Sax player and producer Teo Macero born on this day October 30 1925, passed Feb 19 2008. Macero was in on so many great recordings at Columbia, including Miles Davis Charles Mingus (Ah Um) and thelonious Monk. Monk and miles recorded tunes they name Teo. Monk one has great melody.
On one of the Monk documentaries is great scene in studio where he goes off on Macero, where Monk wanted to hear playback of something Macero wasn’t recording. Monk says, “Why doesn’t nobody do what I ask them to do? I wanted to hear how that (tune Ugly Beauty) sounds.”
Macero said he thought the quartet was only rehearsing, and Monk says, “You rehearse every time you play on your instrument. Saxophone player, you should know that.”
