A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Loss Blackout

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on September 16, 2024

Times are tough in the Bay Area these days if you’re a sports fan. We no longer celebrate wins for the Giants, only if they score runs. And that Niner game, man, the thing that sucks ass about football is you gotta wait a week to get that shit feeling out of your mouth. Purdy looked like he was almost trying to throw into double coverage every play. And Aiyuk? LOL. Dude wants to be paid like Lamb and Jefferson who are streaking all over the field with the ball and he’s a goddamn fucking ghost.

Niners fans can be odd lot, rarely thrilled even with Ws, and in full blown fire everyone mode on the Ls. Predictions I saw said they are gonna lose 5 maybe 6 games over course of season. so sometimes shit happens, as it did last year when they got as far you can go before losing SB in OT. But I think there are 30 teams that would take Shanahan in a minute if he left the building.

Giving up 97 yd TD (Odum and Brown again hmmnn) skewed the yards gained against vs. new DC and his group. No matter what play is called you have to block for it to be successful, per Hank Stram. Big difference btw 2 teams on 3rd downs.

One play I’m not in favor of is quick out to sideline. QB has to throw the ball before he can read the D, and too often this play gets blown up completely and turns into loss or worse. Guys just throw ball out there and if they had another second they could see it wasn’t going to work for one reason or another.

WR bubble screens and shit like that are fine. But NOT on the fucking 1 yard line!! Jesus. And not on a 1-step drop. Jet sweep? Sure. Those worked all the time for the Niners. So naturally we didn’t do them.

Minnesota is getting in EVERY play and the pass to Deebo was on a 1-step drop. With 11 guys on the line.

      This is utter stupidity.

Shanahan never changed his protection schemes all game. We never blitzed. Howe do you deal with immobile QBs? Blitz them!!! 2nd and 9 on the 2 and going soft is giving the opponent time to throw.

If this is how we scheme our defense for the rest of the year, we are done. This wil be a wasted season.

  2. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on September 16, 2024 at 7:22 am

Losing is part of the game. How you lose matters. The defense is simply playing on their heels. No one anywhere is talking about how soft they are playing. 7 of 12 3rd down conversions is horrible.

Well, actually Aikman mentioned it on the TD drive for the Jets as NY converted three 3rd and longs in a row. They are playing a soft cover zone.

I said it after the first preseason game. They are not attacking. They have their best defensive backfield in YEARS, yet they are forced to cover too long as the base 4 man rush doesn’t win enough.

Throw in a couple miscommunicated coverages and that’s how Minn scored their 2 TDs.

Shanahan was the one who stopped our run game. We have so many playmakers on defense and they gave up 400+ yards. Our scheme isn’t gonna work.

    • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on September 16, 2024 at 8:15 am

taking the “how you lose matters” more specifically, on minn last drive they had no Jefferson, Jones and already were missing hockenson and Addison. Sam fucking Darnold leading the way. So essentially it was a bunch of scrubs going against the Niner D that HAD to have a stop. And look how that went down. Shitty loss.

      • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on September 16, 2024 at 2:15 pm

Their backup RB Chandler had 82 yards. We were beat by 2nd stringers everywhere.

  3. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on September 16, 2024 at 8:20 am

Yep. The easiest way to lose to any NFL quarterback is to give him time to throw. Tom Brady was very good at making middling WRs look good because he could put the ball right on them. But give a QB 5 seconds to throw and he’ll hit 3rd stringers all day. Mainly because most of the passes were underneath our soft zone.

Minn sent 5 guys on something like 60% of our offensive plays. They gave up some runs doing it, but harassed Purdy EVERY pass play.

I’ve been worried about this defense since after watching the first preseason game.

That is a pretty interesting story about Posey dealing directly with Chapman while Zaidi played mumbly peg with Boras.

    • xoot's avatar xoot said, on September 16, 2024 at 8:57 am

Zaidi may be on his way out.

    • willedav's avatar willedav said, on September 16, 2024 at 10:21 am

Yeah that was good. Glad Baggs put that out there, and yes Zaidi’s days do seem numbered. as one of commenters I saw somewhere said, Posey as owner is guy Z and others in FO work for, so he’s not taking that gig (POBO) himself. Doesn’t rule him out as having say in who is in FO going forward and what direction they take.

  5. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on September 16, 2024 at 8:53 am

I found this short story on the Posey thing.

If true, where a minor owner is negotiating a major player deal with the biggest agent in the game, that says volumes about the status of the titled president of baseball ops. Posey probably doesn’t want to be GM, that could eventually F up his legacy, but he can obviously exert meaningful guidance. He should step up to do more. The Giants organization is obviously adrift…

    https://www.msn.com/en-us/sports/mlb/matt-chapman-extension-buster-posey-reportedly-negotiated-deal-for-giants-not-top-boss-farhan-zaidi/ar-AA1qEPPh

  6. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on September 16, 2024 at 9:41 am

I don’t see how Posey being a GM screws with his playing legacy. Dwight Clark was a shitty GM but no one really held that against him. He and Carmey policy fucked over the Browns for about 5 seasons.

I don’t think Posey wants to devote that much time to the job, but who knows. He may have aspirations of becoming a GM.

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on September 16, 2024 at 10:45 am

I meant that Posey may not want to be GM, because if he F’s it up, that could tarnish his playing legacy. Besides, no guarantee a great catcher is going to be a great GM.

I’d like to know how/who spilled the info that Posey was the negotiator, not Farhan. That’s pretty special info so it’s gotta be sourced from somewhere inside the TOP of the organization — not a good sign for Farhan, since he certainly couldn’t be the one to have sourced it to publicly undermine his own perceived authority…

      • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on September 16, 2024 at 2:01 pm

That was my whole point. Dwight Clark sucked as a GM and it didn’t hurt his playing legacy at all.

    • xoot's avatar xoot said, on September 16, 2024 at 12:05 pm

Baggarly helpfully described his inside sources.

    • willedav's avatar willedav said, on September 16, 2024 at 12:32 pm

Posey does have advantage as part owner in dealing directly with Chapman and bypassing Boras. Right or wrong Baggs story right away says owners were OK with deal on top of all the $$ they spent last year and instead of playing waiting game Chapman was up for it and signed.

Seriously doubt Posey has any interest in all the daily duties up and down entire system being the GM would entail. But column makes clear he’s unhappy with results post 2021 and decided to take things into his own hands. Good for him. Now they can go about solving all other issues.

      • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on September 16, 2024 at 1:49 pm

The money they spent last year was a mirage. The only long-term deal of the bunch was dealt away.

If Ray does not opt out after this season (and why would he?) he is owed $25 million each of next 2 years. Not a mirage–$50 million. He made 7 starts this year and pitched total of 30 innings for ERA of 4.70.

Shanahan should just coach and relinquish his role with his dual role as HC/OC the league has figured him out.He had Klint Kubiak(Gary Kubiak’s son)on his staff a year ago and let him get away, probably felt threatened, now he’s OC with the Saints who are the talk of the NFL scoring 91 points in 2 games and blowing out Cowgirls in their house 44-19.Derek Carr ( who’s been a whipping boy for years then again playing for the Raiders will do that to you) has been incredible under Klint Kubiak ( 33?) throwing 4TD’s over 50 yards( Shaheed&Olave)as the Saints are turning into the latest version of the greatest show on Turf and RB Kamara is going crazy this year as he went for 4 TD’s 115 yards rushing 3TD’s and a 65 yard screen pass for another. Actually their new nickname is called Carr di gras ,I like it for this electric offense..

    • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on September 16, 2024 at 1:53 pm

Losing Slowik to Houston and McDaniel to Miami has hurt this offense.

The defense? They sorely miss DeMecco Ryans. Utter waste of talent if they keep playing this way.

Don’t like how this season has started.

Classic Doval: drilling the guy with the throw after he’s already standing on the base, and has his back turned. The guy just slumped to the ground after being drilled, like “What the BLEEP, dude?!” OK, I laughed. I’m not proud of it. OK, I hit the rewind button twice and laughed each time again. I’m not proud of it.

I had recorded the Niner game, and was going to watch it later, but after I’d heard they lost, I just deleted it. I just didn’t have the will to watch a bleh Niner game. So I watched Indy and Dallas in a WNBA game, and it was very exciting. Indy won by 1 point. Clark had a career high 35 points. At some point, Clark set the season assist record for the WNBA. If A’ja Wilson wasn’t having such a remarkable season, Clark would be a serious MVP candidate. She’ll win Rookie of the Year easily. Reese was the only other one with any chance to win ROY, but her season ended early with a hairline fracture in her wrist. The WNBA women get beat up in their league. Because the play isn’t above the rim, like the men, there is a LOT of contact going for rebounds in the WNBA.

    • Winder's avatar Winder said, on September 16, 2024 at 1:00 pm

zumiee- thanks for the posts you made my laugh. Doval had a purpose.

  12. zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on September 16, 2024 at 12:49 pm

Indy will play Connecticut in the first round of the WNBA playoffs. One of the starters for Indy is in a relationship with one of the starters for Connecticut. Well, that’s a pretty unique situation. We’ve seen men have to play against their brothers before. And the Harbaughs coaching against each other in the Super Bowl was very unique.

  13. Locojuan's avatar Locojuan said, on September 16, 2024 at 12:56 pm

From the Baggs article, – “It was an ownership group that viewed re-signing Chapman as a slam dunk — and did not trust Zaidi and Boras to finish at the rim.”

    • Locojuan's avatar Locojuan said, on September 16, 2024 at 1:00 pm

Also from the article – “Posey’s direct involvement in the Chapman negotiations is the latest signal that the former franchise icon will play an active role in the Giants’ foundational decisions going forward. So it’ll be hard to imagine that Zaidi would continue in his current role if he and Posey do not align often enough on organizational priorities or if they are not able to bridge any difference in their baseball sensibilities.”

  14. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on September 16, 2024 at 1:51 pm

Yeah Farhan is gone. There is no way he has any pull in the org if they are bypassing him in negotiations.

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on September 16, 2024 at 1:59 pm

If so, they better fire him the day after the Giants season is over, and anybody else in the FO associated with him. Get the new GM in with his / her people ASAP, so can get the re-tooling going, including the scouting. Ownership better have already scoured the landscape for who they think are the top GM candidates, maybe even already made some discrete feelers…

  15. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on September 16, 2024 at 2:13 pm

Maybe Posey can convince these bean-fuckers to actually spend. I mean saying they spent money last year is bullshit. They spent most of their money on one-year opt-out deals that more than likely will result in opt-outs. Chappie be damned.

Unless they REALLY spend money on long-term deals. Break the bank on Soto. Get Kim. Keep Snell. Will we have to overpay? Sure. I’ve spent enough money in my lifetime on this team.

Time for them to nut up or shut up.

Which is the bigger toilet SF or NY?

    • willedav's avatar willedav said, on September 16, 2024 at 3:29 pm

Like Ohtani, no reason on earth for Soto to even consider Giants and I doubt Snell would either. I like HS Kim, but he’s not a panacea for fixing the offense. He’s hitting .233 and hasn’t played in a month due to injury. Slash line .233/.330/.370. 11 HRs 22 SBs (7 CS). Highest BA in 4 year career is .260 with barely above league average OPS. Stole 38 bags last year but that was outlier season of career so far offensively.

You can’t FA your way into contention especially for hitters at the O, has to come from within.

      • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on September 16, 2024 at 7:59 pm

Fine, we’ll just do the usual and jack up tge price for other teams to pay to get stars. Why even try. Amirite?

We’ll just sink further down into A’s territory and field a .490 team for the next 10 years while Farhan puts his 15 year plan in place.

        Come on, man.

Last year Niners lost 3 in a row, in week 8. And made it to SB. Lions Ravens (0-2) Cowboys and Rams (also 0-2) also lost, and Rams just lost Kupp. the sky ain’t falling in on SF in September.

If I’m going to throw a big contact at a SS I would rather have Brewers SS Willy Adames over Kim.Much better hitter with 32 ( 24/31 the previous 2 seasons and even more durable)bombs this year and 108 RBI’s and his glove is solid as well. He’s hit 150 HR’s compared to 47 for Kim and their the same age 29.. Move Fitzgerald over to 2nd and pray he can field better.

Z is definitely gone. And yeah, the day after the season ends. Owners watched him do NOTHING at the trade deadline, and then Z’s proclaimed best rotation in baseball — which was his last hope for something good to happen — faded to black. Potentially exciting September baseball turned into having to watch starting lineups full of mediocrity (Wisely, Canha, Walton, ugh). Doubt Buster would want to be GM, but that lofty title that Z currently holds might seem compatible with Buster’s ownership role.
