Yes in lot of ways it did. But for ownership and whomever is running FO I think there are lot of positives and they have clearer idea of what they have/what they need to do.
Position players-most of vets are gone and team as being rebuilt from 2021 era and they got good look at Ramos (clearly highlight of year) Matos and McCray in OF plus Fitz Schmitt Wisely Luciano on IF. Sucks that Flores and Estrada were hurt and awful and that Lee missed most of the year. Add in Meckler, contact guy (and that’s important for all young guys as they try to build on 2024 and try to improve OB) and Encarnacion as players who could help going forward. Chapman is here and that’s great, Yaz has likely one more season.
If Giants want to add FAs to areas of concern to fill holes (like SS or RH power OF/1b) they are better positioned to do so. Second half surges of DBax and Padres turned NL West into best Division in all baseball with 3 teams poised to win 90+ games.
As for pitching, again injuries and suckitude of those who had to fill in gaps around rotation really hurt early going. Maybe plan was futile one anyway, but getting nothing at all from Snell in first half, and really nothing from Ray or Cobb and only 2 decent months from Hicks experiment doomed Z plan.
Still think there are lot of bright spots among younger guys like Birds and Harrison. Walker emerged as legit closer and younger guys like Roupp Beck Black Bivens Miller and Rodriguez have lot of promise and got good exposure. Appears to be help on the way from Sac despite some ugly numbers from Whisenhunt and others. Doval may be salvageable, maybe not. Pen guys tend to be volatile, so no easy answers or decisions there but teams in post season are very strong in that area for most part.
Snell in second half was outstanding and I hope he can be retained. If not Giants have to shop at top of FA market for his replacement in rotation. This is what others in Division did (Glasnow Cease Flaherty Montgomery) and you have to have more than Webb to shut those high scoring teams down. Another area where I think Posey will have lot to say about how Giants move forward from ownership standpoint, no matter who is ultimately making decisions on roster.
I know the Giants had a shitty, forgettable season when my only baseball thoughts when I wake up are how is it possible that Wade and Don Blasingame aren’t related and how the fuck did Tony Kubek slaughter Frank Malzone in the 1957 ROY vote?
I appreciate WillieDav’s more optimistic slant but I side with Flavor and Djloo in viewing 2024 season as clear disappointment. Yes there is POTENTIAL upside with emergence of younger position players and POSSIBLE starting pitching depth. But candidly I think jury still out on whether 2024 youth movement has durability to become solid foundation for next few years. Better to save post mortem to Monday when season thankfully over.
Bottom line for me is yet another September when Giants weren’t part of any meaningful playoff conversation. That’s three consecutive years of stretch drives with Giants stranded in wilderness.
My question heading into final weekend is simple: did Baggerly overstate Posey’s influence in Chapman negotiations and apparent senior management/ownership frustration with Farhan Zaidi/Pete Putila regime or did Slusser overstate Zaidi’s role in finalizing Chapman deal? Is ownership seriously contemplating front office shake-up? All other Giants talk pales in comparison.
Thanks Dean but I’d agree this was disappointing year in which Giants were very frustrating to watch. Dodgers added Ohtani and T Hernandez to Betts Freeman W Smith lineup. Padres added Profar Arraez and solid vets like Peralta Solano plus tremendous year from rookie CF Merrill. DBax were best hitting team in NL from Marte on down despite Carroll getting off to terrible start. Guys Zaidi added beside Chapman to improve offense (Soler Lee Murphy) were fails and hurt.
Giants do not have an offense with near capabilities to score runs like these teams do. I don’t see a Soto or top end FA hitter interested in coming here, though Adames might. It’s tough park to hit in most of the year.
Looking at teams like LA, SD, and AZ scream past us with young talent and solid vets, yeah, major disappointment. And that’s just the NL West. We are still slow and boring. A couple bright spots don’t change that.
6 years in and we are still terrible defensively, have little power, don’t steal bases, and k at an alarming rate. You’d think there would be some improvement somewhere, but we are no better than we were in 2018.
As my post from last night showed (we gave up the same number of runs this year as LA and 100 less than AZ) .
We need a few MLB hitters. I love cheering for the home grown guys too but not all of them will be ready. McCray must start in the minors. OF Lee Ramos and “someone” with Yaz filling in and getting 350 ABs as 4th.
Inf Chappy, Fittz, 2b “someone”, 1B “someone” with Wade as Yaz type
a SOLID MLB quality catcher platoon for Baily who breaks down and sucks in 2nd half every year.
If we had all star level guys at 1st and 2nd it would take pressure off Fitz Ramos Baily
Sign Snell and our 4th 5th starters can come from the great group of youngsters to mix with Snell Webb Hicks. Easy right?
We CANNOT have Fitz Luciano , Wisely etc and Wade again
if the Giants manage to finish at .500 with the same number of runs scored and against Johnson’s dumb comment about just breaking even will live in hilarity. But money doesn’t seem to be the problem. Z may get one more off season with Posey over his shoulder to save his job. I think everyone knows where the holes are.
I hope Lee comes back strong. I also hope they keep Snell. Former seems more likely than the latter.
Come next spring I will be just as excited about the upcoming season as I was this year. I have always been an ardent Giants fan throughout the years thru the good years and the bad. But these last two years have been different. Don’t really know why maybe my age but when we play multiple sloppy games and pretty much boring ball I just lose interest. Hopefully we can figure a way to be competitive next spring.
Meanwhile there is Big Ten (with 18 teams now in it) conference game tonight featuring UW of Seattle WA at Rutgers of New Jersey. Next weekend The U of Miami Florida will visit Berkeley to play Cal in ACC (17 teams) league game.
“Fat, drunk, and stupid is no way to go through life, Flounder.”
They aren’t making any major changes. The team is right where the front office wants it.
They pretend to spend money while watching everyone leave for greener pastures on these 1 year deals.
Would love to see them actually sign a major talent but I don’t think it’s Snell. Would we overpay for Ray? Adames? Kim?
Anything, ffs.
I guess Chappie is a start, but if we don’;’t get anyone else, it’ll be another lost season that will end up in Chappie leaving at the next trade deadline.
remember those years when Cal started the season vs Tennessee? Pretty long trip to or from Knoxville. One year in Berkeley Desean Jackson single handedly destroyed the Vols.
6 years under Farhan and now are ranked by Fansgraph as the 28th farm team in baseball! So much of him building up the farm system.Ramos wasn’t even under his watch, so he gets no credit for him.Morroco&Belmo most of the staff need to be jettisoned the day the season ends!
For now in the off-season spend the bucks atleast on SS Wily Adames move Fitz to 2B and pray he can play decent there with his bonehead errors.1B,Another SP are 2 ( since Snell is gone book it)and more OF depth with only Ramos&Lee locks next season!!
I would like to see the Giants ( doubt it will happen probably needs more AB’s and continued work all offseason on defense/grounders,throws/short hops in dirt at 1B) get Bryce Eldridge up as fast as possible he’s the future and the future is now for a boring team that needs excitement..

It’s pretty clear that most Flappers agree on what the team needs to do this off-season (a Soto-Lite in the OF, slugger/1B/DH like Pete Alonso until Eldridge is ready, *someone* for SS who’s better than anyone on the team now, a 2nd good catcher, and a high-level SP). The problem for us fans is I doubt anyone here has any confidence that Z/Spatula can get it done, or even that they see correctly what needs to be done. Hoping beyond hope that Z and his minions are gone in just a few… more… days…
So I tuned it late (as if it matters) and rewinded back to Encarnacion ‘s HR and just prior to it I noticed the home plate ump telling him to tuck in his elephant pocket flap( which I don’t ever remember that ever happening to Soler) tucks it in and hits a bomb 💣 it’s all I have just thought it was interesting the umpire would do that..

As for a second, backup catcher — so far this season, there’s been a guy on the Pirates by name of Joey Bart:
Games: 78
ABs: 245
Slash: .261 / .336 / .461 /.797
OPS+ : 120
HRs: 13
RBI: 34
Ks: 70 ( per ABs rate = 28.6%)

Hey, UK Cats gave Georgia all they could handle. Remember Coach Cal yapping it was basketball school?
ha! My son follows UK football. I’m not sure my KY uncles know they play that sport.

Cal Bears I’m pissed the 49ers didn’t draft:
– Aaron Rodgers
– DeSean Jackson
– Keenan Allen
– Chuck Muncie (for his bong collection)

Huh. Braves, Mets, and D-Bags all tied for the last 2 WC spots. Mets and Bravos have a doubleheader on Monday.
And the pale hose lose game 121. Ouch.
Read scathing indictment in TA by Katie Woo on how Cardinals have lost “the way” of development and teaching fundamentals in minor league system.
wonder what our old buddy Daniel would have to say about this. Always enjoyable to hear his thoughts, going back to Pawlie’s book.
Sounds familiar.
