Back In…..First Place?
Still can’t believe the Niners are in first place after all of the nonsense so far this year. They should EASILY be 5-1.
Only 1 baseball game today. Obviously a Mets fan now.

Yeah Mets-Guards would be great Series. Guards are interesting team with great pitching team speed and D, plus couple guys with 30+ HRs.
Yes Flav is right–Ronnie Bell catches a ball thrown right in his hands and Mason doesn’t lose ball at the 8 yard line and SF could easily be 5-1.
Interesting column in Chron that talks to former players that are now leading other ML teams FOs including B Beane Sam Fuld and C Breslow, none of whom at Posey’s level as players. He’s now in charge of over 250 people and an entire organization from ML to rookie ball, and scouting and evaluation around the baseball world. Hopefully he has right people around him in rest of organization.
6-0 isn’t that far out of the question with the special teams fuckups in the Minnesota game.
But hey, they figured out how to win a game they were determined to throw away.
If they make half the mistakes they made against Seattle, they will lose. The good news is they get a chance to healthy up with this break.
Crazy stat. After the Seattle game, the Niners played 6 games in 31 days. In next 30 days, they play 2.
So, yeah, they CAN healthy up and get some shit in order. Especially the defense. And special teams.
Still rumblings about Bobby Evans returning to Giants in senior advisor capacity, not as GM. Outreach to Sabean and Evans suggests Buster more comfortable with familiar faces. I’m not crazy about Evans return and lukewarm at best on Sabean. But whether they return in consulting role, I maintain Buster needs strong GM outside current Giants hierarchy to bring critical eye to organization’s needs, fresh approach and willingness to challenge Posey’s assumptions. Has anyone picked up phone and called Kim Ng, Thad Levine, Mike Fast or Amiel Sawdaye?
Yeah, they HAVE to go a different direction with the GM. The farm is a shambles. It was a shambles when Sabevans left in 2018. Eldridge is our only hope. Hunter Bishop gets hurt every other day. Harrison looks like a 4 at best. They have a couple nice pieces in Walker and maybe Fitzpatrick, but we will have to wait for the next crop of draft picks for the next 5 years.
Get someone from the outside with a new perspective and new ideas.
100%
I like Sabes as an advisor on trades though. Good for Buster to have an experienced voice to bounce ideas off of.
sabevans could assist with the search for a new GM or whatever they call her. Prep for the QO/FA/trade/claim offseason has been in the works for a while. Nov 1 isn’t a deadline. Well, it is dia de los muertos. But you know…
There’s quite a lot of sports on TV today. Several NFL games, the Mets/Dodgers game, Game 2 of the WNBA Finals, a NASCAR race, and an NBA Network special about this year’s basketball Hall of Fame inductees.
Big reality-check for the Dallas Cowboys today.
I know that Joe Davis is Fox’s main play-by-play guy, but he’s also the Dodgers’ main TV play-by-play guy and that is a lousy situation.
Mets pitcher is choking.
Detroit’s best DL Hutchinson had his leg snapped. Brutal. Tough blow for them
The basketball and football Hall of Fames are so drama-free. They put some people in every year, and people move on.
The MLB Hall of Fame is just all kinds of drama and agony.
Because its a fucking joke. Up there with the rock and roll hall of fame.
Agree 100% with Unca on this.
Haven’t been to the MLB HOF, but don’t want too anymore. The R&R HOF was really a letdown IMO. Wish I had gone to the Slovenian Polka HOF in Cleveland instead.
This should have been the Phillies vs. the Dodgers, but the Phillies totally blew it.
The Phillies would have given the Dodgers a tougher fight.
San Diego fucked up pretty hard too.
I forgot about scherzer in the 21 series. Tv just mentioned him. Giants were gassed and LA had the big money and the big arm. I think he got a save in game five. Great season, though.
My sons and I sometimes agree on the one dodger to “hate.” Justin Turner was fine for a while, then he left and became just another good player. Ohtani, Mookie, and Freeman are all excellent. Can’t “hate” them. But Muncy. Muncy.
Dang pitching was supposed to be Dogs weakness… now 3 shutouts and pitching like Orioles did to them in 60s.
romeo doubs is great name. Saw him play for Nevada in Mtn West conference, wide open offense. Announcers said his name like “Dubs” annoying moniker for Warriors.
wow nice card. Dogs scored 2 runs total in 4 game sweep by O’s 1966. Frank Robinson MVP. good stuff loved that team
I actually have that card.
The Warriors look like they have a much better supporting cast this season. And they are giving Moody more time. Hield was a very good get. Haven’t seen much of Melton though.
Got to get out of the gate much better than the last couple seasons.
Yes much more depth. like Melton a lot and he might start opposite Steph. Kuminga and Moody look great so far.
Yeah that’s a start!
Didn’t realize it but Stu Miller was on that 1966 O’s team. Pitched another full season too at age 39.
So much for the scoreless streak.
The biggest game of Manea’s career. Go get ’em!
Manaea Rodon and Alex Cobb are all starting today? that deserves a hmmnn.
That deserves a ‘boy, those one-and-done-opt-out deals get you nowhere’ kind of thing.
Giants got one great season out of Rodon. Yanks on hook for $110 million for 4 more years by which time he’ll be 35. First season he was hurt and awful. Pass.
They should rename the team to the Revolving doors.
Yup. Trading Cobb ,notwithstanding it’s a testament to Zaidi.
Manaea who signed another one and one year contract with the Mets, left because of Melvin. Their pitching coach is top notch.
Melvin wasn’t the manager in 2023. I’m pretty sure Manaea left because of the way Kapler used him.
Manea and Melvin appear to get along well, going back to their days together at the E Coli. When they were both with the pods and made the PS, I remember seeing video of them off to the side celebrating like friends.
Melvn was his manager in 2022 and when he was with the A’s.
He was pulled from the starting rotation with a 7.91 ERA. Regained his market value as a bulk inning reliever and started again the last month.
The Mets pitching coach has helped him tremendously. Great two contracts for him, he’ll get upwards of $60 million.
Gone! Vientos with slam off Knack! what an AB.
Adios, pelota! 6-0 Mets!
One thing too funny. And this happened during the game at the USC game at the Rose Bowl.
Any shot outside the stadium, you couldn’t see more than a mile due to the heavy smog.
Tailor made DP from Freeman who can barely walk and Iglesias boots it.
yep. Jesus. 0-2 meatball, and Alonso boots that as well. 6 out inning.
This is what the future holds for the Oakland A’s (just ask the Raiders).
https://x.com/BrodieBz/status/1845898095114010696 . . . lqtm
Yeeeeeesh!!! You can make 2 challenges?
Runner should be called out for hitting the 2nd baseman.
fucking Muncy.
wow bobble at 3b and wild throw to 2b saved by Alonso and Maton gets GIDP.
Mets need to get those back.
Mets are dancing on the edge here.
Yes! And hey, they ain’t bumping uglies.
Our future 1st baseman (I hope).
Big Boy Pete gets one back. RBI single from Marte. Hopefully 4 is enough cushion for Diaz.
All fastballs from Diaz for last 2 Ks.
whoosh! Finally slider after like 12 fastballs in a row and Diaz finishes them off. All even!
Manaea and co. held top of the order down today except for walks.
Edman had 3 hits. This was good get for Dogs in that big 3 team trade. Only 29, can play SS 3b 2b and OF, has been league average hitter (.300 once) and stolen 30 bags in couple different seasons before for Cards. If he stays healthy that will help solidify their IF and he’s only making $3 mil. Arb eligible this season/FA 2026.
Now it’s Cobb vs. Rodon in ALCS Game 1.
Yogi you have your seasons mixed up re Manaea and numbers you cited. It was 2023 with Kapler where he had a rough start and the Giants began using him behind an opener. Not 2022, as Locojuan indicated earlier.
Manea fled Zaidi.
Manaea fled the Padres first after Melvin didn’t use him in the WC and NLDS, then hung him out to dry for 1.1 innings against the Dodgers. If he and Melvin were so tight, why did he opt out a week after he became the Giants manager to sign for the same amount with the Mets?
Not being guaranteed a spot in the rotation was no doubt the main factor, but he can’t blame Zaidi or Kapler for his lousy starts in such a pitcher friendly park. He should be grateful to them (and Bailey) for resurrecting his perceived value as a bulk innings guy.
The real point is that fans who complain about signing pitchers to one year with a player option on the second year contracts are a win-win for the Giants. None of those guys over 30 are going to be healthy at the end of long term contracts. Zaidi signed the only durable pitcher left in baseball to a five year extension. The pitching coach for the Mets is teaching the starters to throw more fastballs, scale back on pitches that strain their arms.
oh shit. Need an edit or delete button. WordPress sucks.
Obviously Giants fans who complain about the one and one year contracts are a lose-lose for everybody, especially themselves.
”Snell sucks, why did Zaidi sign him?”
”Snell’s great, why didn’t didn’t Zaidi sign $200 million for five year deal he’s asking for?”
I think Manea signed with the Mets for $14.5 million. More than his Giants contract. Also, anecdotally:

Oh, SOAD. Rewrite history somewhere else.
You think a good long-term solution to building a winning team is to rotate through a pitching staff every year?
No one was pissed at the Giants for signing Rodon or Gasman or Cobb or Manea or even Snell. We were frustrated for the fact that we all KNEW they were leaving after rehabbing their value. Or just buying a year like Snell did.
Snell sucked for half his season and guess what? He’s gonna get a massive deal somewhere else. Yay!
You really think it’s great idea to build a team this way? Please tell me yes, skippy. Hicks isn’t gonna be a starter next year. Birdsong looks decent. Harrison is looking like a bottom of the rotation guy. Webb is Webb. Keaton win = Blake Snell!!!! That’s the ticket!
He actually got half a million less from the Mets this year than he would have from the Giants
Giants Contract: $5 million signing bonus, to be paid in two installments
$7.5 million in 2023
$12.5 million for 2024
Mets Contract: $12 million this year (plus the $2.5 million signing bonus)
$13 million next year if he stays. The Mets will almost certainly extend his contract
Chucklehead, you’re the one rewriting a dystopian future after the fact. You’re worse than a Monday morning quarterback, because with malice of afterthought, you’re shitting on the cake you just devoured.
”Enjoy” the 49ers and the Warriors, they’ll make a Sharks fan out of you yet.
If Zaidi/Kapler hadn’t taken Manaea with his 7.91 ERA out of the starting rotation, which BTW coincided with their brief hot streak in May, it’s doubtful he would have been in a position to opt out.
https://x.com/yogi_barrister/status/1721318345461682201
He’s definitely in a better place now. Jeremy Hefner is the new old school pitching coach of future. Throw fastballs and maybe your starters won’t get hurt.
so 12.5 is greater than 12+ 2.5? Got it.
I’m not going to research the minutiae. The signing bonus(es), the length of the contracts, etc. I don’t really care. But there’s no evidence that Manea left the Giants becz Kapler was fired and Melvin hired.
Including the $2.5 million signing bonus, Manaea would have made $15 million with the Giants.
As for whether Manaea left because he disliked Melvin more than Zaidi/Kapler: I wasn’t aware commenters on this blog are required to provide evidence that would hold up in a court of law.
It’s probably because he LIKED Mendoza and Hefner more than the half million in salary he gave up.
again, the terms of the contracts overlap in a slightly confusing way. I’m not all that interested. Mets gave Manea a two year $28 million deal. Maybe the Mets also promised him he wouldn’t spend those two years pitching behind openers. I don’t know.
you’re right about evidence. Not everyone cares.
I prefer this argument because there’s clearly a correct answer.
$2.5 million of Manaea’s $14.5 million salary on the Mets’ books for 2024 is being paid by the Giants. He received $10 million in 2023.
If he opts in, he’ll get $13.5 million next year, which begs the question*, if Zaidi was foolish to sign him to a one year ($12.5 million including the signing bonus) with a player option $12.5 million salary for 2024, doesn’t that make the Mets foolish too?
*The preferred usage of the phrase “begging the question” in online discourse means to ask a question that will further the value of the said discourse. Only pedants believe otherwise.
that’s a pissant question. Knock yourself out.
Agree. Only a pissant Zaidi hater can answer it without begging the question*
*A logical fallacy requiring circular reasoning
no one hates Zaidi. You’re obsessed. Abacinated, not enlightened. The simple question was whether he and his staff contributed to Manea’s decision to take a two year offer from NYM. More likely than not, yes.
Compiling an argument from evidence is like harnessing a flea circus. Just finding the fleas, the minutiae, yields nothing but annoying bites. But if you’re happy, well, have fun.
Crazy stat mentioned in Dodger game. In his 19 AB’s with RISP Ohtani has 16 hits. Insane!
Go Mets!
Want to hear a crazy stat? In the first 31 days of the season, the 49ers played 6 games.
In the next 30, they play 2.
They get some time to get healthy. And tighten up their defense. And special teams.
Is it so hard to figure out that these pitchers sign these deals to rehab their reputations and thus get their big deal somewhere else? Rodon, Gasman, Ray, Snell, Ray, and Manaea, all took these deals to right their own value. Manaea was coming off and awful year in SD, Gasman was awful and hurt for the Braves and Reds, Rodon, like Snell, didn’t get the deal he wanted and got the opt-out. Ray was coming back from TJ surgery.
The reason teams do this is to get the one guy they need to get over the top. Not to build a rotation that will be different year to year.
Answer the question, SOAD.
I can’t answer the question why you’re so fucking miserable Chuckie. It’s probably either because you think the outcomes of sporting events are important, or you’re a chatbot programmed to antagonize any human beings who stumble upon this hellhole.
It IS the right way to build a pitching staff. Just don’t make Price your pitching coach.
Name a staff built on one-year deals.
Oh, so you hang around here for the political banter?
What a loon.
