A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Put Up Or Shut Up Time

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on August 2, 2024

Ok, I am still in on this season. LOL. Don’t ask me why. But the next 10 games are completely winnable. I know 7 of them are on the road, but the Reds, the Nats and the Tigers are very beatable. And according to Farhan we have the best starting pitching staff in the league (insert eye roll here). I don’t know, go 8-2 or better and we still got a shot at possibly having something to root for in September. It starts tonight with Snell.

Baggs says with Canha and call up Encarnacion now on board, Sabol Villar and Hill are not, with Hill likely to be DFA’d. Wonder if he passes through waivers and Giants can keep him in Sac.

  2. willedav's avatar willedav said, on August 2, 2024 at 8:01 am

Also says, “…his (Encarnacion) presence could mean that 22 year old rookie Marco Luciano gets more starts in the middle IF and fewer at DH.” Melvin said something about Luciano getting time at SS.

Yay! The Mexican beer league guy will save us!! One of our strong offseason moves.

Villar and Hill aren’t major leaguers yet here they are and there they go.

They better have a team ERA of 1.20 to get anywhere these next 10 games.

Willie, you really don’t think players don’t notice when the front office sits on their hands and doesn’t improve the team at the deadline?

    • willedav's avatar willedav said, on August 2, 2024 at 8:48 am

did you hear what Chapman said? He felt best ball is ahead of them, especially given how intact pitching is. None of us from couch have any clue about what goes on in clubhouse. Losing Soler and Jackson is addition by subtraction imo. And Canha is solid vet to cover for Flores.

Btw, check out Brisbee today in TA. good column

It is beyond me to figure out how team could have been improved, or how giants could have been “buyers” without mortgaging future and selling off young controllable pitching I am loathe for them to do. Especially Harrison, as close to untouchable as anyone. Best position player moved at deadline was probably 3b I Paredes, from Rays to Cubs, and someone who would have been useless to Giants. Amed Rosario? yawn

      • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on August 2, 2024 at 10:19 am

Paeres, Chisolm, or Bell all could have helped. And they have plenty of mid-level guys they could have traded. Fuck, I’d have traded Dirty Harry. Along with Taylor Rogers, Conforto, Doval, or even Tyler Rogers and a couple mid-level guys for a hitter.

The Pirates got De la Cruz. The PIRATES. THEY made moves that made sense.

It is baffling how the Giants get away with shit like this year after year.

If this was NY, the reporters would be ripping them 14 new assholes.

      • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on August 2, 2024 at 11:01 am

Willie, yes none of us have any clue personally about the clubhouse, or what bullshit or great offers Farhan got for trading Snell. But, we can observe the games, players and read media reports on such goings on. If inside knowledge of Giants management were the gatekeeper to us blogging our bullshit here on the Flap, we wouldn’t have been doing it here the last decade+…

      • willedav's avatar willedav said, on August 2, 2024 at 12:59 pm

The pirates got IKF who would have blocked any young guys in middle IF and a 27 year old OF with below average stats over 4 years who does have some power in De La Cruz. Canha is better more versatile player. Neither of these guys would have moved needle on helping Giants lol.

      • willedav's avatar willedav said, on August 2, 2024 at 1:02 pm

Snarkk, I haven’t seen anything from anyone in local media to back up idea Giants players are bummed about deadline moves, or lack of same. That’s all I’m saying. We’re all just guessing here.

      • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on August 2, 2024 at 5:04 pm

Come on. The Dodgers made 7 moves. The Pads get a couple relievers.

The Giants see their home run threat get traded for dirt.

  4. alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 said, on August 2, 2024 at 8:34 am

Giants have a ton of roster moves they still need to make including Birdsong whom I assume will be added PERMANENTLY for whenever his that start is( mon-Tuesday?) then you have Hjelle( bereavement) and still Estrada &Flores to figure out..

Nice start for the kid they got in the Soler/Jackson trade.

Sabin Ceballos 19 year old 3B started yesterday at High A Portland Emeralds hit 2doubles and a 3 run HR to dead center

  5. willedav's avatar willedav said, on August 2, 2024 at 9:15 am

Funny thing about clubhouse too…Conforto prior to deadline said he hoped he wouldn’t be traded and that he liked it here.

end of last year Webb went public with his displeasure about focus etc.. Crawford in off season said he thought everything in clubhouse was fine.

  6. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on August 2, 2024 at 10:21 am

OF COURSE he likes it here. He can play in obscurity and not be held to ANY kind of standard.

Chappie loves it? I’m sure he’ll stay when Cleveland offers him 4/$100 or some shit and he leaves. Like all the other opt-out guys.

  7. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on August 2, 2024 at 11:06 am

How many teams in MLB are TAKING guys out of the Mexican league to fill out a MLB roster? Is that a thing?

I thought that’s where MLB has beens, cast offs. (Panda) or dudes with radioactivity (Trevor Bauer) GO to play out the string, or try to keep in shape for a rare call back to MLB. This latest move just tells me that Farhan is grasping at straws, and there is nothing in the minors to help this offense…

  8. blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on August 2, 2024 at 11:14 am

My “couch” is NOT the secret sauce to having an informed opinion about the Giants? Gotcha . . .

Add on to what Unca said about Conforto, as I DO have experience in moving (so does snarkk recently) . . . No one, absolutely no one likes to move, unless it is planned in advance and carefully thought out. More than likely it follows that Conforto doesn’t want to move either (unless he is living like a rookie in a studio apartment or living with a family). To the best of my knowledge, he didn’t sign one of these opt out deals either.

    • willedav's avatar willedav said, on August 2, 2024 at 12:10 pm

I’m fascinated by Bauer’s inability to land an MLB job. He’s weird. He’s likely a jerk. But the women he had the issue with went back to his house again after the 1st altercation so she is weird too. Courts say he did nothing wrong. Other players have hit wives out of anger (worse imo) and been given another chance. Michael Vick anyone? I’m not saying we should do it, but find it weird no one has.

    • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on August 2, 2024 at 11:39 am

Good points (damn, I didn’t know about that woman going back to him . . . not only stupid on her part, but doubly stupid on Bauer’s part).

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on August 2, 2024 at 1:16 pm

      Barry could have played more.

MLB owners blackballed him. By then, the steroids thing was bad PR, and Barry was their scapegoat. Seems same for Bauer, different reason. Anything to do with sex, especially kinky sex or alternative lifestyles is not good PR for MLB.

Gary Plummer gave some interview years ago about some kinky stuff as well as player escapades, and I think that’s why he got dropped from the Niner color announcer role. Unca likely knows details on that situation more than I …

Very true. I’m old enough to remember Bo Belinsky who threw no hitter in his 4th ML start, in career of 51-88 with 4.10 ERA (and 1.70 WHIP) per SABR. A’s Mike Warren threw no hitter at end of 1983, and 2 years later he was out of baseball.
