A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Bring On The Jets

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on September 3, 2024

Sounds like the Trent Williams deal is done. Thank God. And for us on the west coast we need the NFL to start, badly. I hope the Niners have a magic wand because they literally pay everyone everything. Not sure how that’s going to work out next year when Purdy gets his BAG.

One more run at the Super Bowl sounds good enough for me. LFG.

Quick baseball comment before work week commences and our thoughts turn to football this weekend. And as a NY Giants season ticket holder with Daniel Jones back for season 6, my thoughts may be turning to hockey by October (hope I’m wrong).

Turn Out The Lights…The Party’s Over. Week ago commented our baseball warriors needed 20-10 finish to have any shot at wild card, a mere .667 winning %. After desultory week capped by lost weekend vs Marlins, Giants now need 18-6 finish to possibly sneak into playoffs, a mere .750 winning %.

And today begins 7 consecutive series against teams destined to make playoffs (with possible exception of Royals). Giants finishing 18-6 as likely as me swimming across English Channel. No wonder Flavor led with football today.

Real question is what change in management if any happens at end of season. We’ve all speculated about it and many of us – myself despite being an early and consistent supporter of Farhan Zaidi included – have concluded that change is necessary. 6 years of listless baseball on multiple levels is enough. It’s not that Zaidi, Putila and others haven’t had a plan. It’s simply that the plan is not working.

It’s not that there haven’t been positives this year – Ramos, Fitzgerald, gradual youth movement. But that’s end of year conversation. For now, the gap between the Giants and the elite teams is real.

Saw Giants have averaged 33,750 paid attendance per game this year. Is that enough for ownership to bring back Zaidi, Putila, Melvin et. al.? I would like baseball to have real meaning again in September but at present that’s a pipe dream.

Melvin has to be given a real run with a new GM. The money was spent this year so I don’t necessarily see an ownership issue and they have pursued every big name free agent seems like for a decade now. Only way we land probably big time free agents is to have what looks like a team of the future. We keep pursuing every slugger available and I have been arguing for last 3-4 years that what we need to build a speedy team that excels at getting on base, takin he bases, moving runners over and manufacturing runs and not the steroid era mindset of just knocking the ball over the fence.

I’m going to assume Chapman and Snell both take their options and that $50 mill that we will save needs to go into better long term options. Arozerana May be the type of player to take a gamble on with Lee Ramos and Matos to build around.

one more run with this offense. Purdy stays healthy no reason we don’t get to an nfc champ game. If he has just an ok year, maybe we dont have to break the bank this year. The person I think we have to see being way more dominant this year is Bosa or that is the first stop of saving money…

Leonard Floyd is a VERY VERY big part of how this defense performs. Hargrave needs more consistency as well. If the defense can get solid pressure and sacks from the left side, teams will not be successful passing on us.

I’m leery of this defense given what I saw in the preseason, but we didn’t play most of the starters.

My issue, just like last year, was where the LBs were lining up. They were too deep to stop the run and were ineffective at covering intermediate passes. And the usual abject ineffectiveness in stopping screen passes on 3rd and long. TEs off the edge or out of the backfield completely uncovered. Basic stuff.

I know they play it vanilla. But stopping that shit isn’t tipping our hand. Chalk it up to being plain, but I thought with Staley, this defense would be MUCH more aggressive. This defense was in lay-back mode all preseason. I hate that shit.

GH, like I said, once all the opt-outs opt out, our payroll will be down near the middle of the pack and we will once again be a swiss-cheese roster. They spent money, sure, but how they spent it is was and will be the wrong way to build team. I’ve been saying for 2 years now that you can’t build a roster with all these opt outs.

A few years ago I thought they were doing it as they weeded out the old guys. They’ve signed ONE GUY, Lee, to a long term deal in 6 years of Farhan. And he was a total shot in the dark.

Going forward yeah, it would be great if they built the team around guys like McCray and Lee. I can even live with Encarnacion. At this point HE should be the hitting instructor as he is the ONLY one who seems to understand not trying to pull every fucking pitch you see. Even Fitz is fine as a speedy hitter type wh has some power.

Fucking DO IT. This dicking around with Cotorto, La Stella, Haniger, Ahmed types is a joke.

Sabes got lucky with guys like Scutaro, Ross, Burrell, Huff, Morse, and even Theriot and Glasschez but Farhan has been shooting blanks trying to recreate that.

Thanks for that Eddie Matthews pull yesterday, Loo.

I guess there might be some other pitchers besides Roberts who pitched against the Braves in all 3 cities, but I think Eddie Matthews is the only player to play for the Braves in all 3.

Yeah that was cool. I looked up Casey Stengel, and turns out he managed 3 NYC teams, Brooklyn in 1930s plus Yanks and Mets. He also played for Brooklyn early 1910s and for NY Giants near end of his playing days early 1920s.

It will be interesting to see if the Giants can compete with the Dbacks, who are a scoring machine. Giving up 2 of 3 at home with big crowds to the moribund Marlins doesn’t bode well. Maybe they can take one of 3 somehow. Good that College and NFL football is gearing up — SF Giants are just boring ass now, playing spoiler to run out the string. Play young players, let’s see about them. Who cares about Conforto, Yaz, Canha — please…

As always, most of the Flap is way ahead of the Facebook wives, never say die fans, and the media . . . To wit, even Pavlovic and NBC Sports Bay Area got the memo:

      https://www.nbcsportsbayarea.com/mlb/san-francisco-giants/ryan-walker-kyle-harrison-marco-luciano-2025-season/1777017/

      • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on September 3, 2024 at 3:38 pm

        Pavlovic should be a Flapper.

The Matos slash line in August at a .303/.368/.535 is glaring reason to have him play these last 25 games at SF. Conforto, Yaz — one or both won’t be here next year, hopefully. We all know what they can do. Matos slashing away in Sac and not getting another 75-100 MLB at bats is just asinine, regardless if he isn’t the greatest glove out there…

    • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on September 3, 2024 at 3:50 pm

Yeah, maybe snarkk, but even Pavlovic is sometimes weeks late versus the Flap, albeit, I understand he will take heat from his bosses at NBC, and particularly, the Giants for not “toeing the company line.”

As many of us have pointed out, why can’t we have at least one freaking reporter that attempts to be a shit disturber? Mac and Loo can correct me if I am wrong, but this doesn’t seem to be an issue in Philadelphia, New York, and Boston.

Ludicrous they didn’t call them up unless they will simply be DFAed.

So, Farhan is waiving the white flag, I guess. Matos and Luciano up. Let them play, come what may. This season is done. Meanwhile, I still don’t get Thairo. He’s had a bad season, but I wonder if he’s just been hurt all year. Tossing him down to Sac is likely not a cool move with the team. How the Giants can be 5+ years into Luciano’s development and they haven’t yet figured out what to do with him. — where to play him — is beyond my comprehension…

      • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on September 3, 2024 at 4:00 pm

Yes, this is capitulation by the organization. Now, I want to see if Zaidi has the balls to make a statement about the current state of the Giants franchise . . . tick tock tick tock

      • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on September 3, 2024 at 4:05 pm

        I doubt he’ll make a mea culpa.

Anyway, putting Thairo on waivers basically has destroyed any value he might have had in a trade. If they were soured on him, why not trade him earlier in the season? Farhan is good at making moves to destroy the value of the asset, even if it isn’t much to begin with.

While griping about Giants today, one more simmering log to throw on fire. Driving home Sunday caught last couple innings of Giants – Marlins on Sirius. Purposely listened to post-game wrap to see if anyone from Kuip, Kruk, Miller or Flemming would dare critique Giants.

Instead heard typical tiptoeing around Giants malaise wherein Kuip pivoted to “needing to take day off” Monday to recover from weekend followed by laughter and admission Giants weren’t playing on Labor Day. After commercial break they went straight to picking players of game and offering standard “Good Pick” platitudes to each other.

I recognize who pays their checks but some occasional harsh critique of Giants would be much preferred to finding four Giants worthy of being singled out after 7-5 loss to team 35 games BELOW .500. Post-game wrap mirrors current state of team: in need of refresh.

Pavs echoed same things Brisbee said in TA last Friday, and I mentioned 2 of them here–let Luciano play and hit and get more guys involved in pen to save the overworked. Not rocket science. I’d still move Doval in off season. Last outing with giants down a run after Webb left he gave up hit and walk to first 2 batters and cost team an insurance run. Same old same old, not OK.

He also said they should let McCray hit off LHP. He’s striking out 44% of his ABs per fangraphs but he’s only had 56 PAs and plays awesome CF. Encarnacion is in lineup tonight, someone I’d like to see more of. He does use RF a lot.

It didn’t matter after Chapman K and Wade grounder, but did anyone notice that Fitzgerald was on 2nd and did not go to 3rd on a single by Ramos to right field. How does that happen??

    • alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 said, on September 3, 2024 at 7:23 pm

Actually Ramos hit a line drive sac fly Mrsprtdude so Fitz had to hold at 2nd..

Play at the plate on Matos throw was a good throw right at the plate, the error should of been on Bailey not catching it.He catches it and their was a chance for the out
