A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Oakland Takes Game 1

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on July 31, 2024

Shut down by JP Sears. The indignity of it all. I was on a plane and missed most of the game. What if we had Soler and he’d hit 4 solo home runs? lqtm. Well, another underwhelming day for Farhan at the deadline. The curtain has been pulled back and there’s nothing there. It’s so disappointing that a franchise with this type of history has been reduced to being run by a used car salesman.

As I predicted, at yesterday’s post deadline presser, Farhan said he didn’t get an offer overwhelming enough to trade Snell. He wasn’t willing to trade him for talent not available until 2026 or 2027. Who said that was all he should negotiate for? BF is right. This guy just can’t do it. And, he said they needed to go on a significant run to get into the race. Duh. That’s what he’s relying on? Now, they lose the first one to the magnificent A’s. The media reviews of Giants deadline moves are objectively bad and quizzical, and rightly so. Baggs just said on KNBR that Snell obviously will opt out and likely be elsewhere next season. Where is this organization headed, as it prepares to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the 2014 champ team? At least it’s good at celebrations and ceremonies…

Z made off-season moves that looked really good on paper. (I still read paper newspapers.)

I never use the word “luck,” because I don’t believe it’s a real thing, but Z had bad breaks with those off-season moves. But, of course, he’s ultimately the one who has to take the blame. I used to think that he’d get another season, but now it doesn’t seem sure.

Raise your hand if you knew there was a country called South Sudan, which recently got its independence from regular Sudan. And one of their rewards for independence? They get to play the US men’s basketball team in the Olympics.

Farhan has earned that LA bonus check for sure.

The thing is, when a team is close and the FO goes for it, it does seem to fire the players up. Size up what’s missing on the roster to make a run and do whatever you can to get that missing piece. People always bring up the Betran trade, I loved it, the FO was taking a shot at it. We missed that year but won the WS the next without Zack Wheeler. The teams that wave the white flag seem to go into a rebuilding loop that goes on for years and years.

Last season, and this season, if teams were asking for Harry or Birdy, I’m glad the Giants didn’t trade them.

    • Locojuan's avatar Locojuan said, on July 31, 2024 at 10:57 am

Kinda depends on what we would have gotten for one of them don’t ya think? If it was a package with Harry for Vlad Jr. are you saying no to that? I’d do it today.,

        Agreed.

Harrison is proving to be a 3-4 and nothing too special. I had Harry going yesterday for Vlad. Id do that deal in a second.

Stripling goes for the A’s tonight.

If the Giants don’t shell his ass, the Giants FO has nowhere to hide…

I mean, shit, AZ last year rebuilt their whole starting rotation at the deadline. And they got AJ Puk and Josh Bell yesterday. The Dodgers got 12 guys or some shit these past few days. SD got pitching help. Arozarena, Chisolm, Paeres etc could have helped us. Only lowlt Colorado shit the bed harder than us.

Even keeping Soler would have been a better move. Canha? Fuck me sideways.

Conforto? Fuck him. He coulda gone like Slater and no one would miss him. Teams needed pen help. We have a ton of guys to deal.

Like Gertrude said, there’s no there there when it comes to Farhan.

    • willedav's avatar willedav said, on July 31, 2024 at 10:59 am

Giants don’t have players to move for lineup help. No to trading young controllable pitching me Brisbee in TA said per Baseball America 0 prospects in Top 100 were moved at deadline. Josh Bell gets moved every deadline bc he sucks. Time for kids and SPs to show what they got.

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on July 31, 2024 at 11:01 am

I don’t understand keeping Conforto. Below average glove, streaky bat, adds nothing for the future. Maybe they could not have gotten a lot for him, but he’s worth a decent minor league prospect back. The only reason I can see is visuals — it would add to a look like the white flag went up on the season…

        salary relief, that it

      • willedav's avatar willedav said, on July 31, 2024 at 1:13 pm

There weren’t any decent prospects traded in top 100 for anyone during the entire deadline, let alone for underperforming rental like Conforto. Giants did add his platoon replacement, Canha, a RH ML vet who can also back up 1b and play LF or RF when Hill or Yaz aren’t in there. Giants can call up RH Encarnacion from Sac once they add him to 40 man.

  7. willedav's avatar willedav said, on July 31, 2024 at 12:22 pm

Our old friend Donny Barrels with walk off base hit to beat dogs last at Petco. Doesn’t help Giants any but anyone beating LA always good to see. Godson padres fan tells me Padres fans love him too.

KC has 3 guys over 70 RBI’s this year. We have 1 guy over 50 (Ramos at 53). Astounding.

Just a joke the BA media keeps giving Farhan and Melvin a pass!

Bobby Evans had the same amount of playoffs appearances as Farhan in less years even!

Year 6 and ONE playoff with 5 years under .500 records is pathetic.

The offense is what they needed to go after and yet again Z failed to address the problem as Dogpile&Padres made solid trades, while Z sat on his ass just saying are pitching will keep us in it..We’ll where the offense going to come from? Cause the pitchers will continue to get “ Cained”

Then clueless Melvin besides letting Ray get extra hammered in only his second start back decides to extend his pitch count to try to get him thru 5?when he clearly was struggling and he gives up his 3rd HR blast to Rooker along with PH for Luciano after he doubled his previous AB I’m sure goes along way building up his confidence!Pollock last year deadline,Canhi( sp) this year along with a Giant who was not even on the roster Derek Hill to start the year is the best they can do? Fuck salary relief this organization is loaded but I guess it is Greggy and PÓS Baer need to break even mentality instead of winning baseball will always come first…

I can’t listen to much of him anymore.

It’s just blah blah blah. Like the school teacher in the old Charley Brown cartoon specials. He and Larry Baer make a good pair, lots of words, nothing much of substance. He talks about the team’s results like somebody else is the GM. I was totally down with this guy the first 3-4 years, but I was wrong. The organization is adrift now…

The clock has run on Farhan. His system that he is entrenched with based on a Moneyball mindset that won nothing in Oakland won nothing in SmelLA that I had grown tired off couple seasons ago has run its course. I don’t know if AJ Preller is the solution but would be the right start…any others that would make sense???

    • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on July 31, 2024 at 4:23 pm

I like Kim Ng. See AK . . . both of us have wanted her since Giants were searching for GM 6 years ago, although I was totally fine with Zaidi for 4.5 years, until last season, particularly his “stab in the back” move against Kapler. I can’t find my posts from way back then, but I strongly recommended her here on the Flap.

    • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on July 31, 2024 at 4:44 pm

The ‘mindset’ is coming from Greggie and Co above him.

The directive is to flail around with these short-term deals to make it look like they are really trying while only paying lip service in the end to trying to win even a Goddamn wild card spot.

Every year we hear how aggressive Farhan will be in the offseason/deadline and how he will do more to improve the team.

ALL our new guys are on opt-outs. All except for Soler. Oooops! Traded! Can’t have THAT deal on the books. Let’s get an older slower guy to replace him!

      • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on July 31, 2024 at 4:59 pm

Exactly Unca. Read that article I posted yesterday from 2023. Johnson Jr. is running the show and pulling the puppet strings of Zaidi. You’ve said as much all season, e.g., Johnson being fine with a .500 type performance.
