A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Bochy Swept?

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on June 9, 2024

So of COURSE we are going for a sweep against the defending World Series champs in their yard. That makes perfect sense.

What a moment this must have been for Jayson Werth. I bet he cared more in that moment about winning that race than he did when he won his World Series. If you love horse racing as I do (and Loo does) you just KNOW.

Yeah it was cool they talked him post race. Luis Saez is awesome. Prat and Baffert won Met Mile, right?

Gausman pitched first 9 inning complete game shutout of his career vs. A’s, gave up 5 hits 109 pitches. Said. “…if I get through 7 let me go. I’ll go to 120 if you need me to.”

Wondered if in different era Webb could have done that Friday, but maybe better he didn’t.

no doubt about Werth. Surprising how Rangers have taken their sophomore year with Boch off. State of the Giants this season is that we can beat up in the bad teams stay near .500 and generally look like like a minor league team against the superior MLB teams. Just who we are and I’m ready to turn the page on Farhan after this season.

Didn’t get a chance to log on yesterday. I know the Doctors memorial service must have been a great time to remember for all.

As far as baseball goes I am totally disgusted with the product we are putting on the field. I don’t care that most other teams are below the .500 mark. I only care about the Giants. We do have a couple of bright spots for our future but overall we suck.

@Flav/Loo: you guys like Paul LoDuca? Always thought he was just another annoying Dodger as player but seems very knowledgeable about horse racing. the FS1 or 2 coverage of Saratoga is fun to watch for most part.

Used to see him at Belmont when he was a Met. Never said a word to him. He’s just another horse racing degenerate. He knows his stuff but Flavor is 20x the better handicapper. LoDuca did make the best catch of a foul pop I ever saw by a catcher. He caused a little stir here in his playing days for complaining about Latin ballplayers using the language barrier as a phony excuse to dodge the post game media iirc…

Well, looks like the Boch Sweep may not happen, but you never know, maybe there’s a comeback still possible.

Giants are a poor defensive team, again. Despite the FO’s promises to really improve the D. The team ranks near the MLB bottom in most defensive stat categories. It’s not just the physical errors, it’s things like being terrible at keeping runners checked at first. All the other mental mistakes that really don’t show in the states, the frequent inability, apparently, to anticipate plays required in given situations…

    • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on June 9, 2024 at 11:31 am

That’s the ‘funny’ thing about the sea change Melvin and the new coaching staff was supposed to provide. A return to fundamentals. A baseball guy instead of an analytics guy.

Hard to say this team is worse than last year’s (it isn’t) but it isn’t playing well at all with pretty much the same problems. Shoddy defense, inept baserunning, throwing to the wrong base, no speed, no power, spotting hitting.

Greggie had his fall guy all prepped and ready to be dropped on his sword by the end of last season, and all they have proven is that it really wasn’t Kapler’s fault that the team is mired in mediocrity. He’s no Leo Durocher, but he got more out of a bad lineup than BoMel is getting out of this one.

This of course leads to the front office and their inability to go after big name guys. If they haven’t figured it out by now, they need to overpay. Shit, look at Chick Correa. Sure glad we dodged that bullet. Not. Just the errors he wouldn’t have made would give the Giants 4 games. Plus he can hit.

Baseball Prospectus piece found more LH hits in total 23 season. And the return to old timey balance did tend to soothe cranks rankled by the free runner, the clock, the big bases, and loss of the art of the interminable pickoff battle. (But for the runner, of course, good changes all.)

I bet the ban on the rover has helped LaMonte a bit.

      • James's avatar James said, on June 9, 2024 at 12:33 pm

Undoubtedly, it’s had some impact. I read the BP piece. Like Chuck’s portentous 67%, 750 extra hits is a big number, but translates to one extra hit, a single, for every 3 games across all of baseball. On top of that, 250 of those were to right handed batters, who weren’t as affected by the shift to begin with, especially given the finding that line drives were the biggest net for lefties (RHers obviously were not subject to the rover.) I just looked at BABIP for this year, which is back down to .287 after returning to “historical norms” in 23.

But, yes, it made fans happy.

      • xoot's avatar xoot said, on June 9, 2024 at 12:41 pm

Before he went down Lamonte’s BABIP was .436. Another isolated big number, of course, but LEGIT BIG. If I check his spray charts I’m sure I’ll see a ton of his hits landing right where the rover would’ve been. Well, not real sure. But that would be aesthetically pleasing, too.

      • James's avatar James said, on June 9, 2024 at 12:54 pm

I did look. Lamonte is less of a pull hitter than I thought. Really too bad he’s not at the top of the line up with Ramos right now.

      • xoot's avatar xoot said, on June 9, 2024 at 8:25 pm

It’s mindless. Her “argument” is nothing but hyperbolic supposition. If Clark goes to Paris this great change will occur, and this great change will occur, and this–ad nauseam. It’s the flip side of her vicious hyperbolic attacks on Bonds and just as irresponsible. She’s a hack.

I’m not really interested in the Olympic decision. I don’t think Clark’s supporters are necessarily wrong. But Caitlinmania is stupid mob frenzy and opportunists like Brennan feasting off it are frauds.

      • willedav's avatar willedav said, on June 9, 2024 at 9:01 pm

There is also a column in USA rag that supports decision to leave her off team, says she shouldn’t be a “show pony” and needs the rest. Xoot is right the cult of Clarkmania that thought she would just walk into the WNBA directly from college and do well is naive and misinformed at best and mostly ignorant of the wealth of talented players already in the league competing. Geno Auriemma called them “delusional.”

Even if most of rest of country hasn’t watched, the league has a 20 year history of championship dynamic players and there are at least 2 Olympic teams worth of them playing right now, vets that have played and won at Olympic level. Women’s team hasn’t lost a game in Olympics since 1992 and the pool of talent is quite excellent. I watch Clark play often but on merit alone she does not deserve to be there and I think it’s a slap in face to those that do to think otherwise. If people don’t want to watch cuz she isn’t there, their loss.

It’s the Nats, Mets (barely), Reds, Cubs, Cards, Pirates, Pads, and D-Bags that are our competition for those last 2 spots.

Given the amount of teams and the schedule, it doesn’t look like any of these teams will be running away. So the front office will get another opportunity to do . . . .
