Hicks Better Be On Top Of His Game

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on April 17, 2025

Huff and Koss for the loss? That’s quite a duo locking down the 8/9 holes. Who knows? All we do is play hard and good things usually happen when you play hard.

Yeah, the dreaded getaway lineup. Bruce Bochy’s white-flag lineup. Got to score early and give Hicks some rope.

The lineup looks alright to me, get to see how hungry a couple of backups are. I think Huff is going to be a good pickup and get Schmitt some playing time at first.

Lee deserves a day off too.

Two out hitting, gotta love that.

our SP across the board has not been good.

  4. Locojuan's avatar Locojuan said, on April 17, 2025 at 1:31 pm

Oh oh, going to need a lot of no outs hitting.

Last day for Hicks on my fantasy team.

Hitting and scoring obviously better than expected for SF, so far.

But, not to throw too much shade early on, sheesh, the Gyros starters so far have been less than stellar, less than expected. Way less. Today included. Concerning. Before today’s tilt, the starters’ ERA is poor — down at 27th in MLB. And, 2nd most in MLB in BBs given up. That, after the supposed focus on strike throwing in STraining.

Keep this up and the really good Pen now will be gassed in August/September…

Very noticeable on the MLB website that despite their stellar start, the Giants get very little respect, very little run from MLB. Yanks and LA could catch fleas and lay down like dogs, yet tons of one off stories every day. I think the A’s even get more run so far. I don’t know why a big market team like SF doesn’t garner more attention.

    • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on April 17, 2025 at 2:13 pm

Because they don’t do super splashy things. Posey generated some buzz for a minute. As did Adames, but look at what LA did. Or the Yanks. Or any other number of teams.

Beyond that, like the day to day ‘power’ rankings, who gives a flying fuck? Like Yaz said, being under the radar is fine. Just go and play, have fun, win games. All the other shit will come around if they can sustain this.

  8. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on April 17, 2025 at 2:14 pm

And yeah. grease up the Bird Man for the rotation.

  9. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on April 17, 2025 at 3:02 pm

And Hicks goes 7. First guy? I think Webby did.

After the 1st inning Hicks pitched well, but Giants have K’d 14 times, that’s not going to cut it..

  11. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on April 17, 2025 at 3:14 pm

2 walks and 2 passed balls to start the bottom of the 8th.

  12. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on April 17, 2025 at 3:17 pm

Wow, Huff ain’t the best backup catcher imaginable. WTF ever happened to the oft-injured Murphy? He’s still cashing checks, but he’s been invisible after getting hurt. That was a massive bust signing.

Also, so far, Adames is not making me forget Crawford’s glove, that’s for sure. The guy for that S-ton of cash he signed for, needs to up his glove and throwing game, plus really wake up his bat. “Trying too hard” is getting to be a really lame excuse by the announcers…

    • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on April 17, 2025 at 3:34 pm

Agreed on both counts. Murph is too bad but criminy. No ABs in 2 seasons? Shades of Mark De La Rosa.

And yeah, Adamaes has shown nothing with the bat. Disappointing.

  13. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on April 17, 2025 at 3:28 pm

No shame in taking a split in Philly and getting out of town.

One of the poorer efforts so far, though. Bad D, Pen let the team down late. SS is a position that is challenged defensively on this team.

And Adames has shown nothing at the plate so far.

  14. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on April 17, 2025 at 3:38 pm

Huh. Didn’t know Jorge Soler made his way to the LAngels. 4 dingers.

    • bassbaldy's avatar bassbaldy said, on April 17, 2025 at 3:51 pm

Angels are my ‘sleeper/surprise’ team pick for 2025. Intuiting they are gonna make some waves this year. Them adding Soler was NOT the reason. I could be wrong but will get a better read after this weekend’s series.

  15. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on April 17, 2025 at 4:26 pm

That will be a surprise to the Angels themselves.

  16. Locojuan's avatar Locojuan said, on April 17, 2025 at 4:50 pm

The B team got beat but battled. If they can win the series in Disneyland, they’d get back home feeling good after this 18 game roadie.

I recorded the game. Hicks gets BIG kudos for saving the bullpen with a solid effort after the 1st. Schmidt is useless:)

  18. Paul Sorensen's avatar Paul Sorensen said, on April 17, 2025 at 7:49 pm

Yeah, the ol’ B Team lineup, Getawayday lineup, etc. Yes, Bochy did it… I seem to remember Baker doing it too. I never really understood that, sitting 4 regulars in the same game. Why not spread it out, give ’em a day’s rest, but not all at once. There were a lot of really low batting averages in that lineup…..

Bassist Buster Williams turned 83 yesterday. Saw him live in Cedar Walton Trio with Billy Higgins. One of my favorite recordings from early 70s he was in quintet with Joe Farrell Chick Corea Elvin Jones and Airto Moreira for CTI “Outback.” one of those great CTI cover photos too.

As for getaway lineup, Sanchez of Phils was tough on everyone except Chapman with that killer changeup of his. Most concerned about who would be backup CF to Lee. Doesn’t seem to be best use of Matos and isn’t Yaz best spot either, especially vs. LHP.

Command still an issue for Hicks who had better luck using the 100 mph fastball less and getting more groundballs (13) vs. hitters he didn’t walk (25). think SPs will come around but as Brisbee said in TA today, Giants depth for rotation options including Sac is good problem to have.

    • xoot's avatar xoot said, on April 18, 2025 at 8:23 am

“Buddy, I’m just throwing out questions because I lack the answers.” Only compelling line in Brisbee’s piece. Who’s rising in Sac? Whisenhunt, maybe? SP is a problem, throughout the 40 man roster. Will the vets come around? Maybe.

April 2022 was every bit as exciting as is April 2025. Will history repeat, or, as mark twain had it, rhyme?

      • willedav's avatar willedav said, on April 18, 2025 at 9:01 am

Aren’t hitters generally ahead of pitchers in early season? iirc vet hitters saying they only needed 20 ST ABs to feel ready. Pitchers usually working on different pitches or grips etc.

Ray and Hicks have lot going for them that I think can get sorted as they throw more games/innings. Birdsong and Roupp have shown promise and as Sac guys get stretched out (something Posey mentioned too to as goal) we can get better idea who could take someone’s place if needed. Playing so many early road games in hitter friendly yards will as opposed to the O should also help.

    • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on April 18, 2025 at 10:47 am

If Yaz is hitting he’s a better option than Matos.

As far as the pitching goes, yeah, and according to Farhan (last all star break) we have the best rotation in the league.

    That was not Gold Glove-like.

  22. blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on April 18, 2025 at 7:14 pm

Spot on Mac. WTF was he doing going into Adames “area” for anyway??? Speaking of Adames, a Flapper said last night, “He wont make anyone forget Craw . . . ” or something similar. Anyone else think Craw would have had that sharp liner? I do.

    • bassbaldy's avatar bassbaldy said, on April 18, 2025 at 7:44 pm

That is for certain. Craw? In his prime? Without doubt.

I never thought of Adames as a defensive addition as much as for his bat. Looks like we got neither .. so far.

  23. willedav's avatar willedav said, on April 18, 2025 at 7:53 pm

Anderson has given up 2 hits to Lee. rest of the lineup is 1-16. Only 4 Ks but lot of soft contact.

  24. Paul Sorensen's avatar Paul Sorensen said, on April 18, 2025 at 8:06 pm

As long as the Giants have only 3 players hitting above .250, and 6 or 7 players hitting below .200, the starting pitching needs to be right on. Webb and Ray are there; Verlander is ok for up to 5 innings; Hicks, I just don’t see it over the long run. Birdsong will be fine, maybe even Roupp will be fine, and maybe Whisenhunt will see the majors this season. I think by June, some changes might be made and things will settle down…

    • xoot's avatar xoot said, on April 18, 2025 at 8:39 pm

Giants are averaging 5 1/2 runs per game. Near the top in mlb. Giants SPs with the exception of Webb not only have terrible era their WHIPs are hideously huge, too. Offense and pen have won the games. D and running game have helped. I’m sure something will change by June.

      • Paul Sorensen's avatar Paul Sorensen said, on April 18, 2025 at 9:21 pm

Yes, that’s a nice stat, but it’s been fueled mainly by 3 hitters, maybe 4. If hitters are supposed to be ahead of the pitchers at this point, then the team needs to make sure all the .200 hitters get that memo….

      • xoot's avatar xoot said, on April 18, 2025 at 9:45 pm

SPs with the exception of Webb are way the fuck behind. And I think there’s no way runs per game stays above 5 for very long.

  25. alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 said, on April 18, 2025 at 8:19 pm

Typical Webb start totally dominate with 12k’s thru 6 and yet getting Cained again..

  26. Macdog's avatar Macdog said, on April 18, 2025 at 8:36 pm

Adames sure swings at alot of balls.

  27. blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on April 18, 2025 at 9:01 pm

The SO in the top of the 6th, where Adames swung and miss on a high, outside pitch is indicative of that Mac . . . As the Giants go quietly into the night. Sigh. Fortunately, there’s 140 games left.

    • Macdog's avatar Macdog said, on April 18, 2025 at 9:14 pm

He struck himself out again in the 8th chasing another outside pitch. And braindead Bailey swinging at 2-0 to make the final out was just as infuriating.

  28. blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on April 18, 2025 at 9:41 pm

Webb struck out 12 while giving up four hits and walking none over six innings . . . As AK alluded to @ 8:19pm – he deserved better. This is why we hate the “get-away white flag game” (thank you Unca), as it just makes things exponentially worse. Go get ’em tomorrow . . .
