Winning At Wrigley
I hopped in the car and turned on the radio just in time to hear Huff ground into a double play with the bases loaded. Lol. Things got better from there. Although you can’t get much worse than a Home to First Base double play with the bases loaded although I guess I’m happy he didn’t hit into a triple play.
Either way that was a very VERY night series win against a good team at their yard.
Of 12 series Giants have played to date, they’ve won 8, lost 3 and split 1 (Phillies). Keep winning series and avoid prolonged losing skids.
In my view expecting Giants to compete all year with LA & SD unrealistic. But wild card berth is distinct possibility if starting pitching remains strong and Melvin settles on best use of Walker/Doval/Miller/Rogers combo to close games.
and maybe Buster trades for a big first base rental bat at the break.
yes
well the Oaxaca Wonder is rehabbing. Presumably he’s working on 1B D.
Xoot, is it ok to refer to him as ‘OW? Or, should we wait to see if he has the power to put the ‘hurt’ on?
ha! Let’s hope he doesn’t make us wonder why he’s getting playing time. A big hurt is not likely but he may be better than wade’s minuscule sting.
A baseball number I check for Giants hitters is amount ABs per an extra base hit. Right now Ramos (1-10) Yaz Fitz Chapman (1-11) and Lee (best 1-8.5) are at top of list. Adames 1 every 13 (worse than Wade 1 for 12) Flores 1-14. Lee leads team in slugging pct at .490, Yaz 2nd at .470.
Off bench Matos 1-10.
In times of low offense all around baseball like now, power does mean a bit more. Dunno where Giants power will come from even in trade, but BA and OPS right now around 13th in NL.
the lost series to Cin and the season split don’t look so bad now that the reds have hit their stride. Angels loss was regrettable. Padres, more concerning. But a two game series merely. The Giants can beat anyone. So far.
misplaced reply. Sorry.
Yanks are in Sacramento this weekend. A’s as a team are 13th AL for runs allowed per game at almost 5 a game and team ERA of 4.50 also sits 13th. Supposed to be in 90s up there Friday and Saturday, cooling off Sunday for day game. See how this plays out.
I get prompt on phone for TA columns and one today asked if SD-NY 3 gamer was World Series preview. Yanks took 2 of 3, all games decided late.
A’s can’t even fill a 14,000 seat stadium. I’m sure they will for the Yankers tho.
Talking to a few people I know in Sac, attendance at A’s games in Sacramento has been lower than expected, raising questions about the team’s long-term viability, even in Sacramento. Not certain how long they planned on staying there, while Las Vegas construction continues . . . 3 years? 4 years? Dunno . . .
Surprised that the bloom is already off the rose in Sac for attendance.
I wonder how many Bay Area A’s fans regularly take the I-80 trek up there. Apparently, not enough.
No sympathy for A’s ownership. None.
Is that Vegas stadium still officially a thing? I thought it was in limbo financially and with plans, permitting, etc.?
Just my experience the last 2 years, but traffic has increased exponentially compared to the previous 3 I was living up there (as I may have noted here). Specifically, travel time to Sunnyvale, where I grew up – took 2 hours, 20-30 minutes from 2020 to 2023. Last 2 years, it takes 5 hours and 30 minutes on a week day and 3 and a half hours on a weekend. Ugh. Most of this is due to public (FEDs mostly) and private sector return to office policies. No way, no how, will California, much less the SF Bay Area, ever address this severely deficient infrastructure problem. Typically, I faced 5-6 traffic jams on the way to Sunnyvale: 2 in Sac/Elk Grove; 1 near 80 Benicia turnoff; 1 Walnut Creek; 1 where Sunol 680 construction project is taking place; and, 1 at Milipitas 237 turn off . . . Last one at Milpitas, was over an hour to go 15 miles to my Sunnyvale turn off.
This economic downturn isn’t helping things. They may end up back in Oakland.
that ain’t happening. Oklnd’s done. They’re averaging over 9k per home game this year. 11k last year in the E Coli.
Wade has inklings of starting to hit.
But, I think it’s obvious the guy has an uppercut going on. I don’t have the stats, but it seems he pops the ball up a lot for easy infield fly balls and lazy OF cans o’ corn. Rarely barrels, as some stat guy said last weekend speaking with Marty Lurie. Also, he seems to be behind in the count all the time, hunting for a walk I suppose. Giants just need way way more production from 1B, period. Wade ain’t gonna cut it, long term. The guy is good enough to + with the glove, but that is not rare. What’s rare is a wet noodle bat in the hands of your starting 1bman…
Again, I wish Wade had been traded last season or been a back up (ergo . . . we had signed Alonso when we had a chance). This McCovey Chronicle column came out today about him – see below. Just confirms what I thought – his bat speed is slowing down significantly and per the article, “. . . his Hard Hit rate of 28.8% is basically unplayable. His walk rate is down and his strikeout rate is up.”
Unfortunately, we’re stuck with him for the time being.

Nice link, blade. Thanks.
The Wade stats are freaking beyond horrendous. Not surprised that the stats show he rarely hits the ball hard — you can’t get hits doing that. No way you can go an entire season with essentially no offense coming out of 1B. Worst thing IMO is the trending — Down.
“…his early season percentages don’t match the last two years barely at all. His Hard Hit rate of 28.8% is basically unplayable. His walk rate is down and his strikeout rate is up.” …
It’s not the best situation with Wade for sure his power is gone, he does play a pretty solid 1B digging out a lot of throws from Chappy&Adames but with that drop in bat speed like Blade mentioned is disturbing along with his speed which is gone now as well..
However with all the RH pitching they face he’s still the best option at first.I think the Giants are right about Flores just DH the man only u don’t really want him at 1st.Villar should be the guy getting all starts against a lefty, maybe some against a Righty as well, he has power it’s his last shot so give him a chance imo..
AK, agree emphatically about Wilmer not playing 1st base. Flores is at his best, when he is well rested. We need his hitting. No idea how long it will last as he is in his 30s. However, he NEEDS to be well rested to be effective.
Wilmer can hit, and not much else.
I think I can run faster than he can, for 90 feet. He runs like a penguin with bunions …
Yep definitely agree Blade about Wilmer, he’s been fantastic a real clutch money hitter, but he will need a dayoff are 2, but for now while he’s producing at a high level the Giants will ride out his hot steak, his RISP among the best in baseball.
I have to admit he proved me wrong after last year I thought he was done, but got that surgery and rehabilitation Wilmer is back and I’m ecstatic for Mr. Ed he’s really barreling up with great AB’s he has been a huge part of the team’s early success, just get him some rest to keep that bat fresh!!
Way early, but Warriors are getting smoked by the ‘Wolves w/o Steph.
Think their happy to get the split for sure and get back home. They have been the best team in the NBA on defense after acquiring Butler to finish the season, which gives them 2 pitbulls Green&Butler
