K Avalanche
San Diego trip in the books, now off the Black Butte then Portland. Saw Birddog k’d 12 in 6 innings. Impressive. What’s not impressive is needing that to stave off getting swept by the shitty Rockies.

What does it matter if guys like Ray and maybe Cobb come back to bolster the staff when the batters other than Fitz can barely eke out runs? 11 runs in 4 games since the break, and three of those games were at Coors. Chapman last night swung like a guy who could use the AS break instead of someone who should be refreshed coming off it. This team is so maddening, I can’t remember a more frustrating season.
2008 springs to mind where we were hitting well but couldn’t drive in runs to save our lives. We had the pitching as well.
Chapman and Soler have provided little to nothing to the offense. Hard to fathom the falloff.
Both of these dudes were signed fairly late in Spring, and Snell was signed essentially with ST over. The lateness is a tell that most teams weren’t super interested in these guys. Must have been a reason that Farhan didn’t see. Soler in leadoff is just a complete joke, IMO. It’s not cute anymore, if it ever was. Put him in the middle of the LU somewhere and maybe he can find something…
Well, a lot of that is on Boras holding them out. Soler should be batting 6-7. Wisely or fucking Fitzpatrick is a better idea. At least Fitz has speed.
So with you MacDog this team is so hard to watch, u know their in shutdown mode late if their down a run cause they can’t score with the games on the line. And now they take away my only feel good story in Hayden Birdsong cause he’s too good, too strong,(can actually get u 6 innings and 95-100 pitches but oh wait he has many options, so we got the old stiffs coming back to pitch 3 innings tops getting their sea legs back, when this team has players that shouldn’t even have options to play anymore!
What other team would send Birdsong down with what’s he shown?Imagine the Pirates sending down Paul Skenes?Pirates fans would revolt.
Birdsong will be back with the team in 4 days. For the double-header. He won’t go anywhere after that. I hope.
Ray is pitching vs the Doges tomorrow, and Cobb pitched 5 innings yesterday in Sacto and gave up 0 runs, 2 hits, a walk and 4 k’s. 60 pitches. He looks to be back soon.
This is what Farhan hs been holding his breath for all fucking season, so we will see.
My hope is Hicks goes to the pen, Winn gets demoted, and we have Webb, Harry, Ray Cobb, and Birdland.
If Harry struggles, Winn can take his spot.
You can have a starter staff of 2 Koufax and 3 Marichals, but if this linguini offense can’t score, it won’t matter…
He has to go back down and serve rest of 15 days mandatory before he can return.
The Giants can sign a 27th player for the double header on Saturday without any other restrictions.
If it isn’t Birdie, I’ll quit this team.
I meant after he starts one of DH games. Then he has to go back down unc. In mean time they wanted to add new guy Bauman to pen.
Offensive Struggles: The Giants’ offense is totally inconsistent. Key players have underperformed, leading to a lack of power and overall production. Starting Pitching Issues: The starting rotation has been plagued by injuries and inconsistency. This has put pressure on the bullpen. Bullpen Underperformance: Sure, some bright spots, but the bullpen as a whole has struggled to consistently deliver late-inning saves. Team Chemistry: These guys play like total strangers. Zero chemistry and cohesion. Reminds me of a “beer league” team.
AK is absolutely right with regard to Birdsong. WTF is he doing in Sac??? Unca is correct about the $18 million dollars we squandered on a “defense only” 3rd baseman. Also, he’s spot on about Soler and his $42 million contract. Mac summed it up with his comment about the team being “maddening” and it being a “frustrating season.”
And screw Melvin for continuing to bat Soler leadoff cause he says I like it there? Wtf Melvin “Man up you Pussy”he can’t hit no matter where you put him( 6-7 at best) but a .220 hitter With tons of K’s and a .302 OBP should not be leading off. It’s a platoon of Wade&Fitzgerald 1-2 nobody else..
Yeah I know Birdsong is suppose to pitch the second game of the doubleheader Chuck, but does that not mean he won’t get booted down the next day since the Giants feel they have a slew of more talented starters lol in their old school philosophy that a player like Birdsong they can compute with like when Spock’s brain was removed the enterprise was spiraling out of control..
You telling me they are going to shut down Birdsong for the rest of the year? Or give him 2-3 more starts? Even in AAA?
That is flat ludicrous.
Remember this is also about limiting innings for Birds. They aren’t going to run him out there every 5 days for rest of the season and bump up innings way over last year. He pitched 100 last year total and is already over 80–if they gave him 12 more starts that could mean he winds up with 140-150.
They might have to do same thing with Harrison. Baggs has talked about innings limit for him since season started. These are young arms they don’t want to burn out.
Birdie pitching 125 innings won’t make his arm fall off. If it comes down to the end of the year and they want to shut him down them, I guess they do it then. Still, these artificial limitations are bullshit. Mainly because pitchers get hurt whether they are coddled or not.
There’s a medium between 350 innings of yesteryear and 150 now.
Limitations are real, like them or not, with idea to protect young arms. The guy on mound for Dogs last night had worked 24 innings in 8 starts in minors.
125 innings for Birds would still be significant increase…if it’s determined Giants aren’t going anywhere, why bother? Especially with vet guys like Snell Ray and Cobb who haven’t hardly pitched at all available as SPs.
they aren’t; real.
Ramos has to fight his way out of things too; less disciplined at plate vs. high fastball and chasing away. 2-16 post AS break on road trip, 3-24 since 2 hit game vs. Twins at home.
Randy Heliot…
Winn had a setback so it looks even more likely we get Birdie back by the weekend.
And, just saw, they sent Birdsong to San Jose, not Sacto. So yeah, he’ll be back.
For Saturday only, as roster extra allowed for DH.
Much as I like Wisely, he hasn’t had good July. 11-50 3 doubles 1 triple 0 HRs. 2 BBs 14 Ks OPS .584. Kids have to hit to stay in lineup. OB is down to .305 and he’s not power guy that hits ball hard a lot.
Meanwhile Luciano heating up at Sac. per MCC site Brady Klopfer: July 2-21 17-49 5 HRs 9 BBs 11 Ks. He’s cut Ks way down from when he struck out 26 times in 60 ABs June 11-July 1.
I sort of chuckled at this Willie (although, I get your drift):
“Kids have to hit to stay in lineup.”***
*** What are our veterans excuses?
Track record as ML hitter I’d say as to why they get more rope, vs. Coast League being pretty extreme hitters league where lot of guys look good. Estrada in each of last 2 seasons hit 14 HRs and OPS above league average .720-.730. Also stole 20+ bags both years. No idea why he’s been so bad this year.
Flores too. He had great year last year 23 HRs 22 doubles .500 slugging .863 OPS. Just hasn’t been able to get going this season, probably last here.
The vets have to stay in the lineup because they’re pulling down big coin. IDK why I hear on sportstalk these yahoo hosts talking like Conforto is a player, and that the Giants are grinding on whether to trade him. The guy is not a good player. He’s OK. His hitting is on/off, his career is full of injuries, and he’s a below average glove. If your team is chewing fingernails whether to trade a guy like Conforto at the deadline, your team is not good…
Good SI explanation of the Birdsong move
https://www.si.com/mlb/giants/why-did-san-francisco-giants-option-rookie-pitcher-after-stellar-performance-sean9
Fun facts: June 28 game Landon Knack started here in SF, Matos homered off him, last time he hit one.
And in 9th, after Doval had blown save, Wisely homered off Treinen for walk off, also his last HR.
I have zero problem moving not only these 3, but the other 2 stiffs mentioned . . .
https://aroundthefoghorn.com/posts/3-players-the-sf-giants-should-consider-moving-at-the-2024-trade-deadline-01j3banf3mqa
blade, I would have no trouble trading those three. And, see my note above on Conforto. A few years from now, nobody will remember without prompting that he was even on the team. Like I said on the prior thread, to me only Bailey is untouchable on this awful roster. Good catchers are very hard to find and keep.
foghorn is one those sites that rarely make much sense, as with this one. Wade Jr. is one of better hitters they have…only real problem is that with soler around he can’t DH much which would give him time off troublesome legs. Villar might be able to play 1b and I’d like to see him get a shot.
Brisbee in TA said he’d trade Thairo right now, demote Matos now (love to see Encarnacion up) and play Luciano at 2b and talk extension with Snell. Also says more work for Taylor Rogers and maybe Bivens, less for Walker and Tyler Rogers. Says SF should limit Hicks role to helping out as piggyback starter to others like Ray Cobb Birdsong like they would behind an opener. Interesting takes all.
You didn’t even read his reasons on trading Wade. They made a lot of sense. Instead, you defend just about everything and everyone on this POS team, trying to be the “voice of reason.” I don’t get it Willie? Why? This Zaidi team is worse versus the team he initially took over in 2018.
Yes I did. He admits prospect haul for Wade Jr. would be modest, and replacing him difficult. Wade jr. is hitting .311 with OB of .433. He’d be 3rd NL for BA, and would lead league by far in OB, and doesn’t make much money. Why would anyone want to make team less talented offensively because they are worried about 2026? The guy can hit, for team that struggles to do so. Team next year needs him on it.
There is no way 2018 that lost 90 games, let alone 2019, better than current group. Belt and BC are thankfully gone as is Joe Panik. So is Pence Gorkys Hernandez and Cutch. that team finished 14th NL for runs and most slash lines. Current team is middle of pack, even given offense nowadays is down to 1968 levels, and much younger. Chapman over Longoria every day and Wade Jr. is fine enough hitter at 1b. Fitz Wisely Ramos Lee for 2025, and Bailey. Lot to build around.
Lot of promise to pitching staff, particularly younger guys. Just say no to tanking.
2018 team had Melancon Strickland Blach DRod Suarez Cory Gearrin Dereck Holland Smardz Okert, yuck. No comp to now and no one on that group had any potential at all.
The problem is, trading Wade is a lose-lose situation. We prolly couldn’t replace his bat, but he’ll be gone anyway in a year.
Supposedly a real seller’s market with so many teams in contention for watered down playoffs. Giants should take advantage of that any way they can…
Right, Blade. Farhan got a re-do after 4 years of suck and an outlier year. They are not much better than they were when Sabevans left. For the 100th time, how do you build a team with all these opt-out deals?
Everyone worth a plug nickel has left to greener pastures.
There is no personality to this team. If there is, somebody tell me what it is. They have no speed, little pop, crap defense, run bases like headless chickens. Not one attribute that is top drawer. Like Oakland, no there “there”. Just a bunch of dudes cobbled together, both young and vets. I heard some analyst the other day on KNBR, can’t remember his name, that said he can’t understand why the Giants, in a park built big like Oracle, have never tried to develop a team with a lot of speed to capitalize on the dimensions. A good question…
Couldn’t have said it better.
I don’t disagree, but I don’t think anybody since the 80’s Cardinals (?) has tried it that way. And Giants did win 3 of 5 mostly with pitching…
the context of vast middle of NL WC teams is based on mediocrity of everyone not named Braves. the Padres are 2 games over .500. D Bax 1 over, Mets 3 over, Cards 4. None of them are running away with anything.
There are 8-9 teams in this middle ground including Giants. anyone that goes on winning (or losing) streak can change position in heartbeat, for better or worse.
A couple points Willie . . .
2018 team was 50-48 at half-way point
2018 team lost 89 games (not 90 as you said)
2018 team was 5 games over .500 at their best that season.
2018 team disappointment and replacement of Sabes, etc., due to expectation that we still had the pieces for another World Series run, as was the expectation in 2017, 2016, and 2015.
Joe Blow off the street can look at that 2018 team and recognize 90% of the players. Conversely, Joe Blow looks at this team and recognizes a few folks on the roster. Moreover, most of those players accomplished something I doubt any of these players will – a World Series championship. That’s why folks are POed at Zaidi and his stupid machinations of roster fillers and 2 year contract wonders.
That 2018 team sucked as did 2019; what Craw did in 2014 is irrelevant to today. Both finished 14th NL for runs scored and for all 3 slash lines. Not one guy on either of those teams beside Posey is missed. Giants are in better place without Sabe/Evans. But if you like 2018, hey more power to you.
I didn’t say that. Go read my original comment . . . In 6 years, Zaidi has made little or no progress, i.e., that’s my point. In fact, he has regressed (1 good year a few years ago and has done jack since).
I don’t think Derek Hill is going to be this year’s Cody Ross.
Lol Loco..The Giants idea of buying is constantly dumping diving.Derek Hill latest scrub as they will probably send down Matos.Yeah I get Matos has been sucking donkey dick, but Hill hasn’t done shit either when in the bigs. Will Ramos now wear a bilingual speaker piece in his ear when the Americano outfielders are out there now? Has any GM in the history of the game done more shit dumping dives move then Farhan??
Why the hell is Hicks still starting?
Fitz on fire.
Wow, hot Fitz!
5 straight games 5 straight bombs! Maybe other Giants hitter should rub his head, anything to wake up the rest of these pathetic bats..
Soler swings and misses at a too high pitch (totally set up by Knack for the following SO pitch).
Count leverage to K. Thy name is Soler. And the usual weak fly to end the threat.
Over and over and over.
this is like going to the dentist every day.
Hey but Melvin is to scared to do anything with Pedro Soler Cerrado. He like’s leading off and striking out right away.Melvin:No need to change he gets an occasional walk? Ok? For every walk there’s 3 K’s and who give a shit if he walks every 20 and’s are more ,he’s just another station to station dude..
anyone but soler lead off. Christ. I’m starting to miss Mr. Kotter.
last years team was garbage compared to this one. And MoTel 6 is getting nothing from it.
only a foot high there chappie
my autocorrect is spot on. It wants to change chappie to crappie.
He’s our future . . . watch it.
lol!
I know Fitz is 6’1″, but he looks like he doesn’t weigh more than 175-180lbs (versus his listed 205).
Fuck
so no Kruk, the k of Kiki wasn’t a big deal.
ballgame. Trade them all but fits webby Matos and Bailey.
fire Farhan. Hire Ng. This team is as exciting as a bag of mulch.
hicks has been ineffective for 6 weeks now but yeah, keep him out there. Solar is doing nothing leadoff. Keep him there. Jackson is a rolling disaster out of the pen. Keep him in the pen.
Soler must have 50 hat tricks this season.
I wish Soler had a shock collar and I had the remote.
Yes!
Atleast they didn’t tease us for 8 innings before collapsing like last night’s no mas catch..Ballgame and we all know it cause this team can’t hit out of a paper bag..
Love me some more Soler’s pathetic AB’s Melvin sure does..
Please have Soler be the first to go.
Scorer is scoring that as a hit??? Sheesh . . . looked like an error to me.
Well, at least Downton Abbey didn’t disappoint today. The show is quite packed with storylines. I’m near the end of season 2.
Mary Crawley has a way better OPS than Soler…
Nice throw!
Followed by the clown show.
Did they move Ramos to catcher and Matos to 3rd? That gaffe was similar to last night..
Chapman 2 hits in last 6 games. Soler 3 hits in last 6 games.
Pfffttt!
I was busy cooking and eating a nice spaghetti sauce and pasta dinner with green beans washed down with a nice Ribera del Duero Tempranillo. Looks like I haven’t missed anything much different than last night’s mess. Giants on track to take 1 of these 4, at most, and become unequivocal Sellers. Back to some coffee ice cream dessert, while the Dodgers finish the execution. Night fellas…
Fitz can hit!
Very disappointing.
What one expects is never disappointing.
But know else can hit so who really gives a shit Zumie..
Last 7 games batting.198 ,2 runs a game, .171 RISP OBP .263 this team sucks!
Fitz and that’s it for the offense. When do the Olympics start?
