A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Bird Dog Tonight

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on May 20, 2025

After a three game stretch of scoring 10/7/8 runs we dipped back to our predictable 1/3/1 in the last 3. Ugly offense. Though there’s never any shame in getting shut down by a good Stanford lad, this time it was Bubic.

So how to explain “soft toss blues” as xoot put it vs. LHP? Melvin’s lineup has 8 RHs, minus Yaz Wade Jr and Bailey. The 2 highest salaried guys hitting 4-5 went 0-7 with couple Ks and numerous pop ups; one is hitting .219 the other .216. Out of the 6 hits they did get, Schmitt Huff and Wade Jr. (3 guys that could easily be off the team by end of the month) had 3 of them and Flores gift was another. Maybe that one sent baseball gods into I’ll show you zone.

Schmitt is actually worth hoping on.

    • willedav's avatar willedav said, on May 20, 2025 at 8:48 am

Sure. Encarnacion can be activated in a week iirc. Unsure how well either of them can handle 1b defensively, and Flores best position might be DH. Schmitt came up as 3b and at least could spell Chapman for an occasional day off.

Bryan Murphy had a column at MCC that mentioned Matos as guy that could be replaced. Column was titled “who do Giants need to make a decision about next?” and thought McCray (on a hot streak in Sac) was best in house option to take his roster spot. McCray is another LH though.

Don’t know if anyone caught Kuiper comment about Finnerty’s (SF sports bar) in 4th inning of last night’s game. Kuip referenced new location across street from Empire State Building. I’ve passed by Finnerty’s on walk from office to Penn Station but haven’t gone inside though my son and I are committed to having burger and beer there sometime this year.

I had a quick drink there in March. It felt like any other place. Might take em awhile to get the old vibe back. Very different layout. Didn’t notice much SF stuff on the walls…

I knew they were bad against lefties, but sheesh.

    Per KNBR today:

    24-9 vs. RHP.

3-11 vs. LHP. And, 2 of the 3 were against the A’s this past weekend. That means against LHP that wasn’t A’s, the G’s are 1-9. Ouch.

This is team wide, pretty much except Lee and Fitzgerald. I assume they’re trying to figure this out, but this is more than a fluke. Teams with LHP are going to load up against them…

    Giants have recycled thru,Villar,Schmitt,McCray,Luciano,Meckler,Wisely,etc..

They rank 28th in all farm systems so obviously they stink in developing hitters with only Eldridge their only clear prospect. They only seem to develop pitching which they should package for a 1B until Eldridge is ready for next season..

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on May 20, 2025 at 11:38 am

To me, there is no excuse for the Giants continual, years – no, decades long– inability to consistently produce top notch minor league position players. Top notch meaning all around skills — glove, running, and yes, hitting and with power…

There was story couple days ago MLBTR linked to about 1b the Red Sox might look at given Devers situation and injury to Casas. Guy mentioned was Rhys Hoskins, currently on year 2 of $34 million deal (with options) for Brewers. Brewers currently sit 4th in NL Central at 23-25 5 games back of Cubs. cbs projects them to be 82 W team, about 6-7 short of wild card.

Hoskins has 5 bombs in 43 games this season slash line .285/.389/.445.

Um, Brewers signed him after phils let him go in off season. Last year: .214/.303/.419, 26 HRs 82 rbis in 131 games. Thoughts?

    • willedav's avatar willedav said, on May 20, 2025 at 2:33 pm

He turned 32 this March. Born in Sac, played HS ball for Jesuit of Carmichael and college ball for Hornets of Sac State. Missed all of 2023 season with ACL injury, but 2022 with Phils hit 30 HRs 79 rbis slash line .246/.332/.462.

      • xoot's avatar xoot said, on May 20, 2025 at 4:05 pm

he’s the one I’ve seen mentioned as a target who makes sense to me. Pretty early in the season for a move like that.

      • willedav's avatar willedav said, on May 20, 2025 at 5:09 pm

Right. Brewers aren’t out of playoff race this early…by deadline maybe different story.

    • bassbaldy's avatar bassbaldy said, on May 20, 2025 at 3:15 pm

He seems to fit the bill Willedav. What are your thoughts on Rizzo. I like him because he played against Posey and probably had great respect for him, might gives G’s a discount to be part of a potentially competitive team?

      • willedav's avatar willedav said, on May 20, 2025 at 3:25 pm

idk much about Rizzo…last couple years with Yanks didn’t go so well. dunno about injuries.

I do think it’s not going to be as easy as fans think for Posey to find a trade partner that will be good fix for Giants 1b problem. Who will be good enough to help/from what non contending team willing to let go of such a player.

Didn’t take to long for the usual breakdown of Justin Verlander, after his last start struggling to get thru 4 innings , he now says he’s dealing with a Pectoral Injury and the Giants are leaving it up to him with a few days rest? Umm ok, except an IR stint soon as Harrison moves into the rotation? Could also callup Whisenhut( PCL player of the week with 2 straight lights out starts to work out of the BP in long relief)

And yes I got the Jaylin Davis dig Loo, really thought he could be special I was obviously wrong 😑

    • djloo27's avatar djloo27 said, on May 20, 2025 at 5:49 pm

Well they never gave him a real chance (68 career PA as a Giant).

  9. bassbaldy's avatar bassbaldy said, on May 20, 2025 at 3:09 pm

maybe pry Belt outta retirement.😉 Betcha he still has a glove. Probably hit .200 (as good as our in house options)

  10. willedav's avatar willedav said, on May 20, 2025 at 3:12 pm

Eldridge watch: Hit 3 HRs last week, 5 on season 14 rbis in 80 ABs, 25 Ks.

.288/.367/.538 for .905 OPS. Also made another error, 4th in 16 games at 1b.

Found this interesting in SF Chron story about Lee by Shayna Rubin: “Having slightly scaled down pursuit in Pacific Rim after a few swings and misses on Japanese stars such as Yoshhinobu Yamamoto, Posey and the front office are ramping up efforts again. He and Minasian recently traveled to Japan to get Posey acquainted with NPB.”

  26. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on May 20, 2025 at 8:37 pm

    Nice 5 frames by Birdie.

Difficult to imagine how much better the Gs would be if they had even a .230 hitter with a .325 Slg instead of Wade. He rarely, rarely squares it up. Pop ups galore, and wimpy grounders, like this last one with RISP. Time to pull the DFA trigger and get somebody in there who hits better than MadBum did. I don’t care if he hits a walk off tonight, he’s had plenty of rope, and he’s about two weeks away from suffering the usual hammy pull that puts him effectively out the rest of the season…

  27. xoot's avatar xoot said, on May 20, 2025 at 9:00 pm

wtf did adames get in the way of Ramos’s good throw to 2B?

    • alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 said, on May 20, 2025 at 9:13 pm

Throw was off line to 2nd Xoot no chance to throw out the runner that’s why Adames cut it..

Nice job by believe it are not Doval holding the speedster Witt with a quick move and Bailey gunning him down! 3-2 Giants trying to hold on…

      • xoot's avatar xoot said, on May 20, 2025 at 9:20 pm

I don’t think it was off line. Could be wrong but they didn’t show much of the field. I other runner to worry about. Someone was backing up Fitz

  29. willedav's avatar willedav said, on May 20, 2025 at 9:09 pm

wow that’s 2 caught stealing tonight from Bailey and Adames, in 1 run game. I don’t care what Bailey hits. What he has done for pitching staff that is in top 3 NL for fewest runs against and ERA, plus gunning down all these runners, is plenty enough.

  30. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on May 20, 2025 at 9:19 pm

OK, Gyros unable to add on, so it’s up to Walker. Too bad Doval could not K Witt, but Witt is arguably the best player in MLB. His little dink dribbler was bad luck for Gyros…

Best BP in baseball now with an ERA of .263!

Congrats to Birdsong 5 stellar innings for the win,BP took over from there and Patrick Bailey nailing 2 base runners were huge! He’s thrown out 12 runners now, like Willied mentioned the way he frames pitches, every pitcher on the staff praise him, his bat would only be a bonus but not like his defense saving runs!Yeah I might be bias but he’s the best catcher in baseball behind the dish.
