Chappy Inked
Unlike many of you who thought he would leave I thought he would stay. And I’m glad he is. Chappy signed a 151 million dollar 6 year deal last night. And while that contract is definitely going to have a bit of a “Longo” feel to it on the back end, Chappy is great piece to build around. And we can’t have shitty boring players at every position forever, right?
Happy to have him on board going forward.
Flav, I agree with you 100% on this and glad they got it done early.
On balance I like 6 year contract for Chapman too. Great glove, decent bat, solid fundamentals and very steady presence in clubhouse. At 31, I question Chapman’s ongoing value in years 4-6 of contract but recognize ability to retain Chapman and keep him off free agent market required 5 or 6 year deal.
However, on flip side this signing in early September also strikes me as Farhan Zaidi’s effort to shift attention away from dismal end to season and attempt to preempt his own possible dismissal at end of season. It also strikes me as signal ownership in line with Zaidi on early planning for 2025.
I am more convinced every week that a substantive change in baseball operations starting with Zaidi and Putila is desperately needed as this ship continues to list and leak. Like others, I think Kim Ng would be great hire. Last night’s Chapman signing, while positive on its own merits, convinces me change at the top is more unlikely when season ends.
It’s obvious the Z experiment hasn’t panned out. I am hoping they shitcan the majority of the FO and most importantly those in charge of player development at the minor league level. And the scouting dept. It’s probably going to take a few years to get out of this mess might as well do it with a revamped FO.
Smart move glad to see it.
There has to be a reason why it’s $151M and not $150M. Seriously…
Loo.. they gave him a 1M signing bonus then it’s 150M for 6 years at 25M every year with a no trade opts..
I think that is the $1 mil signing bonus for 2025.
Thank God for that bonus. Now he’ll be able to afford cheese on his quarter pounder…
I think he could go all out and get the double pounder with cheese. Plus, it’s called a double pounder.
..
Lulz Loo.Yeah I’m sure if he’s really hungry Chappy could afford to upgrade to a 3×3 In&Out burger 🍔 with animal fries with extra cheese..
So I guess his right arm is still strong 💪🏾 signing for that million dollar 💵 bonus check after his physical! Oh shit physical? Shades of Correa setting in ..
Glad this happened-I said make him an offer he can’t refuse and they did. He wanted to be here and got deal he (and Boras apparently) likes, exploding few myths. Now onto other issues.
Getaway day early game, and I noticed M’s are in Oaktown to play at 12:30 today per MLB travel rules. Next season this game would be in Sac…where it’s supposed to be 104 today, and of course that game will be played on turf.
Chapman I’m sure didn’t want to end up with that fiasco of signing late again, he gets his 25M per season and all of the drama of the offseason F/A BS of waiting for others to sign I’m sure played into his decision.A solid signing for a team that had no replacement at 3rd anyway. He’s a multiple GG and Platinum fielder and plays everyday. His bat speed is still impressive along with his power.Just the opposite of what à washed up and older Longo ever offered.
Yeah first 3 years of the deal should be his best years but he’s still an overall baller where this team has many holes to fill. With Chapman it’s filled .I was stunned how fast he is with 13 steals, career high.Plus he loves the Bay Area and team so that counts a lot!
He can still have Matt Williams around at 3r base coach, but everyone else gone please!Zshit his puppet Melvin,Price,Burrell, Putila and others hit the road Jack don’t need you here no more no more, no more, no more..
Funny how Ironman Chapman took the night off as Melvin would only say he was due for a game off? Then immediately after that crap in his usual dribble postgame they sign him?
From what I read he was doing the physical for the contract signing.
We got lucky Chapman wanted to be here. This is definitely a discount, as Boras almost never does extensions during the season. Boras was no doubt salivating about Chapman’s upcoming free agency. Particularly so, since Boras also represents the only other decent 3rd baseman that’s a free agent next season (Bregman). The contract itself is the norm now-a-days, as long as Chapman performs the first 2-3 years of the contract – were golden.
Anyway, I have to grudgingly admit that Zaidi did a good job signing Chapman . . . and probably saved his job while doing so.
Well that’s just it isn’t Blade the weasel is just tying to save his bacon getting Chapman on board, and sadly with this FO it will probably work along with brain dead Melvin since they still both have 1year left on their regrettable contracts..
So get ready for the off-season smoke&Mirrors lip service when it comes to Juan Soto.:Well we were right there offering more then any one else but…..
Maybe it’s just me, but I think the priority needs to be Snell . . . or, Zaidi’s so called “best pitching staff in baseball” will continue to go down the drain.
Matos took a BB last night and made nice catch of deep ball to RF, couple baby steps on good side. McCray (like other young guys) is just gonna have to learn hard way about ML pitching and what he chooses to swing at. Let him get his ABs and don’t hit for him as Brisbee said in TA.
Birds faced 18 guys, gave up 3 hits and 5 walks including first 2 to open game and put Giants in early hole, unacceptable. Doval more problems with cutter/sinker getting hit and walking guys, again, not anything new.
Staying out of the argument over who manager and FO are. But as Dean said yesterday I do think there are encouraging signs in development of young position players.
Huh. Color me surprised. I guess Chappie really does like it here.
He’ll be 32 next year so there’s that, but hey, we actually signed a guy. Just hope this isn’t Longo 2.0.
2 in 6 years of trying.
Huzzah. Give Farhan a medal.
Sign Soto and we are getting somewhere.
Wondering what we should do with Estrada? He is batting .429 in 23 PA with Sac (HR, 2DB, 4RBI).
Time for Estrada to go as a potential starter. Lots of data that shows he can’t hit. On any other team that sees itself as a playoff contender he would be a defensive replacement / role player only.
Wade is the similar. He is 30 years old. I like him, but if he didn’t earn the Late Night Lamont moniker in 21 would anyone be saying this guy is a good enough hitter to play 1st on a good to very good team?
He is not a bad player, but if you extrapolate his full season numbers he hits .260 with 12 homers. Yes he walks a lot, but isn’t fast, and is hurt all the time having only 1 season ever with 500ABs. Lets get someone better, and have Wade be a backup:)
Agree 100% that first base is a “power” position and Wade is a nice player, but frankly, we need an upgrade there. It’s unfortunate that he really can’t play any other position. So, IMO, back up is out . . . Consequently, we should make every effort to trade him, while upgrading first base with a power hitter. I discussed this a few weeks ago . . . We should try to sign soon to be free agent, Pete Alonso. I love the fact that he is a right handed hitter too.
Alonso, Soto, and Snell should be the priorities next season if we are serious about making a run for the World Series.
Absolutely, Alonso way over Late Night. Forget Soto whose deal will be Ohtani-like with Yankee-Met bidding war looming…
You and Mac know NY more than I do . . . If that’s the case with Soto, Zaidi or whomever the fuck is in charge during the Hot Stove season, should just fake going after Soto (as I am almost certain Zaidi does this every season, e.g., Harper, Stanton, Ohtani, etc.) and sweep in for Alonso.
However, the issue every year with Zaidi is that he almost always waits until January or later to make a move. Fuck that noise. Have something done by the Winter meetings or during the meetings. Usually only “crumbs” are available after January 1st.
I like the Chapman signing. $ per year is OK for a guy with those skills.
I don’t like 6 years, but that extra year was probably the cost of getting it done.
If the signing is the move that saves Farhan from getting canned, then I like it a lot less. This team looks like it will end the season well under .500; so if another year of this FO is a reward for that failure — that’s lame to me and counter to a pretty massively pissed off fanbase…
Watching Brewers last week was eye opening. they do play in HR friendly yard as Loo had mentioned where Posey liked to hit. chapman homered just to right of dead CF and McCray and Yaz also homered in game Giants won 5-4. Next 2 games they held Giants to 3 runs total.
Their pitching is 2nd best NL for ERA and runs allowed despite park factor. they lost ace Corbin Burnes in off season, and let manager Craig Counsell walk to join Cubs. Yet they are still on pace to win 90+ games and not let lot of runs in.
This has to be short term goal of Giants–pitch better everywhere, not just at home where they are 39-32 plus 10 run diff. On road Giants are -33 for runs allowed and -11 in win/loss record.
How many throws did Luciano miss last night? I lost count. A healthy Thairo would’ve made a difference this year. He’s only 28. 2022 & 23 ops reached low .700 range. But when right, he crushes middle in mistakes to LF. Not the worst guy to have toward the bottom of the LU. I understand BassB’s interest in his situation.
This September surprise beats the hell out of last year’s. I’ve always liked Chapman, but seeing him on a daily basis has been revelatory. His signing upends much armchair surmise, too. Snell’s not impossible now. Unlikely? Yeah. Still, Z’s ready to spend money again.
Just listening to Zaidi here, tells me intuitively that HIM AND MELVIN are not going anywhere (see 1.36-1.39 of this clip), i.e., were stuck with both until the end of 2025 at least.

I think Chapman would not have done this if did not have some assurance that Melvin would be there at least through next season. After listening to Farhan for most of this, I felt like I needed a baseball barf bag. Long, very long on words, short on results, that is his MO. I guess Chapman spoke at some point, but not on this video…
https://x.com/NBCSGiants/status/1831758950003601862
Yep, Melvin’s here to stay.
idk about Alonso…numbers (per Fangraphs) seem to be on downward trend since 2022. Not hitting 40- 46 bombs any more. More Ks (as many already as last year which were 20 more than previous 2 years), more groundballs, fewer barrels, slugging pct. down 50 points from 2 years ago.
He’s at $20 mil right now–by back end of next deal, 4 yrs at $100 mil+ ?– he might only be DH next to Eldridge. Giants might see Eldridge next year, hopefully by 2026 at latest.
Unca might be interested in this . . . https://www.cnbc.com/2024/09/05/official-nfl-team-valuations-2024.html
Las Vegas move really benefited the Raiders. I guess it follows that the same thing will happen with the A’s eventually???
To xoot’s point, Thairo likely stops that errant throw as opposed to Wisely and his ole BS. Fitz had better shot at 3b than 2b.
Feel bad for Estrada, excellent glove and range 2b who just had nightmare season with injuries and at plate
If they want to be serious contenders they should sign Soto and Kim. Fitz plays short. Sign Snell. Ray? Meh. Sure. He can stay on his opt-in and eaern a deal next year.
Fuck these Wade types. Keep Estrada as the backup. Yaz can stay. Cotorto can fold up and blow in the wind. Canha? CanNo. Wisely? Not wisley to keep him. Doval can go.
Harrison and Birdie need to get with the conditioning program. As does Bailey. these guys are pooped out in July? In SF? If they played in Chicago in the summer, they’d all be dead. Come on, man. Yeah, it’s a grind. But players 50 years ago played more innings, pitched a fuck of a lot more, and held their shit together better than most guys not named Webb.
If the Rangers, Doggers, Yanks, and Boston can spend a billion dollars and sign whoever the fuck they want, we should be able to.
It’s simply a matter of the front office nutting up.
I missed the first inning, why was Snell removed?
Due to error behind him and passed ball on strike 3 with sacks loaded, took him 42 pitches to get out of inning.
Thanks Willie. Still, 42 pitches for Snell is an early night.
Yeah, no reason to stretch Snell.
There’s a perfect example of a wasted AB by Yaz. They are pitching him away away away. instead of trying to slap one down the line, where the 3rd baseman is 25′ from the line, he waits for an inside pitch that he never gets, and strikes out looking.
True, but McCray was on 2b with 0 outs and all 3 guys after him had chance to drive him in. Wisely and his “productive out” being one of them.
That doesn’t mean Yaz didn’t fuck up, Willie. At least McCray hit the ball.
Agreed, but my point is they all did, not just Yaz the only one you called out.
Double pounder WITH cheese.
Aaaaand the Wade K.
Aaaaand the Fitz K.
Aaaaand the dead quail!!! Bailey flexing his muscle.
Bailey adding a couple of fries to that happy meal.
It seems to me that Ramos had better ABs when he wasn’t swinging at the first pitch.
Estrada has a career OPS of .694 in over 1500 ABs
He plays very good D. I’d be ok if her were hitting 8th or 9th in an otherwise good lineup. Not on this team. Good D is great when other guys make up for the lack of hitting. If we get a very good 1B then he can stay:)
2nd time in 4 starts Snell has been very bad. Maybe he is getting cheaper again:)
.242
.272
.231
.248
.264
.297
.231
.228
.241
Our hitters:(
Fitz should be lead off, Yaz 6th imo
sorry . 264 twice:(
Abracadabra!
There’s the trouble with Chapman.
Dude Ks a ton, a lot with RISP…
Giants now 1/13 with RISP today.
In other words, the usual. Need better players. End of story.
As I indicated here – Chapman’s more confused than a fart in a fan factory.
https://x.com/NBCSGiants/status/1831777411807244684
Giants have the “beginning” of a champ team?
Well, they are a MLB franchise. That’s a “beginning”…
Yeah, he must be smokin’ some good Thai sticks
Ballgame!
Weiner Weiner!
Bailey with the win.
A steal success by Fitz.
Then Bailey with a hit with RISP to win. What a sensation !
Great Pen performance by SF, too.
Way to go Bailey, hopefully more to come the rest of Sept.
Behind a paywall which I removed – David Schoenfield, ESPN Senior Writer evaluation of the Chapman signing (letter grade of B). You guys should be able to read it.
https://archive.ph/20240905140608/https://www.espn.com/mlb/insider/story/_/id/41133677/mlb-2024-free-agency-grades-san-francisco-giants-matt-chapman-151-million-contract-extension
Schoenfield is usually a Giants hater, so him giving them a “B” for this deal is probably a good sign. I hope Chapman can keep his K rate down over the life of the deal, his high K rate has been a career-long thing keeping him from being a really top player…
That was substantive analysis of Chapman deal. Also watched Zaidi/Melvin/Chapman press conference you posted. I’m unmoved from comment this morning that I do like Chapman signing but don’t like ancillary signals that Zaidi & Putilla entrenched for at least another year.
Frankly leaving front office unchanged during offseason leaves me empty. I harbored more hope 24 hours ago that senior management upheaval was possibility than I do today.
If anything, it shows that the fucking front office is willing to do more than these fucking one-year opt-outs. Can I get a fuckity fuck?
Like I said, get Soto and Kim, and we’ll be on to something. Get OTS as well.
They have a better chance of signing Mario Soto, Chuck. Juan ain’t leaving NY with the slightly possible exception of the Dodgers and their bottomless money pit.
Speaking of Dominican players named Juan, who remembers the name of Marichal’s son-in-law?
Loved Mario Soto.
Correct Kat. And Rijo had more wins than Soto (116-100). Soto was basically washed up at 29…
They have to overpay.
I think his name is Jose Rijo? The Reds pitcher who pitched great against the A’s in the W/S.1990???
⬆⬆⬆
Whoa Bobby Bell was monster pro and tremendous overall athlete.
U of Minnesota guy. Worked for years with older woman from there, with great Fargo like accent. “Yah!”
Signing Chap, as most agree here, was a good signing. While Chap’s Melvin/Williams connection seems important, I don’t buy it that this signing saves Z’s job. Um, that IS his job, to sign players that will help the club, something he completely whiffed at the trade deadline. He should still go.
As for other signings, I’d be shocked if Snell stays, and Soto is likely out of reach. There are “lower level” possibilities, and a younger OFer with speed and power would be key… just likely not Soto…
A terrible decision by all involved…a 240 hitter will get them to nowhere. They need better ave hitter, not home run hitter. just terrible.
Glad you said it. I don’t love it either…
I don’t *love it*, but I view it as a good move just because many of us have been clamoring for set position players instead of the plug-n-play of platooning of the recent past, and this pretty much locks in a key position for awhile. Giants have no one in the wings (Schmitt? right…) at that position, and Chapman is one of the best in baseball at that position, so they wouldn’t likely find a better option. This team has a few other key holes that must be filled; now 3rd base is not one of them. For that reason alone, I like the signing. As always, time will tell…
I don’t think it’s great but it proves that they can actually sign someone to a big deal. Perception means something across the league. Not that it’ll convince Snell or Soto to sign. but it doesn’t hurt.
I mean, yeah, he’s gonna be 32 next year, but we’ve signed like 5 guys to 5 year deals in the past 25 years.
As odd ball would say :What’s with the negative waves Moriarty?
Chapman is top 10 in baseball in WAR at 6.0 he gets the job done. Yeah he’s not going to hit for average, 250 at best and K’d a lot but he’s clutch in a lot of situations where the rest of the team struggles. And his glove will always be good with GG and platinum awards and he’s a team leader in the clubhouse even coming up with his referee out fit and whistle after a win, to let a teammate are himself shoot bricks if they had the key hit.But that tells you he’s all in with this team.,
Turns 32 in April.
Here’s a few things he’s done exactly once in his career:
Batted over .249
Drove in over 80 runs
Hit over 30 HRs
Had over 150 hits
Hit more than 3 triples
Stole over 4 bases
Made an All-Star team
Here’s something he’s done every year:
Had a K to BB ratio over 2:1
Eventual Flap nickname: Crappy
lol! Happy happy crappy Chappie.
Late to the party . . . Lovin’ it Loo 🙂
Give ’em hell!
Daniel wound me up…
