A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Hoping For Hope

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on May 28, 2025

Bringing JerarE back aboard is fine but it’s silly to think he’s going to be some type of offensive savior. We could bring Skip Pitlock back for a few pinch hits and hope for a second career bomb too, but is that a reasonable move? I honestly think I’d rather see Pitlock take some at bats away from Wade at this point. Speaking of The Skipper I reached out to him to ask him about that solo dinger but didn’t hear back.

The best thing about JerarE coming back COULD be the the df’A of Late Night Lamonte which is so past overdue, there are no words to describe…..

Jerar’s defensive debts may cancel his offensive assets but let’s see. And let’s work on a big mid season move. But no mas LaMonte.

and of course LaMonte starts at 1B today. Why? Schmitt can’t do worse.

Didn’t see much after first couple innings that didn’t go Webb’s way and flores got tough break on long ball he hit to wall. Baseball is hard even for best players–just read story in TA about Tatis Jr. who got off to great start but was having awful May, hitting .184 with .620 OPS and 25 Ks in 22 games. He agreed problems were both mechanical and mental.

not making excuses for Wade Jr. but yes he’s hardly the only problem and just bringing back Encarnacion won’t solve much. “Tip of the iceberg” I think was how Blade put it.

Saw story in Chron that said something about (lack of) running game. Fitz (who leads them with 6) said he got red light couple times. Melvin quotes make it seem like he’s more into running when Giants have lead as opposed to when they are behind in game.

iirc 70% is about cut off rate (might be higher idk) for whether SBs actually help team or not. Giants currently 26-12 so right around there as a team.

Like I said at the end of the thread last night, this could be a good to outstanding road trip, if they can beat Detroit today; and, then win 2 of 3 or sweep the crappy Marlins. All of this is doable.

June will be where the Giants “separate the wheat from the chaff,” i.e., show the league, fans, and MLB experts that they’re for real and not an “also ran.”

Wade Jr would of been a “Superstar “ back in 1978 at 1B after McCovey combination of age (40) and was injured ( played 108 games) the Giants thought they had his replacement in Skip James “The Albino Wonder” at 1B..

I went to a lot of games that year with some buddies and we ragged on him hard he couldn’t even hit batting practice pitchers!

I remember Mike ivie at 1B in 78. Saw him whiff vs the bums in my first visit to Candlestick. Bases loaded, too. McCovey cast some shade his way iirc. He’s no phenom. Something like that.

the great blues man Skip James eventually received royalties from Cream’s cover of Im So Glad. 1B Skip? No recall.

Yeah the Giants actually went 89-73 in 78 good for only 3rd place under The Italian Sausage Joe Autobelli a fun manager. They had Madlock3B,LeMaster SS, Evans mostly 1B/LF ,out field of The Ripper Jack Clark,Terry Whitfield,Larry Herndon all young ,all good,They had Vida,Knepper(17-11) that year,The Count of Montofusco ( sp) ,Lavelle&Minton in the pen they did well overall, hell winning 89 games usually would get it done except for the freaking Dodgers& maybe Braves?

  18. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on May 28, 2025 at 11:27 am

Ramos homer was great. But, this team can’t rely on homers all season to bail it out of it’s scoring woes. The bottom third of the lineup is an disaster area, and the top 6 spots are nothing special, not a lot of power or average there. Two real bats are needed, at least one at 1b, desperately.

  45. willedav's avatar willedav said, on May 28, 2025 at 1:29 pm

Roupp ala Birds faceplants in 5th after 80 pitches. Eerily similar, walk to Gleyber Torres ruins inning. Sure chapman error to start inning hurt but after that he allowed next 3 more guys on base. Walking Torres, throwing him 4 curveballs (only 1 for a strike) is same BS that did Birds in. Error made 3 of runs unearned but that’s totally misleading.

Saw brief postgame with him and he admitted he has to throw strikes. Ya think? All these young stud guys with 95+ heat trying to be Greg Maddux drives me crazy.

Verlander at least goes down throwing the heat, after more pitches and more innings, and battles.

    • bassbaldy's avatar bassbaldy said, on May 28, 2025 at 1:48 pm

As usual Willedav, you are making me think. Thank You! Checking box score, our collective pitching effort produced 16ks. That’s pretty good, I think?!? Sure, young arms are struggling to go deep in games, but sheesh, the hitting (especially so RISP) seems to be the gigantic red flag flapping in the breeze here.

We totaled 12 runs in the six games vs Nats & Det. One step back to the KC series gave us total 20 runs in the 3 series/9games. Including KC we were just over 2 runs per. Looking at only the Nat & Det series we’ve slipped to 2 runs. 2 runs per game ain’t gonna cut it bro!

      • willedav's avatar willedav said, on May 28, 2025 at 3:10 pm

Oh yeah, definitely. Finding couple bats from trade market though I think will be lot tougher than fans think. How many really good hitters on chump non contending teams are really available to be Giants next Marco Scutaro? Firing hitting coach is one of lamest moves any struggling team makes.

my fantasy as manager for a day is handing ball to the SP and telling him, “by the way I disconnected the phone to the pen. so you’re going 9 today.”

      • bassbaldy's avatar bassbaldy said, on May 28, 2025 at 4:04 pm

Absolutely right on W. Finding a quality bat through trade markets is probably a fantasy .. and as we say every year, we got no one to trade that anyone wants. Didn’t Texas fire their hitting coach a few weeks ago? I was surprised by that move considering the HC was probably Bochy’s hand picked guy. And (Ha!) love your managerial strategy. I bet Webb & Verlander (when healthy) wouldn’t flinch .. they’d be like, “yeah, now you’re talking, Let’s Go!”

Didn’t catch a pitch this aft but checked this thread early (looked 👍) and late (turned 👎). 2nd & 3rd no outs in 8th and we fail to score? Pitiful.

Only yielded 10 runs entire series and couldn’t win single game. If my math is correct (I was history major so all bets are off), Giants have scored 3 or fewer runs in 13 of past 19 games. One bad week forgivable but anemic offense over 19 games sufficient body of work to paint real picture. Dismal.

After Miami, 13 of next 16 games vs LA, SD, Atl & Cleveland. If Posey waits until July to jumpstart offense, may be too late.

Perfect trading partner in fantasy land for Giants would be…AZ DBax. You could probably put together 2 decent teams btw them if you mixed them all up. AZ has already lost 2 games this season when they have scored 11 runs, and earlier this month lost game to Rox when they scored 12. Last game vs. SF they led 8-2 and almost lost that one.

AZ has lost 4 of 5 including last night in 9-6 L to Pirates. only 3rd time all season Pitt has scored that many.

    • willedav's avatar willedav said, on May 28, 2025 at 4:16 pm

Their team OPS is .780 (100 points ahead of Giants before today), 3rd NL behind only LA and Cubs. Those are only 2 NL teams that score more runs they do (5 a game on average). And yet they’re game under .500.

Man, April sure was a FUN month of baseball!  I’ve still a little residual glow from that. The back to back series sweep of the Astros & Seattle, taking 2 of 3 from the Yanks in their house, and the split with the Phillies. So much good stuff! We were going great guns until we ran into the Twins. Seems it’s been downhill from there.

The series loss to the Angels at the end of that east coast swing through NY & Phi was odd. The first game we lost 2-zip, and the team looked dead on their feet. That was a grueling road trip. Day game in Philly then back to the West coast. We won the next game against Angels and we should have won the last, but Walker gave up 4 runs in the 9th.

This month has been fucking rough. I read the interview with Bomel saying he thinks Giants are in a great position at the 1/3rd mark of season. I agree, as long as we can kick the shit outta Miami and, at the very least, finish May at .500, or a couple games over if we sweep them. Go Giants!
