Sucking Nationally
I can’t remember specific games or players, but when I was a teenager it was also so exciting to see a Giant get picked for the all star game. But they always seemed to play terrible. Atlee was the most memorable implosion but I know there were many others. Then we had a stretch where Giants players did the team proud. Then there was last night. And, I didn’t even watch it. My interest in these all star festivities has been at a lifetime low this week.
Your last line is probably true for the whole country- certainly our demographic anyway.
We’re dinosaurs, bro…
Well there was 2012. 2 scoreless innings for SP Matt Cain, Pablo starting 3b with 3 run triple off Verlander (talk about things to come) and Melk, who had single with one out and scored to start 5 run first and 2 run bomb in 4th. Posey started too. 8-0 NL.
The whole concept of all star games in every sport seems to be outdated…
It’s all about the Benjamins. The whole league is less interesting than it used to be and so is the all star game. In 1963 Willie Mays made 100,000.00 a year. Now they give just about any jackwad who doesn’t even have the basic fundamentals down twice that. Advertising baby that’s where it’s at.
Didn’t Rick Reuschel have a bad ASG back in the day?
Yes. 1989 Bo knows (MVP of 5-3 AL win) and Boggs homered off him in first inning.
Yeah, thought it was Bo Jackson.
I can’t imagine anyone buying those ASG jerseys.
USA blowing up Serbia by 26 late 3rd. Second unit Bam Booker AD Ant and Halliburton. Steph had 18 in first half when they led by 14.
Serbia was supposed to be the big threat with their interior game. AD is having his way with these guys amazingly enough.
Giants ought to put Webb on the short IL to give his arm a rest. It’s probably hanging halfway off, he’s the only starter consistently going 6+ since the season started. Giants need to play at .600 the rest of the way to get into the WC hunt in the mid 80Ws. I just don’t see how they will accomplish winning at that clip without some major trade bumping this offense. The starter pitching cavalry supposedly coming to the rescue is a hope, not a guarantee…
Come on. Sitting Webb will not help the cause. It’ll further fuck the season. Futile as it may be.
Getting Rachel Ray and Cobb Salad back might help. Having Soler and Chappie hit would help too.
Yankee fans here screaming for a closer. Would it take a lot to part with Doval?
Vurdugo? Ben Rice worth a look?
How desperate are they?
Hard to say but Holmes been brutal lately…
Webb is at 124 innings. Right on pace for his last couple seasons of 192 innings and 216.
It won’t kill him to pitch ~200 innings this year. It wasn’t long ago 250 was the norm. Then 300.
He hasn’t exactly set the world on fire recently. I think his innings are catching up to him. If he misses a start or two, the Giants won’t spin off their axis…
Well, what? Starters are now built to pitch 150 innings? When will they lower the win threshold to 4 innings? He’s our ace. He’s there to pitch. And he just pitched one inning in 9 days. So he got his rest. Ask him. You think he wants to take it easy?
Exactly Unc. 65 games left/13 starts. At 6 per game right around 200 total. Giants should listen on Doval; no idea what offers might be. Closer is such up/down position with lot of volatility. I’d rather trade him than move him around to setting up in 7th or 8th.
Don’t look now but Verdugo putting up worse numbers than…Yaz. In completely opposite RF than Oracle.
By lot of different measures Doval getting hit lot harder than before (OPS and slugging against both up 100 points/OB 50), and walking more guys. I think it’s command–he just can’t put ball where it needs to be. Throwing way more sliders too. As to that, regardless of what Bailey puts down he’s the one with ball in his hand–if he doesn’t want to throw it then it ain’t happening. He’s leaving it up and getting crushed.
If Webb were to start Friday at Rox it would mean he’s pitched 1 inning total over 8 days since going 5 last Wed. That’s almost like having an IL stint anyway. I think if Melvin told him he wasn’t going to pitch coming out of the break into last 2 months of season, Webb would be pretty pissed. And rightfully so.
I’m likely one of the few here, that says, “smell the coffee,” as the playoffs are a pipe dream; and, even if they make it, what’s the point? Does anyone really think this team will go far in the playoffs? Particularly, when this team has shown jack mostly all season long. I think their longest win streak is 3 games. Meh.
I want Zaidi selling/trading our veterans for prospects/young players because we are already on the cusp of really being out of contention. Another 3 or 4 game losing streak will ensure that. Seriously, this is where we have an opportunity to trade away veterans (with or without expiring contracts) for younger players or prospects to build for the future. This strategy frees up playing time for younger talent and adds depth to the farm system. Right now “real” contending teams are desparate for help, e.g., Yankees perhaps as Loo alluded to. We wont have this opportunity again in the off season to score one or more potentially good, young players.
What younger talent would they be freeing up playing time for? Other than letting go Flores for Villar, there aren’t any. If they wanted to give Schmitt more time they could send down Fitz. 3.5 games out of playoff, they aren’t tanking. Any playoff home games do generate significant revenue.
“potentially (very key word) good, young players” aren’t coming Giants way unless you dump Webb Ramos or Bailey which isn’t happening No one is doing that for Conforto (who is rental and FA 2025) or any of other usual suspects. Chapman is the highest WAR guy on entire team and way too valuable to let go.
Willie, I mispoke if you thought ALL the veterans, i.e., my point is sometimes you have to “fold your cards in a hand of poker.” There is NOTHING wrong with trying to improve for next season. That was my point. As was discussed earlier, how about Doval? Or is he untouchable in your eyes? There are a myriad of ways to improve your team and Zaidi should be able to do that. If it has a dual purpose of tipping us into the playoffs, great. However, the charade that this team is or has been playoff caliber up to this point is hilarious. Prove me wrong.
Sure I’d listen on Doval. But I think they are solid with 6 positions. Wisely Wade Jr Ramos Bailey Chapman and Lee. Unless they trade away young controllable pitching I don’t see deadline bringing much help via selling. So I would keep all above, hope for best and see what happens.
Thing about playoffs is context of all similar teams in NL. Healthy pitching staff and Giants are right in middle of mix. Other than Braves all the others battling for WC are basically equal.
Any young-ish potential-stud shortstops out there for the getting, one nice piece to bring in to solve what has become a key issue? Fitz and Wisely are great but not really pegged for SS of the future, as apparently neither is Luciano anymore….
AZ was scraping the bottom of the barrel most of last year. And they were very close to winning everything. That’s baseball. Get hot at the right time. Esp with everyone making the playoffs.
If our pitching staff ever gets to where it should be, we could do a lot of damage.
That being said, if teams want Conforto, trade him for prospects. Same with Wilbur, Yaz, and Doval. They are not the future. And the future is NOT now. Chappie stays. Even tho he has the Farhan-special-opt-out.
It is dependent on the pitching anyway, so hope that Rachel Ray’s Cobb Salad for Dirty Harry produces some stability for the rotation.
