A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Hicks And His Hot Licks

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on April 1, 2025

i was a big skeptic of Hicks last year just because he’d never started before and I knew he’d hit a wall at some point after he blew past his career innings total. He was actually worse than I thought he’d be, he pretty much fell apart once Summer hit. But goddamn it’s hard not to be excited about him after what we saw last night. And there’s legit cause for optimism with last year under his belt AND the 20 pounds of muscle he put on over the off season.

Webby tonight…..

Yeah, Blade, nice talking to you yesterday. Our move is in play, but it’ll be a year or 2 depending on outside circumstances.

We will see going forward with Hicks, all the pitchers are strong to start the season but will wear down in the days of summer.I agree Hicks wore down and adding 20lbs of muscle should help him but I’m a firm believer they should give Birdsong a spot in this rotation his ST was phenomenal his control which was erratic for sure last year wasn’t a issue he ST NO WALKS 19 K’s!! I’m actually excited even if it’s early in the season about the whole pitching staff!

Hicks throwing gas yesterday was nice to see. But it is April. He faded badly down the stretch last year.

Surprised Roupp got the 5th spot in the rotation. Didn’t really see too much of the spring training starts, but Dirty harry didn’t even make the squad.

Yeah, one game doesn’t say a lot for the long-haul but it he can continue to deal like that he’s not going anywhere. Birdsong will be up sooner rather than later and I am totally jazzed about him also.

    • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on April 1, 2025 at 11:56 am

Thought Birdsong was in the pen for now. Long relief?

      • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on April 1, 2025 at 12:01 pm

Minors, if I recall correctly. Someone else was given his spot temporarily, as Birdsong will be up, but the initial schedule made it impractical to do so at the start of the season (or some such reason).

      • Winder's avatar Winder said, on April 1, 2025 at 12:10 pm

I believe he pitdhed last night and was on fire. It might have been the day before.

  5. alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 said, on April 1, 2025 at 1:02 pm

Birdsong is on the 26 man active roster, just haven’t needed him yet out of the bullpen since the starter have been pitching great so far.I believe their skipping Roupp start they want to keep Webb on his usual 5 day start,Roupp will start the next day.Verlandet the opening day home opener..

      Ahh, thanks Winder and AK.

    • Winder's avatar Winder said, on April 1, 2025 at 1:58 pm

I don’t know what I was reading but it was this morning and I could have sworn it was about Birdsong getting some work in in the minors. I guess I am losing it.

Tip of the cap for the Dan Hicks ref, Flav.

Hicks threw 72 pitches in 6 innings and gave up 1 hit. He looked strong and in command.

Me too, willie. I got to play with her once on a song she was working on, never heard back from her so I must have really fucked it up. I have a cassette of it somewhere that I should give a listen to.

Oh xoot would know better than me. Unfamiliar with how Hispanic announcers call a game.

Did read cool book written by guy who visited PR, DR and Venezuela and Central America to watch games there. He met Clemente widow, Vera at some event in PR.

In 2011, I spent 4-5 months learning Spanish with a Costco Spanish language CD disk and then practicing on the phone with my mom (whom was fluent). All of this was in preparation for my Central America and South America trip (3.5 months). Willie, I was actually quasi fluent by the end of the trip. I didn’t visit another Spanish speaking country until Uruguay in 2018 and I had forgotten most of the Spanish I had learned. Use it or lose it, as the saying goes. Pfffttt!

If any of you guys can’t see the game, Stream East is working now. No idea why it didn’t the first couple of games of the season.

Watching this Warrior game it boggles my mind how fucking biased these refs are. Steph gets fouled before he shots, during his shot, and after his shot. No foul.

    Kere’s gonna get tossed.

Koss in middle of another DP. Good for him, and Webb.

    • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on April 1, 2025 at 7:09 pm

Koss was not expected to make the team (as I noted during the 1st game). He better get going, because the Giants are not going to be patient with any rookie.

      • alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 said, on April 1, 2025 at 7:35 pm

Koss could easily get a job selling Koss headphones again Blade..

  18. blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on April 1, 2025 at 7:34 pm

Per the Astros broadcasting crew, the Giants have “owned” the ‘stros the last few years. Good early start for the Giants.

    Giants win!

  20. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on April 1, 2025 at 7:39 pm

So far the team looks much more legit than last year. Solid D, timely hitting, and starters doing well. Didn’t think they did enough, but hey, I’m wrong all the time.

    • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on April 1, 2025 at 7:54 pm

Unca, this is probably on me, not the Giants, but I still have a hard time figuring out how the Giants (much less any team) can win with a team BA of .226 (I just checked), OBP of .276, and other low hitter stats. Again, I guess I am thinking back to the 60s, 70s, 80s, when that got you last place. I always forget that the game is different today, but memories are hard to erase.

    • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on April 1, 2025 at 9:10 pm

They win by not making mistakes. Other teams cover for that by mashing home runs.

  21. Dean's avatar Dean said, on April 1, 2025 at 7:49 pm

Strong performance by Webby. Capable relief pitching despite Rogers surrendering two hits in 8th.

Back-to-back series wins on road vs two teams projected to win or be near top of their respective divisions. Completing sweep tomorrow would be icing on cake but regardless successful opening road trip.

Here is third time trying to post…

I was telling my kid during spring training that all the winning was a good sign of hopefully the team building confidence in one another and bonding. Looks like that has carried over.

I think we might have the best rotation in the NL. Not too worried about the hitting when you go 4-1 on the road to start the season. Just win series baby!!!

  23. willedav's avatar willedav said, on April 2, 2025 at 6:58 am

Saw some Sac box scores on MCC site. 3 starters including Harrison went 4 innings and allowed total of 2 runs. Harrison had fastball up to 94-95 and K’d 5. Seymour didn’t allow a run in his start. Whisenhunt gave up 2 in his start and was followed by Trevor McDonald who had 4 shutout innings. Beck had 2 shutout relief innings in opener.

Eldridge wrist still bothering him so he’s in AZ right now. No word on where he starts season with River Cats or in AA with Richmond.

Yeah, ol’ Dan Hicks and his Hot Licks have been a Bay Area institution forever. Seen them at Grant and Green a few times a hundred years ago.

  25. alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 said, on April 2, 2025 at 12:52 pm

Dan Hicks and the Hot Licks were a great band and a cool band name..

Followed up by the 49ers secondary of Dwight Hicks and his secondary mates of Ronnie Lott,Carlton Williamson &Eric Wright laying the wood 🪵 and great coverage as Rookies ( except for Dwight)helping the 49ers reach the SB ! Incredible drafting by Walsh&Co back then.

Fucking WordPress freezes up my post!

I was going to mention the Rivercats home opener starter Carson Whisenhut who took a tough loss somehow giving up only 2 runs in 4.2 innings, but he freaking K’d 9 batters no walks on 65 pitches. He has a devastating change up which he got 7K’s on ..
Pretty excited to have both him and Harrison still rounding into shape..They are stacked with good pitching right now as we wait for the inevitable breakdowns it’s good to have plenty of depth especially pitchers..

    Curse of the pitching coach.

was just gonna post how well Ramos hit LHP, then booming double. 5-0 Giants.

  29. willedav's avatar willedav said, on April 2, 2025 at 2:43 pm

Roupp melts down in 5th yikes. too many easy take non competitive pitches. 5-1 lead, walking the #9 hitter and losing Paredes after he got ahead.

Besides Bivens, pen so far has pitched 14 innings and only given up 1 run, by Walker.

    • willedav's avatar willedav said, on April 2, 2025 at 5:00 pm

Correct, only lasted 4+. 5 more shutout innings from pen, 3 hits 1 BB 6 Ks. 6 straight retired by Rogers and Doval 8th-9th. Good to see Birds in there too. Maybe next start for #5 guy is his.
