A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

He’s Baaaack

Bochy ambling back into town, if that does anything for ya. The Rangers are coming off a brutal loss to the Sacramento team. Eovaldi can be tough at times. I still like our chances in this series.

Big Happy Birthday to a Flap Hall of Famer, UncaChuck!

That photo yesterday (Loo is right about the date) reminded me of how old I am and how bone weary tired I am of my current move to Washington State, but it’s worth it. Of course, I was juggling a million things yesterday and missed the game . . . From the comments, it sounded like the game of the year thus far. Missed a good one it seems. Sigh . . .

Moves are a bitch but they can be incredibly rejuvenating too. Katie and I absolutely love living in Redwood Shores. For me it’s a second time and I think it means a little more to me just looking at life, and all the years that have gone by. Glad it is already “worth it” to you after the huge move you two made. Shit Katie I me just moved 15 miles you guys went significantly further lol

When we texted about a month ago regarding your move, you sounded excited about it, e.g., all the amenities (gym, spa, etc.), and the fact that you WERE COMPLETELY DONE DOING MAINTENANCE, “HONEY DEWS,” DIY HOME IMPROVEMENT PROJECTS, ETC.

Ironically Flav, even though I still own a home, the fact that I bought nearly new, coupled with hiring a weekly landscaping service yesterday, indicates I am contracting that crap out. Looking into getting a housekeeper too. Anyway, yes, I love it here for these and a million other reasons.

Satisfying W in kinda the “I don’t have to outrun the lion” joke way. Giants were 1-13 with RISP, but the one hit by Flores was huge. D was definitely not clean, but Brewers couldn’t throw out Fitzy on groundball with IF in and Yelich dropped fly ball in his glove with man on 3b and then fell down before he could throw. Rbi was eventually credited to Adames by scorekeeper.

Roupp allowed 9 baserunners in 3.2, 5 runs/4 earned. Brewers never scored again though in 5.1 off succession of Giants pen guys Bivens Miller Rogers and Doval.

I’m still completely unsold on this new version of Doval. Started out with 6 straight balls. The radio guys were talking about his new slidestep but if he can’t throw strikes with it what good is it? With Doval, as soon as someone gets on base it feels like we are fucked…….

Just straighten out Walker’s mechanics. That’s the route I’d go first before we bring head case back regularly to close for us.

Walker may be hurt slightly, perhaps something minor like the (alleged) blister on Casilla’s finger that gave the closer job to Romo mid 2012. Anyway, I still think this pen is loaded with talent. I bet Bochy would love it. Surely Melvin can manage it, can’t he?

Bochy closer (Luke Jackson, 2 years with SF 2023-24) blew game yesterday to A’s, who took 2 of 3 from Rangers in Sac. Had been on streak of 7 consecutive saves before blowing one yesterday giving up 2 hits and BB in 9th.

    • xoot's avatar xoot said, on April 25, 2025 at 9:17 am

not as dramatic as two singles and a hbp and a double to start the ninth, but not entirely dissimilar either. A blown save is a blown save. It happens.

      • xoot's avatar xoot said, on April 25, 2025 at 9:18 am

and Walker did notch one SO on Wednesday.

  7. Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on April 25, 2025 at 9:28 am

here’s the other problem with Doval and it’s really not fair to him at all. If he implodes even once everyone with be like “get rid of this fuck.” Closers blow saves that’s true but Head Case has already burned up all the blownies he had to blow.

    • xoot's avatar xoot said, on April 25, 2025 at 9:38 am

the difference between the two head cases could not be more extreme. They both came up together, but Walker was drafted out of Washington State U, mature, and Doval out of DR, a teen. Doval has 23 siblings and half siblings back home (says wiki).

  8. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on April 25, 2025 at 9:58 am

Sure, but Doval had to save Walker’s mess the other day. I’m not saying Walker is out as the closer, but if there’s an issue with Walker, shut him the fuck down.

Don’t do this ‘he’s nursing something’ bullshit, because we will be in this situation for the next 3 weeks. I can live with Doval being the closer while Walker gets right. Better yet, score 5 more than your opposition.

    • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on April 25, 2025 at 10:59 am

“Better yet, score 5 more than your opposition.”

Boom! This solves all closer questions. Next issue . . .

I missed yesterday’s game but saw the highlights in a saloon. I never go to bars (or saloons) but I was with some folks on a trip to Murphys (an old gold rush town, now tourist area, in the Sierra foothills, for those of you out of state), and we had a nice lunch at the old Murphys Hotel, and then afterwards as I was walking past the old saloon in the hotel, I saw there was a big screen TV showing baseball. It was the post-game show, and I watched the flyball get dropped. Exciting for us Giants fans, but I felt a little sorry for the fielder; leftfield in that ballpark is a crushing sun-field during day games. The fielder is staring straight into the blazing fire of healthy sun that still has a billion years or so left in it.

    • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on April 25, 2025 at 12:21 pm

Fitzgerald woulda scored anyway on the sac fly. Hence the scorekeeper giving Adames an RBI.

  10. zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on April 25, 2025 at 12:00 pm

Walker has incredible movement on his pitches, but has trouble controlling the pitches lately. The last couple of games, he’s been pure Wiffle-ball.

The NBA playoffs are a bit meh for me. Other than the Warriors, there’s not much interesting happening. The league wants SGA, Edwards, and Wemby, and some other guys to be the new faces of the league; but they seem a notch lower in interest to me. I know I’ve said it so many times: this current style of play is just boring. The NBA probably knows that, but is probably not sure of what to do. I have a thought: take away the corner three-point shot. Have the three-point arc go into the sideline before the corner. The corner three is killing the sport. Guys just standing in the corners, waiting to hoist up threes. Boring!

    • willedav's avatar willedav said, on April 25, 2025 at 12:23 pm

Yeah Zum I’d agree with taking away corner 3. Weekend ago I was watching youth group travel teams play in local tournament including some guys I had coached. Surprised that even at 9th grade level (with shot clock) elite teams still play zone…and how NBA teams are often confused by zone D.

FIBA allows the defenders to stay in the key without any 3 second restriction like NBA does. I wonder what effect that would have in today’s game. Euro game seems to be thriving and so are their players that come here to play, college and pro.

I love the photo from 2013. I still have my sombrero! My 2012 championship t-shirt is worse for wear these days. Some of my favorite Giants shirts and hoodies are showing a lot of wear.

  13. willedav's avatar willedav said, on April 25, 2025 at 12:15 pm

Walker had 5 saves in a row before the L vs. Angels Sunday and had pitched 8 innings allowing 4 hits and 1 run. He’d walked 1 hit 1 and K’d 6.

  14. zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on April 25, 2025 at 12:21 pm

Of course, I have to mention the WNBA! The league has announced that almost every Fever game will be on a national broadcast. (The regular season is 40 games.)

The Fever have added Sophie Cunningham. Is she a good player? I have no idea. But she’s one of the players the league is marketing as eye-candy.

  15. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on April 25, 2025 at 12:27 pm

Well, MoTel is being cryptic about Walker’s availability 2 days in a row. Which for a closer isn’t kosher.

My sombrero bit the dust a while ago! Or it’s buried in my shed.

And thanks for the birthday wishes. All in all I’d rather these pass me by.

    Will you still need me

Will you still feed me . . .

  18. mrsprtdude's avatar mrsprtdude said, on April 25, 2025 at 2:01 pm

I would rather have Walker close. I saw an article in the Athletic re closers. 2 bad outings causes fanwide panic. A starter has 2 bad innings but otherwise doing well and everyone shrugs and he goes out again 5 days later. Every closer blows 6 a year on average. best closer EVER Rivera, had a 90% success rate. The mortals are closer to 85%. As an aside,,,Funny how no one ever mentions Rivera’s game 4 blown save vs Sox in 04, or blowing the 2003 WS to the Snakes:)

Hey Unca, happy birthday to ya, hope you’re having a good one.

Thanks, guys. All very low-key now.

Come on, Adames. E led to the run. Hey! runner back to 3rd.

I know there are Niners fans here. Niners got a compensatory / extra 3rd round pick. They drafted a cornerback. OK we need that right. He is FIVE EIGHT from Western Kentucky. WTF??

Heck of a play by Adames there.

Heh! Thanks! Low-key these days. That pic was the day Sandog and I found out our kids were dating. Still kinda blows my mind.

Man, we are getting shut down tonight. That Stout guy is supposed to be pretty good despite his size. Love the first 2 picks. Not crazy about the next two.

  26. Locojuan's avatar Locojuan said, on April 25, 2025 at 9:46 pm

Walker looked like he figured out his mechanical problem.

  27. Macdog's avatar Macdog said, on April 25, 2025 at 9:54 pm

Not the worst umpiring I’ve seen tonight — Mets got screwed that resulted in a triple play — but ruling that Lee K’d was pretty bad.
