Soler
Heard Baggs on KNBR this morning with a stat we already intuitively knew: Soler’s OPS with the bases empty is over .800. With runners in scoring position it’s just over .500. For a guy who has been such a run producer in his career this makes no sense and I’d like to think he’s going to snap out of it at some point. He better, we need him with so many other guys hurt.
Soler takes too many pitches. Then swings at crap. That’s my analysis…
Aaron Rowand 2.0. Next we’ll hear about the 500 swings he takes before games.
When I was a sports-crazed early teen in the early ’70s, I somehow got to attend a one-day charity golf tournament in Fresno. Jerry West was one of the players– why he came up to Fresno I don’t remember. I think he was still a player, so this was in the off season. I followed him around for probably half or more of his round. I remember a couple of things clearly. He wore perfectly pleated salmon-colored pants with some sort of light cream sweater, and golf shoes that had a blinding shine. And, he knocked the crap out of his drives (had to be pushing 300 yards then) with a beautiful, big persimmon head driver that looked like some European wood carver had built it and polished it for a week. He just seem to float around the course, and like Warren Zevon said in Wherevolves of London, his hair and he looked “perfect”. Like a damn god. He even said Hello to me once walking off the tee as I timidly said “Hi Jerry”. I was in awe.
RIP to a great player, sports executive and human…
epic post.
Very cool. Another epic loss to basketball world.
Sounds like the human version of Affirmed. He wouldn’t let you take his picture in the winner’s circle until he wiped off his mouth on his groom’s shirt…
Years later, in college, back when I could play decently, I bought a new set of woods— Persimmon woods. Power-Bilts. 1,3,4. I was thinking of Jerry when I bought ‘em, for sure. I played with those for decades, well into the metal woods era. They weren’t the biggest heads, you really had to hit them on the sweet spot. Same as with my Wilson 1200 blades. But, when you did, with that nice “thwok” sound off the Persimmon sweet spot, the ball would fly…
Wisely HR about only offense last night as Giants held to 3 hits. His OB is respectable .322 (in this season) and that was second HR. Looking up full stats he’s had 2 BBs in little over 50 ABs…which is 2 more than Schmitt has in 40 some ABs. Lowest OB among starters last night is Estrada at .269…lower than Yaz Soler and Flores, ouch.
fwiw end of last thread post, RCs box from last night had Luciano at 2b, Ahmed at SS Fitz 3b Matos LF.
Pen last night 4.1 innings of 2 hit shutout relief with 5 Ks. Taylor Rogers Hjelle and Jackson (!).
Taylor hasn’t given up earned run in last 10 outings/11 innings 7 hits 4 BBs 11 Ks.
MLB may be regretting their getting in bed with the bent-nose crowd. Pissed off gamblers are threatening players these days. Some local guys made the article.

Yeah things have certainly changed in baseball with the gambling & threats towards players. The days when they were just razzed by fans calling them a bum, you suck which was normal protocol especially on the road for all teams is now replaced by death threats and having players change their Venmo accounts due to some of these crackpots expecting a payout after a player stiffed them out of a parlay??
Melvin goes with Wisely LH at SS vs. LHP like Valdez, over Schmitt.
He’s a pretty good UT IF right now. He’ll probably switch places in Sac with Ahmed soon. Limit of five times per season for option year moves, right?
Think so. Maybe Ahmed is D backup or plays SS with Wisely at 2b when Estrada rests. Hopefully Wisely continues to hit and forces Giants hand to keep him up.
Let’s hope not.
And rips a single first time up. Followed by Thairo DP.
If we don’t lead the league in DPs someone else sucks pretty hard.
Just looked it up–3rd most NL. Padres have more but they have played 3 more games.
Estrada btw leads team with 7 of them.
Hey now. That’s how you stay out of the DP.
Yeah nice inning.
Come on, Webbie,
What a rocket from Alvarez. that’s a guy I’d pay to watch hit.
Ramos heads up play to pick up ball off carom and hold him to double.
Why does Flores do that? Not buying Kruk noise it’s Webb’s fault. Flores goes back to bag Estrada makes the play.
You aren’t buying it?
Balls hit to the right side, the pitcher covers 1st. That’s kinda been the rule forever.
that ball was hit almost up the middle. wtf was Flores doing way over there?
Irrelevant and immaterial. It was not Flores ball to make play on in first place. Estrada could have fielded it and thrown to him for the out.
That’s the second time this season that’s happened between Webb and Flores, both times with a runner on third with two outs.
Cost ’em runs both times iirc.
Sigh. Maybe Thairo should have been bunting.
Fucker might be useful after all.
A bunt AND a stolen base? In the same game? Sac fly to boot.
Kruk seems to have forgotten that Harrison and Winn have beaned two hitters recently.
Alright, nice 3-spot after the gift run.
Slater and Wisely 5 for 5 that will work! Both have scored a run and Slater adds 2RBI’s..
800 + feet on last 2 balls hit by Alvarez.
Now he’s a great Cuban DH. Though he’s in LF today.
That first run they pissed away to Houston better not be the difference. Very impressive bomb by Alvarez.
that big Oxy tm Houston wears on its sleeves is a helluva choice. Occidental Oil or whatever it is should’ve done better. The Sackler family may dig it.
West had kind of a quirky nose because it had been broken so many times. In the era he played in, you drove into the key at risk of life and limb.
Electronic ball and strike calls, please.
This morning, on the DVR, I watched the WNBA’s Minnesota vs. Las Vegas. The Vegas team makes for a good Evil Empire team to root against. It was fun to watch the upstart Minny team defeat the Evil Empire. Vegas’ players tried to bully Minny, but Minny stood up to the bullies.
The Lynx! I heard a white trapper in Alaska rue the fact that he’d only nabbed one link that winter.
Yeah, it’s a solid team nickname. Las Vegas Aces is good, too. The Valkyries will grow on me, I’m sure.
I thought this was interesting. Useful history. May be paywalled. If so, sorry.

Like a yeast infection.
They stole the Reno Aces name.
I’m waiting for Chico’s Bail Bonds.
Here comes trouble.
Ballgame! Doobie Dubon goes down.
Quick and painless 9th.
Wow- he made quick work of those guys.
See ya Dubie, you jerk. Series win!
.500 appears to be a magnet they can’t get away from going up OR down.
I was atleast expecting the Stros to get the tying run to the plate and Doval shut em down easily! Alright take the series, dayoff tomorrow, then the crap ass Angels come in to hopefully get above .500 again..
Nice to get Webb a win as well.
Game clocked in at 2 hours, 7 minutes!
Nap clocked in at 1 hour, 39 minutes…
I appreciate a good nap as much as anyone.
Whispers are growing louder regarding the New York Mets possibly making All-Star first baseman Pete Alonso available to other clubs before the July 30 trade deadline.
“Alonso is expected to be the biggest power bat traded at the deadline,” The Athletic’s Jim Bowden shared in a piece published Tuesday. Bowden named the Chicago Cubs, Seattle Mariners, Houston Astros, San Francisco Giants, Minnesota Twins and New York Yankees as potential suitors for Alonso.
Yeah, sure…
Funny, reading through Bowden column in TA about team needs for everyone he must have said “OF help” half a dozen times. With Ramos locking down CF (hopefully) that does make others in corners expendable, no?
Giants comments on Brisbee column about trade deadline moves included someone proposing they trade Doval. hmmnn
They love Wilbur don’t they?
Walker-Tyler-Doval trust the process.
tour of AL West going OK so far w Angels in next.
meanwhile Padres have won 2 straight over sinking A’s at Petco but trail 3-2 in 6th today.
Because Clark’s mother is Canadian, she could actually play for the Canadian team. But there’s no way she would do that. It would not be good for her brand, and lots of athletes these days are VERY focused on their brand. She’s “All American Midwest Caitlin, blah blah, etc.”
Dang, A’s blow 4-2 lead in 8th and Padres walk it off w second HR of day from rookie Jackson Merrill off ace closer Miller in 9th for 5-4 W. 2 HRs also for Donnie Barrels. 3 game sweep for SD.
Flav strikes again: “…I’d like to think he’s going to snap out of it at some point.” Soler on base 4 times today w 2 hits/2 BBs.
Flav’s not from this planet…
Matos today in Reno: 3-6 scores 3 drives in 5 2 doubles and HR. Sabol homered as well in 17-3 W.
