A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Caught In Our Own Webb

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on July 26, 2024

If the pitching staff is gonna take off and lead us to a wild card spot Logan Webb is gonna have to get his shit together. No chance without him being a big part of it. On to Portland today.

the guy that caught final out in Cease’s no hitter vs. Nats yesterday was…former Giant Bryce Johnson. iirc he started 2023 off with Giants and went like 1-20 before he was sent down., Wound up hitting .148, 7-43. He’s even worse with Padres this year, hitting .128 5-39 with 1 XBH. Mostly late game defensive replacement with Tatis Jr. still on shelf, but probably a trivia question highlight.

Do they still have those water fountains on the streets in Portland?

Rogers gives it up again, this time with 2 consecutive bombs. The one to Ahmed is just too comical for words. I know, Roger’s got great stats.

I think Farhan will make a move. Either one that is insignificant, or a big one or two that in the end will do nothing to improve the team. Quality minor league hitters is the obvious need. He should trade Snell for sure, because if Snell does what he usually does and pitches very well the last 2 months, he’s opting out next season for a team that has a real chance to win something. Ray will probably do the same thing in the offseason. He probably can’t be traded now for value with only one start behind him and his TJ arm, regardless that it was really good. Who wants to stay on a sinking ship if they have the chance to hit the lifeboats with sacks of cash?

I see a few Flappers agreed last night with my prior point about giving Webb a rest. Even Krukow agreed this morning on KNBR said he could use with a skipped start.

Good call. Let him miss a turn and/or use him for a tight relief stint situation.

Per Fangraphs, the Giants have an 11.1% chance of making the playoffs. Even James, our resident “AI statistician” (I say that in a complimentary way) alluded to the fact, that we do not have much of a chance to get in.

Shit, my own eyes tell me this just about each and every day they play a game. Anyone who says that we have an “untouchable” player(s) is smoking some good shit. I have no idea how Zaidi is going to play “his hand,” as it seems he only has a couple of deuces, waiting for the proverbial “river” card. Not looking good.

After watching Giants for four months and just four days before trade deadline, seven words come to mind: “Frozen Concentrated Orange Juice…SELL…SELL…SELL!”

Yes, Giants could make late season surge but currently 5.5 games out of wild card berth with eight teams in front of them. Must leapfrog six to snare playoff spot. Unlikely for uninspiring, unappealing and underwhelming team.

But who has trade cachet? Agree with others that Snell despite zero wins should bring back good value. Conforto, Yaz and Flores probably not but wouldn’t mind seeing any veteran offloaded to continue youth movement. Doval is interesting trade option. Clearly great stuff but control has always been issue. Shut down closers tough to find but Doval seems rung below shut down status.

Most disappointing is that Giants trending toward 75-79 win total for season. Non-competitive for sure but not embarrassingly ugly. In short, type of season ownership looks other way and Zaidi and Putila return for another offseason of 1 and 2 year, player opt out contracts and near misses on marquee free agents.

Damn appreciative of three World Series titles in five years compared to Dodgers and D-Backs one each since turn of century. But 2014 falling further back in rear view mirror with 8 out of 10 dismal seasons since.

  7. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on July 26, 2024 at 9:37 am

Yeah, what’s the point? They are going nowhere fast. Anyone good will leave. And we have basically wasted 6 years to treading in mud with Farhan. And they won’t get much for Rachel Ray and OTS as they are both on opt-outs after this season.

I’d keep Webb, Birdie, and Bailey. Trash the entire coaching staff, front office, and scouts. They need a complete overhaul.

Farhan and Co were supposed to be vast improvement over the previous bunch. I see little improvement.

I’d like to think they have a shot with Ray and Cobb coming back, and Dwight Hicks (and he sucks shit) going to the pen, and actioninthebullpen Jackson finally getting his walking papers, but someone has to tell the hitters that we are 3/4 of the way through the season and it’s time to wake up.

Let’s get real. Webb pitched exactly 1 inning btw. July 10 (when Jays lit him up for7 runs in 5 innings) and July 20 when he lost to Rox at Coors. He’s already had 10 days off–he needs another 10? BS.

First 2 times through order top 3 hitters Ohtani Freeman Teoscar H were 0-5 with BB. Bottom guys lit him up in 2nd. He walked Lux (yuck) then E Herandez (hitting .193) and Barnes singled. then in 4th Lux doubles as does Enrique and Barnes singled. Bottom 5 Pages singles and then 2 more line drive base hits from Lux and Enrique.

Bottom line this is btw Webb and Bailey to sort out. Zero to do with more days off. If he wants to be leader or ace he thinks he is, then get back out there and figure it out.

    • djloo27's avatar djloo27 said, on July 26, 2024 at 10:21 am

The thing is we don’t know if he’s trying to pitch through something that might be helped by more rest or if he’s just been crappy. We can only guess here without inside info…

      • willedav's avatar willedav said, on July 26, 2024 at 2:02 pm

Very true, but if he really is hurt and hiding it, then he has to own up and go on IL. Idiot Brian Wilson did this 2011-he admitted he’d blown himself out 2010, and then tried to pitch through it and missed 2012.

  10. willedav's avatar willedav said, on July 26, 2024 at 10:33 am

Whether it’s pitch mix, location, or grip on change up, now is NOT the time to go walkabout on your teammates with DH coming up Saturday, Hicks more than done as SP and Cobb saying he still needs another rehab start. Giants have day off Monday and another one Thursday. Face the music fight your way out of whatever slump you’re in and man up.

    • djloo27's avatar djloo27 said, on July 26, 2024 at 11:03 am

Webb has always been a battler. Pretty sure if he’s pulled, rested, ILed, or whatever it won’t be due to him asking out…

      • willedav's avatar willedav said, on July 26, 2024 at 2:20 pm

True. Sometimes Kruk is just FOS. I do think in some ways league has adjusted to what he is doing and Giants need to rethink approach or sequence. the dodgers guys have seen him for long time; the Jays, who haven’t, acted like they knew what was coming too.

How do Mariners trade for Arozarena, hitting up a storm, and 2 years more under contract, and give up almost nothing of consequence from their farm system — and Hill is the best Farhan can do from the scrap heap? Rays fans are pissed. If Farhan’s not buying, and given up, then fine. Bu, if he still thinks Giants have a shot, or even to improve for next season, WTF is he doing?…

Nice opening day events in Paris. Nations’ teams brought in on nice river barges on the Seine, the athletes wearing their dress uniforms, waving their hands and little flags of their nations, reminding people in the world every four years that we all share the planet with other nations. Kind of an illusion of world peace for a couple of weeks.

3 guys from St. Mary’s that played for Randy Bennett are on Australian team. I think I saw Patty Mills got 30 recently for them. also interesting that C Jock Landale spent time in Europe after brief stint here and adapted to playing more at high post.

NBA can be so boring at times. I kind of like how FIBA allows defensive 3 seconds; see how USA adapts to different environment. despite 3 line being closer, Steph did miss 6 of 7 in a game.

Bowden says Giants dangling Snell “because he could be best SP available at the deadline” if Skubal and Crochet won’t be traded and Cobb Yaz Conforto and Wilmet (currently on IL and who could be there awhile so…). Says “Astros, Twins and Red Sox make most the sense for landing spot, if he’s dealt.” Talked about potential deal with Cards for Snell, and said, “I think there has to be a significant player to be named later as part of any trade for Snell because it’s not known whether he’ll opt into his 2025 salary ($30 million) or elect to re-enter free agency.”

  20. willedav's avatar willedav said, on July 26, 2024 at 4:53 pm

Didn’t realize this: Bowden said a PTBNL has to be agreed upon within 6 months after a trade. Plus, “The PTBNL cannot be a player who is on the IL at the time of the trade and cannot have been on the 40 man roster during the previous season, thus making that player a minor league prospect, or suspect.”

Krukow got very worked up about cap-tipping tonight.

By the way, there’s probably zero chance Krukow will read Hampton Sides’ new book, “The Demon of Unrest,” about the attack on Fort Sumter that officially started the Civil War. A Union officer by the name of Abner Doubleday was stationed at Fort Sumter. The author Sides notes that Doubleday did not invent baseball, which is already common knowledge. A 30 second Google search would clarify that for Krukow but he can’t be bothered to take the 30 seconds.

I do admit, the name Abner Doubleday sounds like it should be the inventor of baseball.

Fun fact- the soldiers at Fort Sumter did play a version of baseball at the Fort, until eventually Confederate artillery started raining down exploding shells upon the Fort.

  49. willedav's avatar willedav said, on July 27, 2024 at 6:22 am

Giants (and other GMs) use guys like Hill and Bauman to avoid putting minor league players on 40 man they would otherwise have to protect from Rule 5 draft in offseason. Hill has been in Rangers system in same league as River Cats and done well (vs. struggling to hit ML pitching), so they’ve seen him. He gets tryout in Slater/Matos role as RH platoon player. If he can’t handle it they DFA him, hope he passes through waivers and they can send him down to Sac if he accepts. This was role Matos couldn’t handle; he gets to play everyday in Sac.

same with Bauman. They needed extra arm with DH coming up. Does Z overdo this? Yes. Still not bad idea, unless they want to bring guys like Roupp or Black back up. I’d like to see more of Bivens but haven’t kept up with what he’s been doing at Sac.

  50. willedav's avatar willedav said, on July 27, 2024 at 6:41 am

speaking of Matos role…Monday night vs. LA Melvin sent Matos up to PH for Conforto (vet in 9th season) in 6th inning when Dogs brought in LHP Vesia. He struck out then K’d again in 8th vs. RHP Treinen in game Giants lost 3-2. Matos was 3-33 at that point.

Conforto had been in another slump on road trip but that still surprised me. Maybe Melvin knew Matos was gonna be sent out and wanted to give him one more chance but didn’t work out.

Also to Conforto credit, I saw where he urged FO not to sell at deadline. Said everyone played for each other and it was good group capable of going on winning streak etc.

  51. willedav's avatar willedav said, on July 27, 2024 at 6:47 am

Even with W last night SF only 4-6 in last 10 after disaster of road trip. Bad timing, as Mets Padres Pirates and DBax are all 7-3 last 10. Mets have won 5 in a row and taken over top WC spot from Braves, who have lost 6 in a row and are now only pct point ahead of SD team on 6 game winning streak. so Padres have gone from .500 to 6 games over.

Missed much of the Giants, but saw enough to be ready to sell. On that note, listening to MLB radio on the way to grocery store. Olney said he has talked to 2 GM’s and there is almost no market for Snell. He might not be claimed if waived. Crazy. Said because of the contact no one wants to be stuck with the high dollar amount next year if he is still bad. A few good starts haven’t changed peoples minds yet. “If the Giants want to trade him they will have to write a check”. Not good.

First visit with 3 buddies, we had our car break down and the Bed and Breakfast propreitor told us to return to London on the train; come back to Edinburgh in a week and it would be repaired. The propreitor would NOT take our money for the repairs upon our return. I have other examples of this type of behavior from Scottish people, e.g., directions, etc. Great people.

The waitress’s question was very friendly! We did a month long drive around Great Britain, and took in the Midlands, Cumbria, Wales, and Cornwall, too. The soccer fans in Manchester really do start crowding the pubs by 11 AM. I’d been so partial to the usual southern Europe thing, but we were completely taken in and want to go back soon.

Last 3 days in London. We had a terrific meal in chinatown. Talking with the younger couple next too us. Invited my wife and i to join a group in a Soho pub. “See a local pub with our mates!” We did. Singing & dancing in a packed pub. 3 different people bought us drinks. Hugs all around a few hours later when we left. One guy works for Tottenham and made me give him my address so he could send me a jersey! What was going to be a drink lasted 2+ hours of great fun!

Glad you had a great time! Lived in Great Britain for 2 years while in the Air Force, coupled with playing in GB table tennis leagues (played the #2 ranked player at the time . . . yes, he kicked my ass). Consequently, I was able to visit many places in GB, along with Europe – London is a “good springboard” to the continent.

FYI – Ray has three years and $73 million remaining on his contract, though he can opt out after the 2024 season. How he acclimates to a new organization and performs once he returns will no doubt factor into whether he exercises that clause.

IOW, bye bye to Ray and Snell

    • willedav's avatar willedav said, on July 27, 2024 at 1:35 pm

Could be. On other hand, Ray has pretty good deal for 2 more years and turns 33 this October. How many teams will better that or extend him for more seasons? He’s pitched 5 innings this year. FA wasn’t kind to lot of guys looking for big deals this offseason.

      • willedav's avatar willedav said, on July 27, 2024 at 1:39 pm

If they leave they do. Giants save on payroll and CBT, and have Webb Hicks Harrison and Birdsong in rotation.

  56. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on July 27, 2024 at 2:00 pm

Snell looks like he’s coming into form. He’ll likely opt out in 2025 and sign another big deal. I would trade his ass, get some prospects, some hitters, outfielders. Punch up this sad-sack lower 1/3 to lower 1/4 rated farm system…

Marlins trade Chisholm to Yanks for 3 prospects. Kapler is Marlins Assistant GM

  58. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on July 27, 2024 at 2:44 pm

I bet Mr. Kotter is laughing his ass off at the state of the Giants under MoTel 6.

I think AJ Pollack may be available.

  60. blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on July 27, 2024 at 3:27 pm

Happy for Kapler that he bounced back as the the Marlins Assistant GM (no idea that this happened, so thanks Willie for the info). Yes Unca, I would imagine Gabe is laughing his ass off about the Giants and particularly, Zaidi’s situation.

If I could get into Kapler’s head and read what is on his mind regarding Zaidi, I would imagine he’s thinking,

“Stop being an asshole. There, now I’m your life coach.”

    or,

    “Home is wherever you’re not.”

I’m sure he has plenty enough on his plate. Team he works for let Kim Ng go and now they are selling off one of few bright spots in lineup they have. They’re 38-66, same as Rockies, team you called “worst in baseball.” Marlins going nowhere fast and are dead last NL for attendance.

      • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on July 27, 2024 at 4:17 pm

Same Ng that 6 years ago I said would be a good hire for SF. Instead, they hired you know who.

Don’t wish Kap any ill will, but that’s difficult task he has in front of him.

BoMel on pregame re: Snell’s first half:

    “It was a little spotty”…

  62. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on July 27, 2024 at 3:54 pm

As I predicted, Bauman DFA’d today after one short, 2/3 inning, 3 hit, 2 earned runs horrendous performance last night. Was that really worth all the machinations before a double dip? I submit it was not, it just looks stupid…

    • alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 said, on July 27, 2024 at 4:27 pm

Yeah more Farhan dumb pickups Snarkk .

Bauman atleast got to show how shitty he was unlike his other dumb move Pomeranz who never got in lol 😂 but still stole some cash to sit in the bullpen and do some rah rah..

And when is he going to dump his other recent non productive player Derek Hill?

  63. alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 said, on July 27, 2024 at 4:13 pm

Marlins are just a clueless organization the only time they started to look decent was when GM Kim Ng after some nice shrewd trades helped them get a playoff spot at 84-78 2 years ago then how stupid they were decided to restructure? And then strip her of her authority which she said stick it and left! I would love to have her replace Farhan and Melvin next year.

  64. blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on July 27, 2024 at 4:28 pm

Frustrating. Giants should have scored something after this dufus walked the 1st 2 batters. Pfffttt!

  65. willedav's avatar willedav said, on July 27, 2024 at 4:31 pm

Perfect example of what those “missing bats” columns James linked to talked about, pitch patterns focused on vertical more than inside-outside horizontal. Feltner got Bailey to swing at slider in dirt then high fastball and got Fitz on another slider below zone. sigh

  66. alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 said, on July 27, 2024 at 4:42 pm

Well Chapman’s bat didn’t miss that pitch!

    Bombs away!
Now Yaz with his 8th Triple unbelievable but will they get him in??

That would be NO as usual…

  67. blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on July 27, 2024 at 4:48 pm

    Snell’s dealing. 16 swings and misses (6 SOs). Yeah, they’re the Rockies, but still . . .

  70. zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on July 27, 2024 at 5:04 pm

Speaking of Krukow, he mentioned French Polynesia, which factors into Hampton Sides’ book about Captain Cook. European nations swallowing up other nations to build empires, which, of course, the US did, too.

Not certain he had 29 or 30 swing and misses. Regardless, that was the MOST this season for any pitcher.
