Texas Time
Bochy series! Gotta hand it to Boch, he clearly is an outstanding manager. Personally I thought the game had passed him by but it turns out he just had shitty players. What he did in Texas last year was amazing.
The other day someone told me Willie Mays lives at the Vi which is a retirement community near my work. I was on a run before work yesterday and this car was in the Vi parking lot. A couple of cars down there was a car with the license plate “Bowties”. I wonder if that was PM’s widow’s car.

Irad rolling today.
“Bowtie” was Bill Neukom, right? forced out after Giants released Rowand at long last. Still alive age 82. Great pic of him and Chi w trophy in bucket.
he also traded for Beltran. Old man Johnson was suddenly vocal back then. He explained Neuk’s discharge by describing his moves as overreach–the types of unilateral decisions a CEO might make. “He wasn’t a CEO,” he said, in closing, iirc.
youre right! I wonder if he’s there too
Curious to see d lineup Melvin puts out there behind Webb tonight. If Ramos can play CF, vs. RHP like Lorenzen who goes tonight, OF corners could be Conforto and Yaz.
Bochy in 2010 ran Pat Burrell out there in LF for 86 games and in postseason, including WS.
2014 Boch’s LF in WS vs. Royals…Ishi and Juan Perez. 1 year later both had played in their last ML game by season’s end.
Saw note that on local channel the home game of Oakland Ballers of Pioneer League will be tonight. J T Snow is bench coach for them.
Their woman relief pitcher opened one of the recent home games.
Don’t worry. Slater gets the start in CF. Otherwise why bring him back at all if not to play?
Famous Ramos gets a rest despite being on fire.
*sigh*
Ramos in CF, 2 LHs in corners . Wisely at SS behind Webb
Huh! Early LU I saw had slater in CF and leading off. Hombre de Ferro Ramos!
not grammatically correct I know but good enough for gringos. Trill those rrrrs.
Yaz is probably as good in CF as in RF in most parks other than SF. Slater’s probably not as a good a backup option as Famous Fitzgerald.
since May 8 Ramos has played nine innings or more in 25 games and eight in the outlier. He hasn’t had a day off since the team took one on May 30. They also had an off day May 16. No wonder his wars so high, all those good innings piled on top of each other.
Which is to say, maybe he can use two days off in a row.
Nice post. Bochy sure could push the right buttons at times. I loved Rodger Craig but Bochy is definitely the best Giants coach in my lifetime. Mays is still the best baseball player in my lifetime also. Hope he lives to 100.
Any word on Luciano? He went on 10 day IL retro to May 30, so he’d be eligible to return by time Giants get back to town for 3 game series vs. Stros that begins Monday night.
He needs to take a couple more thousand grounders at SS and make throws to second and first with coaches timing his fielding quickness before he comes back. His sphincter puckers in late innings defense, he has to relax then and that only comes with playing a ton so he can face different leverage situations with mental preparation a key to the clutch D decisions to make in the field. I question after all this time in the minors whether he’s suited to be SS. I’d say that basic question is up in the air, still…
June 6 1931 borned day of guitarist Grant Green. Blue Note recordings as leader or sideman with many other great players so enjoyable. Sadly didn’t live to see 50.
reading through excellent “3 Shades of Blue” by James Kaplan profiling Miles Davis John Coltrane and Bill Evans lives as lead up to making of Kind of Blue, etc. Lot of interesting stories of these and other musicians producers and friends, and often one person’s version of an event differs from others.
uh oh. Vamos Ramos is the cable tv nickname. Back to the diccionario.
Wilmet!
Wilmet! 2 games 2 HRs. Read that Rangers only have 2 LHPs, so great sign for him.
pull out the stops!
See above!
lulz that’s awesome
Supra!
1sayhey, brilliant.
Thinking about a NC plate that says, 4sayhey.
Confort-O yeah!
HR #8 for Conforto, ties him w Chapman and Estrada for team lead.
Chapman has been to plate 100 more times. Estrada 75.
The Giants have not yet won a game 4-2 this year. It’s time for 8 strong from Webb and a dominant close out from Doval.
Stay hot Ramos!
Not a fan of the classic 4-2 score, eh?
I’ll take 5-2.
Victory!
Ball game. Gotta love the win here.
Solid pitching D and some bombs.
True dat, willie.
Nice column from Oaklandside on Ballers home opener at Raimondi Field Tuesday attended by 4,000 fans. There is pic of “A mural by Oakland artist Shomari Smith honoring baseball legends Frank Robinson, Curt Flood, Vada Pinson and Ernie Raimondi.”
Oakland LL played at Raimondi in a pinch before it fell into disrepair. I was used to that part of West Oakland and thought it was fine. A lot of the other parents weren’t. Some gentrification lately in the area where the double decker freeway collapsed in 89.
I was distracted for a while making a hot roast beef and caprese on toasted sourdough sandwich. Did Kruk and kuip say that Tyler Rogers is on track for the AS game?
Kruk said he should be in contention for an AS spot, he’s been that good.
Leads the league with 33 appearances, scored on in only 7 of those. I haven’t checked to see if that’s the best ratio in the league, but if not, it’s certainly up there. A while ago, Chuck pointed out that he’s allowed “67%” of his inherited runners to score. He’s entered just two games with runners on. One of those games was April 1st, when he inherited 2 runners that scored. He also gave up a run that game, so it’s one of the 7. The other game he inherited 1 runner who didn’t score.
Walker with 32 appearances, scored on 6 times. The two of them have been really good.
you gotta admit 67% sounds like a big number.
Every team gets at least one All Star, of course, so once Wade got injured, and Doval had a couple of bad outings, it became wide open for somebody, anybody.
Logan Webb will probably make the All Star team, and Rogers gets likely overlooked because he’s a set-up guy, which isn’t high profile enough.
Indy Fever at the last-place Mystics was the highest attended WNBA game in 17 years. The game was switched to the NBA arena because of high ticket sales.
When has a single player grown an entire league like that? Maybe Babe Ruth in the 1920s for MLB?
well it sure as shit wasn’t Jackie Robinson. African American attendance at dodger games rose, but white attendance declined.

David Zirin was mentioned on the Flap. Back in 2014, I went to the first Bay Area Book Festival, a new book festival. It’s a great weekend, but that’s the only year I went. One of the events in ’14 was a panel of sportswriters, and Zirin was on the panel. I had never heard of him. (The Nation magazine has a sportswriter? Who knew?) I liked a lot of what he said so I bought one of his books. I liked the book. He writes a lot about social issues in sports, which is to be expected working for The Nation.
Fun fact: Paul Newman donated millions of dollars to keep The Nation going. Iirc, Newman’s Own food profits still support the magazine. The book reviews alone are worth the price of admission.
1997 was the first season of the WNBA. Houston won the championship game. Yes, game. It wasn’t a series. One game, lulz.
The WNBA probably got ridiculed for that, so from ’97 to ’04, the championship was best 2 out of 3.
They probably got ridiculed for THAT, and so, since ’05, it’s been best 3 out of 5.
6 teams yesterday that scored 3 runs or less won their games.
4 teams in NL Central are within half game of each other and 3 in NL West are within game and a half. Best 2 of these 7 would be in playoffs as wild cards. Anybody’s game long way to go.
