A’s played Thursday in NYC and beat Mets. Birds has given up 12 runs and 4 bombs in last 2 starts where he’s lasted 6 innings. Command seems to be issue (19 BBs in 36.2 innings), with breaking ball and fastballs he leaves in happy zone.

Lowly Angels beat Braves last night, and Rox cooled off Padres in Nepal. A’s and ChiSox games aren’t gimmes. Giants would need to go 22-16 to get to 84 Ws. Best start now.

Speaking of real first games, Knicks at Celts Oct. 22 opening night, w ring ceremony.

23-15 imo. 4/5 vs A’s and Chisox a must. My friend Greg and his brothers (diehards who do a travel trip to see a SF road trip every year for last 15 years) will be at all 3 Seattle games! Hopefully they will be meaningful.

Intersecting article about his struggles. A bummer. I was hoping he would be down for a few weeks and come back with his head and his mechanics on track. Seems less likely after reading this:(

  5. willedav's avatar willedav said, on August 17, 2024 at 11:34 am

Doval pitched clean inning last night for Sac, 3 up 3 down 1 K groundout and flyout on 12 pitches, 8 strikes.

Aiyuk drama I looked up Tyreek Hill career. fun fact: first ever pass he caught in real NFL game was 9 yrd TD from Alex Smith.

I get everybody wants to get paid when team does well, but Hill got to 2 SBs with Chiefs and Mahomes, winning once, and hasn’t been back since the trade.

  6. alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 said, on August 17, 2024 at 11:52 am

For Doval it’s all between the ears he wants to things his own way which has been quite annoying for Melvin and his staff.Rumors are he’s uncoachable. He’s walking far to many hitters from past years relying far to much on his slider then his 100 mph heater. He can’t throw for strikes. Then the whole pitch clock and not giving a shit about runners on base with his slow delivery to the plate resulting in easy steals is maddening.

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on August 17, 2024 at 1:00 pm

So, all that, yet (1) they don’t trade him at the deadline and then( 2) demote his sorry ass to AAA two weeks later — thereby officially torpedo his value as a head case on the off season trade market, even if he comes back and succeeds for the last month or so…

      • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on August 17, 2024 at 1:33 pm

Snarkk’s points are valid, particularly the 2nd one about Doval’s demotion and diminished value. FG column identifies the problems perfectly, but doesn’t have any answers (or he would be making millions in consultation fees from MLB teams as the author notes).

My opinion? I don’t think he is salavageable. Many, many relievers do NOT have Rivera, Hoffman, Nathan, etc., like careers. Most are like Wilson, Casilla, or Romo, with 2-3 years of outstanding closer stuff; and, then you plug in someone else (in house usually) or pay through the nose for someone on another team.

      • alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 said, on August 17, 2024 at 2:10 pm

Yeah i agree with both Snarkk and Blade.Doval’s value is now in the toilet and Unsalvageable as Blade mentioned. If the Giants Melvin&Staff were so frustrated in him, then Farhan should of pulled the trigger at the deadline for good prospects if they already felt Walker could easily do the job without any headcase drama.

      • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on August 17, 2024 at 3:24 pm

Yep. Spot on, Snarkk. The whole Soler deal is the same. Farhan seems too busy shooting himself in the feet to make meaningful deals and making the team better.

All that and you look on ESPN and “the Giants are in the hunt”. Its like, seriously? This team has tripped over its collective dick 200 times this year.

That being said, it’ll be pretty trippy going to the Coliseum tomorrow. Read an article in the chron about Melvin and his going to see the Who/Dead show there, and the ODs on the Green that he went to.

I saw ~5 baseball games, 2 football games and about 15 concert there. Last one being Pink Floyd in 1987.

    • willedav's avatar willedav said, on August 17, 2024 at 1:20 pm

What FG column said was slider is his most effective pitch, not the 100 mile heater. That pitch (cutter) results in most damage against and it’s lost some of the movement he once had. the problem identified in the column is that Doval hasn’t been able to locate the slider near the strike zone early in the count and misses away too often, and winds up being behind in count.

As Melvin said: strike throwing and time to the plate are things he needs to fix.

.I’m real excited by 1B 6’7 Bryce Eldridge development at only 19. is the future first baseman for sure right now after two home runs game yesterday is on a nine game hitting streak, 16/17 on base overall)reaching base last games and in those 17 games, he has hit 25 for 64 With five home runs one triple four doubles, 16 walks and just 15 strikeouts. The Giants need to move them up to AARichmond now! He leads all Giants minor league hitters in HR’s now and his .991OPS and 174 wRC numbers are off the charts insane..

The kid looks like a sure thing, hope the hype doesn’t end up being just that, like a lot of Giants farmhands.

BTW, why are the Giants drafting Left handed power? In this yard? Unless this kid ends up being Barry Bonds all over, it seems to me you draft for right handed power for Oracle Park…

  8. blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on August 17, 2024 at 2:58 pm

AK and snarkk, related to Doval’s diminished value; is the fact that yesterday, Zaidi “hinted” Snell will likely opt out of his 2 year @!#*&%$ contract. Along with me, you both, and a few others here – WE KNEW THIS WAS GOING TO HAPPEN.

I am so pissed at myself for being blinded by his PhD and BS for so many years. If brains were gasoline, Zaidi couldn’t run an ant’s go-kart two laps around a Cheerio.

  9. alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 said, on August 17, 2024 at 3:15 pm

And speaking of likely Opt out it’s Matt Chapman for sure..

What do you guys think about going after FA 3B Alex Bregman a solid RH power hitter not the speed are glove but always puts up great stats and has W/S rings tainted are not on his resume and a solid likable teammate so people say. Then again if Farhan is still around it’s all lip service to us fans.

    • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on August 17, 2024 at 3:35 pm

Absolutely down with Bregman. Come on up! Year younger versus Chapman; 23 season he was top 25 MVP and prior to this year, was in discussion for MVP 3-4 other times. Chapman a better fielding 3B and having a better year than Bregman, but I still like him.

    • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on August 17, 2024 at 3:36 pm

Yeah! Let’s sign him to a 1 year opt out deal! I’m so tired of this. We aren’t going to grow a team this way with even the hope of the prospects. The way you do it is gave GOOD players 4-5 year deals. Say, a guy that was readily available like Juan Soto. Our last couple 3-year deals went to Glenn Kuiper’s favorite player, Mitch Haniger, and fucking Tommy Corleone LaStella.

Woo Hoo! The deck chairs on the Titanic analogy has never been more valid with this Giants front office.

    • willedav's avatar willedav said, on August 17, 2024 at 3:38 pm

Hopefully Giants extend Chapman, good off season get and very valuable player.

      • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on August 17, 2024 at 3:45 pm

Do you think we will pay him?

      • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on August 17, 2024 at 3:47 pm

I’m down with Chapman too Willie. However, his agent is Boras. Good Mercury News article about his desire to stay with us, but it will cost us.

        https://www.mercurynews.com/2024/08/15/matt-chapman-says-hes-open-to-long-term-deal-with-sf-giants-just-waiting-on-them/

That being said, Bregman cost is already $30.5 million per year versus Chapman $18 million. Fairly certain, both will be asking for raises.

      • willedav's avatar willedav said, on August 17, 2024 at 3:52 pm

        Yes I do.

Opt outs are price you pay to acquire player on shorter term deal who doesn’t get monster contract he wants. Cody Bellinger left Dodgers for Cubs team that won 74 games, but demanded opt outs. Carlos Correa left Stros for Twins and did same thing–3 year deal but with opt outs.

Snell has had great second half and is awesome to watch but no way I’d give him the monster deal he wants; let someone else do it. so fine, enjoy what you have and let him go. Same thing with Rodon-Giants got one good year out of him, he signed big deal with Yanks and then got hurt. perfect!

      • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on August 17, 2024 at 4:23 pm

Well, yeah. Other teams, good or bad, are willing to take chances on guys like Gasman, Rodon, Manaea, Chappie, Ray, Snell, Bryant, or whoever the fuck we have rehabilitated and let walk. And I don’t give a fuck if they have failed. The point is, we get a year or 2 and they go.

We just haven’t pursued any of the guys we helped on their way to a big payday. Fucking Judge used us, just like Stanton, and Harper, etc etc etc during their negotiations. So we are GREAT for players looking to jack up their bank accounts.

  10. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on August 17, 2024 at 3:35 pm

I couldn’t believe Farhan actually said that. Gee, ya think? What about Ray? And Chapman? What about everyone you sign that is worth a damn, Farhan? I was like “there’s Cap’t. Obvious and then there’s Zaidi”.

I’ve only been bitching about building a team on 1 year opt-outs deals as an impossibility for 2 years now. And the fun goes on and he’s perplexed why guys leave? Utter insanity.

    • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on August 17, 2024 at 3:51 pm

If Zaidi was so confident in Chapman or Snell for that matter – he would have locked them up for years last year versus these stupid 2 year option deals. Worse, (as you said Unca), how in the fuck do you build a power house franchise a la Bums, Yanks, Braves, etc., that way with 2 year option contracts? Like a proverbial “revolving door.”

      • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on August 17, 2024 at 3:56 pm

This type of annual shit screams 2nd rate franchise. Sure, on paper and per Forbes, Giants are #3 (or #2?) net worth to the Yankees and Dodgers, but Zaidi and Junior Johnson act like this is a 2nd tier team.

      • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on August 17, 2024 at 4:26 pm

Right. We’ve spent a lot of money this season, but for what? We’ve already dumped Soler. Ray, Snell, and likely Chappie will all leave, thus negating those deals. So we are once again looking to fill holes with marginal mid-level guys.

  11. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on August 17, 2024 at 4:30 pm

The only way we will ever truly be competitive is through our farm system. And we just haven’t been very good at doing that. I still feel it’s time to do a major overhaul at least with our farm coaching and scouting departments. Hard to replace owners. We just don’t see 4/5 tool players anymore.

  35. Paul Sorensen's avatar Paul Sorensen said, on August 17, 2024 at 7:38 pm

It will be interesting to see how the 3 big opt-outs unfold, likely with 3 different results. Snell said last off-season he wanted to play for the Yankees. Anybody who wants to play for the Yankees is not going to be satisfied playing in SF. He’s gone. Chapman said after signing that he would probably opt-out but would be interested in signing a new bigger contract with the Giants. As discussed here already, G’s could re-sign him but also look at Bregman. Ray? Doubtful he’ll be *good* enough by end of season to command a big contract, so he’ll likely opt-in and G’s could be stuck with an underperformer for another year. Right. As others have said here, not the way to build a team. Z’s biggest move at the trading deadline was dumping the biggest offensive free agent Z himself signed just a few months before. Have had more than enough of his plug-n-play moves….

    • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on August 17, 2024 at 8:06 pm

    • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on August 17, 2024 at 8:16 pm

Agree Unca. Boras will not let Chapman make less than Bregman (as he is having a way better season). Count on him costing a lot. No idea who Ray’s agent is, but with our luck, I bet Boras is his agent too. Snell can leave. I hate paying ANY pitcher to come to our ball park. We should be fucking home growing them by the bushel.

  37. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on August 17, 2024 at 8:41 pm

We should be drafting hitters and signing pitchers.

    • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on August 17, 2024 at 9:32 pm

Disagree unca. Candlestick and this park proves that Sabean and (admittedly) Zaidi have had success in drafting pitchers to play in this pitcher’s park. That being said, we should be having way more success in drafting hitters too (as you suggest), but we have been mediorce at it (although Fitz, Ramos, and Bailey are give us all hope). We definitely have not had as much success as the Dodgers have in drafting good hitters. That’s a fact.

Basically, I would much rather develop pitchers via the draft versus paying a 1st line starter to come here for a gazillion dollars and multiple contract years.

  38. Paul Sorensen's avatar Paul Sorensen said, on August 17, 2024 at 9:10 pm

Boras was rather unsuccessful getting most of his clients the deals they wanted in the off-season. I had thought some of them would fire him after that, but I think only one did (Montgomery?). I think Chapman really wants to re-sign with SF; let’s see if Boras leads him down a dark path or if Chappie puts his foot down… haha.
