Taming Tigers
We are very good against right handed pitching. That bodes well for us vs Detroit who I don’t think is as good as their record. Missing Skoobie helps our cause. That man is a legit beast.
I’m tired of talking about Ken Mackenzie.

Well it’s time Skip Pitlock got a little run here…
Yeesh. Giants have now lost six games giving up 3 runs or less this month, scoring 5 total runs in those losses.
Well it’s time Skip Pitlock got a little run here…
gotta love the high school he went to: Immaculate Conception High, in Illinois. You might be surprised to learn that he’s the only one from that fine institution to make it to the show.
Looks like Tigers went shopping in Brebbia aisle.
Doubt they’re very happy with results. He has an ERA of 5.65 out of pen and has given up 8 runs and couple bombs in last 5 innings of work.
Skip Pitlock actually hit a home run in his MLB career. Would love to see that boxscore…..
https://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/SFN/SFN197008080.shtml
Off Wade Blasingame who I refuse to believe wasn’t related to Don…
Thanks Mac, love these old boxes. Don McMahon was still pitching at 40 years old in 1970? yeow
Pretty good Giants lineup (except for Lanier), but Hart playing LF I don’t remember
Charlie Fox managing then?
What a comeback, Willie walks it off with a 2-run single.
Yep 1970 was first Giants team I really paid attention to. Fox was the manager.
Tigers’ starter has gotten hammered last few times out. Giants, on paper, have the advantage between 2 young hurlers. The AL is hitting over .300 on this guy’s fastball and on his breaking ball. They need to get some runs today, this Tiger team scores, a lot…
Of course the idiot Tiger announcer had to say that the ball bouncing over the fence was a bad break like it ever isn’t…
My goodness, Matos is still such a hack with the glove. Terrible routes to the ball, late jumps, etc.
If he had half the defensive instincts of Lee, he’d be a lot better. I assume they’re working on it, did he not work on the OF in Winter Ball? How do you get to the big leagues and continue to hack it up so much in the OF?. I’ll give him some slack due to the fact that Melvin rarely plays him. I just heard Ritzo say he’s played in only 3 games in 2+ weeks. Hard to get better with that kind of playing time. Gs are between a rock and a hard place with the kid, the can’t keep yo yoing him to Sac, but how’s he going to get better with the glove if he sits for a week at a time?…
Don’t see much evidence he’s a MLB player.
He’s approaching 500 ML PA and it’s only getting worse…
Birdie is singing. Gyros need to score some runs for him…
Sigh, 11 in a row set down by this chump.
3 hop throw to plate with chance to get baserunner. yikes
Soto did that last week vs. Yanks, buddy said that was $250,000,000 per hop.
what was the stat cast speed on that rolling throw from matos, 80 mph?
Now Matos with a laughable throwing error, luckily didn’t lead to more trouble. The kid, as they say, must have a low baseball IQ, an inability to imagine what play he’ll need to make in the situation at hand if he has to handle a play. So, he seizes up when called upon.
I’ve heard Pat the Bat on more than one occasion on KNBR say how much he thinks of this kid’s upside. I must be missing something. Ramos is no gazelle out there in left, but sheesh, if I’m pitching, I want to keep balls from heading out to LF…
go get him Baez! I think he could’ve clubbed Cuzzi with that helmet he waved if he really had it in him.
Phil Cuzzi — another ump that is the answer to the question: Do we need the balls/strikes robot ump?
What would he have done if they didn’t hold him back?
That’s what I would ask Baez in the PG…
Damn Adames GIDP.
Adames is our Juan Soto, except he smiles a lot…
Flores gets ball in the air for another ribbie and Giants score. Adames puts ball on ground for inning ending GIDP.
You don’t pay $180 million just for a “great clubhouse guy”.
I hope Adames doesn’t turn into a massive Buster Bust. So far, so not very good…
Surprised that stadium is not full (31k) on Memorial day, along with how well, the Tigers are doing. Stadium holds 47.1k.
really starting to look & feel like the same boring offense as last year.
Giants still have a pretty un-athletic passel of position players. I’d like to know how their OFers rank as a group in MLB in WAR. Can’t be better than low in the top half, can it?
Giants have a top 5 pitching staff, mitigated by nearly bottom third team OPS (21st OPS, with OPS+ at 17th), and top third (10th) in most strikeouts suffered. Even with the great pitching, I don’t see how they’ve managed to be where they are in the standings. IMO there’s no way they can count on this kind of pitching all season, and keep in the marginal playoff hunt with the poor hitting. They have to get at least one bat, preferably two. Plus, Adames and Chapman have to raise their averages at least into the .230 – .240 range and get that SLG up. If Flores gets hurt or tanks, fuhgedaboutitt, and that’s scary …
before today. Teams by bWAR:
https://www.baseball-reference.com/leagues/team_compare.cgi
so many fucking pop outs!
Flores continues to hit, amazing.
Do you pinch run for him now, in the 9th? I would…
Never mind, he’s out at second by a whisker on the Adames usual grounder…
Hanging curve on an 2-0 count and Chappie pops up.
This offense is blehhhh.
Without Flores we are in Sherpa territory.
SS made a good play at 2nd on that slow grounder to him.
Yes, and if there were a pinch runner in for Flores, that might have been a no-play at second, and we might have had runners on at first and second…
Yes.
We got like 6 pitchers in this batting order.
Exactly.
Wade watches a non-takeable close 3-2 pitch in that situation to K. He’s afraid to swing. Horrendous.
Give me Madbum to hit instead of Wade. Every time.
If we had any offense we’d be 5 games up
Wade, coupled with zero luck, strikes out . . . followed by a Fitz game ending out. Pfffttt.
This was the game to win for the Gs in this set. Tigers weak starter has been rocked lately, so today the Gs roll in and he miraculously turns into Cy Young…
Tigers are a better hitting version of the Giants…
Season now exactly a third done, so you can multiply a lotta things by 3 for projections…
lowest single season position player WAR of all time is -4. That record may be within Wade’s reach. Theoretically.
Don’t want to play part of broken record but Giants have now scored 0 or 1 run in 7 of past 16 games. Lost 6 of those 7 games. The offense is anemic. Another good pitching effort wasted.
I was disappointed in Birds myself. 88 pitches (4.1 so he got 13 guys out) and he couldn’t get out of the 5th. too many pitches out of zone, nibbling with off speed. Very last guy he faced, with one on already and behind in count he throws off speed pitch in dirt for ball 4. This guy has 97-98 heat–throw more strikes with it, pls.
I know he has lot of potential but imo he’s trying to be too fine. Look at his game logs even out of pen this year and about every other one features high pitch count/ineffective outing.
If only for shit and giggles, the Giants should keep an eye on 1b Biggio, where the Royals have optioned him to triple A Omaha – he has to make a decision whether to consent to this or be a free agent. This, along with what I said 3 days ago, about making a trade for Luis Robert Jr., whom the White Sox are likely to move.
Per B/R WAR going into today Giants 3 OFs are 2nd on team (Lee) 3rd (Yaz) and 5th (Ramos). Chapman is #1, Fitz 4th. Adames and Wade Jr. are in minus land, Bailey barely above and Flores would be 6th.
The problem children are on IF. I think it would be great to add another OF and it shouldn’t be difficult to find one better than Matos. McCray at least can run and play decent CF, with some power when he does make contact. A better more experienced hitter of course would be big help.
I think the bWAR stats I linked above listed Giants at 11th in mlb for all OF
Overall 1.1 WAR, pitching 1.4. offense sucks.
Re Birdsong.. He could have gotten out of the 5th! he likely couldn’t be worse than giving up the 2 runners on base he left out there:(
Fair enough, and Miller did eff things up after he left with wildness. Pitch count ate him up though. He threw 15 that inning and only got one out. K single wild pitch walk.
Well, get used to the pitchers needing to hold teams to 2 or less to get the win.
Wade is just unwatchable at this point. They have to have someone who can do more than him.
Not that it really matters much… Article on ESPN site asks 4 *experts* — Of the 6 NL teams currently leading divisions or in the wildcard slots, which ones will make the postseason. They all pretty much said all of those teams except the Giants. If the FO doesn’t do something with the offensive offense situation, those experts, sadly, will be right.
