A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Wash It Off

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on August 7, 2024

That was a tough one to lose. You stake *the best starting pitching staff in the major leagues* to a 4-0 first inning lead and you can usually take that to the bank. Sadly, Birddog wilted in the Summer swelter of Washington and the rest of the crew wasn’t much better.

They say you can’t win em all but if you’re making a case for the Giants to make the post season they pretty much have to.

Just catching up on that 1500m race. That race rivaled any of the best horse races I’ve ever seen in my life. Had tears in my eyes watching Hocker win that.

Baggs got some quotes from Posey about Bailey and Snell no hitter. Bailey has caught every inning of Snell’s last 5 starts where he’s allowed 8 hits total and BA against of .078 in 33 innings.

Posey noted that there wasn’t any pitch clock when he caught 3 no hitters including Cain perfecto so he had all time in world to think about calls. Baggs also talked about Bailey calming down both Snell (and ump) when he didn’t get 2 calls and got hot. Hopefully bat comes around but still quite valuable young C.

  6. willedav's avatar willedav said, on August 7, 2024 at 8:19 am

Snell is year younger than Gausman. No idea what type of contract he would seek in off season or whether Giants would be in on him or not.

Took look at Gausman stats on B/R, and um, decline this year rather noticeable. ERA is up to 4.50, and FIP is over 4.00. He is striking out fewer hitters, lowering K/BB rate. Jays, going nowhere at 52-61 dead last AL East, owe him for 2 more years at $23 mil each. Ouch

    • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on August 7, 2024 at 9:55 am

Right. They’ve gone in on zero guys under Farhan. Sure, they’ll sign him. And I’m winning gold in the men’s 100 meter dash.

We are the league’s rep rebuilders. Rodon, Gasman, Manaea, Bryant, even Pillar all got deals to get out of here. Next we’ll see Ray, Snell, and Chappie go.

Yay! I’ve said it a thousand times. How do you build a team on one-year opt-outs?

As we have proven time and again, they get better and leave. Or they suck and stay.

      Lose-lose.

    • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on August 7, 2024 at 10:02 am

No idea? He (Boras) wants something along the lines of 6/$300 mill. If not more.

His no-no just upped his price $5 mill a season.

If Scherzer and Verlander can make their coin both being over 40, Snell at 31 is a baby. He’s gonna command a king’s ransom.

      • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on August 7, 2024 at 10:20 am

Barring a big injury, Snell is as good as gone, and that was before the no no.

Baggarly has almost guaranteed it. Enjoy Snell’s spinning gold the next 7 weeks, because it will look meaningless next January when he signs with the Yanks or Dodgers and the Giants missed this post-season…

Phils went off on Dogs pen last night for 6-2 W. they’ve beaten LA 4 of 5 times this season. LA still starts Nick Ahmed at SS, lol. Padres (only 4 games back) won rain delayed game in Pittsburgh 6-0 as Donny Barrels 4-5 with 4 rbis. Man I miss that guy…especially watching Casey Schmitt at plate.

Will Smith btw suffering similar fate as Bailey at plate as season runs along. 1-17, 8-65 0 HRs.

    • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on August 7, 2024 at 9:14 am

They have to start Ahmed, i.e., Betts returns next week I think from injury. Ahmed is just a place holder.

      • willedav's avatar willedav said, on August 7, 2024 at 10:08 am

The Dodgers signing Ahmed in first place is indication of how desperate they are, scrambling to cover SS and left side of IF. At deadline they added journeyman Amed Rosario and still rehabbing IF Tommy Edman below average hitter most of his career from Cards, who has yet to play one inning entire year.

Lot of speculation as to where Betts plays once he’s ready to return to field. Baseball Savant has him at minus runs saved per OAA at SS. He might be in OF. Gavin Lux has started to hit for them and might stay in lineup at 2b.

This is Dodgers we’re talking about. They effed this whole thing up royally.

As Bailey’s OPS has declined steadily over the last 18 games, he’s swung at more and more pitches out of the strike zone. 4 walks in 83 PAs.

      • bassbaldy's avatar bassbaldy said, on August 7, 2024 at 9:42 am

Do think it is a sign that he — as are most others — is pressing at the plate?

I mean, over the past couple seasons we’ve seen a consistent lack of clutch hitting. The RISP eye-test this year seems to reveal it has only gotten worse.

      • James's avatar James said, on August 7, 2024 at 9:56 am

Could be. For all of the lack of RISP production, they are still going to score 700 or so runs this year. The 2010 Giants scored 697, and hit 9 points below the team average with RISP. So did the 2012 team, which scored 718 runs. Those teams weren’t “clutch,” either, performing worse under “pressure” than they did otherwise.

      • bassbaldy's avatar bassbaldy said, on August 7, 2024 at 10:03 am

So curious how the numbers can prove so much and so little simultaneously. Baseball is a weird game.

      • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on August 7, 2024 at 10:05 am

Baseball was worlds different in 2010, James. And their pitching was better starter-wise, and in the pen.

      • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on August 7, 2024 at 10:11 am

Exactly Unca (as I noted at 10:09am).

      • James's avatar James said, on August 7, 2024 at 10:20 am

Chuck, yes, the pitching was better back then. That’s the big reason they don’t have a winning record right now. When the 2010 team gave up 5 or more runs, the record was 10-52. The current team is 9-48 in those games. The gambit is that in the remaining 30 percent of the season, there are very few more games where they give up more than 4 runs.

  10. alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 said, on August 7, 2024 at 10:01 am

I would love to see the Giants call up a true CF Grant McCray move Ramos to a corner cause he’s not a centerfielder.Another bomb last night, and tons of speed this team can always use. Schmitt back to minors and like Matos just get consistent AB’s in a wasted year for both..

  11. blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on August 7, 2024 at 10:09 am

Not a fair comparison James and you know that. The game today is almost totally different from back then. Similarly, you could say the same thing about the 2010 “game” versus the Steroid era of the 90s through approximately 2007 (or whatever year, Selig, et. al. finally stopped looking the other way).

    Basically, due to these factors:

Increased Offensive Output: Baseball has seen a general increase in offensive production in recent years, partly due to factors like the baseball itself, changes in pitching mechanics, and a greater emphasis on hitting for power. Shift Defenses: The widespread adoption of shift defenses has made it more difficult for hitters to find gaps and drive in runs with runners in scoring position. However, the recent rule changes aimed at limiting shifts are likely to impact this specific trend in the coming years.

Bottom line is that this moronic Commissioner is willing to try just about anything, e.g., ghost runners, make the bases bigger, time clock, etc., to make fans return to the game.

    • James's avatar James said, on August 7, 2024 at 10:25 am

Blade, I agree the game has changed, but I’m not sure why that’s relevant to my response to Bassbaldy or the basics of runs scored versus runs allowed.

      • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on August 7, 2024 at 10:48 am

There was nothing disingenuous about making the comparison. It’s still not clear to me what’s changed about the meaning of team RISP stats between 2010 and now. Maybe you can explain.

Re new rules.. I like it they are trying new things. Baseball is more fun to watch vs recent years. More singles, more action. Way less ” single outcome” plays homer walk strikeout. More SB’s (except SF of course). Why Fitz doesn’t run more is a mystery.

Pitch clock is the best thing ever imo. I didn’t like it at 1st, but now I do. It showed that 30 minutes a game was 100% wasted time.

My point about the MLB’s rule and field (bases enlarged) changes are two-fold: 1. This Commissioner could give a fucking rat’s ass about baseball’s historic past or the fans, as he is beholden to ONLY one group – OWNERS; and, 2. He only cares about MONEY (see #1 for reason why . . . hint – they are the ones who run the game).

Bay Area sports talk and articles are so full of this constant Brandon Aiyuk situation that it’s beyond the pale. You’d think this guy was the second coming of Jerry Rice. He’s very good, but if he goes to a lower tier team to earn a couple extra million per year, watch his productivity dip. He’s not THAT good. Solid blocker, good route runner, but he’s not a regular game breaker type. Way too much hype. I don’t know why the Niners have gone so long letting this situation just hang. Maybe Unca knows…

    • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on August 7, 2024 at 1:38 pm

Well, BA has a solid thing going with Purdy. That is his big selling point. And he is trending upward in a big way. However, it is the team making him better, not the other way around.

If he goes to Cleveland, his numbers will drop when he becomes the 1 and they drop double coverage on him. Wilson and Fields could wind up being a disaster for the Steelers.

The Niners regularly run plays to guarantee single coverage on BA and he does get open when single-covered.

Beyond that he has NO leverage. THe Niners don;t need to trade him. They can simply let him sit out the year. Next year, they franchise him. The season after that? Franchise him. They have control of him for the next 3 seasons.

They are holding out for a big enough haul to let him go.

At Sac K rate is 26%. Not much power 11 HRs total btw 2 teams, and 12 SBs vs. 2 CS in 91 games. He’s not on 40 man so idk if he’d be part of team before September. someone to keep eye on for sure as 23 yr old.

Wisely in for Schmitt today at 2b. Keith Law has a pet peeve about using OPS to judge value of individual players–he says giving equal weight to OB and slugging isn’t accurate for how it affect ability of team to score runs, and getting on base (and not making outs) in first place is more valuable.

Some of the young Giants hitters have struggled mightily to do this…Schmitt OB is .209, Matos .211. these guys are making out almost 80% of time they are at bat. “Kids” or not, unwatchable.
