5 days to hit 3
Can Chappy get to 30? That’s about all that’s left to root for this year. 30 would be nice though.

Gotta admit Birds has been pleasant surprise to get as far as he has, picking up W vs. strong DBax lineup as he got through 5 and only allowed 4 hits/2 BBs 2 runs. He still has command issues throwing too many non competitive pitches way out of zone that drive up pitch count (95 last night). But with curve and change to go with 95 heat he still has, it works. He’s already at 125 innings total (68 SF/57 Sac) vs. 100 thrown last season.
The game he pitched in Baltimore he got Henderson to chase a beautiful high 97 mph strike!!
Pitchers still seem so far ahead of hitters. Every team has their own “pitching labs” where guys go in off season, plus those already established like Driveline where they can measure and video everything imaginable. A kid like Birds has off speed stuff in high 80s. Wild ass Doval slider is 90+ and that’s not untypical these days.
where/how do hitters adjust? Watching Fitz last night, he was 0-4 and struck out 3 times barely making any contact at all, especially vs. off speed stuff on a night when other Giants were hammering XBHs off Rodriguez and DBax leaky pen. His overall numbers look great, but…he’s been in quite a slump for over a month. September he’s 16-66 (.242) with 0 HRs/ 28 Ks (2 BBs). He’s not getting on base and power is mostly gone. Burnt out or have pitchers adjusted and figured him out? He’s striking out at McCray level.
He’s 20-85 (.235) 1 HR 35 Ks (3 BBs). Given issues in field (though he did make nice play going far to left last night) I’m not sure he’s guaranteed a full time spot anywhere next season.
Could be next year’s Villar. Probably put him back as the utility guy.
Boston fast tracked Christian Koss from Rookie league to AAA last year and we made the same moves this year. Rated as an above average defensive SS, might be someone to keep an eye on unless they go FA at SS.
Agreed, Koss has been primary SS at Sac. Saw suggestion in TA that Schmitt could handle SS if Giants don’t get Adames or Kim, and I think that’s great idea. He has power and great arm and has always been solid IF defensively.
Schmitt had that one brutal defensive game this year but I am pretty confident in his ability and hopefully they get him playing daily at short throws off-season.
For misery my friend, Cray Cray la Femme…
(for old disco fans)
One more for Yaz to reach 20 HR’s as well, not bad for your 4-5 Outfielder that still plays a good RF..
End of the line for Marco Luciano who was recently sent down for Donovan Walton of all guys and now after failing in infield they want to try him outfield in AAA he’s done same with Thario Estrada who they completely threw under the bus and never called back up.
IMO the Giants have completely managed Luciano into a clusterF with a kid who looks like he can really hit. They’ll probably end up dealing him away for nothing, and another organization will figure it out…
Maybe he’ll have Adrianza’s career. Good old 000…
Fair point that Giants have mishandled Luciano as IF but he’s never shown he can really hit at any level above High A ball. He had 1 good season in San Jose and 1 at Eugene. 2023 at 2 different levels (AA and AAA) he hit .209 and .228, with some HR power, 15 in 320 ABs. This year in Sac he’s hit .250 with .760 OPS and 10 HRs in 310 ABs, below average numbers in very hitter friendly PCL. In past seasons he had back problems and missed valuable time.
maybe sticking him in OF he can relax and just concentrate on hitting. See what happens; plenty of opportunity to stick with Giants who are still looking for offense and some power.
He’s only 23, 2 years younger than Ramos who is finally ML ready and just turned 25. Wouldn’t write him off just yet.
Nice NYT obit for tenor sax player and composer Benny Golson who died at age 95. Part of some great bands and author of wonderful tunes like Along Came Betty, Stablemates, Whisper Not, I Remember Clifford and many others. Saw him live once at Dinkelspiel Aud at Stanford, very personable guy and great player.
God bless you, Unca…
hah!
Conforto is likely gone opening up spot in OF/DH. He’s second on team in doubles with 27 and has 19 HRs only 2 less than Ramos who has been up to plate 30 more times. Unfortunately only 3 of those have been hit at home; he has OPS on road of .849 with 34 of his 49 XBHs and 16 bombs.
If Luciano can hit for some power even if it’s doubles and triples that would go long way to replacing Conforto and helping Giants score runs. as is Giants are still 10th NL for runs scored and slugging pct.
Kinda funny opening OF D last night was Ramos in RF/Conforto in LF. At end Ramos was in LF and Yaz in RF and if they had been in there at start couple balls that got misplayed behind Birds might not have happened.
Ramos charges everything like a high speed bull and sometimes fucks up. Last night, he hustled himself into the soccer boot misplay and then into a brilliant diving catch. He still has a bad habit of lobbing the ball back to the IF on plays he assumes are over. High arc and an easy bounce to the SS or 2B. LF is safest for him, but he may be able to play RF at home. Lee in CF. Luciano in LF? I’m skeptical. Yaz back for one more year makes sense, although McCray has made his case for a fourth OF. Conforto surely is gone.
I am fine giving Luciano a good run as DH next year with Encarnacion and occasional starts with each in the OF agains lefties. Key is just letting him be for at least half the season and see if he adjust as Ramos has. I still think Matos is going to get it as well. If they go Ramos-Lee-Yaz with Luciano-Matos-Encarnacion as bench and DHs fine. Can they upgrade to Alfonso at first and be legit contender. Who else is out there for first? Bellinger too many question marks…
You see that in sports a fair amount: a team gets eliminated from contention, then with all the pressure off, starts playing loose, and having fun, and starts playing really well! The key, of course, is to perform well when the pressure is on, and a playoff spot is still available. But still, it sure is fun watching winning baseball from the Giants! And beating quality teams, which is a good feeling.
Indy’s Clark has been an outstanding rookie, but sometimes rookies are going to look like rookies. Indy got blown out in game 1 of their playoff series with Connecticut. It didn’t help that Clark got jabbed in the eye early in the game, and seemed to not be totally alright the rest of the game. But the real issue is that Indy just isn’t ready yet, roster-wise, to take the next step. Another draft or two, and they can get there.
Oh yeah vs. nemesis Diva Jonnai Carrington. She’s like fashion show–waist length blonde hair, head band, long eyelashes and makeup, one sleeve on arm/one long legging all color co-ordinated. I remember Carrington hitting a 3 vs. Indy and putting finger to her lips to shut them up. zzzz
She played at Stanford for few years then left as grad transfer. Lot of hype and flash, not so much substance.
Yeah, the Niner receiver has to catch that ball near the end of the game. Purdy made a great pass and the receiver botched it in a way that just makes you wonder how he could have botched that.
And then we know we’ve seen this kind of movie before, when you don’t put the game away, it so often bites you in the NFL.
Tigers win!
wow, 7 shutout innings for Cy Skubal in 2-1 W.
Bret Favre said today that he has Parkinson’s disease. He took tons of head shots in the NFL. Related? Goodell would say no…
Yeah how about them Tigers! Peaking at the right time down the stretch, 8-2 in last 10 games,Twins 3-7,Royals 2-8 right now their in, which would do wonders for Barstool Chris brain cells..🫡🤪
After the final out at the sold out E Coli tomorrow night 35,000 fans intend to STAY in their seats? That’ll be interesting.
John Fisher sends good-bye letter to A’s fans as if he ever gave a S about them — and gets hammered for it. Plenty of other articles out there on this. What an aszhat…
https://www.si.com/mlb/mlb-world-furious-over-john-fisher-s-letter-to-a-s-fans-before-final-oakland-series
Twins trail Marlins 4-0 early. Loss would put them 2 behind Tigers.
Bailey got hold of one. I’m thinking it’s been a while for that.
https://clutchpoints.com/giants-news-farhan-zaidi-honest-job-security
So Conforto gets his 20th HR,Webb gets his 200 innings and the Giants playing their best ball when it’s meaningless.Just trying and get to .500 and if they get over it, then Zadi figures he has a chance to save his job with the inept FO. Yeah that would truly suck ..
Wisely going yard 3 HR’s in inning guess they’re finally believe for 1 week that they don’t want to leave their trademark RISP on???
The old game show – Playing for Contracts.
Home run derby tonight.
Vamos ! this is awesome. Eff the DBax
These guys. Sheesh. Next year coming out of spring training, they should all be hypnotized to believe they’ve already been eliminated.
And no, getting to .500 should not buy Z another year. Woohoo, we achieved mediocrity… ick.
Boom! Sorry I missed start of this. Was watching friend’s kid play 7th grade ball, turned radio on and it’s 7-0.
Do the Giants have on their “We Score we Win” T-shirts on underneath their uni’s?, instead of their usual RISP laughter T-Shirt?
In the immortal words of Slim Pickens in Blazing Saddles:
“What in the wide, wide world of sports is a’goin on here ?”….
Favre is human garbage. Dick pics aside, he stole welfare funds from the state of Mississippi to the tune of $3 million to line his pockets.
Game.
Braves own tiebreaker vs. AZ, and if they win series vs. Mets will own that tiebreaker as well.
Dodgers BAHAHA!
Wow how about them Padres turning a Triple Play started by Machado to beat Dogpile who cut it to 4-2 and with 2 on no outs..They clinch their spot in playoffs, and now have a crack to overcome Dogpile for the Division Title!! Yeah Stick it up your asses Dodgers wear the sun don’t shine!!
Padres have enough pitching with Darvish back to make LA squirm. They wiped out Giants when they were here holding Giants to 3 runs in 3 games they swept. Now Giants have thrown 4 shutouts in last 8 games, and allowed 12 runs total. 2 of shutouts were Snell starts.
Very relevant point about last 8 not defining the team, which was 72-78 in 150 games beforehand. Giants started month off 4-9 plus loss to Miami Aug. 31.
Interesting column from Sluss in Chron discussing effects of analytics on the game in general with Michael Lewis, Cashman and Friedman, and others.
AZ has scored 3 runs in 2 games vs. Giants. they lead NL in runs scored with 864, and team OPS at .777. 3rd NL HRs, second in BA and slugging, first OB. Great outing for Webb and pen guys.
Btw absolutely wonderful story on Marichal in TA from Daniel Brown, walking around outside Oracle with great one as he visits each of the statues of himself and the others no longer with us and tells stories about them to columnist. Great pics of everyone from playing days.
Thanks, Willie. That was tremendous…
https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5791321/2024/09/25/sf-giants-juan-marichal-statues/
You’re welcome. The pictures from their playing days together were amazing.
Although I remember reading somewhere a long time ago that Mays had no use for Marichal in the aftermath of the Roseboro incident. Idk how long he harbored that feeling…
Pretty cool way to get into the playoffs. First time that has every happened in MLB. How / why do the Pads get into playoffs 3 of past 5 seasons, and Giants just once?
https://www.mlb.com/news/padres-beat-dodgers-on-triple-play-to-end-game
3 different managers. 2020 they went 37-23 under Preller hire Tingler, who didn’t survive next season as Pads went 79-83. 2022 was with Melvin. they won 89 games, beat 100 win Mets in WC and then knocked off 111 win Dodgers before losing to Philly. 2023 they won 82 but couldn’t make WC as DBax and Marlins slid in at end.
New manager Shildt won 90 games with STL but lost in playoffs twice and was let go. He had lot of success in STL and fans miss the guy.
Padres have a solid roster once they added Arraez to lead off and have ROY imo Merrill ( kid is special) up batting 5th now? And of course Machado,Tatis,Crowenworth,Bogaerts, and a winner like Donnie Barrels coming off the bench.Plenty of firepower, good starting staff Cease,Musgrove etc ,and a BP that’s been “Lights Out” once they added Tanner Scott at the deadline.Adams,Bristo, etc all have been great!
Nothing would make me happier to see them overtake the Dogpile and win the division at this point.Machado’s Triple Play was a tremendous had to go back a few steps to touch the bag at 3rd but his bullet perfect letter high throw to Crowenworth and his strong throw to yes Donnie Barrels at 1st to complete the TP and send all Dodgers fans scowling to the exits even better!!
Of course not at the same level but I once helped turn a TP playing 3B in Softball (I always anticipated the scenario of what to do in that moment)it’s the ultimate thrill when your playing even with the bag and and grab a smash step on 3rd and throw to second and on to first!!
whoa Kat that’s pretty cool, I never ever saw TP in many years of softball.
Did you ever go near Niners facility up off Roosevelt in Redwood City? I was once on a team that practiced on field near there, and Cedrick Hardman was in the gym playing basketball.
The first TP I ever saw…
Mazeroski only did this after first choice Clemente refused as he considered it an embarrassment…
Yeah Willie I used to go watch the 49ers practice at Roosevelt a lot.Hardman a great guy more than willing to say how’s it going.Dwayne Board another great guy, he lived near me and if I saw him outside on a walk he was more then happy shootin the breeze about football.I would also run into 49er players, like Bunz,Cross,Solomon even Montana&Clark at Canyon Inn a great pub alot of the players went too.And it’s still there going strong run by a guy named Tim Harrison a 49er die hard and has the whole inside loaded with Niners pictures..
Yeah very familiar with the Niners practice facility then, I use to play softball at the fields next to them Bechet,Griffin fields sometimes Hawes? Mostly played at Burton Park in San Carlos, and that team was really good,we also traveled for tournaments,Marysville,Folsom,Tahoe,Sonora etc.Are jersey tops were XMerchants of San Carlos, places that shutdown like Peggy Lees Ice Cream, Jacks Variety,The Movie houses,Laurel,Carlos, Tivoli etc with those names and are number on the back.. Sorry for the long post, but those days were the best times ever!!
They couldn’t double up Roberto let alone triple him up!
I’m sure I told you my stepfather worked ot Towne Ford in RC right next to Harry’s Hof Brau. I’d go down to Sequoia HS meet my stepfather and watch the practices and go to Harry’s and there’d be lots of current and old Niners there. Never saw Brodie but I did see Delvin Williams, Bob St Clair (way past his playing days), Ted Kwalick, Gene Washington (once), Skip Vanderbundt, Hardman, and a few others.
Joe got me a signed ball from the 1972 team. Lost it somewhere along the way.
From NY Post…
How do we assess the 2024 MLB season? With this: Lousy baseball played by teams unprepared and/or managed to play anything better than lousy baseball.
But aside from games disappearing for minimized audiences to watch lousy baseball played on added-pay streaming channels, credit Rob Manfred for proceeding with those hideous, tradition-abandoning, street-cred “City Connect” Nike uniforms.
As reader Joe Kane noted last week, “Those beautiful red and white pinstripe Phillies uniforms were replaced” by an ugly, mostly black ensemble.
It was under Manfred that MLB umps wore FTX endorsement patches, a “don’t ask questions” deal made with a fraud-based crypto currency operation that lost an estimated $8 billion of investors’ money.
As I’ve said before Manfred is chasing fans he’ll never get and pissing off the ones he has.
All this streaming shit is fucked up. And of course football is following suit. They USED to be the only sane ones in the whole fucking ordeal.
these Tigers announcers are having the time of their lives. Remember what this shit was like in 2010?
https://x.com/BallySportsDET/status/1839104030355636700
Tigers up 7-1. Royals won but those 2 will be up 2 on Twins at least with 4 to go.
Good to see a little joy in the Motor City. Go Tigers!
Trivia: Who was nicknamed the “Motor City Cobra?”
Sit down Joc.
Pena excited! Awesome!
