Skating By With A Win
Nice to see Webb get back on the beam but it was beyond infuriating to see our bats score a total of 3 runs in 2 games against this shit team. I think there is absolutely something mental going on. Like, our ownership and GM don’t give a shit so why should we? This team knows they’re stuck in boring loser land and they seem fine with it. Just collect those checks and the gaggle of opt outers can do their thing this Winter. And here’s the other thing, if none of them care why should we?
Just read Dodgers had first losing month (11-13 July) in 6 years. Padres (9-1 last 10) within 4.5 of them.
Not a surprise in my opinion, as they had a lot of key injuries (Betts, Muncy, Kershaw, Taylor, Rojas, etc.). However, unlike the Giants, they responded to the immediacy of their issues, as most, if not all analysts – think they improved themselves more than any other team in the MLB, e.g., a front line starting pitcher in Flaherty.
Same blueprint from the Padres, where they added a “gaggle of good relievers” to their team. Preller also doesn’t fuck around like Zaidi (see his mid-season acquisitions of Hader and Soto 2 seasons ago).
why Inlike Preller and his aggressive mindset. He is the anti-Farhan.
Giants offense mostly consists of young players who will have to navigate ML level pitching especially for off speed stuff like curves sliders and change ups. Webb dominated with change last night. We’re talking Ramos Luciano Wisely Fitz Schmitt Villar, plus Hill and Sabol is back too, right? It’s their time, good luck to them.
Giants home road splits have been awful: plus 10 at home 33-23, minus 12 away 21-33. Plus 18 run diff at home minus 34 on road. At Reds and Nats for 6.
Giants did finish winning month 13-12 July, plus 11 run diff, allowed fewest runs 89 in any month so far.
Just because there are teams playing worse that us doesn’t mean we have to be content with the product on the field. I actually think our players are doing the best they can.
Coming out of the Covid season and after the failure to sign big time free agent hitters, I argued we needed to transform our team into an old Cardinals like Team. Speed get on the bases move runners over steel bases manufacturer runs. That is what they should have been drafting to create. Sluggers in their prime just won’t sign with us leaving the Solers of the world to get overpaid just to come. I’m happy at least they cut that contract off the books.
i did not watch the last two games but the type of games hard to watch and get into. I would like to have that is entertaining to watch and not reliant on pursuing stats sluggers to bask the ball when we should be playing old style NL baseball. That has to be the team the Giants create. Farhan went his own Moneyball direction. We need a team that has at the top of the order players who can get on base and pressure the pitching.
But great news on the hostage release from Russia…
Well, these first 2 games, they sure looked disinterested. I’d be pissed too. It took a monumental effort by Webbie to beat the fuckin’ A’s.
Look at last year. 11 games over .500 and #1 WC at the break. The pen was gassed and sure they could use a bat. Their big deal is Pollack?
Crash and Burn. No playoffs. Farhan and Co blame Mr. Kotter.
No worries Flapper fans the savior of the season is on his way and I don’t mean Mark Canha..
SF Giants are activating prior to the Reds series OF/1B/DH Jerar Encarnacion 6’4 250 lbs ( RH bigger version of Soler)from Sac and before that the Burrito 🌯 League in Mexico 🇲🇽 19 HR’s in Mexico in 109 AB’s another 10 at Sac in 150 +AB’s.Granted both places are hitting friendly places, but wtf this team could use all the power it can muster.
I like that their trying this experiment at Reds ballpark that’s a band park so good chance baseballs will be flying out hopefully Jerar participates in that. He’s been playing a lot of 1B lately so that will probably be his spot with Wade left side and Farewell Mr.ED on IR..
Yeah saw this, very cool. Looks like more tinkering with roster before first game of road trip starts tomorrow.
canha actually wants to be here. Who could forget his “this is my house!” Chat around the bases a few years ago. Soler hated it here.
maybe this was announced on the game and I missed it but that sac fly we had for our lone run last night was the first sac fly for the Giants in 26 days. How is that even possible?
Missed Tuesday thankfully, but Kruk did mention all those games with runner on 3b with less than 2 outs when Giants failed to score.
Watching women’s badminton before USA basketball. Intense sport, lobs and smashes. HS kid who helped me coach this year plays for his school team, never seen it before.
Here’s how you know Soler hated it here: We have to assume that Farhan doesn’t really think that Canha is better than Soler (although I think he’ll surprise a few folks around here when he starts playing). And we traded him for squat. Salary relief. Why not just keep Soler for the rest of the season? There’s no downside to it especially since he had heated up a little bit. Either his agent or Soler himself said “get me the fuck out of here.” Nothing else explains that trade and then the subsequent replacement with Canha.
Added benefit of Canha is that he can play OF (and even 1b though it sounds like new guy will do that), while Soler never got one minute there this season. What you say makes sense and ATL likely was his preferred destination. Doubt Soler would have gotten better deal anywhere else in off season, just didn’t work out.
The owners cheaping the fuck out is highly probable. They didn’t want to pay his 3 years.
$$ better spent elsewhere. I didn’t want to watch 2 more years of Soler at all. Those first 2 months everyone hated the guy no matter where he batted in lineup. Without him as full time DH (which I also don’t like) gives chance for Melvin to rotate different guys in and out of there and get them some ABs.
Well they didn’t sign Soler to be a leadoff hitter he adamantly wanted to do.
They expected him to hit 4-5 knock in runs and hit bombs.Melvin gave in to him which was a mistake letting him dictate that situation.Plenty of leadoff candidates,Wade,Fitz,Wisely,Yaz etc.Like most Giants very inconsistent in the clutch with tons of K’s he became unwatchable for the first 2 months plus till he finally started to take better pitches then all the shit he couldn’t do earlier. One Dimensional player as well, couldn’t use him in the outfield,Lol good luck Atlanta playing him in the OF cause he sucks ,a major liability..
he’s leading off today for the Braves. It’ll be interesting to see how this works out
Yesterday, (first game with Braves), Soler was 0-3, BB, K.
he was batting lead off.
Well, it sure doesn’t make US any better.
It makes us worse. I’m sure the players were thrilled to learn that the FO’s big playoff push was to dump salary and fatten their wallets.
I thought Crawfish last year said something about the abject stupidity of the front office’s lack of moves at the deadline.
Did he complain about the abject stupidity of his last contract?
No, but it goes to show that the players were pissed that the FO did nothing at the deadline to make the team better.
I’m sure the same goes for this year. You can talk all you want about the ‘best rotation in baseball’ but to do nothing is a fucking joke.
Who gives an F about what Crawford says? The guy who was supposedly butt hurt Giants didn’t offer him anything in offseason after he was obviously completely done last year.
Talk about abject stupidity–how is trying to play 2024 working out for him with Cards?
Wow. The team does nothing and craters. The players get pissed when the front office does nothing to improve their chances.
So teams shouldn’t really try to get better?
The braves are batting him leadoff. I’m sure his numbers will be fine in hotlanta.
Most analysts have graded the Giants poorly on the moves they made, either confused about whether they were trying to be “sellers” or “buyers.” I have no idea what Zaidi was trying to accomplish. Consequently, as I alluded to yesterday, I am thinking Zaidi is on a “short leash” by Greg Johnson, basically having to run everything by him for approval. Moreover, I just think Zaidi “over thinks” every thing and as Flav, AK, Snarkk, Unca, etc., have suggested, this is not his forte . . . Zaidi is more adept at scouring the waiver wire for “has been” or “never was” players, along with seeing potential in minor leaguers that others don’t. Regardless, when the pressure is on, he seems to shrink. I will give him credit for the trades he made during the off season, as you can not control injuries, e.g., Lee, Snell, etc. What I don’t like are those 2-3 year opt out deals.
I mean take a look at the Pirates for example, whom are operating on a shoestring budget. That hasn’t stopped them from making 7 trades at the deadline (grades are fairly positive from all analysts). You don’t necessarily need a lot of money to make deals. More important, the Giants shouldn’t even have to think about money, as they are making it hand over fist. Here’s an example of grades for the Pirates:
https://pittsburghbaseballnow.com/pittsburgh-pirates-trade-deadline-grades/
I mention the Pirates because they are next in line regarding the Wild Card chase, sitting at 55-53 (.509 win %) and 2 games up on the Gmen.
I just don’;’t remember Farhan being this timid with the fuckin A’s or Dodgers.
Maybe that proves Blades point about the short leash Zaidi is on by Johnson.
Could be.,
Even though I detest them, we need to be the Padres. We have only 2-4 prospects that seem to be legit hope to be MLB level players. How many in baseball top 100? Padres trade prospects every year and never seem to run out. That is the separator between the 2 clubs now. They spend money (we are 10th, they are 14th), but do it better. Side note: How is that possible with this team we are 10th?
I was very excited to get Farhan, but 6 years is enough to evaluate, and our system, our development lacking, and ability to make quality trades is bad. Not the worst, but just bad.
Top 100 MLB prospects? 1 Luciano. He makes a separate list for those that have fallen the most (35 spots) from last year. We have a 2nd, but it is Birdsong.
Our top 6 have Luciano and Birdsong. The 4 others are all A ball or rookie ball. How is that possible? 7-10 have Crawford and mason Black. The others in rookie ball too. Our development sucks:(
Time for Farhan to go
Similar to what mrsprtdude said, I despise and hate the Bums, particularly after Kershaw got rocked by the Padres, but even in defeat, their catcher arrogantly and probably accurately said this:
“We’ll come out of it,” catcher Will Smith said. “No doubt about it. We’re the Dodgers. We’re the best team in baseball.”
Tell me the last time a Giant said something like this? You probably have to go back to Madison Bumgarner, Buster Posey, Will Clark, Barry Bonds and Willie Mays to pin point this type of confidence. It pisses me off no end that our team has no obvious leader. How can you have a leader when you have “opt out” contracts of 2 or 3 years duration? Please, anyone point to that type of leader on this team???
that’s a good point about no leaders. I guess a home grown guy like Bailey could turn into one but you aren’t gonna get that out of the 2 year opt out guys. Conforto? He’s a ghost. Same with Soler.
Jackson allows run in 7th on his second pitch for Atlanta.
He allows one run he gets himself a set of chains. He allows another run he gets himself two sets…
Soler with pretty much same line as night: 0-3, BB, but 2Ks tonight (only 1K last nite).
so far, so good!
Braves first inning: Soler leads off and strikes out. Next 3: HR single HR. Braves lead 3-0, win 4-2. This guy unfortunately turned into platoon hitter–.221 with .693 OPS vs. RHP, .277 with .893 vs. LHP. He hit .206 when Giants lost, driving in 17 runs in 45 games over 160 ABs. When it mattered with RISP, he sucked. Will not be missed; Giants can platoon anybody at DH for helluva lot less $$ and likely get better production.
Watching him continually chase down and away sliders out of zone just maddening. I can understand that from kids like Matos or Schmitt, but to watch a guy who has been playing for 10 years do it over and over again was mind boggling. What was he going to do with that pitch even if he did hit it?
