A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Rested And Wilted

Letting Paddock just cruise into the 8th inning when he hasn’t been past 5 all season was embarrassing. Nice to see Harrison do his best Birddog impersonation. Maybe that’s just how these guys are going to get used this year.

Watched most of Yanks-A’s game where Yanks hit 5 doubles/4 HRs in 10-2 thrash. After leadoff walk to start game Judge hit first pitch he saw off top of the wall in LCF but that was only hit he got. Golds did hit one out and J Dominguez provided thump with 3 bombs/7 rbis.

There was column about how well Judge is doing in TA yesterday-OPS is over 1.200. Rest of team is at .720 iirc. Golds is over .800.

There was some weirdness in 5th. Yanks had runners on 1b (Rice) and 2b (Grisham) and fly ball was hit into short LCF where A’s CF dove for it and held up glove with ball in it. Replay showed he’d trapped it and Grisham had run to plate and scored. Call from ump was out; Rice had been halfway to 2b then stopped and went back toward 1b, where batter was already standing and waving him to 2b.

After the review, Grisham was put back at 3b and Rice was given 2b, which Boone objected to. Next batter hit sac fly to LF and Grisham scored anyway.

Day game up there today, where Sac is supposed to be in 90s.

seems to be something about Apple games that hexes Giants.

Curious to hear from those who saw game thoughts on Hicks.

Was down a run after first few pitches, then wobbled in 5th, throwing 28 pitches allowing 2 singles and run (error on Ramos no rbi) 1 HBP and 2 wild pitches. Came back out for 6th and got 3 up/3 down so only Harrison used from pen. 79 pitches 7 hits 3 runs all earned 0 BBs 6 Ks.

    • alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 said, on May 10, 2025 at 9:26 am

Willied,I thought Hicks actually pitched real well,6IP 7 hits,O walks 7K’s and was hitting 100 mph 2-3 times 99 consistently.Yeah even in the 5th they didn’t hit the ball hard just some bad luck bloops and yes another hack job by Ramos in LF bobbled a hit the runner would of stayed at 3rd on.He pitches in hard luck sometimes, and when you get no-hit for 5 2/3 that’s not on him,,

I know Melvin likes a guy like Birdsong and maybe now Harrison stretching him out, but these 2 are Starters imo, Hicks can still give u plus innings along with Roupp in the BP..

So I’ve been saying it and agree with P/A that starting unit should be Webb,Ray,Verlander,Harrison,Birdsong and I have it R/L/R/L/R combination!!

  3. Paul Sorensen's avatar Paul Sorensen said, on May 10, 2025 at 8:56 am

Personally I think both Birdsong and Harrison should be in the rotation. Webb Ray Birdie Harrison Verlander. Hicks and Ruopp can go to the pen or get spot starts. They seem like quality starters, I’d hate to see them “get used to” 2-inning appearances and it screws them up.

  4. bassbaldy's avatar bassbaldy said, on May 10, 2025 at 11:27 am

The thing with Hicks is that last year he was great out the gate and faded by mid-season. Over the off season Hicks and the Giants strategized how to rectify the    Issue. I think what we are witnessing is the results of whatever adjustments they’ve put in place. This year Hicks weak start has been concerning (5.82) but slowly and incrementally improving — era was well over 6 before yesterday’s start. Maybe we are seeing the ‘strategy’ working and, given some time, will produce the desired effect of Hicks lasting longer into the season. But, the trade off could be that he won’t be quite as effective has he was at the beginning of last season. He was near phenomenal then. I’d give Hicks a few more starts and see what he can do.

  5. xoot's avatar xoot said, on May 10, 2025 at 11:35 am

a very lucky DP got Hicks out of the first inning after he gave up a triple and a single. The later inning with the HBP and wild pitch was ugly. His stuff was good, though.

His first inning disasters are odd. How’s that translate to the pen? Can he come in and shut down? I think both Hicks and Harrison belong in the pen, however. Harry will blow his shoulder out again if he tries to throw a starter’s load of innings. My guess.

  6. mrsprtdude's avatar mrsprtdude said, on May 10, 2025 at 11:47 am

I’m going to call out Buster for this Harrison move. Early results show he figured something out re mechanics shown by his velocity back up to 95-86 range when he was 92-93 all last season. In 2022-3 he was a top prospect with #2 starter stuff. If he is back to that he should be starting. To call him up as a reliever makes no sense at all. he should still be in the minors. If he is a reliever for 3-4 more weeks until suckyness or injury opens a slot, his stamina for starting will be reduced. DUMB!

    • xoot's avatar xoot said, on May 10, 2025 at 12:02 pm

Harry’s high heat only works if it’s hot.

  7. bassbaldy's avatar bassbaldy said, on May 10, 2025 at 11:49 am

Further to that, Paul’s point stated above is well taken. We don’t want to screw up Bird & Harry. It’s probably easier to discombobulate them with this 2-innings-out-of-pen stuff than it is sending Hicks there permanently.

  9. alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 said, on May 10, 2025 at 12:39 pm

Hicks did add weight and extra muscle which he didn’t have last year and his stamina was lost once the heat started climbing and plus he’s diabetic so that has to be counted for..

Saw some chart that he’s right up their in velocity still can hit 100 just a matter of control which he did yesterday no walks, it’s the first inning like a lot of pitchers where he struggles. But going thru the 4th he only threw 29 pitches then 28 in the 5th? But a hbo, a couple cheap hits and Ramos Fizz hacking another play didn’t help him could of been 1 run, but wtf Giants are getting no hit by Paddack finally Koss broke it up and Chapman hit one out in the 7th and that’s it ,offense still out of wack!!

Huh, through first 3 innings in Sac the A’s had the only 2 HRs and led Yanks 4-0. Yanks have 1 hit, single by Golds, and Rodon has thrown 58 pitches so far.

Then Judge put first pitch of 4th 90 mph fastball from J P Sears into RCF seats, his 13th.

Unfortunately, the team hitting is looking like last year’s lackluster squad. Maybe it’s because most of this year’s squad is the same as last year’s group. Wade is just disastrous at the plate. Pop ups galore, the rare barreling up.

Wade: BA .154 and .512 OPS in 104 ABs.

Do you make a move if he doesn’t improve by the 150 AB point? DFA him, he’ll go down to Sac since nobody else will take him, he can work on “things”. Meanwhile put Villar over at 1B — he’s hitting over the Mendoza line and has some pop. Irrelevant to me that he’s RH hitter, at this point of a disastrously unproductive 1B hole, so far…

Subtract Ramos’s 3 hits, basically a combined 1 hitter by the Twins pitching staff. Wade is only the tip of the iceberg regarding the Giants hitting woes. We have 5 of 9 hitters with a combined batting average below .220, two of whom, the aforementioned Wade and Bailey – both hitting below the Mendoza line. The 2 supposed “catalysts” for this team, Chapman and Adames, part of the .220 and below grouping.

I don’t see any reinforcements via Sacramento, nor via trade.

    • willedav's avatar willedav said, on May 11, 2025 at 6:26 am

Tip of iceberg is spot on. Game before Giants couldn’t even get anyone into scoring position. Wade’s last AB he at least advanced Ramos to 3b with deep fly ball from where he was promptly picked off. Even Lee is struggling as BA has dropped way off from when he was hitting .350.

Pitching and D is only going to go so far. April seems like mirage.

      • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on May 11, 2025 at 6:54 am

Agree about Lee Willie . . . I almost mentioned him (regarding slowing down), but I thought that would be piling on. Compared to everyone else on the team, he’s been Babe Ruth (I kid, I kid) with 4 hits, 3 runs, 1 bomb, and 4 RBIs in his last 25 ABs.

      • xoot's avatar xoot said, on May 11, 2025 at 7:08 am

Lee’s focus and precise execution of fundamentals may rub off. Hope so.

      • willedav's avatar willedav said, on May 11, 2025 at 7:46 am

Lee is my fav hitter by far. 0-12 since 3 hit game vs. Cubs 4-22 last 5.

Btw Eldridge at .278, 15-54 with 3 HRs .825 OPS

Also 3 errors at 1b in 11 games. B/R page lists fielding as well, and last season at 1b was ugly–15 errors btw Low A and High A ball in 85 games.

as to Lee, his overall game is precise, disciplined, hyper aware. Tv doesn’t show it enough because there are so few fuck ups to replay in slo mo. Unlike Heliot’s gaffe yesterday, eg. Lee as far as I’ve been able to see knows exactly what’s happening every moment the ball’s in play.

  26. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on May 10, 2025 at 10:59 pm

Well, this is what so many of us were saying in the offseason. They didn’t do nearly enough to bolster the hitting. Wade being the glaring problem at 1st is worse than I imagined it would be.

  27. alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 said, on May 11, 2025 at 9:43 am

Well you could take a flier on Anthony Rizzo who still thinks he’s worth a big contract over the minimum every interested team offered.Hard pass rather keep Wade he still has value short term, they really don’t have a choice, I would give Villar more starts, but facing more RH pitchers then Lefty’s doubt the Giants do that it’s always the dreaded L-R matchups..

As much as people want Eldridge up the kid is far from ready, just getting back in shape from his wrist injury,he’s still at AA before he will likely move to AAA soon, but his glove work has a long way to go,and will struggle with it in the beginning with the Giants for sure, but I’ll trade some errors for a power bat 1B anytime

    • bassbaldy's avatar bassbaldy said, on May 11, 2025 at 10:49 am

yeah Kat, pursuing Rizzo would be a waste, I agree. Eldridge ain’t gonna save us either. We gotta work in-house. Schmidt should be good to go in couple of weeks and he was ok at 1st base although another weak bat (so far) in that position won’t change much.

        Hey W,

Something I’ve found striking is some of the new releases of old jazz recordings from that period have outtakes included. Timings on those is what is so interesting. Different takes on the same tune will time in at almost precisely the same times length. Eg. If first take of track is 2:47, 2nd take is at 2:46, 3rd at 2:48. They play exactly same arrangement, same solo order and length. To have a 1 or 2 second difference in length of track is incredible. It shows how strong the players of that generation’s sense of rhythm was. These days with click tracks and quantization of beats it is relatively simple do this but back then they only had their internal ‘clocks’ to rely upon. Humbling.

Totally agree. That’s the most detestable rule change ever!

    Giants need a bat. Badly.

Walker’s closer expiration date looks looming…

      Or more ghost runners.

Yep a .067 hitter beats them as they get swept. Chappy had a runner easily nailed at the plate but bobbled it and all down hill from there..
