A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Revolting Loss

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on September 23, 2024

Remember all that stuff I said about preferring football over baseball? Man, forget all that, lol. That was one of the worst losses I can remember watching. In any sport. As much as I don’t trust Moody he’s become serviceable and I’m not gonna hold missing a 55 yarder against him. But Bell can suck a dick. And why is WIshnowsky considered one of the best punters in the league if he’s going to hit a line drive punt in such an obvious situation to put air under it? Agree with everything Chuck said about our D on the last thread. D-Co gotta go. There’s too much talent on that D to play like that.

Sigh, why is everything that goes wrong on Coach? Weren’t Niners about to fire Wilks (and he wasn’t only one who fans called out) last year after Minny game and all out blitz? That team only made it to SB, the envy of every fanbase, even after 5-3 start. Fire Everyone! 3 games in???

Is it on Melvin that Fitz blows a routine play in 9th? That vet SP Logan Webb can’t hold runners on? Are Royals about to fire their manager over late season collapse, losing 7 in a row/6 at home after being 15 games over .500 150 games in?

Do Melvin and pitching coaches deserve credit for what Snell has done or success of guys like Black and Roupp? Bivens Beck Walker?

I’ve coached basketball for almost 30 years. When my teams did well, I usually had the best players and they did well enough I looked good. sure you prepare, but players make the plays no matter what you tell them (or not), I don’t.

it’s not all on coach. If you want to pinpoint a player it’s Ronnie Bell. You HAVE to catch that ball in that situation and that would have iced the game. But if you think the D is operating at the full capacity of impact I don’t think we are watching the same game.

I’ve seen less than half of last 2 games. Yesterday was disappointed, in punt coverage and being unable to contain Stafford or running game. Not absolving coaching staff but I bet Warner massively upset his guys didn’t play as well as they expected.

Sometimes I wonder how John Wooden’s career might have gone without Alcindor, Walton, Wicks, Rowe, Bibby, etc. Although he did win twice (?) with not so great Steve Patterson at center…

Because they have the SAME PROBLEMS!!!!!

Scheme is VERY IMPORTANT in football. The scheme we run is very soft. We don’t stop the run or the shot passing game. We rarely blitz. We have given up 4 bombs in 3 games. Give ANY QB time and they can usually make a throw.

It would be like playing your front court on the perimeter to ensure rebounds while making your back court guard the lane. We have a TON of talent on defense yet the LBs end up 15-20 yards deep to stop big plays, but hey, they give up big plays. BECAUSE WE DON’T PRESSURE THE QB!!!! And we give up plays underneath. So we aren’t really stopping anything.

We rarely stunt or show anything resembling an effective blitz even when we do. There has not been an ‘all-out blitz’ yet this season.

Minnesota should have won by 27 points but for Warner. And that’s the biggest problem. They way they play defense, base 4 man rush, LBs deep in coverage, forces EVERY PLAYER to play perfectly. One breakdown in coverage means a completion. Minn disrupted Purdy by constantly blitzing him. Our neglected O line did little to adjust to that and he was off target a lot.

The defense was actually a little better yesterday disguising things and getting pressure.

Who’s fault is it when Gonzalez tags up from 1st on a fly ball with a runner at 3rd? Thus getting doubled off and the run not scoring? What is the 1st base coach saying there? Go on a flyball?

Who’s fault is it that players routinely get picked off? Or throw to the wrong base/miss the cutoff man? Make the 1st out at 3rd? The Giants had an inning this year where two guys got thrown out at 3rd on consecutive plays!!! The Giants call-ups are woefully unprepared to do things that we all learned in LITTLE LEAGUE.

You mean to tell me that they don’t teach fundamental baserunning techniques in the Instructional League? Rookie ball? The Fall League? A ball? AA? AAA ball? The big league team?

I can count about 8 guys called up in the last couple years who are clueless about the most basic things.

who is responsible for telling the punter to absolutely not kick the ball to the punt returner???

  2. willedav's avatar willedav said, on September 23, 2024 at 8:58 am

Yeah Bell catches that Rams in trouble. Odum (who has been involved in negative plays before) was one of guys who blew punt coverage. Ward got beat for critical play late again; Papa had said earlier on radio he might not be 100%. Regardless of defensive scheme, everyone has responsibilities run game and passing. Maybe they miss Greenlaw more than originally thought, and prompts lot of discussion and effort from staff and players at all levels.

  3. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on September 23, 2024 at 9:34 am

If Bell catches that ball we win the game. No other way to look at that.

If we ran an aggressive defense we would not need 5-6 seconds of coverage for every pass play. This is the PROBLEM. You don’t create pressure your coverage guys are out there trying to cover for way too long. Which leads to PI and D holding calls. Did we get any of those yesterday? Of course we did. We ran our same fucking defense regardless of knowing LA was going to pass.

Minn routinely lined up 5 (showed blitz) nearly every play to disguise their blitzes. Our wide 9 defense is ALWAYS 4 down linemen and the LBs playing way off the line.

Any time we show something different, teams adjust to it.

What galls me is we have the SAME problems year after year with Shanahan. Special teams fuckups have lost us 2 super bowls on blown punts and huge returns given up. 3 if you count the Ravens loss and the KO return. The FG missed was big, but falling for the fake punt opened the door for the Rams.

Unprepared. THAT is on the coaches. They have been giving up 3rd down plays at an alarming rate. These are the SAME problems as last year. And it is the same reason. Soft coverage on defense.

    • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on September 23, 2024 at 10:20 am

another thing I hate about Shanny. NO COACH blows a 10+ point lead as easily and as often as Shanny. I’d love to know if there’s a stat that tracks that.

      • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on September 23, 2024 at 12:10 pm

KNBR said this morning he’s lost 5 games (including yesterday) in his tenure at SF whilst having a 10+ point lead in the 4th quarter. Seemed more to me, but that’s what they reported…

  4. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on September 23, 2024 at 10:57 am

Yeah, Shanny’s lack of adjusting to in-game scenarios is sorely lacking. But special teams bear the brunt of really gagging this one up. Falling for the fake punt, missing the FG, and giving up the huge punt return did huge damage. Critical blunders in all their Super Bowl losses and NFCCG losses have a muffed punt or 3, and gigantice returns as part of the problems going back to 2011 and Kyle Fucking Williams. Even Preston Fucking Riley if you want to go way back.

Look at the Eagles. Their loss vs Atlanta underscored playing prevent as a losing proposition as Atl scored easily in 55 seconds to win with time running out. The very next week, in the same situation late, the Eagles brought pressure and blitzed, forced an INT, and won.

What do we do when we KNOW LA is gonna throw? Nothing. The defense, not adjusting to the fact th LA was gonna throw a lot late, led to PI calls and D holding penalties. And we STILL gave up a bomb late.

Utter insanity to think this defense is playing to its potential.

  5. alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 said, on September 23, 2024 at 11:25 am

Shanny’s refusal to upgrade both Special teams&OL ticks me off the most! He’s pig headed thinking all I need his offensive weapons and everything will work out,WRONG!! And then DC Sorenson who’s never held a DC job is showing his lack of experience and what the hell is his assistant DC Staley doing to help him out as well??49ers give up 77% 3rd down first downs the league avg is 23% that says it all.You might have the 3rd rated overall offense but if you can’t make the stops on defense especially 3rd down what good is it??They are ranked 21st on defense that’s not going to cut it.

Center Brendel&RT McKivitz are 2 of the worst rated at their position! They have a solid left side in Williams of course,LG Banks and thank god Puni at RG ( he’s going to be a star imo) but dammit upgrade the RT&Center!!

Yeah and Bell has a history of dropped balls going back to Michigan why was he even in the game over a veteran player Chris Conley who’s sure handed! Hell even Cowing would of been an upgrade over Taco Bell..

  6. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on September 23, 2024 at 1:33 pm

Willie, you can directly attribute those Super Bowl losses to Shanahan not being able to adjust to changing situations. The 3 biggest fails of course are the Super Bowls and loss in the NFCCG to the Rams. All games where the Niners had the ball AND a 10 point lead in the 4th quarter and pissed them away due to conservative play calling and otherwise not adjusting to game conditions. .

But there are games like yesterday where you just see the shit happening and know that they are not gonna stop the bleeding. Our fairly reliable kicker misses a FG. Having a guy like Ronnie Bell on the field, a guy prone to drops for his 2 year career, does just that. We don’t pressure Stafford even though we KNOW he’s gonna throw. So, boom, D holding calls and PIs soon follow.

The Niners get 3 points in the 4th and give up 13 unanswered.

  7. Giant Head's avatar Giant Head said, on September 23, 2024 at 2:54 pm

Revolting pretty perfect description. Kicking the punt anywhere but out of bounds is unacceptable. That is on the coach’s head!!!

The 49ers just lost their best interior DL player in DT Javone Hargrave for the Season with a partially torn tricep injury against the Rams! Damm the hits never end this season and the whole league with injuries.49ers avoided them last year, but it’s caught up to them this year!!!

LB Dee Winters also suffered a sprain ankle status unknown but expect him out and even Brock Purdy has back soreness and was going to have an MRI..

  12. willedav's avatar willedav said, on September 23, 2024 at 5:02 pm

At 8 minute mark in 3rd quarter Niners scored and led 21-7. So in 2.5 quarters Rams had scored 1 TD total vs. whatever scheme Niners were in.

Only after that point did Rams go on their run, outscoring SF 20-3.

  13. Paul Sorensen's avatar Paul Sorensen said, on September 23, 2024 at 6:23 pm

Maybe it’s a bit of a stretch, but you could possibly credit another Super Bowl loss to Shanahan: when he was OC for Falcons and all they had to do was run out the clock against NE. Instead, they blew 25 point lead. That’s probably more on the head coach, but I couldn’t believe how Atlanta blew that game.

    • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on September 23, 2024 at 7:19 pm

his history, when being part of a big lead, is abysmal.

    • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on September 23, 2024 at 7:38 pm

Totally. He was the OC calling plays.

All he needed was 3 points and the Falcons were in FG range. Instead he tried 2 passes and got a holding call on the o line and a sack and they were suddenly punting.

Since then he’s been way too conservative with the lead.

I think he’s fucked up in the head over it.

Anyone see Jayden Daniels tonight? Total stud so far. Maybe best game for a rookie QB ever.

Bell sucks. If Aiyuk could get open maybe he would get the ball more. SOOOO many things we failed at. Another in a long line of come from ahead losses. Maybe only 5x with a 10 point lead, but many more imo with a 7+ point lead.

Our big issue among many is both our O and D line play in short yardage. We can never get 2 yards when the other team knows we are going to run. 2 QB sneaks successful, but they we in our backfield on every play where we ran the ball. Our system on offense is the complicated trap blocking, which doesn’t work on 3rd and 1 with a stacked D-line against us.

Of course we made 2 in a row with a sneak, but ran it on 3rd and 1 from inside the 10 and were hit for a loss. FG made the lead 10 vs 14…..

Our D-line is built with faster guys but no run stuffers. When the other team is 3rd or 4th and 1 they make it way way more than we do. Augh

    • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on September 23, 2024 at 8:09 pm

Watch the LBs. We play them too deep most of the time. They play the short/middle zone and try to keep plays in front of them. They are simply reacting instead of going after guys.

    • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on September 23, 2024 at 8:11 pm

As far as the 3rd and 1’s go, they lost the Minn game trying to throw quick sideway passes on the goal line. The Minn d was getting in all game and to think they wouldn’t get tipped is simply stupid coaching.

I can’t get more pissed off at the soft cover zone/prevent defense we use EVERY goddamn play.
