Tough One
Day game so I missed all of this. Did BoMel disclose in the post game why he yanked Webb at 93? Or why he brought in Bel Biv DeVoe in such a high leverage situation? “that girl is poison”

And another great nickname is born…
Bart, Slater and Manaea must feel like the baseball equivalent of rescue dogs…
Beat writers on Twitter said Webb was on a pitch count due to physical issue.

Miller put the 3 guys on base, walking 2 of first 3 guys he faced. Webb hadn’t walked any ChiSox hitter at all through 8.
I checked B/R and game logs and he’s now walked 7 guys in last 5 appearances over 5 innings of work. For season he averages 5 BBs per 9-only guy on entire staff who is worse is Doval. I wasn’t paying close attention so idk if it was fastball or breaking ball but yikes. It’s effing 9th inning of tie game Giants desperately need-you cannot come in start walking guys into scoring position. Throw strikes!
Doval btw worked 1.2 hitless innings with 0 BBs 2 Ks in 8-5 W over Tacoma last night. 26 pitches 17 strikes. He’s not closing either. Matos (RF) 2-4 drove in 3 runs and homered, Luciano (DH) 2-4 with triple and SB.
Weather listed as 64 and cloudy, sounds typical for Seattle area.
M’s got swept 3 straight in LA scoring 7 runs, losing 8-4 last night. They had 9 game trip to Detroit Pittsburgh and Latrine, and lost 8 of them. Now 5 back of Stros in AL West, and 7.5 down in WC race at 64-64.
Fun fact: Oakland beat the Big Red Machine in the 7 game ’72 WS by scoring a grand total of 16 runs…
Mac, I read the tweet (or whatever X calls these things now-a-days) and there was nothing wrong with his arm. Specifically, “. . . he’s been feeling sick all week (including last start).”
He was lights out yesterday at 93 pitches. I agree with Estes on the post game show – they should have left him in, as the “Giants are in a playoff type situation.”
yes. Melvin seemed to come up ant-small on that decision. Are they trying to snag the last WC spot or not?
Pavs said “physical limitations”, so I stole the physical part of that. Still seems strange though, since he blew thru the 8th on, what, 5 pitches? What if he had thrown 10+ pitches in the 8th, would he have been pulled? If not, then send him back out in the 9th.
Fair point, but Giants had like 2 hits after 4th inning. It was going to take more than 2 runs to win the game and they couldn’t get there. Melvin could have used someone else like Taylor Rogers, but manager always gets heat when guys he brings in blow up. To me it’s on pitchers; when manager is putting you in there with game on the line-put up or shut up. that’s when everybody wants to be in there.
Meanwhile, Brebbia Aisle closed them out yesterday.
Yeah, the question is ‘why Miller’ in suck a high-leverage situation.
In his last 5 outings he’s given up 5 hits, 7 walks, and a home run.
I think the game turns out a little different if the Sox don’t score 4 in the 9th.
And that’s the Miller Hiller Haller hallelujah twist…
A little nostalgia for the older crowd…

Thanks Loo, great stuff. Had to laugh at “quiet bayou magician” to describe Alvin Dark. My mom hated Dark calling him Louisiana prawn. She was hardass, kinda like some fans always calling for guys’ heads. Fav expression of hers was on anybody making mistake was, “Fine him. I’d fine him $50 bucks!”
Latest inescapable word/phrase is “lean into” not that unsustainable has disappeared. How the fuck does this shit start?
I think I’ll lean into taking a crap…
Chron reran old Jenkins column from 10 years ago when Al Attles was getting Lifetime Achievement award. When he first got to NBA from NC A & T in 1960 there were only 8 teams, you played same guys a lot and it was much more physical game. Attles didn’t back down from anyone and fought (and kicked ass on) on couple rugged post players who went after Phila Warriors players.
There were also definite racial quotas per team and St. Louis was still in league then. Owners chafed at having x amount (3 or 4 max) Af Am players on team because they thought fans wouldn’t like it and attendance in their struggling league would suffer at a time franchises were relocating. This persisted even after Warriors moved to SF.
Rick Barry got Warriors into Championship in 2nd season and then bailed to ABA. Second year he’s back here they are again, and under Attles leadership they win it all in dramatic fashion, sweeping Bullets in 4 and Attles getting thown out going onto floor to confront M Riordan. He used unheard of 10 man rotation behind Barry.
By all accounts soft spoken man and teetotaler off the court who never left Warriors organization. What a legend he was. Hope Warriors have some kind of “16” patch for him on whatev unis they play in.
Did they wear one for Nate Thurmond a few years ago?
Still burns me that Giants didn’t think Jim Ray Hart was “patch worthy” but his mid 60’s caddy Davenport was…

Yeah good question. Loved Nate, another fierce defender and rebounder, and he had decent outside shot too. Warriors used to run pick and pop with him and Barry in those days and if you sagged off him Thurmond would nail midrange J. Barry in his second season 66-67 was unstoppable averaging 35 and 9 boards a game.
Yep. Loved loved loved those mid 70s Warriors. Friend of mine had a ball signed by the 75-76 Warriors. Lost to the mists of time. Saw game 2 at the palace of cows cuz they were bumped by the ice capades in the ’75 finals. thriller game.
Saw game 6 vs Phoenix the next season where I thought we were on our way to the finals, going up 3-2. Alas they lost the next 2.
Mariners fire manager Scott Servais due to AL West slide . . . This will be an interesting side note tomorrow.
He was a “good Giant” – so good they acquired him twice 🤦♂️🤦♂️
Not to be confused with the great Scott Service who we only had once…
I don’t remember either one with the Giants.
Servais’ teams won 90 90 and 88 past 3 seasons. For whatever reason they can’t hit (worst Ks in all baseball) and are in tailspin despite having best pitching in all baseball. Park sucks to hit in.
Man maybe this gives M’s much needed boost as they’ve fallen behind Stros in AL West, but Servais didn’t suddenly get stupid. though I’m sure fans been after him for awhile.
Per B/R they’re hitting .216 as a team. 13th AL for runs and worse for slash lines…I mean about only AL team worse are ChiSox. They picked up Arozarena at deadline and in 100 PAs he’s hitting .224 with 1 HR and .714 OPS, which is above league average, but still.
Doval is eligible to be reinstated this weekend, and is in nearby Tacoma with RCs. Line for there in 5 appearances is 5.2 innings 2 hits 2 runs (in first outing) 1 BB 7 Ks.
Raisel Iglesias strikes out the side in 9th and saves ATL 3-2 win over Phils. Duvall homered in 6th for Braves final run. Interesting side note: Urshela and Merrifield, both released earlier and signed by Braves, combined to turn 5-4-3 DP on Trea Turner late game for second night in row
At least they didn’t sign Bryant – what a friggin nightmare that would be…
Big series in SD started last night. Mets scored 3 early ones off dylan Cease. Pads loaded bases against Severino in 5th with 0 outs but only scored 1. Top 9 Pads manager brings in guy just recalled who gives up 7 hits 5 runs vs. 9 batters faced. Pads get 2 back bottom 9 lose 8-3.
Hindsight always being 20/20, bet his presser didn’t go over too well either.
