A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Ugh

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on October 26, 2024

Honestly, if there’s one Dodger that’s impossible to dislike it’s Freddy Freeman. Dude is as genuine as they come. He’s as legit and committed to playing the game as they come as is evidenced by how many hours he is spending every day getting his foot ready to play.

I was traveling in France when Gibson hit his miracle bomb and missed it entirely. I think back then I waited for my buddy to send me newspaper clippings of that game, lol. Cool to see this one live.

I hated the outcome but it was also pretty fucking awesome and incredible too…..

Well said Flav and spot on about Freeman, who wound up being the difference.

props to Yogi for sending that Analytic Awards vid, quite interesting though there is a lot of math, as that’s what they do. As he noted if you skip to 10 minute (18 total) mark the guy doing the vid gets to his Defensive player of the Year.

Ominously enough, 3 different guys on rival teams are among most valuable and/or unluckiest in all baseball–Corbin Carroll ( tops for baserunning) Tatis Jr. (who apparently hit in tough luck) and SP Brandon Pfaadt of DBax as guys whose results should have been lot better based on expected stats than they were.

However…last night again gets to heart of the whole “pitcher wins” problem when it comes to evaluating SPs. Most impressive pitcher entire game was Cole. He left game with the lead after allowing 4 hits 1 run 0 BBs in 6 laser focused game face innings.

His team only scored once more and 3 different pen guys after him blew the save (twice) and ultimately lost game. This is all stuff completely beyond his control.

86 pitches is lame. Cole was pitching fine. The Yanks problem is their pen and they go to it early for no reason.

Said this 2 days ago, “In my mind, the Yankees only real weakness is their bullpen.”

Agree that MLB needs to address limp dick pitchers and the “mentality,” where there’s a mind-set that starting pitchers can’t pitch beyond the 5th or 6th inning.

BEEN SAYING THIS FOR YEARS. Starts in little league and high school, where kids are going on their 2nd and 3rd Tommy John surgery before they get to college or the minor leagues. Entire game is fucked up and boring due to this phenomenon going on for at least the last 15-20 years in the MLB. Ergo, there are few or no pitchers accumulating complete games, 200 innings (much less the gold standard of 250-300 innings from way back when), 20 game winners, etc. Instead we have these so called “pitching specialists” that inundate a roster. This comes at the expense of what I just said about starting pitching; and worse, it impacts roster slots for pinch hitters.

Worse, as I alluded to above, it usually results in boring baseball (albeit, last night’s game was NOT boring), where there’s at least 10 SOs for each team, numerous walks . . . In other words, a snore fest. End of rant.

Baseball Reference shows the average total strikeouts for a game in 2024 is about 17, both teams combined. That’s nearly 32% of the game’s total outs. In the 50s-60s time frame, the average was around 8-9, essentially HALF of what it is now. No wonder we oldsters look back on the 60’s as the Golden Age of baseball. It WAS actually baseball then — hit balls, running down ropes in the outfield, diving stops at second, short and third, guys thrown out trying to go first to third, etc. PLAYS were made to get outs, not strikeouts, i.e, no real action with the batted ball. Strikeouts = YAWN…

Yeah I agree this is the goddam W/S and Cole was dealing let your Ace continue.Felt the same way when Snell got pulled by Cash pitching a gem for Rays and of course the BP blew that game as well..

Yeah of all the Doghairs it’s hard to have bad feelings about Freeman he’s a genuine nice guy, even interacts with opposing players at 1st after a hit /walk it’s hard to dislike him and he’s the ultimate gamer who’s dealing through a bad ankle and yet delivers in the clutch with a triple and a Walkoff HR..

Yeah just another rumor but I heard the Giants might be interested in F/A LHP Reliever Tanner Scott who’s stuff is incredible and could easily slide into the closer role are atleast with Walker a duo role.It would be great adding him to the BP .Lots of teams will be after him as he’s the easily the top reliever available..

it was the fine Freddie Freeman game, from his opportunistic triple to his booming slam. Wish he hadn’t enjoyed that basetop hula dance so much. But it was a three bagger on a bad ankle. He had reason to exult. Long layoff favors the bums, so far. I think Willie D warned us of that.

Didn’t realize it but Indiana QB Tayven Jackson is younger brother of Warriors Trayce Jackson -Davis. IU undefeated and rolling.

Reposted this from late last night. Agree with kat…

Another example of how analytics cost a team a game in the WS. Star pitcher. Game 1 starter and recent Cy Young winner removed after 6 innings. 1 run. 4 hits. 89 pitches. Yankees wouldn’t have pitched the 6th guy in there bullpen who hadn’t pitched in a month if Cole finishes 7th. A quick inning and he would have started the 8th.

Soto is a stud hitter but in the field not so much. The 1st triple was his bad route to the ball, and on the Ohtani double then 3rd on error…no clue why he stopped and turned around so early. looked like another step and reach a very catchable ball…likely 2 runs on him

Snarkk, exactly. I barely recognize this game that’s played today. Coupled with what Willie told me about youth sports last week, I am beside myself at how all the sports we enjoyed as kids growing up – have turned commercialized not only at the pro and college level, but now at the “T-ball” level. This has jack shit to do with “inflation” when compared to the 1960s cost of playing the 3 main sports (baseball, football, and basketball) . . . Everything has gone up exponentially, coupled with travel, specialized training, facility fees, etc., which weren’t even in the equation of youth community sports circa 1960s and 1970s.

Not certain, but I think baseball free agency, coupled with network TV throwing millions of dollars at the NFL, followed by billions of dollars (from cable and networks) to both leagues, along with basketball (after Magic and Bird revived the game), set in motion this idea, “Hey, we can emulate this money grab in USA communities too . . . cha ching!”

I have no problems with Freeman, except his laundry.

I was down in Anaheim for the 9er Rams game that weekend that Gibson hit his dinger (a WS that I couldn’t root for either team). After the 9er win we had one of them cheap flights out of Burbank. The A’s fans on the flight, after losing two were bummed, all of us Niner fans were pumped after beating the Rams, so they didn’t load the cocktail cart on that flight, I’m guessing they didn’t know how that was going to mix. I was pissed off, back in those days I could have easily gotten two doubles in on that hour flight home.

Did Baseball media really needed to add “Melt Cube”do his gang banging skit after the National Anthem??God I hate LA even more then usual..

I liked the NY players laughing and pretending to dance to old LA beats.

Don’t care for injuries to anybody but the oddsmakers could swing more towards the Yankees if Othani is done.Sounds like his shoulder popped out.Maybe needs Mel Gibson to pop it back in?

    • xoot's avatar xoot said, on October 26, 2024 at 8:46 pm

yeah. Maybe the shoulder. No problem. Guy in the shorebreak on the east side of Santa Cruz as I was headed in begged me to help him pop his shoulder back in place. We were both wearing wetsuits. I couldn’t really see a problem with his shoulder. Big wave crashed. He popped up laughing. Shoulder was back in place. He headed out.

Roberts has been fortunate to get 2 good starts out of rotation so far.

As for Rodon…I’ve changed mind about Giants not re signing him or Gausman. They have not been as good as they were here in SF and Giants being on hook for $110 million over 5 years for either of these guys was not going to be good.

Didn’t see much of game but Kopech was also part of the big deadline trade that brought Edman to LA. Dogs sure reaping benefits of that one at least for now.

    gasman would be great here.

    • willedav's avatar willedav said, on October 27, 2024 at 11:35 am

On a steady but noticeable decline already and Jays still owe him 2 more years. ERA went up a full run. He’s more hittable and not as good as before. I liked him, but no longer what he was

      • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on October 27, 2024 at 2:42 pm

Compared to Harrison? Hicks? Black? Sure.

      • willedav's avatar willedav said, on October 27, 2024 at 3:18 pm

Nobody is giving up on Harrison after his first full season of 24 starts. Giants have number of young inexpensive arms including Birds that could help them. Sure I’d like another top of rotation guy but that’s not Gausman (@$23 million for 2 more years) any more. And saving $$ on SP leaves room to spend it elsewhere on positions of need.

      • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on October 27, 2024 at 4:41 pm

This team crying poverty is laughable.

        “Don’t get Soto.”

        “Don’t get Snell.”

The teams that actually get these guys are spending more than us already.

And our excuse is to save money for Chapman???

        GImme a break.

Jesus Christ. Lots of stupid football. Chicago tries the refrigerator play with the up lineman with the RB behind him. The lineman fumbles the handoff on the go-ahead TD from the 1.

The Raider get a 1st and goal on the 5, run 3x up the middle, and take the sack.

I thought it was just us, but there are a lot of stupid play calls going on today.
