How Many Innings Do These Guys Have Left?
Harrison or Birddog? Who ya got? Harrison wastes way too many pitches cast off to the left and out of the zone. At least when I’m watching him.
One thing Farhan either hasn’t thought through or he’s being disingenuous about: He says he thinks we’ve got the best rotation in MLB right? That if we have a chance they have to carry us into the Wild Card spot. But he’s got 3 guys who are going to be facing a major innings wall at some point. Harry, Birdy and Hicks (who has already blown past his).
So if this fantasy comes to pass, who are our starting pitchers in late September and October and beyond?
I’ve seen speculation Giants use them together in a game, but other than that Idk how far Giants will extend them beyond last season totals. Harrison is already at 101, equal to how many he threw all last season, and fastball velo was down yesterday.
50 games left, 10 times through rotation.
Halos came back and beat Mets after Strick meltdown. they stay ahead of A’s who got whomped by Dogs 10-0 as Flaherty shut them down in 6 debut. Ohtani stole 2 bags in 6 run 9th (seriously?) for LA to get to 30-30 for season in his 111th game. Eric Davis is fastest to ever do that, in 105. Man what a player Eric Davis was.
“fastball velo…” at least on way to the plate.
“Ray making hay” today, or at least, I hope. Reds fanning at 28.9% rate versus lefties in the last month. But a big “but!” This is the 3rd straight southpaw they have faced, so they are getting better (see yesterday’s game). Ray sucked in his last start – three bombs to the A’s resulting in four runs in 4 1/3 innings. Coupled with walking five hitters in 9 1/3 innings. He’s also hit two batters and threw a pair of wild pitches.
GMen need to have all hands on deck today.
I’m laying my cards on Hayden Birdsong in the stretch run.I’m impressed in everything he throws. And even when he’s inconsistent on strikes he has an uncanny knack to battle back and e ether a K. I actually believe he’s better then Rodger Clemens at this age, probably Verlander as well
He needs to be out there every 5 days for sure he’s better then Harry already imo, but it’s still great to have young guys coming into their own in the rotation..
Fair column that criticizes and defends Zaidi’s approach; along with throwing “shade” on San Diego and Los Angeles, while also defending them for annually going for all the marbles.

AK, sounds like Birdsong and Harrison will be in the rotation for the rest of the season come hell or highwater per Zaidi.
https://aroundthefoghorn.com/posts/farhan-zaidi-outlines-plan-for-a-pair-of-young-sf-giants-pitchers-to-finish-the-season-in-the-rotation-01j4asw94afr
Harrison continues to not impress. He’s young, but showing he’s not as good as Birdie, essentially the same age. Harrison continues to get hammered by throwing up in the zone with hit- me breaking balls, and low 90s fastballs with no movement. Maybe the heat yesterday lowered his velo, but those 3 fastballs crushed for HRs were 90 mph creampuffs. So far, I think he’s proved to be less than the big hype, typical for the Giants. Maybe an offseason of fine-tuning his mechanics, as Kruk says, will help. I still dislike the weird, stand-up finish on his delivery, he needs to change that IMO to more of a follow through; I wonder how he got this far with that…
Soler last game with Giants 3-5 vs. Rox double and rbi.
So far with ATL, 1-14 with 6 Ks. Not missing 2 more years of this guy no matter how Giants leadoff or DH do. Playing OF too good luck with that.
One of pen guys Mets added blew save last night vs. Angels allowing 3 runs and HR after Martinez slam.
Also saw that DBax switched closers, dropping Sewald out of that role. He’s the guy they got in deadline trade with M’s last year.
Doval btw hasn’t pitched since Jul 28 vs. Rox. 5 innings 6 hits 4 runs 3 walks last 5 outings.
That doesn’t mean Soler would be sucking here. Say whatever you want about the fucking trade, but it didn’t help the team in any way shape or form. Other than the bottom line.
Like this is the trade that allows Farhan to keep Snell. lol
the trade actually did help them. He had to go so other guys on roster can play that spot and hit. All he can do is DH, wasting roster spot. He was brought here to add power and drive in runs, and he had flat awful stats for leaving rbi ducks on the pond. Honestly, across Giants blogosphere, it’s almost unanimous nobody misses Soler except you.
Who’s picking him up? Luciano? Canha?
Riiiight.

Roku game? Huh?
Ump forgot the count.
Fool.
Like it mattered tho. We are kings of the popup.
Giants are now trending in the 14th-17th place, middle of the pack, for many typical offensive stats. Still last in stolen bases. One thing that stands out is that SF has just one player in the top 100 players for hitting the ball hard (95 mph+). That is Chapman, ranked at 25. Dodgers have 4 in the top 100, Yanks 5, Phills 4, Pads 6. So, it seems something of a valid indicator of success.
OK, it’s a band box, but 6 HRs so far in two days against Farhan’s best rotation in baseball?
Fuck.
La de fricking da.
This yard would be perfect landing spot for Conforto who homered last night and now has double. None of Reds OFs have much power except for Steer with 15 HRs. Despite playing in bandbox Reds are 10th NL for slugging and 11th OPS. Elly hasn’t been on base enough yet to hurt Giants.
Well, the best staff in baseball can’t keep their weak hitters in the yard.
There are plenty of folks that think the Soler trade was bad, Willie.
https://www.si.com/mlb/giants/san-francisco-giants-news/san-francisco-giants-receive-harsh-grade-for-jorge-soler-trade
Dude, SI is AI these days unfortunately. Worthless.
If anyone was ripe to be traded it was Dirty Harry. He’s gonna end up being a 4 and nothing more.
Yeah, so far, I’m dubious about this kid. He’s no phenom in my book. His fastball is pedestrian in this era of 95+ with movement. If low 90s is really all he can muster, he needs to figure out how to spot it, and tighten up that breaking ball, improve the change up. Not easy to do…
Agree with Unca that Soler was hot before the trade occurred. Not like the rest of the Giants LU was the fucking “Yankees Murderers Row” either. Everyone was shuffling, except Ramos the early part of the season (ergo, he made the All Star team). Where Zaidi fucked up is not following through on that trade – either ALL IN ON THIS TEAM OR SELL.
He half-assed the trade deadline being cautious, i.e., neither a seller or a buyer. Fuck that noise. That’s why fans are pissed.

. . . and here we are, 2 runs behind the Reds.
Hey! A pulse!
Nice!
Alright, Chappy ties it.
Well, there’s Chapman with another hard hit ball, and it scores 2. He should have better offensive numbers given the hard hit rate. But, people need to get on base in front of him…
Ray has been a bit wild since coming back from Tommy John surgery (although he has always had an issue with too many walks). Couple the aforementioned with the fact that most TJ folks have issues reestablishing command of pitches, especially breaking balls. Interestingly enough, Ray is pitching harder versus before his surgery.
It’s only his 3rd start, but yeah, I’ve been wondering if Ray has aleays been this wild. Seems like some pitches he has no idea where pitch it’s going.
Yes he has
The Reds have lost each of their last eight Sunday day games.
This is a day game
Come on, Rachel. Casali can’t throw for shit.
Jeez, a team just running wild again on the Giants, and Yaz gets cut down trying to just steal one. It’s like 4:1 in teams’ stolen bases against the Giants vs Giants stealing bases…
Yeah, Ray gets through Casali’s mess of an inning.
That was really BIG. Ray did a good job pitching out of that mess. Now, the bull pen takes over.
BOOM!
Midday Wade!
Feels like Wade hasn’t homered since the Louisiana Purchase…
Thomas Jefferson was the Giants manager…
TJ and John Adams both dying on July 4, 1826 might be the freakiest thing ever…
A HBP that might turn into a triple.
Good to see Ray following suit with ignoring runners on base.
Thank God Friedl is slow as fuck.
WOW! Chappie nailed him.
If the Giants get out of this inning, they probably need an insurance run or 2 if they want to avoid their fourth straight series loss on the road.
Tyler obeys the Blade!
I aspire to be “all knowing” like the Flavster.
Pet peaves about Flemm.
Guys make a fly out or a grounder, and he says, “good swing”, but an out. Does it really matter for that at bat if the “swing” was “good”, if you make an out in a routine way? Also, since somebody mentioned he often adds an “uh” a lot on the end of words, now I’m noticing it and it’s kind of weird and bothersome…
Like saying a base hit that travelled 110 MPH means anything other than a single.
He Fitz it out of here
FItzie!!
Fitz-surance bomb!
Ask and you shall receive! Fitz!
Speaking of not hitting the long ball, Bailey hasn’t homered since April it feels like.
This Fitz kid — looks like if he just tightens up that glove and his throws in the offseason, he’s got a SS job for maybe the next 10 years…
Turns 27 next month…
I wonder if he regrets going to Louisville University? Probably not, as he graduated in 2020 with a Finance degree. Giants seem to have promoted him quickly after drafting him in 2019 (where he did not play in 2020 due to the pandemic).
ROKU announcers (and Javier Lopez) saying 18 of 20 runs in this series caused by bombs. No, this is not a bandbox.
Bustin’ it open!
Huh. Finally waking up the bats.
Good to see Beer League making hard contact.
anyone else thinking beer league guy looks like near exact copy of Soler?
The yellow cleats for sure.
ahh, good point, from the bottom up .. BL’s may be slightly brighter
Bailey has one dinger since June 24th.
Ball 6.
BoMel should put in Luciano to play SS in the bottom of the 9th. Way ahead, give him a feeling of confidence playing at the end of the game with no stresser situation…
That stadium sure emptied out.
6 SF bombs in 2 days. Is it yard, crummy Reds pitching (beside awesome Greene) or both?
I’m going with the Hempler’s Jalapeno Cheddar Sausage.
It’s SF hitting bad pitching. Just like the other way. Giants clobbered Rocks, an even worse team, too. Reds are slightly worse than the Giants, both are objectively mediocre, non playoff teams…
awesome senor locojuan.
Game. Add it to the win column.
Road series win!
Onward we trudge!
Ray only gave up 2 bombs 3 hits and pen shut Reds down rest of way. Despite 4 SBs, none contributed to them scoring a run, all that matters.
great win. 8-2 FIRMLY in play.
Fitz better keep hitting those bombs…
4 pen innings, 1 hit allowed, by Bivens with 6 run lead in 9th. Nicely done…Giants pitching on road has been major issue all season. Nice to see them win 2 of 3. 3 hits for Conforto after 2 yesterday; 2 doubles and HR. More Power! (name of nice Prestige LP 1969 by Dexter Gordon w James Moody)
Bryan Murphy says Fitz won NL rookie of month for July. Kids are gonna play a lot down stretch, and Meckler is back in Sac with McCray Matos Villar Sabol and other hitters, plus young pitching that looks promising. This is what will make or break things for Z–can he show there’s development of young Giants position players within system (ML and minors) or not. And “not” probably costs him his job.
Villar is past his due date. Sabol as well is getting on the moldy side. They are perennial AAA guys, not ML fodder. Matos has a little more upside but he’s got time.
Sabol is only 26. He hit 13 HRs last year in 310 ABs. that would be 3rd on team this year. Ramos has 15 in 290 ABs…soler has 12 in 340.
At least one of LH OFs (Conforto and Yaz) will be gone 2025, maybe both of them. Lee will be back but he’s not HR threat and will have to relearn the league.
He’s a mediocre catcher and a middling OFer.

had to look up who Walker Cooper was.
Holy Smoke! That is quite the list. Never heard of WC either, but of course, the other 8 are legendary. I’m probably dreaming & hoping against hope but if we only get a small fraction of those magic 8’s production from Fitz .. YES! YES! YES!
Atl shut out by Miami 7-0; Soler 1-3, K
Go Giants. Next up is 3/4 wins vs Nats a must. The wife and I are going to the Sat Detroit game. Webb should be pitching so I’m excited about that!
Not going up to DC for the games, but tomorrow we finally get to .500 on our way to a 4 game sweep of the Nats.
Walker Cooper was quite a character. First game ever in the MLB, he complained to the umpire about the 1st pitch he saw at bat. He retired in 1957. After his daughter, Sara (Miss Missouri 1957), married Cardinals second baseman Don Blasinggame, he noted, “You know you are getting too old when your daughter marries one of your teammates.”
Slater went from Reds to Orioles at deadline. Yesterday he led off for them and went 2-3 with double. Had to look it up but turns out he got 2 or more hits this season grand total of twice with Giants or Reds. June 12 3-5 vs. Houston and June 16 2-4 scored twice and homered vs. Angels, only 1 this year in 137 PAs.
NBC sports bay area says Ramos thumb is bothering him. Wondered why he left game yesterday and wasn’t in lineup today but that’s what it was. Told Shayna Rubin “that he is still experiencing pain…”
Did Ramos get HBP? Something happened the other day.
