To Extend Or Not To Extend
Matt Chapman, the first Giants 3rd baseman since the great Freddy Lindstrom to bang 20 bombs, 30 doubles and 10 steals in a season. Who’s up for a Chappy extension? Aye? Nay? I don’t know man, I love this guy and was supportive of him all year even during his slump but I don’t see the point in giving him 150 million dollars. He’s 31, he’s only gonna get worse from here. I would reluctantly vote no on an extension but I’m not gonna blow my brains out if we give him one either.
Oh yeah sign him up. Giants MVP by long shot and role model for younger set.
What Loo said, about Chapman getting to “Mr. Ed territory”–23 bombs that led team 2023, .500 slugging, .863 OPS all team highs. Really unfortunate injury wiped him out this year.
Btw Wade Jr. hit 17 HRs last year, stuck on 4 right now. did have 2 hits and rbi last night.
Dodgers finally DFA’d Nick Ahmed. They had picked up and DFA’d Cavan Biggio and Amed Rosario earlier…appears they could get Muncy and Tommy Edman (CF) back on roster.
Chappie is another Boras client so he’s gonna hardline any deal. Fitz has the arm for 3rd. Chappie is good, but the future isn’t a 32 year old guy.
After what happened to Boras guys and others in FA market last year it might be easier to get them to table. Teams weren’t bidding on types of long term deals these guys were looking for. It’s still up to the player. Losing player of Chapman’s value (offense defense baserunning) would really hurt; let Fitz stay where he is and take over SS where he actually looks good and solve other issues.
Hey if Freddy was y dead he would be my choice! The dude put up incredible numbers,.311 lifetime avg, walked more than he struck out in his 10 year career ( not many can say that)231 hits one season and a HOF player..
That being said and he’s dead 💀 I would move onto the living and definitely sign Chapman what the hell u don’t want a perennial GG winner that constantly gives you 155–160 games a season? Even at 32 where’s the slow down, hell he’s second on the team in Steals.
Now if he does opt out ( likely but who knows if the Giants don’t have something brewing they both like) then what’s wrong with Alex Bregmen who’s younger more power, more HR’s,lifetime avg near .290 yeah maybe not the fielder Chappy is but a very solid replacement and no Longoria 2.0 at his way younger age than he was..
Cmon u can’t have guys like laughable Schmitt,Villar( gone next year),even Fitz,Lucky, all blowing up at 3rd you need a steadying influence like Chapman are Bergman over there.Hell they still have to fill 1B/2B ( though I could still live with Estrada if he can up his game , never seen a guy get hit as often as he does he’s a magnet, fucked up his season with that wrist injury,Wisely, ehh just a platoon dude..
Ooops wrong place. .
not sure why I find this stat so interesting ..
G’s Top 5 RBI leaders:
Chapman 62/466 ABs
Ramos 58/344
Conforto 51/334
Estrada 43/333
Canha 41/355
Hicks was awfully wild out there. Casali saved him couple times from moving tying run into scoring position. that last diving snag was amazing.
Chi would have tied the game had those both gotten by. Casali saved that one.
Hicks looked worse than Doval. Maybe it’s just me but I think we should be grooming Rodriguez for the closer role.
Not into 31 year old ball players, particularly giving them long term contracts. Much less guys that were absolute zeros as recently as 2020 (putrid that season), 2021 (struck out 202 times – most in A’s history) and 2022 for Toronto (although he did have 27 bombs). Those were supposed to be his “peak years.” He’s also older than Bregman by about a year. Last, but not least, Boras is Boras – he doesn’t change his stripes. Sure, if a player doesn’t like what he is doing, they find a new agent, but Boras is going to get the last red cent from whichever club(s) he is dickering with.
Similarly, I am not certain Bregman is the answer either. That being said, I agree with AK, we have to get someone to fill the position. My idea is this: concurrent with looking for a new 3rd baseman, also look for a shortstop. Fitzgerald has played 3rd base position a lot, so it isn’t a stretch that he can move over there. I actually think he profiles better as a 3rd baseman versus a shortstop.
Per what I said about looking for a shortstop, where Fitz moves to 3rd, we should have Willy Adames on our radar. Shit, he can compete with Fitz for the SS position, as Adames is soon to be 29 . . . This is what one site says about Adames:
“There’s a steep drop-off in MLB free agency when you’re looking for hitters beyond Juan Soto. Cases could be made for several outfielders, but Willy Adames stands out because of his positional value, bat and defense. Adames ranks top five among shortstops in Defensive Runs Saved since 2022 and he’s top three in FanGraphs‘ Defensive rating. Over that same stretch, he owns the fifth-best walk rate and is top-12 in OPS. Considering how hard it was for MLB teams to find a good shortstop on the trade market during the 2024 season, a 29-year-old Adames should have a litany of suitors and the Los Angeles Dodgers will be the favorites.”*
*Also, if we sign him, we get to say FUCK YOU Bums!
Just because we are losing Chappie doesn’t mean we would keep Villar/Schmitt/Wisley.
They should be jettisoned. They can keep Wisely as a backup, but Villar and Schmitt are hopeless at the plate.
Get Jung Hoo Lee’s buddy Ha-Seong Kim from the Pads.
Spend some real money on a real player.
Sign Brandon Lowe at 2nd. He shouldn’t cost too much and he’s got decent numbers. Fitz has the arm for 3rd.
Conforto can go. On the fence with Yaz, but Ramos, Encarnacion, Lee, and McCray are a solid OF. Put Ramos in LF. Lee in CF and McCray in RF. Yaz can be the 4th OFer.
Sign him we need players who know how to play the game and like williedav said good roll model.
Sign him. We can’t keep recycling the entire lineup every year. Great D helps the pitchers. We talk about overpaying to get hitters. He will be a solid player for 3/5 years imo. We have to start somewhere. Having a proven veteran as a base will also help sign others. He is a solid guy and we need at least one hitter we can’t count on to be consistent.
Bailey and a solid backup. Chapman. Ramos. Fitz. maybe McCray? Too early to tell.
Lose Conforto, Yaz (unless as a 4th), Sign a 2b, 1b (wade a backup on a championship team. Sign Snell too. He is more likely to stay if Chapman on the team!
If you go to Stathead and compare Chapman and Bregman both are quite similar players but Bregman is far the superior player, more HR’s like 600 less K’s in career, higher OPS,OBP, steals, batting average every stat across the board better.Chapman for sure the better fielder for sure the only drawback but with Chapman opt out and Bregman a FA you just have to cover all your options. Both are Ironman players and team well respected players..
Fitz at 3rd as Blade mentioned maybe works just not sure of his arm strength especially compared to Chapman’s cannon, even Bregman. Was t thrilled when Roberts beat out Fitz throw at SS last night either when he does his occasional backhand play hesitated and his throw was late. But hell his bat and speed plus the dirtiest uni on the team says HUSTLE and BALLER!! If only they could get Lucky Luciano fielding and hustle the same way they could have 2 dynamic players on the infield somewhere..
See what I said about Adames AK . . . Adames might consider playing 3rd base, where we keep Fitz at SS. Adames is the 2nd best position player available per this site, after Soto in 2025.
https://sportsnaut.com/top-mlb-free-agents-2025/
Yeah Blade , Adames would definitely be a solid player to add! If a happy bails you could slide Fitz to 3rd and Adames a far superior SS takes over. And both will supply power a win win and especially if you can fuck the Dodgers though u know they will be in the hunt for him as well to fuck the Giants!
And after we lose out on Soto ( always lip service that never delivers with the Giants)Adames would be a nice upgrade!
Just for the unimaginable but Damm my Dream OF of Soto RF,Lee CF,Ramos LF and McCray all 3 spots backup yeah I’m drooling 🤤
Forgot Lee. With that base and solid pitching we are competitive. OF of Lee, Ramos, McCray (hopefully will be solid) and Yaz as a backup. Younger and athletic.
Encarnacion as well.
Luciano at 2nd. Sign a 1B too and we are good. Better.
Get Alonso, but I would check with Mac and Loo first, as they know him better than us West Coast guys.
Alonso is a moron with a stupid haircut but can go 40/110 in a coma. Much improved defensively. Pull hitter too.
I vote yes…
Keep Fitz at short. Why mess with success? Chappy at 3rd:)
You guys are right to talk about offseason moves.
Giants now have a 9% chance of making the playoffs, per KNBR talkers. Struggling to beat the useless ChiSox just validates that.
I say keep Chapman, he’s a rock of the infield. Apparently, for some reason he wants to stay — that’s a plus. We’ll see about that when he’s a FA, he’s a Bora$$ client.
Coach Kerr 3 point play at the Dem Convention . . . Great speech!

Here’s another, not directed at anyone here: just hope that if things turn out a certain way those in their hooded sheets busy hurling insults at TV stay there.
wonder sometimes how far we’ve come since Bob Gibson couldn’t stay at same hotel in ST as rest of his teammates.
I deleted my comment Willie. Not worth getting misinterpreted and starting any nonsense…
That’s OK. What I said wasn’t directed to anyone here, just ugly stuff I see on social media from “friends” of mine.
Neither was mine, sometimes I just type…
Sorry, but Chappy’s combo stat concoction from up top don’t impress me…
no games are gimmes. Rox (worst team NL) just took 2 of 3 from Padres and lead season series against them 8-5. Over that 3 game series Padres went 4-24 with RISP. Padres had won 19 of 22 before that.
Ribbies are a counting stat. Kinda like 3 point shots made, more opportunities you have, the better. Aaron leads everyone for career total and has 300 more than BB and almost 400 more than Mays.
Per Keith Law, “Bonds hit 450 solo HRs and had 412 baserunners on for his other HRs. Aaron… hit 390 solo HRs and had 482 baserunners on for his other HRs.”
Further he says, “So even though Bonds out- homered Aaron in about 300 fewer games (and got on base more often and hit for more power in total) Aaron ended up with about 300 more rbis in his career. Bonds was the better hitter, but Aaron gets the rbi glory.”
Mays had very low quality table setters for most of his career…
Agree Loo about Willie. He never had very good 1 or 2 hitters. As our Willie said, RBIs are a manipulated (or running) stat. I still imagine what Mays could have done with someone like Carew batting ahead of him.
Hey, you should have left your comment up. Not offended either. I didn’t watch the game last night and decided to watch the Dem convention, but missed Kerr’s speech somehow. Anyway, I didn’t know if he was a Dem, Libertarian, Republican, or Mexican (say what?).
Cards released Crawford.
No surprise with Crawford’s release played in just 28 games with 80AB’s and hit .169 with terrible OBP, he was just a mentor for their solid everyday SS Masyn Winn? He will certainly clear waivers but who really needs a 37 year old SS with nothing left? Best scenario for him the Giants give him a 1 day contract at the end of the season so he can retire as a Giant as rightfully he should..
My 2025 fantasy Giants team Lineup:
Not bad at all…
I could work with that Blade even if Alonso is a liability at 1st and K’s alot he would pepper HR’s to left and center for 40 bombs..
Thanks AK and Loo . . . He actually has worked really hard to improve his fielding from what I have researched. This year 6 errors versus Wade 1 (however, Wade had 10 last year versus Alonso 6).
Good video of Alonso fielding highlights . . . https://www.youtube.com/watch?app=desktop&v=HOCmtE6CoPE
Yrah, I wouldn’t call Alonso a liability at 1B. He’s not going to win any Gold Gloves, but he does good enough, especially handling potential errant throws from his IFs.
idk, cursory look at numbers makes it seem like he’s not having as good a year as before in career. ISO and slugging are down to lowest point in his 6 years. He’s at 27 HRs so 35-40 seems unlikely with 36 games to go after tonight.
BA is up in .240s but he’s year removed from hitting .217. Anyone in middle of order with that kind of BA is gonna make a lot of outs, runners on or not.
Eldridge is prospect sure, but he could be here in 2 yrs max.
Bailey to IL with oblique strain. Reetz back up
If they won’t stick Luciano at 3B, I’d redo the rest of Chapman’s 3 year contract and maybe add a year. If nothing else, it has to beat playing Farhan roulette at that position. Four GGs in his 8 years as a MLer, is pretty damn good and probably a selling point to FA pitchers
Outs above average on Baseball Savant rates Alonso #35 at 1b, and at -5 for OAA and runs prevented. As a comp, Wade Jr. is 0 for runs prevented and OAA.
Yikes well we’re screwed at Catcher without Bailey and those oblique injuries are always dicey so it could be longer then the 1O days IL.And no I’m not buying into Casali one game wonder and no faith in Reetz on a cracker.Teams are going to run wild without Bailey. Yeah he’s struggled maybe the oblique been bugging him and he said nothing like players do(Estrada for sure was one)but he’s still their best catcher Bar None (William Floyd)
Good news Ryan Walker should be ready to close if needed tonight..
Estrada beats out the double play and gets an RBI.
Good to see him back in the LU
DAMN! Just missed him
Right call he was safe. But real nice relay from Ramos to Fitz to Casali just a fraction late..
Did bailey get the mystery injury?
Uh oh. Bases loaded, no outs.
Missed the hanging slider but got the RBI.
fuck. Martin is all over the place and Contorto pops up the 1st one ne sees.
Sheesh. Freakin’ pop up to the catcher.
Aarrgh.
Fucking brilliant.
Saving grace is that these clowns are the White Sox . . . I suspect that we will have plenty more chances this game. Yeah, it’s frustrating though.
Yep and a Chappy says let’s end this RISP usual scenario with a DP gawd this team is something doing this shit all the time! Ramos nice working the pitcher for the walk and theirs Conforto one pitch up and in pop up so stupid like the Whitesox’s 3B gifting the run E-5..
Geez incredible a fan has caught 2 foul balls in this game? Wild, that’s one more then 3B Vargas could catch..
Say any of you catch Wade’s first at bat that drilled the catcher right in the nuts?
Talk about a NUT SACK Shrinkage, Dudes Family Jewels are in jeopardy..
Haven’t gotten a foul ball in 55 years of games. The kid in front of us at the last Flapapalooza got 2.
Ray got to the 5th before his first HBP or walk.
C Elias Diaz is still available. mlbtr story about his release from Rox says he’s defense first catcher rated highly for framing, and his offensive numbers are below league average but way better than Casali or Reetz. OPS last year .725 this year .693. Plus marks from DRS and OAA.
Casali is on fire. Patrick who?
Yeah good sign since he drilled 2 guys and walked 3 in his last crazy start of 39 pitches and only 2 outs Mac..
Wow what’s up with Casali another hit!
That’s how you do it.
Shock. A bases loaded weak grounder….
1/9 RISP so far:(
We’ve had at least 2 on every inning.
And here we go again.
And there we go again.
Hey! Yaz with the squidly down the line!
Another RISP hit nicely done.
2-10 RISP stop the presses!
Could the Giants challenge the umpires and ask to have no runners on base?
Nice clean save.
Two down, one to go.
Needed win.
wow Walker finishes Sox off in 11 pitches.
+2
1 game behind the Mets
3.5 behind Atlanta
2 up on the Cubs
2.5 up on StL
Such a pleasure to see Ryan Walker mow down the side all strikeouts then Headcase Doval who would have atleast 2 hitters on by now..
+2 over .500 As Ray,Ramos&Casali??? Leading the way! You know Whitesox’s stink when Casali is a star of the game!!
