Heaney is one of the 2 LHPs on Rangers staff, so expect RHs Fitz Schmitt Slater in starting lineup along with usual suspects. Fun fact: Last year 15 of 23 HRs hit by Flores came after AS break per Baggs in TA today.

George’s story parallels my own father’s. Another friend just got her Austrian citizenship through her mother, who also fled the Anschluss in 1938. That story is one of Finzi-Contini like tragedy.

    RIP.

Hot as a firecracker 🧨 Heliot Ramos 2 run HR!!! #6

He’s turning into one of the best outfielders and sluggers in the game!

Good to see Slater getting on twice a walk& single and scoring 2 runs I like those 2 at the top of the order especially against a Lefty.

    • xoot's avatar xoot said, on June 8, 2024 at 1:56 pm

Slater’s speed contributed to the first run. It’s not as if he’s a liability when used sparingly.

  12. xoot's avatar xoot said, on June 8, 2024 at 2:09 pm

I saw Ramos hard charging in the OF back in 22. I knew he could take command in CF. Now let’s be sure he really can patrol the space. Looks great so far. Running back speed, good judgment.

  13. Yogi Barrister's avatar Yogi Barrister said, on June 8, 2024 at 2:12 pm

Judging by their interactions in the field, it seems like Ramos is pissed at Slater for taking Matos’ roster spot.

Despite what most fans think, they had to give Slater a chance. They can change their mind on Matos.

    • willedav's avatar willedav said, on June 8, 2024 at 2:23 pm

Matos had 2 hits and rbi last night for RCs. Opportunity to play every day and show them what he can do.

this new rule gives the runner license to block the throw to first. Attempts to avoid the runner go wide. And the 1Bman has to evade the charge or get decked.

    Using Thairo as an example:

    2022 OPS .722 OPS+ 105, slightly above league average

    2023 OPS .731 OPS+ 102

2024 OPS .695 OPS + 102 still slightly above league average. What’s dropped is OB down to .282 as he’s taking fewer BBs.

Going through Baggs “A Band of Misfits” found first time Kuiper ever mentioned torture. 2010 April 20 vs. Padres at Petco J Sanchez gave up only 1 hit but Giants lost 1-0 to Matt Latos, squandering multiple late inning chances to score.

Leadoff triple in 8th from Nate, runners at corners w 1 out in 9th. Pads scored on single and steal by Chase Headley who eventually came around on sac fly by Scott Hairston.

“… the loss remained in broadcaster Duane Kuiper’s mind. And when he opened the next day’s telecast with a quick recap of the one-hit loss, he stared into the camera and spoke from his gut.

    “Giants baseball,” he said.

    long pause.

    “Torture.”

Good win, good series win. Pitching making it happen, definitely need more than 3 runs going forward.

Sweep would be nice. Ramos is da’ Man right now. Why was Slater getting in Ramos’ way out there taking those fly balls — Ramos was right to take them…

    • Yogi Barrister's avatar Yogi Barrister said, on June 8, 2024 at 4:52 pm

“Why was Slater getting in Ramos’ way out there taking those fly balls — Ramos was right to take them…”

Not really. Slater was closer. If there’s a runner on base, you need the RF to catch those.

      • xoot's avatar xoot said, on June 8, 2024 at 5:13 pm

game day shows that none of Ramos’s catches occurred with a runner on base.

      • Yogi Barrister's avatar Yogi Barrister said, on June 8, 2024 at 5:44 pm

I understand that. Hopefully Ramos does too.

Slater should have called him off on both of those. If they play together again at home, they might want to switch positions. probably have Yaz play RF though.

      • xoot's avatar xoot said, on June 8, 2024 at 6:06 pm

Yeah I hope bad ass Ramos is as knowledgeable as an old man blogger. Slater needs to heed the CF’s call.

      • Yogi Barrister's avatar Yogi Barrister said, on June 8, 2024 at 7:24 pm

You think maybe he should Ramos should heed the call of a veteran who’s played both positions longer, was closer to the ball on the first one, had a better line on the second?

Don’t know if Slater called first, if at all. After the first play, he talked to Ramos. On the second, he was forced to awkwardly cut in front because he was coming in.

The corner OFs DO defer to the CF when he calls for it, but he may have needed to call sooner on these two plays.

      • xoot's avatar xoot said, on June 8, 2024 at 7:32 pm

No. I think they should both defer to an old man blogger blinking at his various screens, determined to be right from thousands of miles away.

      • Yogi Barrister's avatar Yogi Barrister said, on June 8, 2024 at 8:29 pm

That might be hard for them to do on this plane of existence. As he’ll be a starting Giants outfielder for the foreseeable future, it would probably be better if Ramos learns the art of communication from his teammates and coaches.

Good article by Grant Brisbee about why sending down Matos was absolutely the right call. With his speed and ability to take pitches, Slater is better suited for the job at hand until LMWJr returns.

Unc, Melvin took Howard out in 5th for lefty Miller to face LH with 1 on 2 outs. He’d thrown 74 pitches by then 3 hits 3 BBs. Miller finished that inning and then got 2 more outs in 6th, Walker came in etc. Kontos upset about pitcher win? yikes

    • xoot's avatar xoot said, on June 8, 2024 at 5:25 pm

Irrelevant concern. Dumb. Howard’s relevant stats were fine. Got the job done.

      • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on June 8, 2024 at 6:21 pm

irrelevant to you or to Howard?

      • xoot's avatar xoot said, on June 8, 2024 at 6:26 pm

Howard needed a good start. He needed to be more than an opener. He got it. He did his job beautifully. No one gives a shit about W/L now. At arb time, that stat doesn’t even get discussed.

Clark is being left off the Olympic team so that 42 year old Tarausi can go to her 6th (!) Olympics. Clark has done a lot more to grow the popularity of women’s basketball than Tarausi did in 20+ years, but whatever. Clark will appreciate the rest. Rookies in the WNBA have to start the season only a few weeks after their college season ends.

    • xoot's avatar xoot said, on June 8, 2024 at 6:16 pm

Players like Tarausi and Griner had to play in Russian leagues during the off season to make ends meet. We all well know the risks there. Clark has it made. She can rest and meet with her ad agents and brokers while the older generally darker skinned players who kept the league alive while the public mocked it get just a bit more of what they’ve earned.

      But whatever is a tell.

    • djloo27's avatar djloo27 said, on June 8, 2024 at 6:42 pm

      Why can’t they both go?

      • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on June 8, 2024 at 7:53 pm

They’re only taking 12 players, and they’re going to win the gold medal, no suspense there. Having Clark on the team would have brought more media and fan interest. IMO, they could have thanked Tarausi for the memories and taken Clark instead.

And it’s not a race thing. Stewart is white and she’s had a great career, but she barely moves the needle in fan interest. It’s about style of play. Clark is fun to watch. She’s a creative passer and shooter. I think fans really miss great passing. It’s one of the joys of basketball that’s gotten kind of lost.

      • xoot's avatar xoot said, on June 8, 2024 at 7:58 pm

It is a race thing in part. But you know whatever.

      • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on June 8, 2024 at 8:16 pm

Sabrina Ionescu is another white player that made the Olympic team. She’s a terrific player, but she doesn’t move the needle in viewer interest. The 12 that made the team are all great players. They certainly don’t need Clark to win. The team will win the gold, and lots of people won’t be watching, as usual.

      • xoot's avatar xoot said, on June 8, 2024 at 8:22 pm

        Whatevs.

      • willedav's avatar willedav said, on June 8, 2024 at 9:20 pm

Bottom line coaches don’t care one iota about fan interest. They are putting the 12 best players on the team and 5 best on the floor. No way Clark belongs…not to mention that would mean if she were there another very deserving more experienced player that is better defensively and more athletic would not get the chance to be Olympian.

Sorry, imo this is 100% best move.

    • willedav's avatar willedav said, on June 8, 2024 at 9:16 pm

The Americans have such a wealth of talent that if they could send 2 teams of 12 they would likely wind up playing each other for gold. The others seleccted are all vets with overseas and Olympic experience. Taurasi is annoying person but she can still shoot and understands Intl game–she had league game where she made 7 3s very recently. Clark’s time will come.

  53. alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 said, on June 8, 2024 at 6:26 pm

Bottom line it’s the Centerfielders(always has been that way, if they can get to ball it’s they’re job to take charge in running the defense out there on lots of balls to RF are LF.With Ramos u have the superior arm as well over Slater,Conforto,Yaz are anyone else out there. I have no issues for a guy like Ramos really stepping up both offensively&especially defensively it was really lacking.Ramos is the CF in my book.Slater&Yaz,and Conforto can alternate the other 2 positions ..

    • xoot's avatar xoot said, on June 8, 2024 at 6:31 pm

Yes. It’s true in some situations, runner on second eg, the RF may have the better angle and momentum for a throw to prevent a tag advance. The good CF will know.

  54. zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on June 8, 2024 at 8:00 pm

I dislike the Celtics and the Mavs, both. But I guess I’d rather the Celtics win the series. But the Celtics generally put all 5 guys out on the perimeter and it’s just a lot of one on one stuff. It’s not great basketball, and it’s kind of boring. It’s what a lot of NBA teams do these days.
