A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Salvaged Split

Exciting win. I know it made my dad happy who I spoke with after the game. I was most excited about Josh Dobbs who looked like a more than capable back up to Purdy (who looked awful btw). Niners need Trent Williams in camp like yesterday.

Dobbs was great. Thanks for these threads Flav, I’ll miss them once season ends.

Break up overreactions on good side for what was an awful week.

Wisely and Schmitt suck. Statcast will show Wisely unable to field ball hit at whatev velo right at him that wound up being a hit late game. More than ready for return of Estrada from Sac. 3-5 yesterday with HR, 2-5 day before with double. Give him rest of year to see what he can do if fully healthy. Or do Giants need to make FA H S Kim an offer he can’t refuse in off season.

What delight to watch McCray play CF! coming in on ball, going to left, back behind him to the wall, 4 nice grabs in short time span. As Kruk said, if he can hit at all…

Saw brief look at IF alignment during one of his ABs: 2b in hole, SS foot or two to left of 2b and deep, 3b playing halfway depth of normal SS. Caramba, work on how he can use this to his advantage whenever P throws anything on outer half of plate and away from his defense. Plenty of room to bunt with, etc., where he can use speed to his advantage to get on and cause havoc once he’s there.

1b…Wade Jr (thanks for mrsportsdude for bringing him up) has been awful for 2 months since he was hurt in June, hitting .170 over 112 ABs with 2 HRs. OB is still high andi I love his line drive approach and patience, but BA has sunk from .331 June 1 to .274 at present. Power obviously non existent, 1 HR at home all year.

Canha is similar type of hitter and definite D upgrade, but still more of OB guy than power hitter. 7 HRs all year in 400 PAs, and none (1 double only XBH) in small sample of 40 PAs with Giants.

Surprised Giants haven’t stuck Encarnacion over there, where he did play some in Sac. Again, another issue–teams have survived without power bat over there; Snow never hit for as much power once team moved into new yard and Huff only did it once. Do Giants need to go out and get Pete Alonso or stronger RH power bat to cover 1b or not?

While Giants may be going “nowhere”, it is still hella fun to watch Blake Snell, and no prospects can come close. Doval, on other hand, could/should have been moved elsewhere, simple addition by subtraction as Walker proved yesterday.

I was pretty optimistic until I finally looked at our schedule. Braves on pace for 86 wins, For us to get 86 we go 23-13. Not impossible. After Chicago ( a sweep is a must against worst team maybe ever) so next up we hit a bit of a challenge for a .500 team (insert laughing emoji)

Milwaukee, Miami, Az, SD, Milwaukee again, SD, Baltimore, KC, AZ, StL

Take away Miami and we play 8/9 series’ against teams a combined 83 games over .500. YIKES!

We must have the hardest schedule left

Big time pressure on Giants to sweep this historically dogmeat White Sox crew.

I hope they do, but the given the pathetic way the Giants hit, there is no way I would lay down any money on the Giants sweeping Chicago.

If they are feeling pressure to beat the White Sox, there’s no hope.

One more rant…C. Bailey has zero excuse after what happened last year, to be out of gas again in August. He’s been even worse than Wade Jr. at bat, as auto an out as regular can be. this cannot happen; do something different with off season conditioning, as in maybe add some weight and lower body/core strength.

Time to move on from Casali, or Reetz or Murphy if these are options. Sabol isn’t hitting much (.228 6 HRs) at hitter friendly Sac and he’s crummy C anyway.

Elias Diaz was let go by Rox and he can at least hit a little with some decent seasons in recent past. Right now anything would be an improvement and he’d probably be happy not to have work with pitching and playing half year in Coors.

    • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on August 19, 2024 at 9:00 am

yeah the Bailey Fade is something he shouldn’t be getting away with. Question him.

  8. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on August 19, 2024 at 10:11 am

Been bitching about Bailey for a while now. With Schmitt and Wade and even Canha in there as well, or whomever, we are just anemic as hell. We get Fitz, Ramos, and Encarnacion providing what little power we have. Yaz is Yaz. Since we can’t get any power hitters to come here, get fast line drive hitters.

I mean really, slow and powerless isn’t really working these past 6 years.

    • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on August 19, 2024 at 10:14 am

schmitt is a complete lost cause. There’s no dumber hitter in the organization.

  9. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on August 19, 2024 at 10:35 am

Yep. They must be blind to the fact he can’t hit anything but a piped fastball. And even that is 20-80. He’s past the ‘kid call-up’ stage of his career.

    Utter insanity.

Bailey did say he added 15lbs of beef in the off-season which was great to start the season at Oracle and the early season road trips. But yeah going into places like Washington,Pittsburgh,Cincinnati basically any where east coast, it will drain your energy/weight.Not sure if it’s sophomore jinx, but Giants know they have nobody else except for the automatic 0-4 Casali to give him a breather on the last game of a series are he could DH a game which he has.

Agree the backup catcher situation stinks!!

What the hell ever happened with Tom Murphy??A freaking flapper could of made it back faster on the field then this chump..Did he tear both Testicles off his nut sacks??Talk about taking the easy paycheck year off..

Thank shit for brains Zaidi for shipping Bart to the Pirates, where his line is 2.1 WAR, 12 bombs, .277 BA, .351 OBP, and .882 OPS. All in 173 at bats.

    Sigh . . .

    • willedav's avatar willedav said, on August 19, 2024 at 11:35 am

Since 2019 at AA ball for Richmond, Bart has never ever hit as well for Giants anywhere at any level in the organization as he is right now. 2023 he had .750 OPS at Sac, but only hit 6 HRs, not for same power and slugging (.532) like he is doing with Pirates right now. 2023 for Giants he hit .207 with OPS of .528 off ML pitching and 0 HRs in 95 ABs.

Good for him, but even Giants coaches in Kapler era like Donnie Ecker couldn’t help him here.

      • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on August 19, 2024 at 11:54 am

Not going to check to see where he is hitting these bombs, but the Pirates stadium is as difficult, if not more difficult than Oracle to hit out of the park. My point is more to Zaidi, i.e., please explain to me how much better we are today versus year one when he arrived 6 years ago? You make fair points about Bart, but my venom is more directed at Zaidi and his clueless staff.

To me (and others here at the Flap and SF bay area), he totally sucks. I wont count the ways, because they are so numerous. No one here is a GM or runs a MLB team, but we have eyes and I am saying Zaidi needs to go. Like yesterday.

Tired of his BS news conferences too, as he is so full of shit, he should have flush handles instead of ears, e.g., “. . . we have the best pitching staff in baseball.”

Bailey has almost the same stats in 96 games this year as he finished with in 97 games last year.

I think being in a platoon situation was one reason Bart did well this year. Might want to think about that next year with Bailey.

So next year we need another catcher, 1B who doesn’t get hurt, someone at 2B (I still say Luciano would fit better a 3B), crossing my fingers that Fitz doesn’t fizzle at SS and 3B. The new GM is going to have a lot to do.

  15. zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on August 19, 2024 at 12:30 pm

Yeah, that Schmitt AB the other day to end the game…..it was really one of the worst AB’s I’ve ever seen from a major leaguer. The two previous batters had worked so hard to extend their ABs and get on base, and then Schmitt gets up there and acts like he’s wearing a blindfold and his hair is on fire, swings at three terrible pitches, and his AB is over super quickly. If that’s his baseball IQ, then he’s probably hopeless.

  16. zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on August 19, 2024 at 12:32 pm

I would agree that anything less than a sweep of the White Sox is an epic fail. There’s a flicker of hope left for this season for the Giants, but they have to sweep the Sox.

  17. zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on August 19, 2024 at 12:46 pm

Indy Fever’s Clark came back from the Olympic break looking well-rested and a few pounds heavier (which she needed), and has been a lot of fun to watch play in her first two games after the break. Two wins over quality teams, and she’s pushing the ball up the court as quickly as ever. They have the most entertaining fastbreak since Magic’s Laker showtime, and I don’t think I’m exaggerating. Of course, it helps that the NBA and WNBA put in “take foul” and “clear path foul” rules that gave extra penalty to the defense, and brought fastbreaks back into those leagues. And her Fever teammates have learned to sprint out into a lane, and go towards the basket, don’t flare out to the three-point line. Clark is bringing back fastbreaks that end in lay-ups, or her teammates missing the layup, which happens sometimes. She’s just clearly the most entertaining player in the league. Yeah, she turns the ball over once in a while, but it’s in the process, usually, of pushing the ball up the court. Stewart and Wilson, and others in the WNBA are great players, of course, but they don’t move the entertainment level of the league forward as much, IMO. The average fan can watch a Fever game and pretty quickly realize they’re seeing something different.

Stewart’s team or Wilson’s team will still probably win the championship this season because of stronger overall rosters on their teams, but the Fever could be an interesting team in this year’s playoffs.

I actually care about the WNBA playoffs. That’s crazy talk.

    • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on August 19, 2024 at 1:05 pm

No Zum, that’s not crazy talk. Happy for you that this league resonates with you. Maybe I should try watching. NFL = not really interested unless I am betting Draftkings, as football today is a totally watered down game, with defenses being penalized by rules and over zealous refs, e.g., “Statue” Brady is the so-called GOAT . . . give me a break, as I can give you at least a 1/2 dozen other QBs in history better than him.

If not for the Giants (and again, betting), I would give up watching baseball too, as the owners and Commissioner ONLY see it as a way to line their pockets, e.g., almost 1/2 the league gets a playoff pass; ghost runners; DH; time clocks; bigger bases; interleague play; pitching specialists up the ying yang, etc. Baseball was almost a religion for me at one time.

College basketball I use to watch, but there is no continuity anymore with the players, i.e., the good players leave after 1-2 years. Same deal with college football.

      • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on August 19, 2024 at 1:59 pm

College football at least the players stick around for 3-4 years. But with the realign($$$$$$$)ment and decimation of the PAC-12, it’s just a fucking money grab for the ig (SEC) schools. Travesty what they did to the game.

It was more that I was curious about whether her college success would translate into success in the WNBA. To me, the overall narrative was what was most interesting. I was pleasantly surprised at how entertaining her team’s games are. I just really like up-tempo basketball. I rarely ever watched her play in college. I have lost interest so much in college basketball. My NBA interest is mostly just watching the Kings. I did pull for the Warriors in their dynasty era, and watched a lot of their games. They have been a very entertaining team. Curry has been the biggest star in the league in this era, and I think, deep down, LeBron knows that.

As a person, Clark seems like a lot of pro athletes: not that interesting and gives boring interviews. And she could cut down on the number of long “logo three-point” attempts. She’s missing a lot of those, and she doesn’t need them. And she makes some rookie mistakes. She got a technical foul yesterday when she punched the thing that holds up the backboard. She had to know that was going to get a technical. She has five technicals now, and seven brings a one-game suspension. In a 40-game season, a one-game suspension is a big deal. I think she’s made a conscious attempt to have a more intense persona on the court, and be more of a leader for her team. There was a “getting to know each other” process the Fever went through at the beginning of the season, and they’ve realized what they can be if they just let her keep pushing the tempo.

I used to have DVD of hers, actually quite good. Unfortunate Cam Brink got hurt, as missing a year won’t help development and adjustment to League.

I would put the odds at about 50/50 Zaidi is back next season, to finish his contract. The Giants are generally not a very ‘fire people” type of organization.

I’m pretty amazed that Boone and Roberts have managed their teams as long as they have. Especially Boone. The Yanks have been surprisingly patient with him. With the talent Roberts has had to work with, his team has under-achieved.
