NFL > MLB
I don’t know when this began, maybe 3-4 years ago? But football became more fun for me to watch than baseball. It was never that way growing up as a kid. Who knows, maybe I’ve given into the short attention span that’s taken over the youth of today, their brains changed and shaped forever by the memes, gifs and “try not to laugh” videos that last 2 seconds per scene. There is something to be said about the shows we watched as kids not to mention the books we read, how we processed information, how we learned….
Anyway, I digress.
Go Niners!
It’s incredible to me that the Chiefs have become “America’s team” after not even going to a SB for 50 years. There were entire seasons that not a single game of theirs was televised here. And football was always the best sport for gambling.
To this very day I still use the Beaver Cleaver apology when needed.
“Sometimes you don’t realize you were bein’ a jerk, till after you were bein’ a jerk”
Works every time…
Props for sticking with them Loo. Hasn’t always been easy I’m sure. There was time Cowboys came under America’s team moniker, joke being it was more like “South America’s team.”
Mercury Morris gone at 77…
I worry about the kids today the media has changed so drastically and comes at you so fast that attention spans change by the minute. So much important stuff is replaced by bullshit. The dumbing down of America is in full swing. I also never thought I would like football as much as baseball but now I do.
Oh that’s sad about Mercury Morris. Another great pro out of tiny college. I’m reading book by Niners writer Michael Lombardi “Football Done Right” where he talks about favorite coaches and players, ranking top !00 players. Lot of guys from very obscure small schools in that list, especially once NFL integrated, AFL came along and teams started scouting HBCUs.
Meanwhile Daniel Jones had 12 straight completions, and is 14-16 for 156 and a TD in first half as NYGs lead old rival Browns 14-7.
Curious for last time SF Gs and NYGs both won on same day, Sunday or otherwise.
Reminds me of this great prank call to dopey Francesa…
RIP Mercury Morris you were special.First RB combination with Larry Csonka to go over a 1,000 yards together in a season! That 1972 Undefeated team will always be ever to gloat about that, and it was Morris who kept that smack going throughout the years..
Fumble recovery late 2nd quarter and D Jones drives Giants in for another score, 21-7 at halftime. The Great Karmatic Equalizer having his way with Deshaun Watson and Browns.
the Chiefs are currently my most hated team but that probably has a lot to do with the last 2 SB losses to them
If I wasn’t a long time fan, I would despise them if that makes any sense…
IMO, one major explanation for the decline of the attraction of baseball is the increase in the K rate per team per game. Stats show the the K rate has generally increased per decade. In the ’50’s, it was in the 4s per team per game, then in the ’60s when I first paid attention to the game and began playing it, it was in the 5s.
MLB lowered the mound in the late ’60s, so the rate actually dipped a bit in the ’70s, but then since the ’80s been going up every decade. Baseball reference has stats that since 2016 now the average K rate is over 8, and in 2024 in the high 8s. That’s over 17 Ks per every 9 inning game. With 54 outs needed in a complete 9 inning game, the out rate from Ks has doubled in 60-70 years, to now about 31% of the outs. The emphasis on seeking HRs now doubt has contributed, plus the 95+ velocity pitchers are now throwing, and the vanishing of starters going over 5 frames per game.
That’s a helluva lot of non-action per AB, where you don’t see a ball hit fair, a hit go through, a great play made in the IF or OF, a fielding error, players running first to third — all the athletic action that we used to see and appreciate as a big part of the game. To me, that’s maybe like an NFL where completed passes go from 70% to 50% of the time. A lot less action. The action deficit is real, so the boring factor of the game goes up commensurately.
I looked back at the box score of the Aug 24 game I saw in Seattle — Giants v. Mariners. 17Ks — right on the current average. The game they had the night before, the total for both teams was an astonishing 32 Ks. Crazy. The Mariners lead the MLB in average Ks per game at just over 10. Giants are down the list at 11th worst, at 8.9 per game. Who wants to pay $100 a seat, $50 for parking, and $20 beers to watch 17 strikeouts? I’m not up for that very much.

Absolutely Snarkk. A pitcher who averaged a K per inning was a celebrated rarity. Now it’s not even meaningful…
Baseball is the best sport to follow, especially if you grew up in a cold weather climate. Spring/summer/early fall are the best seasons to be alive. Everything that happens is put in context with the Century of American Exceptionalism and the ebbs and flows of our lives.
OTOH, as a stand alone event, nothing beats a football game, be it high school, college, or NFL. The playoffs are the best because there’s no losing allowed.
Basketball and hockey are the two most fun sports to play, but their regular season formats are so dull, and as far as I’m concerned, you can shove the business end of a snow shovel up winter’s ass.
Baseball news, Tigers ahead 4-3 over Balt in 7th. Twins losing 8-1 in first game of DH. Snell shutting out Royals after 6 on one hit and 9 Ks as SF leads 2-0. Tigers definitely in middle of this.
Snell is gonna get his bag, just wonder if Giants will be in on it. Posey take lead again?
Ownership has ALWAYS taken the “lead” in free agent acquisitions. Farhan is merely an advisor, and his one year with a player opt out on the 2nd year innovation has been an unqualified success, though you wouldn’t know it by the way the local dimmerati complains about them.
As an acknowledgement to Flavor’s blog I’m now rooting for the Tigers to make the playoffs.
What’s most unfortunate to me about sporting world is proliferation of club/travel teams that have come to dominate youth sports, down to middle school level. Out here in sunny California every major sport goes year round, for boys and girls–baseball/softball basketball soccer volleyball all of them. By time kids get to HS if you aren’t specializing you’re screwed.
I don’t think this is healthy mentally or physically for youth and those selling the “I can get your kids a D1 scholarship” are peddling nonsense while raking in $$ (and gear) from gullible parents.
My oldest daughter pitched on a girls fastpitch league when she was in HS and they were playing 3 games a day in Galt when it was over 105 in the summer. It was insane.
She went with golf after that.
Yeah, loved those Dolphins teams mainly because one of my fave non-Niners (along with Otis Taylor) was Paul Warfield.
Loved the Browns with Warfield and my all time favorite RB Leroy Kelly who had to fill Jim Brown’s shoes and did it well…
Philly learned their lesson in blitzing on the last drive where the Saints had the ball with a minute left. Instead of letting them pitch and catch, they pressured Carr for the pick.
Niners with the usual special teams breakdown to allow a fake punt to succeed, in a spot where it was very predictable. Niners have had very unspecial teams under Shanahan, consistently…
Meanwhile, stop the Giants! A sweep of the circling the drain Royals. Who knew? I hope this meaningless good streak does not mean it will save Farhan…
If they reach ,500 it will
ITS ALL about Juwan. Jennings today!!
3TD catches!! wow who needs Aiyuk?
Incredible play they need to lock him up long term he’s a Fantasy Football player dream today!!
If they don;t fiere rhe DC tomorrow, they are doomed.
Horrible fucking loss.
What a fucking joke. Cowing is abetter pas catcher than Bell. Bell has sucked all preseaosn and this season. So naturally he drops what would have won us the game.
Hmmm. Special teams problems? Ywep. Line problems? Yep. Defensive scheme problems?
Yep.
We solved none of these issues and it has cost us 2 games already.
3rd and goal from the 4 and we have our safeties 5 yards deep in the end zone.
They might as well have been playing in the stands.
I really cannot stress how much I hate this defensive scheme.
So many things to be aggravated about. Bell. Aiyuk. Moody. Special teams. The DB who let a reciever get 5 yards past him in that situation. Hindsight, but even the announcers who usually fawn over Shannahan were questioning completely deserting the run game. Augh. I hate when we are short yardage. Never make it, but teams always seem to against us..
Almost more annoying to watch than our Giants.
This was actually one of Shanny’s better called games. The only problem was the pitch near the goal line. They should have stuck with the Juice push that worked on the previous 4th downs. They scored more than enough points to win.
This defense is absolutely terrible. We constantly allow the opposing O line to get to the 2nd level on run plays. The LBs regularly drop 10-15 yards into coverage to allow short underneath throws and screens regularly get 15 yards. We should be rushing 5 MUCH more than we do. It just flat amazes me that this defense is constantly playing from theire heels and we aren’t creating more turnovers.
Special teams continue to be awful on coverage. The 4th down fake punt conversion was ridiculous. Just flat unprepared for the most basic things.
This team won’t make the playoffs playing this way. I’ve said this since the first peraeason game. We were missing all of our offensive stars and the offense wasn’t the problem.
How to make baseball more interesting again: borrow a page out of beer league softball where each team provides its own pitcher when batting. Offense would rule again!
