A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Verlander Down

….with a pectoral nerve issue. That doesn’t sound good. Didn’t last season get derailed for him because of a nerve issue in his neck? Either way, the best 0 win pitcher in MLB is down and that doesn’t help us at all. Hicks back in? Or does Dirty Harry get a shot?

I’d say bring up Whisenhunt, but the poor fellow might get his fragile ego crushed by trying to make the show. I mean, he’s at the tender age of 24. He needs more seasoning, amirite?

Cain and Bum debuted at 20. Tim was 22. Joe Nuxhall was 15. Bring em up. Already seen Hicks…

Probably only 2 starts. If it’s Harrison that gets them then they probably add pen guy capable of going longer than an inning. If it was Whisenhunt then he’d probably go back down anyway, right? Look we aren’t talking about next Marichal 1 hitting the Phils in his debut.

But this should be Posey GM Melvin decision on how best to sort out rotation and no one else.

Trivia: Who got the only hit?

      • willedav's avatar willedav said, on May 22, 2025 at 8:48 am

Ha, yeah light hitting C Clay Dalrymple. I was listening to that game on radio. Have to look up his career BA lol.

Not as bad as I thought, .234 in 9 years for Phils. Still alive too at age 88. No mention of what he did vs. Marichal July 19 1960 debut in brief scan of SABR bio.

Happy to report that it’s mentioned in paragraph 22 of his SABR bio. I would think Dalrymple made damn sure of it…

Ah yeah got it Loo, right where it’s talking about his success as PH. He did pinch hit for starting C that day, and ruined Marichal no hitter with 2 outs in top 8th.

    Fun Fact:

Terry Forster who Giant fans remember as the guy who gave up the Morgan HR in ’82 holds the distinction of having the highest lifetime BA of any MLer with at least 50 career AB or 15 big league seasons. He batted .397 (31-78).

It’s no problem for the Dogpile to release C Austin Barnes but the Giants won’t eat the 4M (part of his 2Year deal at 8.25 M under Farhan)still owed for are useless Catcher Tom Murphy picking up a paycheck every couple weeks!

hopefully he gets his back sorted out and he can come back in the 2nd half. Dude has big power when healthy

Thing about Whisenhunt is he’s being used as a starter in Sacto. Harrison has been a pen guy all year.

Course, he ain’t on the 40-man so therefore he stays.

    • xoot's avatar xoot said, on May 22, 2025 at 12:58 pm

I read they have two open spots on the 40.

Cursory look at Nats shows they have almost dead equal OPS numbers as Giants do. Problem is pitching, with team ERA over 5.00. Only teams worse are Marlins and Rox.

Giants face LHP MacKenzie Gore first, former Padres prospect who came over in Soto trade. He’s been better at home (2.92 ERA) than on road. Ks lot of guys, 35 in 24 innings at home vs. 5 BBs.

Struck out 84 in 56 innings which leads NL.

So, a loss. Welllll, he does throw a lot of fastballs so maybe there’s hope.

May not be the soft-toss blues.

Could be tough sledding against Nats Mackenzie Gore as the Giants are 4-11 against Lefthand starters and hitting only .220 for the season. Then you add the Tigers the next stop up against Lefty Tarik Skubal and this could turn into a rough road trip..

    • djloo27's avatar djloo27 said, on May 22, 2025 at 4:46 pm

Former Giant lefty Ken Mackenzie was born in Gore Bay, Canada.

      What are the odds?

Another golden nugget pull out of his hat 🎩 for Loo! The pride of Gore Bay Canadá 🇨🇦 and a cup of coffee with the SF Giants in 64..

Here’s another Trivia fact about Ken Mac Kenzie

He was the only NY Mets pitcher in their inaugural 1962 season (40-120) that had a winning record at 5-4 !! To me that’s some major bragging rights lol 😂
