Hoping For Hope
Bringing JerarE back aboard is fine but it’s silly to think he’s going to be some type of offensive savior. We could bring Skip Pitlock back for a few pinch hits and hope for a second career bomb too, but is that a reasonable move? I honestly think I’d rather see Pitlock take some at bats away from Wade at this point. Speaking of The Skipper I reached out to him to ask him about that solo dinger but didn’t hear back.
The best thing about JerarE coming back COULD be the the df’A of Late Night Lamonte which is so past overdue, there are no words to describe…..
Jerar’s defensive debts may cancel his offensive assets but let’s see. And let’s work on a big mid season move. But no mas LaMonte.
and of course LaMonte starts at 1B today. Why? Schmitt can’t do worse.
Didn’t see much after first couple innings that didn’t go Webb’s way and flores got tough break on long ball he hit to wall. Baseball is hard even for best players–just read story in TA about Tatis Jr. who got off to great start but was having awful May, hitting .184 with .620 OPS and 25 Ks in 22 games. He agreed problems were both mechanical and mental.
not making excuses for Wade Jr. but yes he’s hardly the only problem and just bringing back Encarnacion won’t solve much. “Tip of the iceberg” I think was how Blade put it.
Saw story in Chron that said something about (lack of) running game. Fitz (who leads them with 6) said he got red light couple times. Melvin quotes make it seem like he’s more into running when Giants have lead as opposed to when they are behind in game.
iirc 70% is about cut off rate (might be higher idk) for whether SBs actually help team or not. Giants currently 26-12 so right around there as a team.
Like I said at the end of the thread last night, this could be a good to outstanding road trip, if they can beat Detroit today; and, then win 2 of 3 or sweep the crappy Marlins. All of this is doable.
June will be where the Giants “separate the wheat from the chaff,” i.e., show the league, fans, and MLB experts that they’re for real and not an “also ran.”
Wade Jr would of been a “Superstar “ back in 1978 at 1B after McCovey combination of age (40) and was injured ( played 108 games) the Giants thought they had his replacement in Skip James “The Albino Wonder” at 1B..
I went to a lot of games that year with some buddies and we ragged on him hard he couldn’t even hit batting practice pitchers!
i got a skip James autograph on a napkin
it had like 6 names on it. Off the top of my head it was Skip James, Joe Altobelli, Joe Petini….I think Daryl Evans…I’m forgetting the other guys.
I remember Mike ivie at 1B in 78. Saw him whiff vs the bums in my first visit to Candlestick. Bases loaded, too. McCovey cast some shade his way iirc. He’s no phenom. Something like that.
the great blues man Skip James eventually received royalties from Cream’s cover of Im So Glad. 1B Skip? No recall.
Ivie! He was on that napkin too. I lost in several years ago. Pissed about that
Yeah the Giants actually went 89-73 in 78 good for only 3rd place under The Italian Sausage Joe Autobelli a fun manager. They had Madlock3B,LeMaster SS, Evans mostly 1B/LF ,out field of The Ripper Jack Clark,Terry Whitfield,Larry Herndon all young ,all good,They had Vida,Knepper(17-11) that year,The Count of Montofusco ( sp) ,Lavelle&Minton in the pen they did well overall, hell winning 89 games usually would get it done except for the freaking Dodgers& maybe Braves?
in August they were still battling the bums for first place.
uh oh. No mas LaMonte may remain on the 26 for a while.
If he homers, it might mean a place of the Wall of Fame, and Eldridge is blocked for the next 2 years…
wow! Offense .. whatta concept.
Amazing, Wade with a good sac bunt. That’s two productive ABs in a row !
Wow.
Men bunted to 2nd and 3rd, one out. Then, two straight Ks. Not even contact to make the Tigers make a play. Huff, Koss — talent just isn’t there…
2nd&3rd one out after a Wade sac bunt but then you have Huff&Koss back to back K’s geez why are these chumps even playing? Atleast Roupp is dealing 7 K’d but 1-0 is not enough!Since they have only scored 2runs the first 2 games..
Vamos!
Ramos Blasted that Homer 426 ft 111 bat speed!
love the homers. Who doesn’t? Sure would like to see more small ball consistency. Like that last inning with the Huff & Koss fail, gotta fix that.
Flemmig is so dumb:I think you can say Ramos might be their best player this year?Well Yeah Dumbshit he hits the ball harder then any other Giant and now has 10 HR’s..
Ramos homer was great. But, this team can’t rely on homers all season to bail it out of it’s scoring woes. The bottom third of the lineup is an disaster area, and the top 6 spots are nothing special, not a lot of power or average there. Two real bats are needed, at least one at 1b, desperately.
A — freakin’ — Men to that Snarkk!
I stepped away for less than a minute. Negative Nellie that I am, I thought .. ugh, it’s probably 3-2 now .. sure nuff.
Yeah as usual the Giants leave to many on base they can’t get in, 3-0 is now 3-1 Roupp knocked out and they have 2nd&3rd no outs, Need Randy Rodriguez to come through now ..
no harm, no foul says pence after a two run no out double. He’s regressed. Dull and even malaprop cliches are his trade now.
Rodriguez isn’t perfect today. I miss his negative fip days earlier in the season.
Tigers get done what the Giants could not. That rally started with an error, which you can’t do against really good teams. Maybe Gs can rally somehow, but I wouldn’t bet on it…
the one day our hitters to ever so gently pull their collective heads outta their asses our pen decides to … oh, what’s the point? Ballgame?
Well, could not expect Wade to have 3 productive ABs in a row.
Another pop out…
Jerar is DH for Sac today; Luciano for the first time in his career is at 1B. Desperation days.
Missed most of the game due to a Dr. appt. Now watching, but just from reading the thread, I knew they were behind . . . again.
That’s the Giants we know so well Strikeouts and Popups!
Fleming still begging that Chapman’s error should have been a hit lol 😂 it was an obvious error Dave own up to it!!
No shit AK . . . You’re spot on, as the Tigers broadcasters just showed a replay and ONLY a blind man could say that wasn’t an error.
Ex-Giant great Brebbia takes down Chapman on a routine fly…
Another leadoff hit, followed by a DP that’s the Giants we know so well!
Lee draws a walk and 3for 3 Chapman a lazy fly ball out that Brebbia Aisle got him on ..
Jesus, that EMS guy needs Weight Watchers
Yeah that’s EMS guy is packing atleast 350 lbs and thank god he didn’t try and get in the cart he would of flipped it over Blade..
HAHAHAHAHA! Too fucking funny AK! Good one.
few more seasons and Tyler Rogers will take his place eith legends like lavelle and Minton.
that injured grounds worker just flipped off the camera. Funny.
my sons second grade teacher was on the Giants grounds crew for a while. We used to cheer him on between innings. Those guys hustled.
Heads up running by Wade.
that’s a big big run says Hunter as no run scores. Ninety feet was probably the cliche that eluded him.
What a cluster fuck of an inning.
How pathetic was that again for this team 2nd&3rd no outs Bailey short fly to LF no Good, Freaking Koss are you kidding me 2 straight bunts foul then K’d and Yaz feeble ground out! And that’s your Giants highlight from Speedy oil change..
2nd and 3rd, nobody out. We know that’s the danger zone for the G’s offense.
Can’t score. Predictable and Absolutely pathetic.
Now Walker hits the leadoff guy.
Time for roster moves…
What happened? We were up 3-0.
Whatever it was, we suck.
Sounds like a error led to the bad inning. And we left runners on.
Same as it ever was.
So much for the Buster effect.
And that closes out a Sweep for the Tigers as the Giants continue to look like a cluster fuck of a team..
That was great Blade funny as hell , your SF Giants in full blowup mode!!
damn, guy looks a bit like Posey in catcher’s gear.
lol . . . fucking eh, he does. I never noticed that before.
James, Petini, Altobelli, Ivie, Whitfield and I think Darryl Evans. Those were the 6 I remember on the napkin. Wish I still had that napkin
maybe things will get so bad that Posey sez fuck it, I’m coming outta retirement! He probably can still hit better than Bailey or Wade .. play a little 1st base, mostly DH ..😋
Bailey swingin at the first pitch for a pop up, then Coss desperately trying to not strike out by trying to bunt twice on change-ups, but failed, and K’d anyway. The desperation in both was what put me over the edge…
y’all remember last season when we’d joke that if we had RISP, we were doomed? We’d pray for basses loaded walk or an error by our opponents, seemed the only way we could plate a fucking run .. remember that? Here we are again reciting our Yogi mantra: “deja vu .. etc”
Roupp ala Birds faceplants in 5th after 80 pitches. Eerily similar, walk to Gleyber Torres ruins inning. Sure chapman error to start inning hurt but after that he allowed next 3 more guys on base. Walking Torres, throwing him 4 curveballs (only 1 for a strike) is same BS that did Birds in. Error made 3 of runs unearned but that’s totally misleading.
Saw brief postgame with him and he admitted he has to throw strikes. Ya think? All these young stud guys with 95+ heat trying to be Greg Maddux drives me crazy.
Verlander at least goes down throwing the heat, after more pitches and more innings, and battles.
As usual Willedav, you are making me think. Thank You! Checking box score, our collective pitching effort produced 16ks. That’s pretty good, I think?!? Sure, young arms are struggling to go deep in games, but sheesh, the hitting (especially so RISP) seems to be the gigantic red flag flapping in the breeze here.
We totaled 12 runs in the six games vs Nats & Det. One step back to the KC series gave us total 20 runs in the 3 series/9games. Including KC we were just over 2 runs per. Looking at only the Nat & Det series we’ve slipped to 2 runs. 2 runs per game ain’t gonna cut it bro!
Oh yeah, definitely. Finding couple bats from trade market though I think will be lot tougher than fans think. How many really good hitters on chump non contending teams are really available to be Giants next Marco Scutaro? Firing hitting coach is one of lamest moves any struggling team makes.
my fantasy as manager for a day is handing ball to the SP and telling him, “by the way I disconnected the phone to the pen. so you’re going 9 today.”
Absolutely right on W. Finding a quality bat through trade markets is probably a fantasy .. and as we say every year, we got no one to trade that anyone wants. Didn’t Texas fire their hitting coach a few weeks ago? I was surprised by that move considering the HC was probably Bochy’s hand picked guy. And (Ha!) love your managerial strategy. I bet Webb & Verlander (when healthy) wouldn’t flinch .. they’d be like, “yeah, now you’re talking, Let’s Go!”
Hey all, the other day Blade mentioned that his favorite player is Bobby Witt Jr. I LOVE me some BWJr, no doubt. Yet, my all around current player favorite is Jose Ramirez.
I’m curious, who is your favorite?
Yeah Loo, loving what Wilbur has done so far. And, besides last year playing injured, big love for his contributions. He’s been an excellent Giant. Reflecting back on 2021/107W roster: Wilbur and Donnie Barrels were a lot of fun to watch. But looking at that roster sure makes me wonder how the hell we pulled 107 off with that bunch?
The bore core of Belt, Buster, and Crawfish (and of course John Brebbia) led the way.
Didn’t catch a pitch this aft but checked this thread early (looked 👍) and late (turned 👎). 2nd & 3rd no outs in 8th and we fail to score? Pitiful.
Only yielded 10 runs entire series and couldn’t win single game. If my math is correct (I was history major so all bets are off), Giants have scored 3 or fewer runs in 13 of past 19 games. One bad week forgivable but anemic offense over 19 games sufficient body of work to paint real picture. Dismal.
After Miami, 13 of next 16 games vs LA, SD, Atl & Cleveland. If Posey waits until July to jumpstart offense, may be too late.
a move now and another by the deadline might keep em in the hunt. Otherwise, it’s .500 all over again.
As wobbly as the pitching is, the elephant in the room is the lack of hitting. We have the best era in baseball and are scuffling under .500 after our hot start.
You know, when we were STEALING BASES.
Perfect trading partner in fantasy land for Giants would be…AZ DBax. You could probably put together 2 decent teams btw them if you mixed them all up. AZ has already lost 2 games this season when they have scored 11 runs, and earlier this month lost game to Rox when they scored 12. Last game vs. SF they led 8-2 and almost lost that one.
AZ has lost 4 of 5 including last night in 9-6 L to Pirates. only 3rd time all season Pitt has scored that many.
Their team OPS is .780 (100 points ahead of Giants before today), 3rd NL behind only LA and Cubs. Those are only 2 NL teams that score more runs they do (5 a game on average). And yet they’re game under .500.
Willie and anybody else:
What do you think of the plus/minus stat that’s become so popular in the NBA? I’m not a big believer…
With you on that Loo, especially for numbers from only one game. And you’re right it’s everywhere, even for bench guys. such as “these are the +- numbers when he’s with this group” which supposedly tells you how well one guy fits or not. Not buying it.
Sometimes it makes sense, other times it’s waaaay off. Podz has some weird lookng numbers when he’s not doing much.
Get O’Hearn from the hapless helpless O’s. He’s on the last year of his deal. He can play the OF as well.
Give ’em Dirty Harry. We can deal one of our starters. It’s ridiculous they didn’t try to fix 1st base.
Man, April sure was a FUN month of baseball! I’ve still a little residual glow from that. The back to back series sweep of the Astros & Seattle, taking 2 of 3 from the Yanks in their house, and the split with the Phillies. So much good stuff! We were going great guns until we ran into the Twins. Seems it’s been downhill from there.
The series loss to the Angels at the end of that east coast swing through NY & Phi was odd. The first game we lost 2-zip, and the team looked dead on their feet. That was a grueling road trip. Day game in Philly then back to the West coast. We won the next game against Angels and we should have won the last, but Walker gave up 4 runs in the 9th.
This month has been fucking rough. I read the interview with Bomel saying he thinks Giants are in a great position at the 1/3rd mark of season. I agree, as long as we can kick the shit outta Miami and, at the very least, finish May at .500, or a couple games over if we sweep them. Go Giants!
The Pirates put up 10 today vs. DBax who have lost 7 of 8. 19 runs in 2 days for freakin Pirates, unreal.
Don’t worry, help is coming soon from Sacto — Marco Luciano is playing 1B for the 1st time in his career! My goodness, they’ve tried this guy at practically every position possible. Not really sure why they keep at it, as his bat, while occasionally showing some life, really ain’t all that. Sure, fine, try him at 1B. I think we can guess how that will go…
This team does the stupidest shit. Maybe Unlucky Luciano can back up Bailey if 1st doesn’t work out.
What the actual fuck? Eldridge may not be ready yet, but we have no 1st basemen anywhere that can play a few?
Like I said, get O’Hearn. Luciano is an absolute joke at 1st.
No way in hell AZ trades with us, Willie.
