A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Detroit!

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on September 20, 2024

Was talking to my dad yesterday and he was like “what’s all this Tigers stuff?” So I get that Tigers mania probably isn’t going to take off at the blog. But I still think it’s cool. Dead locked with the Twins with 9 to play.

Hey, it’s something to follow at least. And I am definitely rooting for them. They’re gonna have their hands full with Baltimore but yet, why not?

Tigers, storied old-timey team, it’s great when they pop back up again after a bit of downtime. I was actually born in Detroit but we moved to Jersey when I was 4. Fondly remember driving by the old Tiger Stadium one evening (well, not me driving, I was 12) in the summer of ’68 when the family was doing its nearly annual Midwest trip visiting family and friends, windows down in the car, and you could smell the cigar smoke and hear the organ music and cheers of the crowd… The grownups got tickets for the next evening. Mickey Lolich was pitching. Willie Horton hit a homerun. Or maybe not, maybe I just wanted him to. Beat the Yankees, low scoring game. Those old stadiums definitely had a unique smell to them… Go Tigers!

thats cool, I bet you’re the only flap HOFer who was born in Detroit

Tigers dark blue hat and D logo is classic, just like O’s white hat/black behind with grinning bird and orange bill. Good to see Royals relevant too; Giants had good battles with Detroit and KC during 3/5 days. Giants have ways to go to bridge present talent gap.

Yeah I was the same age as Paul (12) and really enjoyed watching that 1968 Tigers team that went all the way and knocked off the favored Cardinals led by Bob Gibson. Tigers had a lot of good players though P McLain was 31-6 ( still the most wins in a season?)Mickey Lolich 17-9, C Freehan, Lots of depth in OF with Kaline,Northrup,Stanley &Horton and my favorite Tiger PH Extraordinaire Gates Brown who was clutch as any player off the bench.

1B Cash,2B McAullife,SS Oyler? But the HERO of the W/S was definitely Mickey Lolich who out pitched the more celebrated McLain by going 3-0 with 3 complete games and hitting his one and only HR in the W/S it doesn’t get better than that!

So I’m all in for the Tigers to get in this year, makes for a nice story, and keep EX Barstool Chris sane for just awhile longer! Go Tigers 🐅

Legend has it that when the ’68 Tigers were on TV, the race riots in the streets calmed down noticeably…

Willie Horton is still alive at age 81.

So is Denny McLain. That’s a bet I would have lost w/o googling.

There are about 15 members of that team who are still alive, including Roy Face. Don’t remember he and Eddie Mathews were on it.

I may be misreading these odds to win the World Series or they’re not current. The four division leaders who’ll get first round byes should have the best chance. With a two game lead over the Braves, the Mets should be above them.

The Tigers are the Giants twin as far as hitting goes. They’ve got the CYA winner and likely Triple Crown winner paired with a dynamic rookie starter, a solid bullpen. If one is so inclined, a $100 bet today, to win $9000 would be worth it.

i think i’m doing something similar, 32-1 for them to win the AL looks pretty good to me. $50. Why not?

DK only offering 25-1 so FD def the place to bet that

Stanford Cardinal score first in ACC opener at Syracuse .Beautiful one handed grab by wide out Eric Ayomanor 17 yds from QB Ashton Daniels.

      Elic Ayomanor

      • alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 said, on September 20, 2024 at 6:20 pm

Stanford was looking good WillieD up 13-3 then give up a big play 67 yard TD to Hatcher just before the half 13-10.Syracuse now with momentum and gets the ball to start the 2nd half.Seems so weird having Stanford &Cal playing back East now, I hate it..

Yeah AK, Oyler had been Detroit’s SS that year, but wasn’t very good. Brilliant move by Mayo Smith to move Mickey Stanley from CF to SS late in the season so all 3 power-hitters in the OF could play everyday (Kaline/Horton/Northrup). That was a fun World Series.

Stunning fuck-ups by Brock and Flood…

  9. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on September 20, 2024 at 6:25 pm

Triple, Ramos on 3rd, no outs.

    Can’t get him home. Pathetic.

Just have 3 guys in a row try to bunt, make contact, force the Royals to make a play at home. That would be better than the S that happened.

Giants are 24th in ML in BA with RISP. I find it hard to believe that 6 teams are actually worse at that than the Giants.

    Royals are 2nd…

  10. willedav's avatar willedav said, on September 20, 2024 at 6:35 pm

2 out rally. Ramos crushes double Bailey gets one through IF to score him. 2-0 top 6.

Black is pitching his ass off. Hopefully he gets a double play here.

Pick 6 Cardinal . Miscommunication on route results in 70 yd int. 20-10 Stanford.

Yanks in Oaktown tonight for final visit. Always used to be good draw, BoSox too.

kids and I used my firm’s behind home seats for a sell out Boston game one night and the concessionaires were out of napkins by the second inning. The E Coli in the Fisher era.

    Go Giants!

Cardinal hit game winning FG in final seconds, win 26-24. Facing 4th and 9 from 45 yd line in Cuse territory QB completes 27 yd pass with 37 seconds to go.

  18. alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 said, on September 20, 2024 at 8:05 pm

    That inning was crazy??

? What if the umpires reversed the call? Royals get 2 runs and it’s tied with a guy on3 rd one out?? Wtf?? Yeah Melvin was thinking that and he was hot..

Well Stanford comes back on a money FG kick by Kenny who was perfect tonight going 4-4 and 8 for 8 for the season Stanford 26-24 !!! on last play of the game!

  19. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on September 20, 2024 at 9:04 pm

Doval busy tonight destroying any trade value he has for the offseason…

    • willedav's avatar willedav said, on September 21, 2024 at 6:49 am

Nothing different from what he’s done all year, to himself. Walks first 2 hitters he faces on 8 straight balls when he has save opp. The other night it was wild pitches. Just doesn’t have command and stint in Sac hasn’t done any good. I’d have traded him away for anything at deadline, as addition by subtraction to pen.

Rest of pitching all game had things set up nicely, shutting out Royals through 8, and he turned it into torture game.

  20. willedav's avatar willedav said, on September 21, 2024 at 10:07 am

“Feels like you could copy and paste the theme of this season at this point. Get a little momentum, then it evaporates. Inability to hit with RISP seems to be the key thing holding this team back.” Henry B. on Braves thread in TA after they lost to Marlins yesterday 4-3.

sound familiar? Braves have scored 18 more runs than Giants this season, .2 pct difference runs per game. They have given up full half run less per game, 84 total runs fewer than Giants and tops NL. Well pitched games on road trip lately, key to Giants winning anywhere but especially on road where they are 34-42.

Jesus. Watching this 9th inning. Fitz cannot choke like that in the 9th. Utter shit. That was the easiest ball to play in the world amd he gurffed it. Doval wasn’t the prob. This defense is a travesty.

WTF is with the review? The umps never said what they were reviewing. KC didn’t even call for it.

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on September 21, 2024 at 12:25 pm

Doval walked the first two batters like he was throwing cow turds. He brought on drama that didn’t need to be…

You forget B-Weezy? Shooter? They did that shit all the time.

Fitzgerald has to stop with the 9th inning errors.
