A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Wow!

What an exciting day of baseball that was. I wasn’t there obviously but that roar from the crowd when Tatis blasted that monster into space must have been fun to be a part of. The Tigers continue their magical journey even though they seem to be punting today’s game.

Yes it was exciting day of baseball. Watched most of 2 NL games. Sent good luck text to godson and his Padres, got response back of field shot he took from inside yard.

Pads drew 3.3 million, 3rd NL. And will add to bankroll with sellouts (at playoff ticket $$) for any more home games. Quite a payoff I’m sure Greg J quite envious of.

Then you have Mike Hazen of DBax and AZ owner admitting signing top FA SP Jordan Montgomery to $25 million (with $20 million option he vested for 2025 by making so many starts) was mistake. He gave up 17 runs over 18 innings in his last 5 starts in September, 4 of which AZ lost. ERA was over 6.00 in 25 starts.

At Posey presser yesterday Greg dodged questions I think from Shea about payroll, but there are going to be some limitations.

Posey being major part of Giants extending Chapman, which Baggs continues to stand behind, was significant move. Chapman wound up adding tremendous value to the team, one of few moves by Z that actually did some good, to point Posey jumped in with 5 year extension NTC etc.

All teams assign some type of monetary value via WAR or something similar to what player brings by combo of baserunning offense and D. Per Fangraphs and B/R Chapman was at the top for Giants and one of best in all NL. So Posey’s next job is find similar value in whatever moves he makes via trade or FA to add to talent level. In other words trying to find next guy(s) that are ultimately worth quite a bit more over salary paid and add to win column.

From Shea column in Chron today Sabes name comes up again. ” ‘I was texting with Sabes last night’ Posey told Chronicle, ‘and just told him once the dust settles a little bit, I want to hop on the phone with him.'”

i could marginally get behind bringing Sabes back but certainly not Bobby Evans. And really, let’s just move on from both those dudes. If Buster’s play is to just bring Sabes back that doesn’t seem to creative to me.

      • willedav's avatar willedav said, on October 2, 2024 at 8:43 am

I think it’s just matter of picking his brain for advice, especially on scouting and development, obvious area in need of major improvement. Posey hardly played in minors before winning rookie of year, hitting .305 with .500 slugging pct. So his experience was unique.

Please, not Sabean, not Bobby Evans.

We should not forget that Farhan arrived because the Giants had to jettison SabEvans. That duo drove the team 40 man into a ditch and left the farm system in a shambles that Farhan never totally dug out of…

      • willedav's avatar willedav said, on October 2, 2024 at 10:20 am

I’m hardly Sabes biggest fan but he was around when Giants drafted Webb and Ramos, 2 best guys on team besides Chapman. Scouting draft and development pretty big issues with Z. Posey will need all the help he can get.

Was Sabean’s run of first round picks from Cain to Buster the best ever? He’s still got his hand in, so he’s not irrelevant. Good adviser to have.

7 shutout innings from Michael King, 6 each from Cy Skubal and Cole Ragans of Royals in yesterday opening WC round games. Losing teams scored 5 runs total (4 by Brewers) in 4 games.

More Grumblings about Farhan within the organization and players/Scouts were :

Scouts were ticked off about Scout Brian Bannister who refused to get COVID shots and Farhan let him be in house video communication with players all year instead of out on the road like every other scout. That’s not what Posey is looking for in “Accountability”

The handling of both Marco Luciano role and especially Thario Estrada demotion to minors was baffling to many players and also the dumping of Alex Cobb a clubhouse presence didn’t sit well either..

I really want to see a lot of trades, along with acquisitions . . . For example, Giants projected arbitration salaries for 2025, via mlbtraderumors is as follows:

Yaz – $9.5 million (trade him, unless he is ONLY a utility player)

Wade – $4.7 million (trade him, as he is not a prototype 1st baseman, e.g., zero power)

    T. Rogers – $5.5 million (keep him)

Doval – $4.6 million (trade him or ensure he is not the closer – he’s a head case)

As I indicated at around the All Star break, we need Alonso at 1st (nod to Loo) and Adames at SS (nod to my man AK). Hopefully, Lee is the real deal and McCray improves his hitting, whereby Yaz is a utility outfielder.

Posey MUST be different from Zaidi, i.e., eagles (Posey) don’t take flight lessons from chickens (Zaidi).

Job #1 is to end all these opt-out deals. Either sign guys or shine them.

    Tyler, not Taylor, right?

Taylor was pretty much a nothingburger.

    • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on October 2, 2024 at 12:36 pm

      Yep, Tyler

    • Yogi Barrister's avatar Yogi Barrister said, on October 2, 2024 at 4:09 pm

That would be stupid. Gausman, Rodon, Snell all signed those deals. Manaea, Conforto, Chapman, all had opt-outs and were solid performers. Even Stripling ended up yielding a guy who stole 58 bases.

It’s the three year contracts that hurt: La Stella, Haniger, DeSclafani, Cobb (?), and Soler

Thanks Blade..I’m all over Adames his power numbers are impressive.Chuck’s boy Kim not nearly the player Adames is.Plus now Kim is having shoulder surgery so his F/A stock is fallingwho knows how long he could be out.No time for the Giants go after injured players anymore.. Both the same age 29 but Adames is an Ironman compared to Kim..

Also, I suggested Sabean 1-2 months ago coming on board. Similarly, as I indicated the other day, I am also in Kim Ng and Eve Rosenbaum’s corner as well.

I don’t get the resentment against Sabes, exception of Willie and Xoot (maybe others). Sheesh, he was the best GM EVER for the Giants. As Willie noted, some of his picks are blossoming as I type this. He’s still with the Yankees advising ownership and Cashman (who’s contract is up too). I am all for him coming back or minimally, Posey calling him for advice. In short, I am forever grateful for Sabean and what he did for this organization.

  10. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on October 2, 2024 at 1:54 pm

As an advisor? Sure. But as the full-fledged GM? No.

  11. alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 said, on October 2, 2024 at 2:02 pm

Yeah I could be in with Sabean with an advisory role with the Giants, he sure proved he’s not a lunatic with his Trade with the Indians that netted HOF 2B ( yes his numbers with the most HR’s ever at the position and his constant clutch hit as he always said at contract time “The money lies with the RBI’s” love that shit!!

Then Sabes fleecing the Whitesox’s at the trade deadline helped the Giants clinch the division

a shrewd move getting Darwin, Ramon Martinez? and the lefty starter I can’t remember his name but pitched really well..

Yes I’m all in on Kim Ng who has always been great at Analytics from college on and has respect throughout baseball. I don’t know anything about Eve Rosenbaum but now I’m curious to check her out Blade..

Btw Blade with your special knowledge of back pain I ordered your backpain Zyillon Shiatsu Pillow Massager with heat on Amazon it’s been great Thanks Blade a big knowing nod my man!

Was Julian Tavarez part of that deal?

    • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on October 2, 2024 at 2:28 pm

AK, I use it all the time, particularly before a workout with weights. Sheesh, you have a good memory. I must have bought this almost 4 years ago. Been a life saver, as I have gotten way more out of it versus its approximate $50 dollar cost (just used it Friday). Obviously, I would much rather have a Vietnamese, Thai, or Lao lovely doing the work (ask Paul), but this will suffice in the interim.

AK, Eve was trained by Kim Ng . . . Here is an excellent interview of Rosenbaum.

Wow thanks for that post Blade, I’m really impressed by Eve Rosenbaum and her developments from NFL now to Baseball impressing so many she’s now moved up to Asst GM with the Orioles ( her home town team growing up)and her continuing growth in analytics &Scouting is amazing!
Screw it I hope Posey takes a hard look at her outstanding resume and get her on board somehow with Kim Ng as a 1-2 combination to go along also with Alyssa Naaken ( sp?) wouldn’t that be something if nothing else you have 1/3 of 9/10 of a great softball team with those ladies..

  12. alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 said, on October 2, 2024 at 2:16 pm

Tigers just stay amazing. a base loaded clearing triple by Ibanez off of loser Hader lol 5-2 Tigers heading to bottom of the 8th and send those trash ass Astros out in this elimination game! Barstool Chris is probably losing it right now, voice, blood pressure, brain Aneurysm, sweating like pig for sure as well..TIGERS ALLDAY the youngest team in baseball ⚾️

Chuck I only want Sabes as another ear to listen too for Posey not the GM role..

Regarding massage and umm, other things . . . First time I met Paul was in Bangkok, Thailand, during my 2013 Around The World trip. After a night on the town, Paul and I ordered 2 Thai women via the Hotel concierge . . . Fast forward about a half hour later, Paul took his woman to his room and I took mine next door. Sheesh, I hadn’t done anything like that since my brother and I were in Tijuana when we were about 18 or 19 years old, while we were down south in San Diego surfing with another buddy.

Tigers didn’t punt. They started their run after trading their #2, demoting #3, and the #4 got hurt. They did it the new old fashioned way, a CYA winner, a solid #2, then using openers, and pitching bulk inning (former starters) innings 3-6.

Local guy from Westmont HS Campbell Lucas Erceg, deadline pickup from A’s, closes out the O’s for Royals who win 2-1. O’s scored 1 run (on HR) in 2 games at home. yikes

Has there been enough of a sample size to see if the teams that get this week off lose more than the teams that continue playing?

Cuz it sure seems like it’s a pretty big advantage to keep playing.

You have a short memory. After he signed here, he said he was ready to pitch. Pfffttt. This dude is glass and a head case.

Moreover, he’s a mercenary. Folks paid good money to watch him pitch last Sunday. He could have thrown 3 innings and folks would have been ecstatic. Not sorry at all that I am old school Again, fuck him. Last, but not least – I DO NOT WANT A PITCHER THAT BREAKS THE BANK. If you’re going to spend that much coin, get a hitter that plays every day. These piss ant pitchers now-a-days are worth 1/4 of a MadBum, Marichal, Koufax, Gibson, Seaver, etc.

Damm I wished the Giants had 10 Jackson Merrill’s on their team.Definitely ROY over Skenes.

Merrill’s going to be a star for years with that bat& power. Another one that the Giants let get away.2021 draft the Giants take pitcher Will Bednar ( yeah history of injuries) at #14 Merrill goes #27 by Padres and one of the best from that class..
