Does Doval Suck?
Nice win. Doval is just a mess. I’m not buying that “it wasn’t a closer situation” excuse. He’s been pretty shitty all year. Seriously, what self respecting closer walks around toting a 1.73 WHIP for the season? Only closer even sniffing that is Neris at 1.64 and he’s terrible.
Luckily we don’t need to worry too much about having a terrible closer. Got to be winning late to bring him in and we rarely are.
at least they have that nice fancy light show for him for those night home saves!!!
Did people see that story I think from SI this weekend that SF is the least desirable place for major leaguers to want to play. That is shocking to me considering the magnificent park and the overall quality of life in the Bay Area overall. And especially in comparison to living in places like St. Louis, Houston, Cindy, etc. or that atrocious stadium in Tampa.
Maybe Posey was revealing an ugly truth and ripping the band aid off for the reason we struggle landing top tier free agents. Posey was given a ton of grief for the comments but it maybe a reality of the perceptions of the team, city, region, and high tax state that in combination discourages top tier free agents. Of course the Warriors play three blocks away and I don’t think that would discourage the upper tier of nba free agents to sign if there was the salary cap there to attract the big time.
Have you traveled thru SF lately?
I was just there in January with one daughter and we were on Haight drive through the Park Marina and then parked by Ghirardelli and walked up to dinner in North Beach and it was a Sunday afternoon and restaurants were packed. One homeless bum sleeping on the walk up.
but we did not go downtown that day and forgot to show her Chinatown. We did get a very nice weather day for a January Sunday.
Players can afford to live where they want. Plenty of nice suburban areas on either side of Bay. CA taxes don’t seem to bother Dodgers or Padres FAs, or those playing for other professional sports teams here. As Posey said maybe perception by FAs plays a part but other factors (Park competitive ability of team) have more to do with it.
I think park factors certainly a factor but it appears it is the overall everything that is discouraging high end free agent from wanting to sign. The Giants certainly been in financially in every major free agent it seems the last five years and landed none. Something is going on and I don’t think it is the park itself as the dominant issue.
But past glory is probably the path of how we recreate championship baseball. Develop great young arms and bring in a couple vets like what we have now with Hicks, hopefully a soon to return Cobb with timely free agent vet hitters and timely trades to fit lineup pieces rather than relying on $300 million plus counteracts. Probably a pipe dream to pursue Soto.
“overall everything” didn’t bother Carlos Correa. It was the physical stuff that bothered Giants, and the Mets.
I don’t consider Correa a top tier free agent because he was trying my to sign whomever was giving the biggest dollar knowing he had this questionable lingering injury history.
with that said, there has been chatter about pursuing Biggio or Guerrero from the Blue Jays with Vlad being a free agent with Boras rep’ing. I would not add any major prospect if Blad is not signed long-term as part of the deal and I have always been reticent about trading Luciano and would still be reticent.
Frankly, been pleasantly surprised to see Ramos produce. Is making him the centerpiece a non-starter for both Biggio and Guerrero? Hell no to trading Ramos in my mind unless we do have a long term deal with Vlad. Do we add in Lamont Wade while he may have his peak trade value and 2-3 other mid-tier or one other upper tier prospect? I’m not trading Whisenhunt or Crawford or our #1 from last draft.

Hey, at least he’s showing some emotion.
SF is fine. Stay away from the Loin. Parts of the Mission can get sketch at night. The areas around the ballparks are certainly better than they were 40 years ago. And, when my wife worked with the travelling secretary, plenty of players lived in the city.
The Giants have signed ONE big name superstar in the free agent era. Barry Bonds. And we all know why.
Weather and ball park are the biggest factors.
How many superstar signings have there been? Seems like the small handful of recent players in that category chose where they wanted to go. Judge wasn’t forced back to the Yankeees because he rejected the Giants.
In the history of free agency? More than the ONE we have.
Hopefully this fires up Doval enough to take it out on batters, not ice chests.
Maybe SF has trouble landing FAs because the pitch from Larry and Farhan is more slime ball than money ball.
They don’t have trouble landing free agents.
Thank you so much, James. You are right, we just couldn’t sign the plan A guys but yes, we nailed getting those plan B waiver wire guys.
I’m sure if there was someone, anyone else negotiating for the Giants, Judge or Ohtani would have been ours. The obvious, most plausible reason a couple of free agents didn’t come here must be ignored because the pretentious little non-baseball man troll in the front office deserves an ass-kicking and whatever blame can be heaped on him. There have of course been many other free agent signings besides those annoying waiver wire pick ups, which the troll delights in solely to show off his smarts.
You can find Carlos Correa story on mlb.com by Maria Guardado–he agreed with Giants for $350 million over 13 years, Dec. 13 2022. Turner Swanson and Bogaerts were the big FA SS on market. Boras backed out of the deal once Giants had questions about medicals and he pivoted to Mets who did same before Correa re upped with Twins.
the right wing tech moguls who now own San Francisco and buy its elections, including the recalls, push doom loop publicity for their megalomaniacal purposes and profits. They’ve seriously damaged the city, but not in ways that would offend a very rich ballplayer working there part time when the weather’s good.
It’ll be 89 and humid at game time in Chicago tonight.
This is a reasonable overview of what I’m talkin bout. Why the reporters didn’t mention musk I don’t know. He ruined his part of town and then blamed the result on others.

Good stuff xoot! Agree for the most part with everything in this article. My mom, dad, and most of my relatives grew up in San Francisco. The only one remaining is my Aunt Mary, whom owns a Victorian on the “Avenues.” Pawlie spent a few nights there during two of the Giants World Series runs. Anyway, my aunt did own 3 Victorians in the city, but because she was cash poor (husband, an engineer passed away in the early 2000s), she had to sell the other 2 about a decade ago. She is disgusted with what’s happened with the city, insofar as the “gentrification” of her district, along with others in the city. Many of her long time friends were forced to move out.
Exactly. Heart of the city from working thru middle class pummeled and driven out. So what’s left? Many rich people in secure spaces and far fewer but all too obvious poor people suffering outside. Gawd knows what the billionaires’ final solution for those folks will be.
I would imagine that John has similar stories to tell about the gentrification of SF.
If their aim is to gentrify, then what is the strategy? Talk SF down to submarine real estate prices? Cool. Push the doom loop? Funnily enough the mainstream media can’t get enough of it. Detroit, Cleveland, and Houston are veritable paradises compared to SF. And I have a condo on Angel Island I can sell you.
Sure, gentrification is a bad thing, and cool old neighborhoods like the mission and dogpatch and plenty of others have gone upscale, and the tech-bro nightmare drove my daughters out, but this article completely ignores the reality of what killed SF.
COVID and the remote-working drive tht came with it has laid to waste the commercial real estate market all over the city. Gentrification has forced people out of their places, but SF lost what, 60,000 jobs during the pandemic?
All the businesses supported by the people working in the city closed up shop. So, whatever these politicians and shady deal-makers are doing, it pales in comparison to what has driven people to the streets.
And calling the Weather Underground the ‘New Left’ really had me laughing.
Tech takeover started before Covid but the pandemic gave them a political opportunity, first with the school board recall and then now entrenched with the doom loop driven police crackdown movement that started with the Boudin recall. They’re playing a long game. Too subtle? Absurd myopia. And I seriously doubt you remember how the new left SDS splintered, creating the weather underground on one side.
Also the new left earned that name becz it rose in succession to the old left that included old style communists and communist inspired revolutionaries who focused on organizing labor. The new left depended on student support, fueled by the war in Viet Nam, but many original leaders were convinced that violence was necessary. The Black Panthers were new left, as were the famous groups in your childhood backyard: The Peninsula Red Guard/Revolutionary Union and Venceremos.
All the machinations around the SF political landscape has netted nothing on any side but stangation and finger pointing. And yeah, the tech-bro nightmare happened with the Google buses back in 2015-16. But the financial district was thriving, and the city wasn’t boarding up 50 businesses a day.
As far as the police crackdown goes, huh? The SF police force is CONSTANTLY under fire for watching crimes and giving thieves directions out of town. The progressives are being rightfully shot down due to stupid laws that encourage petty theft and have led to organized raids on businesses all over the Bay Area and California. As well as all the inane idiocy around renaming schools because Abe Lincoln or George Washington wasn’t woke enough.
I’m about as progressive as anyone can get, but I ascribe to common sense more than the kumbaya agenda that gives people a license to steal and gives creedence to hurt feelings because 44 SF schools HAD to be renamed because of whatever bullshit Lowell, or Lincoln, or whomever was deemed unworthy.
The right is throwing money at things that likely won’t do a hell of a lot either. There’s just no room for moderates anymore. Shit, I may join Paul in Viet Nam if things get any weirder.
you’re an ignoramus and there’s nothing “progressive” about you far as I can see. Apolitical Zappa was not “revolutionary ”
Better ignorant than a bloviating red-hat.
I thought you guys were good at figuring people out.
You are clueless.
Frank Zappa apolitical? You are hysterical.
He pegged the Christian right trying to take over the government, the courts, and direct the narrative way back in 1985. No, he wan’t a revolutionary like Che, but he flustered the shit out your boy Pat Robertson.
you’re stupid too. Zappas opposition to censorship was elitist contempt. Luckily, I avoid elitism. My contempt is down home.
I’m hoping Chuck comes back with: “I know you are but what am I?”
It’s undefeated since second grade…
Now that’s an apolitical classic. Yours, not chuckles. Works though.
Willie Mays won’t be in Birmingham this week. I’m sad to learn that. Maybe he’ll appear via video.
saw a note that Wade may make it. Hicks of course will be there. Hard to fathom what the celebration means to them. But I just recently read Percival Everett’s novel James so my imagination’s fired up.
No Surprise the Giants City Connect Jerseys one of the Worst in Baseball..Atleast take comfort that the Doghairs jersey is rated last..
A couple of writers input..(1) Devastatingly poor quality that looks awkward and cheap. The Bridges look bad, the fonts of the “SF” and “G” logos clash. It looks like a big L..
(2) “Players look like a container of orange sherbet on the field “
The Bridge had real potential if these were designed knowing the A’swould be leaving Oakland after the season,Welp,It’s a swing and miss..
Reading David Halberstam “Summer of ’49”, both Yanks and Red Sox had scouts recommending them to sign Mays when he was playing with Black Barons. Sox minor league team was white Barons, and 2 scouts saw Mays and said he was best player they’d ever seen and he’d be relatively cheap to acquire. They told Joe Cronin, who held off and sent southern white guy there instead, who “reported that Mays was not the Red Sox type.”
Yanks had also sent southerner to Birmingham to scout Mays, and “he reported back that Mays could not hit the curveball.”
Fun RISP facts . . . 2023’s 14th in NL runs scored, last ranked in OPS Giants team hit 249 with RISP, a full 14 points above their 235 overall number. Even though they sucked, they were clutch, man. This year’s team is 6th in runs scored, 8th in OPS, yet their RISP number is 7 points below their overall average. Hitting with RISP . . . . still the most overhyped, irrelevant stat in baseball.
and here I thought the most overhyped stat was the hard-hit rate.
I don’t think Rich and Laura Britt are talking about that one a whole lot.
Since I don’t have a clue who the Britts are, I’ll take your word for it and bow in your opposite direction.
Post game babblers. Rich’s last name is Aurelia.
Yeah, remember that playoff run last year?
Neither do I.
We suck at hitting in general.
We were 22nd in LOB last year.
This year? 24th. Yay. Call it meaningless, call it what you want.
What we show is we don’t score for 3-4 games and then have one big outburst.
Averaging things out doesn’t play into the reality of this team.
Sure, you can blame Winn’s loss on the HRs given up, but the Giants had 3 innings where they should have score some runs. They scored 1. 2 & 3rd, no outs, bases loaded 1 out, 2nd and 3rd no outs next inning, on and on.
The old ‘lose 3 games 1-0 and then win one 9-0’ deal.
Hitting averages would look OK. When in reality they aren’t.
Context! giants offense is better than Cubs. It’s pitching that’s not. Cubs have scored 17 fewer runs than Giants, 10th NL. Giants are 8th OPS Cubs 12th. Despite playing in “friendly confines” Cody Bellinger has 9 HRs and .759 OPS, decidedly off last year #s: 26 HRs .881 OPS . .525 slugging that has dropped to .440.
He’s making $30 million this year and he has options for each of next 2 years for around $55 million more if he wants to stay there.
Who fucking cares?
A better answer from you Chuck would have been “Who fucking cares?”
Fuck the stats. Just pick and hug the ones you like.
Bellinger attracted lot of attention from Giants fans, either to play CF or 1b. Had helluva year last year, just seems like one off.
Matos (RF) homered and doubled yesterday. Luciano (SS) 0-4 w 2 Ks. RCs lost 10-6 at Reno and each one of 4 pitchers they used were scored upon. McCray (CF) 2-4 stole a bag, Sabol (1b) 0-3 with an error, hitting .185 w .615 OPS.
Well, for the first time in its 27 years of existence, the WNBA has an actual genuine rivalry. Indy and Chicago have a rematch this Sunday on ESPN in the afternoon, and ESPN probably wishes it was a prime time game.
Clark and Reese aren’t Magic and Bird, but they’re a little bit like that,
bringing their rivalry from college and jump-starting a floundering pro league.
Someone called it the first “water cooler moment at work” for the WNBA, where people are actually talking about the WNBA.
As we all know, rivalries add a lot to sports. It makes things more intense and passionate, and fun.
And at the moment, the two teams are tied for the 8th and final playoff spot, so there’s that element, too.
The Chicago Sky arena seats 10,000. It wouldn’t be a surprise if the game got moved to the Bulls arena, which seats about 20,000.
It’s all about race. Who are we kidding?
It shouldn’t be. It was easy to hate Bird and the Celtics.
Zum, you think if John Lennon was alive today, he would concede that “Imagine” didn’t quite work out?
Of course, in sports no one feels sorry for anyone. Opponent fans aren’t feeling sorry for the Dodgers having so many injuries. The Evil Empire is getting no sympathy.
The UFL had its championship game yesterday. Who knew? Two anonymous teams played in the anonymous game.
What sucks is baseball umps.
Electronic ball and strike calls, please.
The usual quote from Flem “Again the Giants do not score “
Another wasted inning 1-3 one out Ramos K’s Bailey to the warning track..
that’s on Hicks.
That run doesn’t really count, since there was no RISP.
different innjng
Dansby Swanson in second year of 7 year deal @$177 million through 2029. 6 HRs .640 OPS.
“With Anthony Rizzo’s injury, the Yankees may be more inclined to upgrade through trade. The Athletic’s Chris Kirschner named LaMonte Wade Jr. as an “Under-the-radar” trade target in a June 17 story.”
no way Farhan sells. The MLB is reaching NFL parity levels.
Hey, Yaz triple!
And Brooks had a stolen base earlier.
who are these guys?
Tauchman with the 90’ running injury.
surprised Soler didn’t explode.
sheesh. Robo umps already. Unreal how many missed calls in 4 innings
Yazzz!!!
Hell of a throw by Yaz.
Oh, this’ll be overturned.
Huh. Color me surprised.
Yaz guns him down
Confirmed — Yaz guns him out!
Yazz!!! Beautiful throw to nail the runner at home!!
And the replay confirms your outta there cubby!
That might be the worat AB of the season.
Yep. Don’t get much worse than that. Wisely simply watched 5 pitches go by earlier.
Nice patience by Thairo. Brooks idk what he was thinking.
Yeah! Who needs hits with runners on base? We have the lead!!!
Goddamn pitchers just have to be perfect.
Goddamit Brooks that was as bad an AB possible!
Why is this stiff on the team??
And of course on cue they leave the bases loaded for 3 more LOB..
Foster Brooks would give you a better AB than that…
Or Renel.
And their goes the lead as the Giants squeal l like Ned Beatty in Deliverance…
Nice call on Foster Brooks Loo lol 😂
There you have it. 2 runs is 2 many. Pay no attention to the 9 LOB in 6 innings. Or the 1-9 with RISP. The one hit? A bunt single.
Goddamn pitchers can’t shut everyone out.
Uh Ramos says no.
Famous Ramos! Someone needs to wake this team up.
Ramos answers.
Have they really developed an outfielder?
Well Sabean did not Farhan. But I’ll take anyone after Chili’s 40 years hiatus..
Tie it up Ramos!
And then theirs the Machine Heliot Ramos says I will carry this team! Nice Oppo Bomb 💣
Wow. So glad RISP doesn’t mean anything.
Hah! the ol HBP.
That might be the 2nd-worst.
Nice play, Brooks.
HBP, we’ll take it.
Oh my effin’ god.
Fuck. You’ve got to be kidding. Brooks should be sent to fucking Richmond.
Or Trenton.
No harness racing fans here to remember Trenton Time handing the invincible Niatross his first loss in 1980 in one of the most shocking stretch incidents anyone ever saw…
Get him the fuck outta here…
Creeping up in the box did little for Brooks on his K..
And now he butchers a pop up on the infield.Remind me while he’s still here?
Guess he was waiting for the centerfielder Ramos to make the catch..
Are you fucking kidding me????? Call for a high fastball and miss it.
Yay!!!!!!!! Clown ball lives!
Such a good team.
The front office must be so proud of the job Farhan has done.
Happ > the hapless.
A Miller Hi Life Beer 🍺 to wrap up the game!
If I’m Bailey I’m dogging all the fucking umps.
I think Miller on the radio is slipping. Very hesitant on these last 2 Giant homers…
Miller is pretty bad on the radio. The play is over for 10 seconds and I still don’t know WTF happened.
This ump is fucking with us big time. Melvin has to get tossed just for appearances. .
Huh. I guess he got tossed between innings.
Someone had to pick up Angel Hernandez’s slack.
Brooks isn’t even AAAA material.
He is the best they can do to bring up from Sac?…
Estrada!
Oh yeah Thairo!
Yes-trada!!!
Gee, that RISP didn’t mean shit.
The late, great Earl Weaver digs that 3 run Estrada jack …
WooEEE Thairo !…
Thairo what a bomb!
Unreal. Brooks takes another clock strike.
At least he’s consistent…
Brooks walk-up song…
Chicago – Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is? (Official Audio) – YouTube
Wow. Ever since Melvin got tossed the zone is tight.
WOW I don’t believe it but it’s true Thario ESTRADA for the lead !!! Crazy freakin ballgame!!
Thairo Fired Up!
Alright Doval, put these fuckers down.
OK, Doval comin’ in.
He certainly doesn’t have here the lack-of-focus excuse of coming into a non-save blowout. Kruk this morning on KNBR said yesterday Doval was “pouting” on the mound and got torched because of it. As good as any explanation, I suppose…
He did beat up a water cooler in the dugout.
Oh boy. We’ll see how Doval shakes off yesterday.
Brooks acting like he can’t find it.
Holy shit. Crazy ass game. Doval’s redemption.
Game. Wow, thats a win I didn’t think we’d get.
