NY VS LA
And the good news there is that I think I’ve got most of you rooting for the Yankees with me. Are there any Flappers out there with the gall to admit publicly they’re rooting for LA?

All in on the Yankees. Would be great to see Dodgers fall short again. Assuming Gerrit Cole delivers couple of strong starts, key to series might be ex-Giant Carlos Rodon. Not confident about Yankees bullpen.
If anyone in Flap nation has any news on Giants GM search or potential free agent targets, please share. Assuming World Series goes full seven games, Nov 3rd date Giants can sign their own free agents and Nov 7th date Giants can sign other teams free agents. Three weeks removed from Zaidi firing and Posey promotion and yet all quiet on the western front.
Billy Owens appears to be a front runner, someone who has been part of the A’s for 25 years. At MCC site Brian Murphy said he was little dismayed Giants seem to reaching back that far to fill new position under Posey. Also wondered if Owens was meant to be the shield in front of him to face public for whatever next moves were made.
A’s certainly have been able to promote talented players to ML level in last 2 decades and be competitive; even in recent years when they’ve dealt most of them away there is some talent there– witness Brent Rooker and his 39 HRs and speedy OF Lawrence Butler with 22 HRs and .800 OPS.
some pitchers too
Still amazed how MLB managed to find batting helmet to fit Juan Soto .
My “hatred” of the Dodgers began when I was 7 years old in 1963 when the Dogs swept my Yankees. While NY hasn’t been “my” team for many years, LA has remained the bottom dweller that it is. Just want to see some good baseball. With these 2 teams, certainly the best in the majors this year, should in fact be some good baseball….
The Jets lost, and the Mets lost, so it remained for the Liberty to win something for NY last night, and they did. They are 2024 WNBA champions. The final game was not pretty. A defensive battle, with lots of sloppy play, with both teams looking like nerves were factoring in. The game did go into overtime, and it will interesting to me to see what the TV ratings were, with so much NY sports competition going on, on other networks.
I didn’t watch the game to the end, and I later saw that there was some complaining in the media of the reffing in the late stages of the game. Blown calls can be a bitter pill to swallow, for sports fans. Blown calls can make a difference.
It was very physical game overall. Fairly significant difference in FTs attempted but NY team bigger and more inside oriented offensively the than Lynx. Lynx didn’t make 1 field goal in OT and shot poorly overall which cost them in end.
Having to root for this particular Yankees team isn’t too hard for me. There’s nobody on their team I have a big dislike for. Camera shots of the Yankee fans will be the harder thing for me. And if it’s Joe Davis doing the play-by-play, that will be a drag. He’s the Dodgers’ regular guy, and that ain’t right if he’s doing the World Series. But I guess Scully used to do that, too (which I didn’t like, either.)
Growing up in the suburbs of NYC, I rooted for both teams. Both had appeal to me, not just because of location: The Mets had an eye-popping logo in my school colors, and a colorful roster of old-time players from the 50’s, plus Casey Stengel, the first game I saw live was at the Polo Grounds against the Giants. The Yankees had tradition, classic uniforms, Mickey Mantle, Whitey Ford, with Joe Garagiola and Phil Rizzuto manning the mics. On Sunday afternoons, I was called through the humid air waves down to the Bronx or Queens to watch them play
I guess I’ve been a Dodger hater since 1963 when they swept the Yankees, though TBH I was much more engaged rooting for the Twins and that classic 60’s roster against them in 1965.
One thing Red Sox fans AND Giants fans never understood is how little New York and LA care about the rivalry. As it was when the Bronx was burning, the Orioles, the Royals, and then the Dodgers were their real rivals and where their energy was focused.
Fuck the Dodgers, fuck LA, and fuck S. California (umm, soft spot for all things San Diego though).
Come on. Don’t hold back, Blade!
Yeah, pretty much the same. Growing up here you are taught early to hate LA and their water-stealing ways.
You read my mind, i.e., I was thinking “Chinatown, LA Confidential, and other movies” made about this corrupt area.
Just watched Chinatown a couple weeks ago. Great movie.
Tough to support ex Dodgers that came over to SF too. Reggie Smith was one thing, Orel Hershiser quite another. Isn’t he still on ESPN? yuck
Ron Fairly when he came to airwaves here wasn’t too well rec’d.
With much reluctance, I’ll root for the Yanks.
I’m physically incapable of rooting for the bums. I think all vertebrates are. So all the best to Arson Judge and his teammates. I liked Rodon while he was here. I “despise” Muncy. So be it.
Muncy and Kike can kiss my wrinkled ass. Fuck those tools.
Rodon faced Dogs 3 times as a Giant in 2022. 2 of them went well, one didn’t and they lit him up for 5 runs in 5 innings. Others he last typical 6 both times and only gave up 2 runs total. One of those Giants completed shutout behind him in June and won 2-0. that LA lineup had Betts Freeman T. Turner Smith and J. Turner plus Lux and Bellinger.
So far in postseason he’s pitched 3 times and given up 7 runs in 14.1. Couldn’t get out of 4th vs. Royals in game Yanks lost, and vs. Guards got knocked out in 5th after 85 pitches 2 runs allowed.
Dodgers scored 46 runs vs. Mets in 6 games. Yankees pen didn’t look so hot vs. Guards either, so whomever comes in after Rodon and other SPs will be factor.
My sentiments exactly . . . https://x.com/GarlicFryRy/status/1848515056029274492
Really don’t like the week break between the CS games and the World Series.
Yeah, it’s ridiculous and counter-productive scheduling. The momentum from the league series gets kind of frittered away.
Fernando, dead at 63.
What the hell ? I definitely remember that kid, and his screwball. He tore up the Giants and everybody else that first year in ’81. He was the Doghair’s Lincecum, 25 years early…
Valenzuela had a 17 year playing career and some 20 yrs as a dodgers broadcaster. He’s really nothing like Lincecum. I doubt anyone is.
Very few Bums I like – Fernando was one (Koufax another, and Robinson).
Yeah, I respected Koufax like I did Gibson regular Giants killers. Go Yankees, even though I hate them too.
RIP Fernando. It’s a shame we lost him before Yankees v Dodgers 3.0
I had a long running debate with Bill James (once my mentor for baseball arguments), which ended with him blocking both me and the alter account I created so I could resume the “debate”.
My contention is that abstract metrics like WAR and FIP are as important as scouting for the development of a successful team, BUT should not be used by baseball writers when voting for awards (especially the CYA) and admission to the HOF. It’s surprising the BBWAA hasn’t addressed this as it’s an existential threat to their very livelihood. They should be giving greater weight to W-L records, entertainment value of the story, and impact on our culture. Ray Ratto, who’s my favorite sports pundit, but was ridiculous in 2012 when he said he might not vote for Scherzer and his Triple Crown winning teammate for CYA/MVP because he thought Anibel Sanchez and Mike Trout were better that year. Still love Ratto though, he’s the bastard son of Fernando Valenzuela and Thurman Munson and Luis Tiant, a sports journalist whose counting stats alone merits admission to the HOF.A modest proposal: Create another wing in Cooperstown for players like Fernando and Luis, who exuded style and joyfulness on the field, won most of the games they played in, and if they were successful broadcasters or another baseball related occupation, factor that in too.
Wins, Yogi? How often did Cain lose games when he pitched well and got no run support? Webb? Because that’s the problem– crediting anyone for the W depends on too much out of their control, most importantly how well team playing behind them hits or fields. Not to mention what happens to the guys that follow them into the game, who can either “save” it, vulture it, or blow it entirely and cost them potential W.
Guys like Russ Ortiz won lot of games for Braves, but actually were the shits. Bartolo Colon was very entertaining but he won 18 games with ERA over 5.00. Then he won 21 games and AL Cy “though he finished 8th in the league in ERA” per Keith Law.
Tom Glavine at age 41 with Mets 2007 had winning record (13-8) despite ERA of 4.45 and giving up 10 hits per 9 innings.
Matt Cain in 2007 had an ERA of 3.65 and went 7-16.
For the CYA, you should use IPs as the dedominator with wins, losses, runs allowed as the numerator. With Skubal, it’s not a debate. If two pitchers were relatively close in both stats, I were voting I’d prioritize winning and not losing over runs allowed.
The HOF is different. The current trend is to dismiss counting stats of pitchers like Valenzuela and Tiant, and the ability to generate excitement has never been much of a factor, which is odd considering baseball writers are story tellers. Even if he never wins another game, deGrom is more likely to get in than Colon.
Entertainment value? I know! A hall of Fame for dugout home run celebrations!
The Mariners trident gets my vote!
As if 257 wins weren’t enough. Valenzuela generated a tremendous number of ticket sales over the course of his career.
When he was at his peak, Tiant did as well, along with countless stories that writers and broadcasters would retell.
That has value both have memorabilia on display in Cooperstown that draw more attention than Harold Baines and Craig Biggio’s plaques.
Saw Bronny James 2 minutes on floor with Dad, yawn, though it was great win for Lakers vs. top West team T-Wolves they led from start to finish. Anthony Davis, when healthy, is a problem.
Once G League starts that’s obviously where Jr. belongs, and I think he’ll find it’s quite competitive and major challenge. Read a great book by Alex Squadron “Life in the G” that followed players and team around for a season, eye opening. Team filled with guys desperate to get back to NBA after brief training camp runs with years of experience or years spent overseas…training facilities, travel from small town to small town, et al. Quite the grind.
Being so close to the money, fame, glory of NBA, NFL, MLB must literally drive some crazy. Imagine if NFL players who got cut had to go back and play college FB for $50k a year in a stadium only 10% full after getting $700k? and did it for a decade like some minor leaguers do???
From an article in the Athletic about upcoming WS from G Brisbee
“No uncompleted transaction will ever beat the Yankees bowing out of the Barry Bonds sweepstakes, though. From the New York Times in 1992:
Barry Bonds did not think $36 million was enough for him to play baseball in the Bronx for the next five years. The superstar free agent wanted $43 million over six years. The Yankees refused to budge on the extra year and the extra millions, so last night they withdrew their offer and said their interest in this year’s top free-agent prospect had vanished.“
Lucky us!
I’d say the Braves not getting Freeman’s contract nailed down was pretty fucking stupid.
ohtani LA Judge NY
1st time in 48 years (1976 Reds Yankees Ken Griffey Sr / Chris Chambliss) for top two teams and top 2 HR leaders to face off. Hopefully the Yankees will win it this time!
Dude, what???
Yeah, Fernando was the outlier. Loved watching him pitch. Saw him and Krukow go toe to toe in ’85 (?) ’86 (?) ’87 (?) at the Stick. Giants won 2-1 and it was stellar from both guys. No relievers. Just 2 guys pitching with all they had.
