Winning an opener/Bivens game…that feels like 2 or 3 wins, right? I’m up in Medford for the weekend, just giving you guys a new thread.

Earlier game time today.
Wondering if MadBum ever pitches in the majors again. Possibly the greatest WS pitcher of all time has no chance at HOF…
Giants pen held on, but Guards pen was very impressive.
See the Guardians just added Spencer Howard from the Giants for the usual cash considerations. He will be an added spot starter/BP guy.Manager Steven Vogt made a good point about how so many teams are looking for pitching help and Howard is stretched out for 75-80 pitches.Saying Starting Pitching is taxed out early this season getting innings through out the league.
Maybe Giants do have advantage some if guys like Ray,Snell, Cobb( iffy imo) can add more in second half. It’s not like they don’t have enough starters to mix/ match with but I’m keeping Birdsong in this rotation, he’s a young bulldog that can give u 5-6 innings every start if his control holds up.Their letting him go high 90’s in pitch counts which really helps pen use..
Howard had couple decent outings but gave up lot of hits and walks. 24 innings/33 hits/11 BBs. League hit .327 off him with .500 slugging and OPS of .884.
George Kontos affect–more you run him out there, something bound to go wrong. He’s lot better at what he’s doing now, imo.
4 of his 7 outings were pretty good. A lot of damage when things weren’t going right. Not hard to see why someone gave him a shot, even if the odds are that he won’t stick around too much longer.
Good point. Maybe it’s just sequencing, where he gets into difficulty allowing baserunners he can’t work himself out of. Keith Law talks about this: an inning where pitcher allows flyout 2 walks homer and ground out can work different ways. Might only be 1 run allowed (with help of GIDP) or 3.
Bum is still getting 14mil from D-backs this season. But he has said later in the summer if teams desperate for a starter or maybe BP he would be interested especially with a contender..
Yeah not a HOF but Damm nobody can top that W/S pitching run that he did in 2014!
2 SPs for Guards Allen and Carrasco both come in with ERAs over 5.00.
Melvin used 7 pitchers yesterday. Day before only webb tyler rogers and Doval got it done. so Hjelle has had 2 days off, and Taylor Rogers and Miller had 2 days off before yesterday as did Walker who was sure big yesterday. Bullpen report Melvin gets every day who’s in/out sure important these days.
Giants option back Spencer Bevins&David Villar to Sac activate Harrison for this start and Kolton Ingram LHP reliever from Richmond Squirrels who boasts an 8.44 ERA in 5 innings this year and a WHIP of 2.44 yikes 😱 Guess they thought Luke Jackson needed competition for worse pitcher on staff.. 3 LH relievers for now,Miller,Taylor&Ingram hmmm
Good minor league numbers, and was doing well in PCL. Lots of Ks, too many walks. Maybe he’ll punch out the Waddler once this weekend before being released.
Who’s the “Waddler” and why (although I think I know why)?
Last night, Zumie described the greater Naylor’s HR trot as a waddle.
Umm, I guessed the “why,” but not the player.
Yeah I think James means Josh Naylor he’s a mini Panda packing 250 lbs plays 1B but has power 21 bombs I believe Blade his brother Bo Naylor is much skinnier and catches lol 😂
Haven’t watched this series at all. Consequently, no clue about the Waddler, but I like Zum’s nick.
Sent Bivens down? Dumb! 7 games. 1 start 5 IP
17 total IP. 16 k’s 1.12 whip
three batters in, there’s zero chance Harrison goes five or that Sisyphus rolls the rock to 500.
“. . . Sisyphus rolls the rock to 500.”
HAHAHA . . . Good one Yogi.
I’d take Bivens right now over Harrison…
Take him out before disaster happens, which was just missed there…
Very disappointing. No way Harrison was ready for an MLB start. Should have rehabbed another game in the minors…
I think the chickens have come home to roost as you predicted (about our relief corps and starters being exhausted) and AK alluded to in his 11:24 am post.
Don’t help this guy swinging at slop and get good pitch to hit.
BoMel, just take him out. He’s getting hammered — now it’s just an exercise in building up arms strength…
Too many easy take non competitive pitches from Harrison. followed by ones in middle of zone that get whacked. It’s what he always does, rehab starts or not. I’d leave him in there, save pen and let him to figure it out himself if he wants to pitch ML baseball.
Agree.
Looks like BoMel will let Harrison go through to whatever top end pitch count they have selected, whatever the result. Protecting the pen at all costs, even if the game may get out of hand…
Giants should hammer the Guards starter. The guy has a winning record, but most of his stats show he has been a punching bag essentially for everyone this season…
Frustrating. Soler has been on 2b twice with no one out and never moved. Unreal this guy K’d the side, getting Ramos for second time with offspeed in dirt.
Crazy making. A couple of pitches that should have been whacked, a very untimely missed call by the ump, and some well placed slop from a chump.
I heard a stat the other day on KNBR – Giants have the worst 1st inning run differential in MLB. That is, the gap between total season first inning scoring of the Giants vs. total season first inning scoring by the opposition…
Gyros need a couple of jacks to get back into this one…
Went down to Jack London Square. Nice and cool compared to the 102 in the Creek.
Sounds like Dirty Harry got busted.
Bivens and Birdie have better stuff, I think that’s pretty clear…
Here we go . . .
LOL, Allen already has about 4 or 5 wins he probably didn’t deserve
So much for protecting the plate.
Good move bringing in Conforto for Matos, as he was swinging the bat way better versus Matos (whom was like 2 for his last 19) . . . but too bad he SO.
There we go
There you go! Bottom of the order. Hey now!!! Stealing home!
Running and scoring.
Morons keep playing like this, they’ll give us the lead and game.
Agree with Flem, it’s nice to see the Giants steal a run for a change.
Jackson strikes again.
Fuck. Cigarettes and alcohol have warning labels because they’re harmful to your health, yet “action Jackson” is allowed to walk around freely.
That’s action-in-the-bullpen Jackson.
Fence Post using Jackson is like me using my hybrid club. I keep tryying but it never fucking works.
What the actual fuck is wrong with Melvin? Jackson has not had a good outing all season.
Jackson is in the first 1/4 of a 2 year deal ending next season with a guaranteed $11.5 million. That’s why they’ve given him extended rope — DFA’ing him would be an embarrassing hit worth about $8+ million down the dumper. Terrible signing…
His last deal was a $3.6MM one-year stint with the Braves. IDK why Farhan felt he needed to essentially nearly double his annual Atlanta salary in a 2-year deal…
The Giants have a team option on Jackson in 2025. $7,000,000 or a $2,000,000 buyout.
He was good last year coming off an injury
Thanks Yogi for the correction.
I relied on a source other than Cot’s, and it was wrong. He got $3MM last year and is due $6.5 this year — so if they cut him they’ll be out around $3MM down the dumper — IDK what happens to the 2025 buyout if they cut him, whether he gets picked up or not by someone else…
Conforto clutch
Bang Conforto off the LHP!
I don’t know what to make of Conforto…
His OPS is 750 right now, his career mark is 805. I know, you want him to be just a little bit better so you can put him in the player I feel good about seeing at the plate bucket.
If this lead stands, pin that on Meltard.
There it is.
Conforto splits 2024 wild. In 30 more ABs on road he has twice as many extra base hits, and .500 slugging pct/.800 OPS. Home OPS is .636. 7 of 9 HRs on road.
hoooooooooooo. Nice.
Chapman thought he was gonna get rung up.
Too funny.
Can’t win em all.
Pin that on Fence Post.
I prayed for a bomb . . . not a fielder’s choice. Pfffttt!
Melvin’s desire to just let Harrison rack up pitch count cost a 2nd inning bomb, and bring in the inexplicably-still-here-despite-being-crap-all-season Luke Jackson and his bomb given up — did in the Gyros. That and their inability to torch everybody-else-rips-him Allen …
Gianta losing on the verge of .500 might be the surest bet in sports.
Possibly the worst hitting team ever and none other than Ted Williams was their manager…

Yeah, that’s pretty bad when your OBP leader is Frank Howard . . . at 35 years of age.
Still hope.
Per ESPN Power Rankings . . . “Think about all that has gone wrong for San Francisco since the start of the season — the tidal wave of IL stints suffered by its starting pitchers, the loss of Jung Hoo Lee to a catastrophic shoulder injury, the poor offensive performances in its offense. And yet, the Giants are just a few games out of a wild-card spot in the muddle of the NL, still very much alive, still very much in play, with a lot of their key guys expected back in the second half. They’re still in the race; according to Fangraphs, their chances of making the playoffs stand at 22.9%. — Olney“
There are too many playoff spots now. They’ve gone too far with it…
Agree.
Agree Loo. That and too many pitcher roster spots. It’s a fucking “specialist” game now.
If you let the 85 win team in, may as well give the 84 win team a chance, too. Going back to a single wild card would be cleaner.
It talks to the mediocrity of the NL. And all those playoff spots.
In the Calif. Central Valley today it is 112, and there’s some humidity. Stepping outside means slamming into a wall of heat.
There’s few things in sports more futile than watching the Brewers try to beat the Dodgers. The Dodgers have steamrolled the Brewers a few times in the playoffs lately. The Brewers are a fake “good team.”
No wonder their manager left to go to the Cubs.
Here ya go zumiee . . . Triple double; win against the best team in the league; and, an All Star too.
https://www.cnn.com/2024/07/06/sport/caitlin-clark-wnba-triple-double-record-spt-intl/index.html
Thanks! I have the game recorded on the DVR, and am going to watch it later tonight.
The WNBA All Star game should be fun. The All Star team is the best of the non-Olympians, and the game will be the Olympic team vs. the All Stars, so should be a more competitive game than that travesty NBA All Star slop game.
Nice and cool here at 103F. We have the Pay Fire in Placerville though, where it is 108F, with gusting winds. I understand they have begun evacuations of the city near the airport. Checked in with Chi a few minutes ago and he is doing well.
Hoping for the best!
I have a few relatives somewhat near the Oroville fires.
84F and clear, light wind, here about 15 miles W of Seattle. Big weekend for power and sailboats out on the Sound…

Nice Snarkk – but I think you might have gotten the last photo of Fredo before he got whacked…
Clark got the first ever triple double by a rookie in the WNBA, as the Indy Fever defeated the NY Liberty, the team with the best record so far. It’s the biggest win so far for the Fever in the Clark era. The game was nationally televised.
Clark and Reese will play together on the All Star team. They likely will also be teammates on the ’28 Olympic team, assuming the nation and the Earth haven’t been overwhelmed by apocalyptic events by then.
Clark and Reese are a mini version for the WNBA of what Magic and Bird brought to the NBA.
SF 13th in ML in runs scored. 24th in team ERA. Surprised me that our pitching has been the main culprit vs the offense.
It’s been that way pretty much the entire year. The extraordinarily bad performances of the starting pitcher subs for Snell and Beck (and Snell’s own shitty outings) are the primary reason the Giants are under 500. A few weeks ago, I posted the ERAs and innings pitched of Jeffries, Teng etc. At the time, their innings represented nearly a quarter of SF’s total for the year. Their composite ERA was between 6 and 7.
Great photos, Snarkk! I’d forgotten you’re living up there now.
Still laughing about Loo’s Fredo comment related to snarkk’s photo . . . Poor Fredo was about as useful as a knitted condom in the Corleone family.
RIP
One of the differences between the WNBA and the NBA is that an Indy Fever player missed all of last season because….she gave birth.
I still remember the Glenn Dickey article ripping Joe Montana for not timing the birth of one of his kids to happen outside the NFL season.
Does every Wimbledon update have to start with “across the pond”? I’m sure it was very witty the first 350,000 times…
Apropos of absolutely nothing: I don’t know how good Harrison might be, certainly has promise, but as trivial as it seems, I can’t stand watching him throw. That stupid wild stork follow through just bugs the hell out of me. If he becomes an ace, it won’t bother me so much, but at this point, dude needs to go watch some film ….
I’m glad you agree with me Paul. First time I saw him, I thought WTF is with that follow through– as in, there really isn’t one. I think it explains a lot of why he’s always up in the zone, and getting clobbered up there…
Yes, you know how they say “he pulled the string on that pitch” like a change-up, but he’s pulling that f-ing string every pitch. Needs to go watch film of Seaver, Clemens, MadBum, with driving follow-throughs. But who knows, no one ever corrected it or adjusted it before… it just doesn’t seem like good form. Strong follow-throughs generally promote more accuracy and speed. Not to mention he’s out of position to field a sharp come-backer. One good pop from that might make him change.
I’m totally with you on ALL of that…
That definintely could have been Fredo’s last fishing trip, but it’s the wrong mountain. The real one would have had the top of Heavenly Valley Ski Resort in the background. I’ve skiied some decent places before, like Zermatt — under the Matterhorn — and Telluride, but I gotta say going across the Skyline trail at the top of Heavenly looking down at that super blue Lake Tahoe in the middle of snow covered mountains — that view is just fantastic, world class — really hard to beat…

100% agree Snarkk!
