Summer Time… And The Livin’s Easy
What an amazing time. The British Open just underway. Later on today the San Diego Open begins with 2 great titans, San Dawg and Big Flavor fighting it out. Baseball back tomorrow. A daily update from Zumiee about the WNBA that will go largely ignored. And then the opening of Del Mar on Saturday. As Ferris Bueller said, “life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while you could miss it….”
Come live here. You’d prefer to miss it…
Day early but Kent Desormeaux has mount in 3rd at Del Mar. Most of usual suspects are riding including Kaz Kimura and Mike Smith. Looking forward to this.
The ‘posting on the old thread blues . . .’ lqtm.
AZ was scraping the bottom of the barrel most of last year. And they were very close to winning everything. That’s baseball. Get hot at the right time. Esp with everyone making the playoffs.
If our pitching staff ever gets to where it should be, we could do a lot of damage.
That being said, if teams want Conforto, trade him for prospects. Same with Wilbur, Yaz, and Doval. They are not the future. And the future is NOT now. Chappie stays. Even tho he has the Farhan-special-opt-out.
It is dependent on the pitching anyway, so hope that Rachel Ray’s Cobb Salad for Dirty Harry produces some stability for the fucking rotation. And Webbie just got his rest.
Numbers don’t lie.
I think 86 wins is the target for a sure WC spot. Giants need to win 39 out of the remaining 64 to get to 86 wins. That’s 39-25, a .609 clip. There is no way in hell this team plays that well, it would be a minor miracle. Plus, way too many teams ahead of them for the last WC spot. Even given that they have a pretty easy schedule until September. I’m with blade’s post yesterday, sell some dudes now (Conforto, Yaz) and get what you can for them. Even if SF squeaked into the playoffs, this team is going nowhere, unless the rotation turns into the 2010 staff…
Ditto snarkk
There are so many shitty teams in the NL that a losing record could reach the playoffs. But as I keep saying get what you can for Yaz, Contorto, Wilbur, and Doval. They aren’t the future.
I’d keep Chappie as his defense is solid, and they have to at least try to keep some semblance of offense, and hope against hope that Soler can get off the stick.
But you KNOW that this front office is gonna say “We are getting our pitching back so we don’t have to improve the team” as they sit on their thumbs and spin. They’ll likely get a mid-level reliever for cash considerations and call it a day.
Dbax were 2 under .500, about where SF is now, as late as August 11…yet still won 84 games and got into playoffs. Where they knocked Brewers and Dodgers out.
Giants in last 15 games have won series vs. Dodgers Twins Braves, all solid teams well over .500 destined for playoffs. More solid starts by Snell like last 2 (12 innings/0 runs) and others can make things interesting.
Cards are 4 over .500, Mets 3, Pads and AZ 1 each. Giants right there with them despite all the injuries with just as good a chance to get in.
I hate to say it, but I only see “Pee Wee Johnson” getting rid of Zaidi next season if attendance goes down significantly. That wont happen as the “Facebook housewives” and their dunderhead husbands continue to support this team. For what reason, I have zero idea.
Conor Gillaspie is 37 today. As K n K would say, good Giant.
Btw, on version of Whisper Not recorded 1957 by Benny Golson on OJC “New York Scene”, solo pretty restrained, as he has lot of pieces in ensemble (couple of whom also solo) including trumpet French horn trombone bari and alto.
“A daily update from Zumiee about the WNBA that will go largely ignored.”
Lulz
The WNBA can never hope to be as riveting as golf, but the league soldiers on! Clark just set the WNBA single game assist record with 19. More than Olympian point guard Chelsea Gray ever got. (Gray’s nickname is Point Gawd, which has to be one of the worst sports nicknames ever.)
Clark’s Indy team is a few years from being an elite team. It has three terrific players and the rest of the roster is serious meh. The team needs a couple more solid draft picks.
Zum, I watched some of that. 3 terrific players, no. Not the first time I’ve watched Aliyah Boston give up position and points on defense to players who outwork her. Clark is fine, but that team threw game away in last minute with silly turnovers and allowed a team that was 5-17 to score 101 points and beat them.
My whole takeaway from Clark fandom is that I hope they realize how many other top players there are in the league, who have been there for years. And I hope they can respect them. Maybe some of them will look up Breanna Stewart wiki page or WNBA career stats.
Clark and Ionescu turned down being in the All Star weekend three point contest. I think both feel it’s kind of beneath where they’re at in the league now, as two of the biggest stars. Why take a chance on having an off night and looking bad in the contest? There’s nothing to be gained.
Really? She’s pulling a Bonds and is too big for the league? This will only bring more scorn.
it makes her look like a prima Donna. After 1/2 a season in the league.
wow. Imagine Larry Bird turning that shit down his rookie year.
Candy-ass chicken move.
I just wish they’d track butts in seats instead of tickets sold. If this teams starts heading further south, it’ll be dramatic.
Next year’s schedule is out — it seems to get released earlier every year — and what a shock, Giants open on the road: at Cincy & Houston before starting home slate vs. Seattle. Already looking at Yanks series in the Bronx April 11-13.
Chuck, Clark’s situation is different. In a half season she is already, by far, the biggest star in the history of the WNBA. She has already exponentially increased interest and revenue in the league. She owes the league nothing at this point. The league owes her.
Still, it’s a pussy move. Just when she was getting people on her side, shes gonna act the bigshot.
She actually comes across as pretty humble, all things considered. She passed on doing the contest. Not really a big deal.
People will be curious to see Clark and Reese vs. the Olympic team. It’s a national broadcast on prime time Saturday night. Hopefully it’s a real game and not a travesty like the NBA All Star game.
“The WNBA will earn an estimated $2.2 billion as part of the NBA’s multi-year deals with NBC, Amazon and Disney for broadcasting rights, more than tripling the value of the league’s media rights amid increased demand for women’s basketball.”
“the new deal is worth approximately $200 million annually. The previous rights deal was worth only $50 million. Four times as much money will come pouring into the WNBA once the new deal kicks in, and in this case, it truly is a rising tide lifts all boats situation.”
And, as mentioned before, the teams are flying in private jets for the first time.
Charles Barkley has spoken out strongly against the NBA streaming some of its games. Baseball has been increasing the number of streamed games. It’s not a great trend, IMO.
My parents NEVER streamed. I would imagine folks with parents in their 70s, 80s, and 90s don’t stream as well. Perhaps, even a large % of 60 year olds do not stream.
My point is that MLB, NBA, and NFL just wrote those fans off. My step dad can barely use his Iphone, much less find a streaming game on his pc or phone. Is it any wonder that MLB is not popular? Not only a lot of fans can’t recognize the game they grew up with, but they can’t find a game on television because they keep moving the fucking games week to week.
The TV world is still all about the fleecing. Cable used to be great till they added 300+ useless channels and you had to pay for all of them. Then they went the opposite way now where you get nothing and have to pay a separate fee for whatever channel you want to watch.
Streaming came along and was great until now they are throwing in ads on all the streaming channels, and you have to pay to get them off.
I’m in my 70’s and I stream. I think youtube’s Sunday ticket is a little cheaper than Direct TV’s package was/is but it’s still out of my price range. I’m waiting for one of the providers to offer every Niner game for a fair price and then I am in. As it is I watch 5/6 games a year and listen to a couple. Sometimes I go to the sports bar and hang out.
Point taken Winder. I am almost 70 and I stream too. I think we are anomalies though, e.g., see Stix. My job entailed being on a PC when I worked; coupled with building them and/or replacing parts in personal PCs I have owned. Anyway, I just think that many older people likely do not stream.
.blade I agree. Sometimes I wish I never saw a computer. And my phone baffles me continually They are just too touchy.
Winder, your TV is an underpowered computer with a big screen.
James I guess now days TV’s are hooked up to the internet, so are toasters and washing machines it’s all a little much for me. All I’ve really asked for in the last 6 years is to not see or hear anything about Trump for just one day.
“Streaming” is simply a technical delivery mechanism. The fact that you can stream from a confusing array of providers is a result of business decisions. Ideally, there’d be a model that allowed you to stream all of your favorite team’s games directly from MLB for a monthly or season by season fee. The problematic regional networks would also disappear.
We are on a spur of the moment 2,000 mile roadtrip just to look at a house. This is just nuts.
New Orleans isn’t 2000 miles from the Carolina coast ….
Roundtrip it is and so is Ponchatoula.
Two day drive here (we dont do the 18 hours in one shot anymore), one day to see the place and a friend or 2, two dsys back.
safe travels
Ha, right, although you sure you’re not gonna just settle in?

USA today breaks down WC “quagmire” – here’s Giants commentary…
San Francisco Giants
Standing: 47-50, three games behind New York for final wild card spot
Why they’ll be there: The pitching cavalry is on its way. Injured starters Alex Cobb and former Cy Young winner Robbie Ray are almost ready to make their season debuts, and Blake Snell’s late surge before the half – he took a perfect game into the seventh inning of his last start – gives them a potentially daunting look from the mound.
Why they may fade: The offense continues to be an arrhythmic mess, continuing a three-year pattern of droughts and reliance on the home run ball since their 107-win season in 2021.
Stating their case: “I was on the team that had the best record in baseball. And then I’ve been on teams where in the beginning of August we were a game out of the division, right? And ended up, you know, we’re (messing) the bed. That’s kind of what happened. You can’t really pinpoint what went wrong, but just not letting little things affect you every day. That’s what causes six-game losing streaks or multiple series losses in a row. Staying away from that is the biggest thing.” – Starting pitcher Logan Webb
So, I just quickly checked the idea that the Giants are somehow reliant on HRs to win:
In wins, 59 bombs, in losses 37
The NL as a whole:
In wins 1025 bombs, in losses 525
In other words, this writer is just pulling stuff out of his ass. The Giants are less reliant on hitting home runs to win than the league is overall. Furthermore, the idea that the offense is inconsistent relative to other teams is sheer nonsense. The gaps both between OPS and runs scored in wins versus losses is significantly smaller for the Giants than the NL overall.
And can the idiot media do some simple math and stop saying the season is half over? It’s more like 60% as it usually is at the all star break…
I still use DVDs and CDs. The once fancy new technologies that are considered relics now.
I watched some of the men’s Olympic basketball team’s game tonight. It was kind of ragged, but their talent advantage is so huge it doesn’t matter.
The dreaded All Star break is over tomorrow, and let the games begin again.
Rockies series, then Dodgers series, then another Rockies series.
Dogs will get Betts back soon but not Muncy and have multiple pitchers on IL. I asked Dogs fan if they will bring back Betts to play SS and answer was this season yes but next year maybe not.
He actually grades in minus for D on Baseball Savant. They aren’t getting near as good season from J Heyward as last year, and brought back Outman whom they’d sent down earlier. Seems like moving Betts to SS (much more demanding than Rf), to cover for failed Lux experiment, messed up 2 positions.
Outman is not going to help Dogs either 122 AB’s 19 hits .156 avg from the kid from Redwood City who was promising when he first came up ( ROY candidate) now is overwhelmed..
Exactly AK. Such a weird team, totally top heavy lineup. Lux Chris Taylor ($13 million owed next year too) K Hernandez and new kid Biggio all hitting at Nick Ahmed level under .600 OPS. Heyward and Pages right around league average .700 OPS.
If you can navigate around the top of Ohtani Freeman Smith and Betts, plus T Hernandez, seems eminently more beatable team that Dodgers teams of past.
The global computer outage affecting airports, banks and other businesses today appears to stem at least partly from a software update issued by major US cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike. Unbelievable that one or two companies (I think Microsoft is the other culprit) holds so much power over the world.
I have zero clue whether my stock equities are up, down, sideways, or gone. I have gotten 3 different quotes on some of my holdings. Coupled with this, the S&P, DOW, Nasdaq, and Russell exchanges are showing different numbers depending on what site you go to, e.g., CNBC, Yahoo, CNN, etc.
Amazingly, WordPress and the Flap are not affected.
Hey from your time in Denver area, summer thundershowers common event?
WP obviously exists in its own oblivious world.
Yes Willie, Colorado and Denver can get their weather from 1 of 3 areas (Pacific, Gulf/Mexico, and Canada). Summer thundershowers are common. Best thing about Colorado is that 9 times out of 10, after a snow storm, it is sunny the next day (albeit, cold reflecting normal winter temperatures). Conversely, that isn’t the norm in the Sierras.
My time in the Rockies you could set you watch to the thunderstorms in the summer.
Around 3:00 the clouds would roll in and the show would start.
Cracking up . . . As Unca is absolutely correct. More times than not, Rockies night games would not be affected, but that wasn’t because the dark clouds and thunderstorms did not come through. No, it was because they missed that area of Denver.
Yeah, saw a game in Colo (and met Chi) and the sunset was glorious. Great game till Bochy did his one-hitter-per-batter schtick in the 7th-8th-and 9th and the Giants lost 8-7.
WP itself is built on open source code, not Microsoft. The Flap uses the wordpress.com hosting infrastructure, not Microsoft’s Azure service. Each WP site is a thing unto itself, which is why you can see differences in the base features at any one time. Flavor could have chosen to go it alone and deployed the Flap to Microsoft’s Azure platform instead of using WordPress.com. I think he has better things to do with his time.
James again assuming everyone is an idiot and no one has heard, seen, and/or read the news. Thanks James!
”Amazingly, WordPress and the Flap are not affected.” I just explained in general terms why they were not affected. I don’t assume you’re an idiot because it’s not entirely clear to you and you express some confusion.
I was being flippant with my original comment. You on the other hand, were being you (over compensating again). James, you were cut from a cloth that I wouldn’t wash my ass with. Seriously.
Xoot Jr. educating the unwashed masses (again). Even when not needed or warranted. For all that, the sly humor of the comment sails by.
lqtm.
C’mon guys, let’s act our ages (like me and Xoot did a few weeks ago). We’re all Giant fans, dammit!
hah! Who you kiddin?
Everybody, Nobody…
Harrison tonight–haven’t seen anything about rotation rest of week. so far he’s allowed fraction above more hits per 9 than most every other pitcher on staff not named Luke Jackson. This is not park to walk guys or put them on via HBP. Keep traffic down!
Over 67 games (33-34) last 2.5 months Giants have scored 311 runs and given up 318. Cutting down run differential but still allowing almost 5 runs a game is an issue.
I apologize James. I was out of line.
No worries, I’ll refrain from the tech stuff from now on. IT was my career and I’ve tried to limit my comments in that area to straightforward explanatory responses to others, ala Snarkk and Xoot when it comes to legal issues, but I understand how that might still feel pretty overbearing.
See my 12:29pm 🙂
Dude wipes in mint scent works great for you butthole are even cleaning your computer key board..
Non sequitur of the year, Kat…
lmao. I shouldn’t have woken up this morning.
I’ll bet you’re not going in for an emergency root canal this afternoon.
They don’t come in cloth, though.
Checking Harrison game logs 2024 is trip. Giants have gone 11-5 in games he’s started, including winning 8 in a row btw April and May, before Phils pounded him. He’s already beaten Rox twice (overall 5-4), once at Coors May 7 in one of his best outings all year–shutting them out through 7 on only 4 hits. Beat them again May 18 allowing 3 runs in 5 on day Giants won 14-4.
I had two fish tacos today. They were very good.
Javy used the phrase “making memories.” That phrase irks me.
It turns out that, for this year, the winner of the WNBA 3 point contest will get $55,000. Maybe that’s why Clark and Ionescu didn’t do it. They gave other players a chance. The average WNBA salary is $100,000. Clark and Ionescu make millions on endorsements.
As Flemming said, it’s now “a one-uh runna game-uh.”
Conforto with the big backwards K.
Can’t stand Flemming always babbling on about plays out of his control, pitches not going Giants way, the play at 1st with Wisely’s ball that hit the bag then the ump ( well maybe he should of been in foul territory wtf? they start in fair territory and that ball was smoked)for an out get over your well it shouldn’t of happened that way approach! It’s freaking baseball shit happens all the time.Wipe your ass with a Dude Wipe and then use it on your lips..
And Ballgame thank Tyler for sucking ass!!
Sell Sell Sell
I know, I know.
Nothing to see there, his stats are TERRIFIC !
As per usual, the umps suck. Ump cost Rogers strike three, then he gave up the HR. AAA has a perfectly fine pitch challenge system.
Did the ump allow the typical doink deflected bullshit infield hit, or the double, before the jack ?
BoMel must think he needs to bring in Jackson to make sure the game is lost. That guy is trash. Can BoMel not spell DFA?
Jackson is not a major league pitcher.
BTW, you’re not going to win games in Denver by scoring 3 runs. Another bases loaded left loaded. They need to win the next two to stop sinking below the waves, and hitting the sell button.
Now they need to go 39-25 to get to 86Ws.
Fat chance.
Nor is Rogers.
That’s not true. He has been outstanding this season, as well as previous seasons with the Giants. Last 5 games, he hasn’t been scored upon. However, as AK indicated “. . . he sucked ass” tonight.
This was an extremely disheartening loss in many ways…
I could see Mr. Ed going back to the Mets in a “feel good” trade along with a reliever. Maybe failed phenom Brett Baty would benefit from a change of scenery…
I’m in Syracuse area this weekend, we saw Baty at Mets AAA game last night, had a couple walks, a caught looking K and tagged one ro deep CF that was caught. Also saw Darren Baker for the Rochester Red Wings.
