More Losing
The dream of finishing over .500 by the break….is dead. I miss the days of carefree boldfaced threads. Three with the Twins to finish off an extremely disappointing first half. No other way to look at it, this first half sucked.

Agreed. The little lift from Winn, Harry, and Hicks faded fast and the shoddy defense and untimely hitting has dragged this season down. At least they are weeding out Slater, Ahmed, and the other dead weights they signed.
It’s a long season and maybe Rachel Ray makes a mean Cobb salad and they get something out of Snell. Still in the chase, as they say.
Is there hope in that the losses to Cleveland and Toronto didn’t involve a lot of errors and baserunnning blunders?
Ray will pitch after break in one of two series, maybe Cobb soon after. Hicks experiment has run its course. Velo is down and he’s giving up way more bombs than earlier in season. Said it himself, he’s reaching back for 97-98 he had earlier and barely getting 94. Harrison still work in progress and also slowed by injuries. Add in Wade Jr., Lee, Estrada and Flores too much to overcome.
Kids (Fitz Wisely Matos) get their shot let’s see what they can do, Birdsong/Bivens too.
Rodriguez too, looked good yesterday.
Even when Ray and Cobb come off the IL, doubt they’ll be able to go 5 strong any time soon.
I don’t see us matching up with anyone for a quick fix trade, maybe a couple of the ol’ change of scenery type trades. I’m guessing what we see is what we’ll get in the second half. Hopefully these guys play out of their minds.
5 strong. lol. That’s a pretty low bar to aspire to. If they can’t go 5 then what is the point? Even after the IR stints.
Flores should be the next guy to jettison. I mean really. Trade Conforto to the Yanks for prospects, and do the same with Yaz/Boston. Ride the year out. Try to pry Kim from the BJs and/or Vlad after the season.
Yeah, hopefully I’m wrong about the innings.
Villar and Luciano both homered last night for Sac; Luciano also made error at SS, #11.
Signed at age 17, now listed as 6-1/178. So hard to project what guys like this from DR will grow into. Tatis Jr. was signed by White Sox as 16 year old and traded to Padres a year later for James Shields. Now listed as 6-3/215 lbs. and guarantee that was nothing he must have looked like as a kid.
Pads moved him off SS and he’s become excellent RF though still prone to bad decisions and showing off arm. Not trying to compare the two just wondering what Giants scouts first saw in Luciano/projected, and what future holds for him. He’s still only 22 same age as Matos; Ramos will be 25 in September and just coming through now.
IIRC. most scouts said Luciano wouldn’t stick at SS. I’ve always thought moving him to 3B might be the right move. Worked for Matt Williams.
yeah I’ve seen same thing, that he isn’t SS, for years, including fangraphs columns on prospects. if he can hit I don’t see why he couldn’t be moved and learn a different spot, especially OF.
We have some stretches of playing good baseball and then it turns the other way. I do agree with the people who say this year is better than last and we do show some flashes of fun ball. And it does look like our farm is finally producing some good players But this season still comes down to being subpar baseball.
We had high hopes going into this season. And for good reason! But with Snell absolutely shitting his slacks and JH-Lee getting hurt right off the bat we’ve tanked about as you might have expected. There’s still time to turn it around of course and thank GOD Slater got hurt so Ramos got his shot. But nearly everything will have to fall into place in the 2nd half.
Pirates pitcher Paul Skenes named the NL starter for the A/S game..A good call and a network dream and for fans to see his electric stuff avg 98-101..
And why not he’s be fantastic? coming off a controversial outing where he got pulled after 7 innings of no hit ball with 11K’s on 99 pitches. Sick and tired of teams protecting there pitchers, your not in line for a no hitter very often let him play it out ferchrissakes..
I think sr. locojuan makes good point at 8:10. Ray and Cobb aren’t doing anything like what Gausman did to Giants yesterday by going strong 7, maybe ever. Snell isn’t 7 inning guy either. Yes all of above can help Giant stay competitive but pen will still have to be in major play behind Birdsong or SP not named Webb. Harrison won’t see September either due to innings restraint. If he lasts 5 tonight he likely has another 25 innings (110 or 10% over last year total) left before they shut him down.
Just not enough “there” there not to sell off those with some value, and I’d include Doval.
The average start in the NL is 5.1 innings. The average Giants start is 5.1 innings, a number that includes quite a few starts by openers. However things play out, other teams will be relying just as heavily on their bullpens.
Maybe so, but we are trending down. I think around 4.9 in June and 4.7 in the 9 games in July.
Except for Webb averaging around 7 innings, my guess is that the other 4 starters will be on limited pitch counts, which I assume will result in less innings in August.
Beside Twins (53-40) Giants still have to play O’s M’s and Royals (all lot better teams than Jays lol) in AL, 2 series with Brewers Padres and DBax and 4 games each with Dodgers and Braves.
sounds like 2019–as Flav said at time, too many teams to pass to get into playoffs.
As the cries of keep hope alive from one of the only Flap optimists start to fade, I thought I’d mention a couple of non-Chisholm Jazz related things that have brightened my mood. Saw Damn Skippy last night, with 3/4 of TJ Kirk in the line up. Really a fun show. Scott Amendola is just about my favorite drummer in the world. I got a copy of Harold Lands’ “Jazz Impressions of Folk Music” and it’s been in heavy rotation for a few weeks now. A folxploitation artifact from the early 60s that sounds just great.
Cool, James. I heard few tunes off Mingus Sextet Jazz Workshop 1964 compilation on Mosaic Sunday, with Eric dolphy Clifford Jordan and Johnny Coles in front line, only time group was recorded here unfortunately. So I’ve been watching youtube live concerts the same group did in Europe couple months before Dolphy’s death. Really enjoy Dolphy on bass clarinet.
Thanks for pitching numbers too; lot of teams looking for pitching including Dodgers. Maybe Hicks helps pen out.
Brisbee had interesting column today about trades. Kinda reminds me of what I hear about warriors–lot of Giants are more valuable to them (maybe 2025 too) than anywhere else.
Have you heard Mal Waldron’s The Quest? Dolphy with some beautiful clarinet stuff on that. Really hope the W’s 24 moves pan out better than the Giants’.
Thanks James for mentioning Scott. He is one of my favorite drummers too. Certainly, a world class musician!
Bassbaldy, saw him in a duo with Wil Blades on Hammond a few years ago doing Ellington tunes. Fantastic.
Thanks James, I don’t know Scott Amendola’s stuff so I’ll have to check him out.
Cool, definitely check him out, although it’s the usual lament, seeing him live is when the magic happens. A combination of technique, restraint, and charisma that wins you over. If that makes sense.
Phils City Connect unis are awful. They aren’t playing well either as A’s up on them 6-2 in 8th.
Miller wipes Phils out in 9th and they get 6 shutout innings out of pen for 6-2 W on road.
This guy Ryan pitching for the Twins is no slouch (albeit, he has slowed down a bit his last few games). See what’s what tonight.
Huh. Ryan was born in SF and went to Sir Francis Drake High. Yet another guy we’ve never faced that will dominate?
Here we go with Dirty Harry, Magnum Force.
Anybody who’s co-favorite player is Jonathan Sanchez, is ok by me.
Read something from Z, now can’t find it, about buying or selling in the next 2 weeks: seemed to kind of throw down the gauntlet at the feet of the veterans, pick it up or we’ll sell off and go with the kids the rest of the way. Let’s see…
“It isn’t MY fault!”
He actually goes through the ritual of accepting the bullshit “buck stops here” blame all the time. It’s every bit as dimwitted as FireSabeanNow.
Soler triples.
Not sure what was more surprising, Soler’s leadoff triple or the Giants getting him in.
Ha, yeah you right, Mac.
Probably didn’t take OF practice. Too good for it…
A little harsh, Loo!
I’m in a bad mood. Why the fuck are the Giants playing the Minnesota Twins? It’s like watching a cartoon…
Hah!!!
Harrison has that comebacker down.
Magnum Force is effectively wild so far. Very nice stab there.
Not use to the Giants getting 3 runs this early thinking it’s a mirage..
They’re fortunate to have 3 off this guy. He kinda reminds me of Bauer. His pitching, that is.
This is the fuckin slowest game of the year…
Great catch by Ramos coming in which he obviously does better then going back on balls for sure..
Denard Span play by play caller for Twins?
Man he definitely dyed his just for men beard to help him get the gig..
Didn’t Loo use to post a picture of him looking like a black Moses?
That inside the park home run they showed was awesome. You don’t see too many where the hitter gets to jog home.
Now MF’s ineffectivey wild.
I got Slap Shot on TCM while watching the game, man, that movie is still funny.
Hey nothing like the Hanson brothers to up your entertainment value Mac.. Loved when they got in a brawl before the National Anthem and the referee had this wtf look on his face..
Epic. Love that movie.
Up until about 40 years ago, every other bartender in NY was named Joe Ryan…

Another triple, another run!
Can’t believe Harry’s still out there.
And they pull him…
Another 5.1 from the starter.
It’s really 5.333333333333333333333333333333………….
but it can’t be that!
Hey, James started it!
Bailey with the dropsies tonight.
Their’s your 5.1 innings for a Giants starter James!
Nice job by Harrison overall, Twins only got 1run with 2nd &3 rd one out on that Great Wisely catch helping out .Walker good job as well..
Would Thairo really not be able to hit if he was just a little more selective? The previous two hitters had just walked.
Stay hot Wisely!
The Wise one needs a dinger for the cycle.
Why do umpires feel compelled to call a strike on 3-0 pitches inches off the plate? They do it every motherfucking time.
Wade with the error for not diving.
Walker got out of that nicely.
Yeah, baby!! Contorto to the rescue. He can look so good at times.
We are doing to them what teams usually do to us. Fail to score on an easy opportunity, then give up a few.
Conforto banging it the other way.
When you drink out of the covenant cup for internal life you need to choose Wisely..
Bailey may need glasses. He’s missed 3-4 balls tonight.
Again!
Ballgame already!
Victory!
Game.
Doval gets extra slider practice.
