shockingly, isn’t good at anything. We are slow. We are weak. We play bad defense. And worse yet, no one seems to give a shit except maybe Webb.

I’ll say again that Ahmed’s injury caught Farhan flat footed with no legitimate or ready shortstop to take the position. Accordingly, the position has been a disaster. SS is a foundational defense position, bad play there sets a bad tone. That’s not Melvin’s fault, he can only try there the pieces he’s given…

Looked good on paper, but the show on the field is fair to poor. Soler and OTS being the biggest disappointments. 29-27 looks like the high-water mark. Defense is an actual joke. How many players can come up from AAA and be absolute butchers?

  3. willedav's avatar willedav said, on June 5, 2024 at 8:48 am

Harrison did make it through 6 and deserved better fate. Got some Ks with changeup and kept ball in the yard. Was 4-2 game when he left. Giants have played all the guys who were in Sac or previously in AA ball at same position (Luciano Fitz Schmitt), and as Zum said none of them have done well enough defensively to take the job from Ahmed, a guy I can fully live with.

seems like plan was to give Luciano time in Sac (34 games this year after 18 last year and 56 in Richmond) before Ahmed got hurt May 9. At that point Luci was next man up.

Errors at SS will kill you, but losing your likely rep in the AS game to a hamstring strain will too.

      • willedav's avatar willedav said, on June 5, 2024 at 10:11 am

Definitely. Z tried to add regular CF, SS power hitting DH and 3b (and pitching) in off season with only partial success. Losing highest OB guy in league with all the other injuries hurts.

“Felicidades a Mr. Afinque” from former lead singer Gilberto Santa Rosa to bandleader Willie Rosario May 6 2024 on his 100th birthday. Loved his music since 1975 LP “Otra Vez”. Was listening to vid of hit “Anuncio Classificado” with singer Primi Cruz from 1990 last night as things went south in game, and noticed in comments I’d missed b-day. Always loved the sound w front line of 3-4 trumpets and baritone sax by guys like Shep Pullman and Jose “Beto” Tirado.

  5. alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 said, on June 5, 2024 at 8:56 am

You can say the same about Wade. His injury is even more worse then the 3 Stooges playing SS.I really appreciate Mr.Ed He’s been clutch money for years with the Giants but his best baseball is behind him unfortunately.Giants can’t sadly manage squat without him spark starting this LU.I never could figure out this team even in the past like Pagan, one guy goes out and the whole team sulks and craters..

Only 2 guys have stepped it up and it’s Ramos&Chapman you need more than that to win games other then Bailey staying consistent I don’t see anyone else doing the job.

And wtf did Melvin start Conforto over Fitzgerald against the Lefty? He got his 0-4 the prior not against a RH pitcher now another 0-4 and fuck this that Melvin probably wants to get him as many AB’s BS right now!

And Also FUCK having Luke I give up Nukes Jackson on this pitching staff. His stuff is beyond terrible, batting practice meatballs every opponent is licking their chops and running to the bat rack to face his sorry ass.I’m praying he’s one of the next DFA moves and take that 6.66 Exorcist ERA to a place like Pittsburgh are Whitesox’s where careers end like yours..

From what I read, Pat the Bat said Bonds helped Chapman get out of his slump, maybe Barry should work with Soler a bit as well. And I don’t know who the infield coach is, but maybe Matty could drill some shit into these guys.

      • Macdog's avatar Macdog said, on June 5, 2024 at 10:15 am

Williams did play some SS early in his career, it couldn’t hurt.

      • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on June 5, 2024 at 10:22 am

I heard Matt Williams say on KNBR about 10 days ago that he is the infield coach. So, I don’t know what that makes Wotus, he was the infield guru for about 2 decades …

      • Locojuan's avatar Locojuan said, on June 5, 2024 at 11:50 am

Wotus was retired but I think they use him like a special assistant coach (like Bonds).

The Giants don’t have anyone listed as the INF coach, so it probably is Matt. Maybe Wotus should come in as the extra special INF coach.

  6. Winder's avatar Winder said, on June 5, 2024 at 9:00 am

From A-ball on up coaching should work on the basics for all position players. Batting practice wouldn’t hurt either.

Fitzgerald gets the 3 stooges SS spot today…

  9. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on June 5, 2024 at 11:50 am

Yeah nice play by Ramos. And lift off! Single (by Slater lol everyone’s whipping boy) HR single.

Luis Matos was 6-45 with 2 BBs. He has 2 HRs and 0 SBs. OB for season is 247. In other words no power no speed can’t get on base. Hasta. I hope he can figure things out, but no reason to give him “300 ABs” at ML level. None, with zero track record behind him-he’s getting his ass kicked at plate and pressing, with no discipline. Fitz at least can run and is better hitter.

LF Lourdes Gurriel Jr. is hitting .238 w OPS of .668. Last year in first season with DBax it was .772 and he had 24 HRs and 35 doubles. so far stuck on 8 HRs (including 1 Monday) 11 doubles.

  49. alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 said, on June 5, 2024 at 3:24 pm

OPS well over .900 now right? And he can run and field and throw too. Hmmmm. Conforto would be a good backup and LH DH. I’m afraid, however, we’ll see Ramos mainly in RF with Yaz and slater platooning CF.

    Well, what about Slater’s season?

    5-39!!!!! .128.

    Yeah, maybe he’ll get HOT!!!

Or maybe it’s more of the same shit till he pulls an eyelid in the on-deck circle.

    • willedav's avatar willedav said, on June 5, 2024 at 3:30 pm

Look at it this way–if he is OK on what limited ABs he’s going to get, Slater (who does have track record in career vs. LHP) could be moved. Matos and his .577 OPS, no but he still could be in play for next year or later this year if he can get regular PT and get himself together. Baggs said earlier Giants aren’t ready yet (key word) to dump Slater after 39 ABs this season. Yet, eh? There’s so many more important issues on this team, like starting pitching for one, than Slater. Obsessions over this guy by Giants fans are creepy.

    • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on June 5, 2024 at 3:39 pm

No, we are just tired of people carrying his jock or no particular reason. Like Belt for so long, there wasn’t much there and the mediocrity went on and on.

And it rings true what I said. Melvin is supposed to be the ‘baseball guy’. He’;’d bring back the fundamentals. He’d get us away from the errors, and platooning, and odd pitching changes.

The only issue I had with the NBA players was the tattoo thing got overboard for a while. Some players got tattoos on their necks and faces. It was unpleasant to look at.

Baseball had the problem of nauseating tabacco-spitting, which grossed out a lot of potential women viewers. Getting rid of the chewing tobacco was healthier for the players, but also made the sport easier to market to women.

      • xoot's avatar xoot said, on June 5, 2024 at 6:48 pm

The Beatles were an unstoppable force, like the Celtics in the 1960s. Millions of young people saw them on the Ed Sullivan show and the juggernaut was on. The Beatles didn’t need much typical marketing. A case could be made that their movies were marketing, but A Hard Day’s Night is a great movie in its own right. Roger Ebert included it in his list of the 25 best movies of all time. It runs quite often on the TCM network.
