A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Just Be Happy You Aren’t A White Sox Fan

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on August 5, 2024

Huge game today. Yet another chance to get back to .500. And all 7 of the next games are winnable. It’s not gonna be easy. It’s hot as fuck in Washington. No days off. And they’ve got to fly back across the country Thursday night to play in a totally different climate on Friday. But neither Washington nor Detroit should pose much of a problem. I’ve given them 1 loss to play with. This coming Sunday night I want to be able to look back on the last 10 and say “They wen’t 8-2 and we’re still in this.” LFG.

Shayna Rubin in Chron said Ramos thumb has been bothering him since Tuesday. He’s 3-21.

Also that J Reetz was with Giants yesterday bc Casali due to take paternity leave soon.

Loo was right–that was Wade Jr. first HR since July 2

BTW Willie, the Harvey Hadddix story on SABR was great. Real good guy and underrated pitcher in a very different world. I vaguely remember him as PC for Mets.

A lot of people are surprised to hear that none other than Rogers Hornsby was the hitting coach for the original ’62 Mets. Hornsby died in January ’63…

      • djloo27's avatar djloo27 said, on August 5, 2024 at 8:49 am

I especially liked how Haddix seemed to have no grudge against cigarettes for causing his death (he loved them) and how he didn’t report when traded at the very end of his career because he knew he was done and couldn’t help his new team…

Not big guy either, sounds about my size, “generously listed at 5-9.” Still one of best pitched games ever. Cool he got into coaching later

Ok. Simple math. D-Backs currently hold last NL wild card spot with .536 winning %. Projects to 87 win season. Giants need to go 31-18 to finish with 87 wins. That’s .633 pace last two months.

Seems audacious to me but I’m buying into theory that Giants barring injury have strong and deep starting rotation heading to finish line and everyday lineup showing signs of blossoming with good mix of youth and veterans.

Interesting though not necessarily encouraging stat. According to Tankathon (site I never knew about till 5 mins ago), Giants opponents strength of schedule from today to end of season is .497. However, three teams competing with Giants for NL wild card have easier opponents strength of schedule – Padres .482, Mets .490 and Braves .495.

If Giants going to make serious run, they must capitalize on next 16 games. Excluding 4 game set with Braves, other 4 opponents are Nats, Tigers, A’s and White Sox.

However, starting Aug 23rd Giants face teams with winning percentage in 10 of final 11 series to end season. Hence my skepticism that 31-18 finish plausible. Pray I’m wrong.

IDK, Dean – I would just watch the loss column. It’s easier and things can go either way in a hurry. I find this Giant team inscrutable as ever but there’s nobody all that scary out there so there’s reason to hold out some hope…

      • Dean's avatar Dean said, on August 5, 2024 at 9:14 am

Djloo…I agree on both points. No team in NL including Phillies looks unbeatable and 2024 Giants are indeed inscrutable. That’s why neither serious playoff push toward high 80’s win total at end of season nor end of season collapse reminiscent of last year would surprise me.

    • James's avatar James said, on August 5, 2024 at 9:10 am

SF also has 16 games left against the teams currently in the WC position. A somewhat more likely scenario for success is that they help prevent one or more of those teams from reaching 87 wins, and that they themselves go something like 29-20. Still a tall order. But since the best rotation in baseball declaration, they’ve given up 13 runs in 5 games. They need to maintain something close to that pace for the rest of the season.

      • djloo27's avatar djloo27 said, on August 5, 2024 at 9:15 am

Giants have the tiebreaker against the Mets anyway…

      • Dean's avatar Dean said, on August 5, 2024 at 9:18 am

James…valid point especially considering Giants have 12 games left with D-Backs and Padres combined.

      • Macdog's avatar Macdog said, on August 5, 2024 at 9:25 am

In thoae five games: 2 excellent starts, 1 decent start, 2 bad starts, where 11 of the 13 runs were scored. No chance at all if they don’t minimize the baddies.

      • James's avatar James said, on August 5, 2024 at 10:04 am

Mac, they certainly won’t be pitching shutouts in 40% of the remaining games! But if they don’t trim the team ERA by about a half a run, however they manage that, the long shot WC ain’t happening. The bullpen mainstays have to remain solid, too. Need to see more than a couple 4-3, 3-1 wins.

    • willedav's avatar willedav said, on August 5, 2024 at 9:35 am

Dbax are 9-2, and 11-4 in last 15. they aren’t staying that hot and were .500 team like Padres for 100 games. 87 Ws seems little high. I like James scenario where Giants could mess things up for someone else if they can’t get in themselves.

And yes, Loss column very important, as you can’t ever get those back.

60-57 that will be are record when the Giants get back home! Yeah go bold are go home this team is putting an ass kicking on the Nats..

Chapman on hot streak .390 last 11 games 4HR’s 4Doubles,(17HR’s now) Fitzbomber now with 11 all in over a 17 game span?? Only Ramos they will have to overcome since he first hurt his thumb against Rockies in the DH games, then keeps Re-injuring it and his stats have taken a huge hit ever since. They can’t keep having trouble with this issue for long as he even has said: I don’t feel like even going to the plate..

But have no fear Pancho Via is here!!Are u crazy Sixto? No problem Jerar Encarcion bat will light it up in Washington ( hey u play in Mexico&Sac your use to hot weather) to the tune of 3 HR’s in this series!! Pitching has been tremendous ( Harry’s ball’s the exception) BP fresh and Webb tonight followed by Birdsong to pitch them above .500!!This is their time to make a huge run!

It seems obviously that Melvin and medical staff is not helping Ramos with the day offs between off days cause it’s not working. Why not a cortisone shot in thumb after he first felt this thumb be jacked up? He could easily being headed to 10 day IL now which would be a huge blow..Out of the LU now and they’re not sure how long. Doubt they want to recall Matos yet since he’s not hitting and want him just to get reps at Sac..I would like to see McCray get a shot first!

Modus Operandi tonight on best means for Giants to win in 2024. Strong starting pitching (thanks Webby) and clutch relief pitching (Walker in 6th & Rogers brothers in 8th). Ability to plate RISP remains struggle (see top of 8th inning).

30 of last 33 games versus teams with winning percentage so Giants need to capitalize on next 2 weeks against Nats, Tigers, A’s & White Sox.
