Webb Stumbles
Three games under .500. Four to play before the all star break. Run the table to end the first half over .500? It’s definitely doable but do we have the horses to do it?

Nothing would surprise me at this point.
Gausman vs. Hicks…who blinks first? Giants should have most of pen rested. Should be nice day in SF, mid 70s through game time as heat continues everywhere outside SF.
As James said you can appreciate randomness of what happened to Webb, but next inning there was plenty of loud contact. Bassitt got win last night, further evidence of how meaningless that stat is in evaluating SPs.
Seemed like all the hits in the 5th, except for maybe Turner’s, came on 0-2 or 1-2 counts. Webb was getting ahead of guys but not finishing.
Wisely with 2 terrible bonehead plays helped open the floodgates, he is not a SS nor is Fitzgerald.Hey I like them in the youth movement and bat potential but defensively they both are still deer in the headlights.SS and 1B is their biggest need upgrades at the deadline but 6 years of Farhan says nothing gets done but AJ Pollock the sequel..
FWIW, the lead off double in the 6th could have been caught by Ramos. Loud outs usually get buried in the overall story when a pitcher escapes via a few of them. Besides the fly ball Ramos didn’t get, there was one other hard hit ball against Webb that inning, the others were grounders that went through, one at 70 mph.
I’m not making excuses for Webb, but to go from cruising along to utter collapse usually requires a measure of bad luck. It’s why baseball loves pitchers who K hitters. There’s no luck involved.
Missed opportunity for Giants last night, as 3 WC teams ahead of them Braves Cards Padres all lost. Cards lost both ends of doubleheader to Royals. Meanwhile DBax and Mets both won.
Just have to wait and see how SS sorts itself out. Wisely didn’t have great night last night, Fitz botched routine groundball night before. giants don’t have anyone beyond High A ball beside Schmitt ready to cover that spot.
H S Kim rated 5th best NL on Baseball Savant for outs above average, great going to his right into hole. J H Lee’s buddy and played for Melvin in SD. If he’s available in off season he would be great get alongside Chapman on left side of IF.
Maybe I’m the only one who thought that the groundball Wisley whiffed on yesterday took a crazy high hop …. I saw him make a much tougher play the night before on a smash to second. Presumably, his ability to handle a ball like that isn’t affected by which side of the infield he’s on. No justification for fumbling the DP.
Hoping ray and corn on the come back soon and that hicks goes to BP
The worst thing about yesterday is that Webb didn’t solidify the one hope this team has, which is that the starting pitchers are going to make a difference. Snell and Webb with back to back nice outings would have felt good. But the reality is that at least one of those rehab projects has got to be solid out the gate, too. They can’t take a month to get right.
Kat may be right that Wisely is no shortstop, but I usually think of range and arm strength as the limiting factors. Fumbling DP exchanges could just as easily sink him at second.
It’s hard to win games, let alone close ones, when the SS position is in disarray. Blaming the latest occupiers of that position is not appropriate, blaming the guy who put them and the team in that situation is — Farhan…
Fitz and Wisely are in there now and they have been hitting OK. It’s their ops to show they belong at this level so whether they sink or swim is totally on them. They are not ML OFs and this is their chance to stay here. It’s to Z credit Giants have this much depth in first place.
Ahmed is very highly rated SS defensively signed as backup, who can’t hit, and Luciano while he hit the ball hard struggled mightily to field one. Would you rather they kept Ahmed–says about no one.
Z had Correa all but signed 2 years ago til physios voiced concerns. He was awful last year rebounded this year, but Twins on hook for 4 more years at which time he’ll be 34 by end of season. would you rather Giants kept him and renegotiated deal with Boras?
Except for Luciano. we haven’t been developing anyone to be a SS, we are developing utility guys. Now Luciano is taking reps at 2B.
Still very up in the air about the trade deadline. Who would we trade that anyone would want? Soler? Chapman? Conforto? The whole bullpen except Doval who I guess is untouchable along with Webb, Heliot, and Bailey?
Wade? Yaz? Mr. Ed?
Tom Murphy is about to come off the IL so I’m guessing he’ll be on the block.
Trade Wade, Contorto, Yaz, Soler, Flores, and Hicks. Get prospects for them, and trade them for Kim and Vladdy Jr. and throw in who the fuck ever from the minors.
Kim and Lee are besties and adding a legit bat like Vlad would be great. The IF would be set.
Didn’t see this unca before writing what I did below . . . Regardless, I agree with you (my #5 suggestion below).
By the by, just reviewed yesterday’s thread and just for me, I agree with the Flapper (forgot who said this) whom said, they can’t get another pet again – too painful. I have had to put down 3 dogs and I wont do it again. That being said, my daughter is already asking about a pet. Never had a cat, so I might be open to that. Regardless, again, sorry for your pain the last couple of days. Like others here, I understand what you’re going through. Take care buddy.
Haven’t seen the Giants play much this year, so what you guys say here is what I am basing my thoughts on doing something significant at the trade deadline . . .
Number 1, we are 10 games out from the Bums. Consequently, during the 1960s, it would be stupid to trade if our goal was to win the pennant. However, were only 2.5 games behind the Pads for a spot. So there’s that.
Number 2, we haven’t shown squat that we are capable of being a .500 team, much less a playoff team (and even less a strong playoff team).
Number 3, we have zero financial restraints (except potentially for the ones in Johnson Jr.’s skull), so that is a positive to make trade(s) at the deadline.
Number 4, is our schedule favorable going forward to the end of September, to make a run??? I don’t think so, as we have a lot of games against strong teams, including San Diego and St. Louis, whom are ahead of us in the playoff chase. Conversely, that could be a good thing too, as we get to play the teams already in the playoffs in our division.
Reasons to trade, but ONLY for the future (#5) – If the Giants are realistically out of the playoff race, we might trade away some veterans with expiring contracts (or those Z special 2 year contracts) for younger players or prospects to build for the future. This strategy frees up playing time for younger talent and adds depth to the farm system.
Me? The last choice, #5, is what I would do.
Took his eye off it. Game will humble you.
Maybe use an opener when Hicks pitches? This ain’t working anymore.
Hicks makes me use an opener…
Thanks, all for the thoughts and stories. It is gonna be hard for me not to get another pet. I grew up with dogs, and i’m usually the one that when going to someone’s house, introduce myself to the animals first. Kathy calls me the dog whisperer.
People don’t seem to give a shit about me but their pets like me. And I’m fine with that.
Yeah, if they want to get good in the near future, instead of doing these stupid 2 year opt-outs, they need to trade for talent and then sign it. Having Vlad at 1st, Wisely at 2nd, Kim at SS and Chapman at 3rd, I could live with that.
And having Lee in CF will cover up a lot of fuckups from Matos/Ramos at the corner OF spots.
This would be a strong team. Maybe a 90 win team.
It’ll get better, Chuck…
At people’s homes, I also introduce myself to the animals first – then their pets…
This one may be over.
Ramos gets two of em back.
There we go. looks like they both blinked.
Per Bowden in TA, he says Jays GM told him in june on podcast they weren’t trading Bichetter or Vlad Jr. Lot of teams looking for 1b help, so any offer for him would have to be overwhelming. he’s 25 years old, almost any team in baseball would want him.
Jays are already dead last AL for HRs and 12th runs scored, just don’t see this happening.
You’re prolly right. We’ll end up with fucking Turner.
I was pushing hard for the Giants to sign Turner and Kenley when they became FA’s after the 2016 season. I still think I was right. Could’ve really strengthened our team and weakened theirs. A direct attack on them would’ve really made a statement…
In my fantasy world I would be all in getting SS Bo Bichette.Yeah he’s having a down year but that whole team is.Bo has a lifetime.290 average with power and .800 OPS a perfect solution to are SS needs at 26 he’s hitting his prime years.
Cheaper trade could be RH Vaughn from Whitesox’s to play 1B in a platoon with Wade which is more Farhan style..
Bellinger would be awesome due to his versatility 1B/OF positions but no way Z makes a splash with all the prospects needed to get either him are Bichette.. But those 2 fill both the top needs… imo
Bellinger just went on IL with broken F-U finger…
Gad I dislike that guy. Plus Cubs deal he has gives him opt outs every year.
mlbtr said Jays waived Kiermaier the guy who just made diving grab in CF.
further, “Kiermaier is still on the 40 man roster and can continue to play for the Jays while on waivers.”
Fuck. 9th place guy again. Fall behind and forced to throw a strike.
Dang. that was guy Hicks needed to get. 2 outs bases empty and 3 hits later jays score again.
Wow didn’t know that Loo, well that’s off the table now thanks for the corresponding news update, you are the man!
Question do each team have a professional ball rubber?
Heck I rub my balls but know magic happens…
If they do make any major trade, I agree with Blade it should be as sellers looking to the future. This game just re-emphasizes the one big need they have, if the WC is still a goal: starting pitchers. They already have two coming on board.
On cue, 2 pitches later they’re down another run.
OK, Hicks to the pen. The shine has worn off.
Well, at least he hit Turner before he got pulled.
The Giants once had a Horwitz…

He looks like he’s wearing a bonnet.
Hicks solidified his BP position now..
The starters now should be Webb,Snell,Harrison,Birdsong &Ray/Cobb( after the break)
Rachel Ray and Cobb Salad may sound great for lunch, but it sucks as a philosophy for building a pitching staff. Esp when both won’t pitch till August at the earliest.
It’s not a philosophy. It just means they don’t have to make a trade to fill their biggest need.
Pffffffffffffffft. Sure. Go with that. How’s Winn doing? Oh yeah. Hicks? Well, not so hot. Harrison? Maybe a 3-4? Cobb and Ray haven’t pitched, so, yeah we don’t need pitching.
It took you until 10:12 to come up with that drivel?
If Soler hits one more 107 mph ball that doesn’t leave the park, they should cut him. I can’t stand watching it any longer.
Giants have warning track power today, Jays putting ball in seats. Soler just can’t catch a break. I think ISO is lowest in 10 years.
Man I wish we still had Gausman dude can still pitch with nasty deception!
Only thing is his glove like all idiots that wear colored gloves is wrong.Gausman use to wear a real cool glove with the Giants now this shit blue like even are own OF Matos wears which is dumb as horseshit.
I still haven’t seen any explanation about Doval’s switching back and forth between a black and a brown glove…
”I was pushing hard for the Giants to sign Turner and Kenley when they became FA’s after the 2016 season. I still think I was right.”
Might have saved the Giants from the Longoria deal.
And Melonhead…
Wilmer’s next stop…

Thanks Loo. I’ve seen FDTV promote an org like that in SoCal. They give a charity dinner and over weekend ask for donations to help care for older retired horses.
Poor Wilmet. Seems like he’s 32 going on 42. Melvin has stuck him back in lineup but he’s just not making hard contact like he used to.
Btw in mlbtr link to Bellinger going on IL, the guy Cubs are calling up to replace was one of players Giants sent in Kris Bryant deal, OF Alexander Canario.
Luciano has solo HR tonight for Cats vs. Salt Lake, #4 on season. Leading off playing SS.
A Yankees-Giants trade to get DJ LeMahieu out of the picture entirely (msn.com)
Offering Randy Heliot, perhaps?
Can’t imagine Giants trading Chapman. Conforto maybe if Yanks want another OF bat/DH type with experience playing there.
110 degrees today again in the Central Valley. 100 years of humans pumping petroleum exhaust into the atmosphere hasn’t gone unnoticed by the planet.
