A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

A Win Is A Win But….

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on May 31, 2025

Can’t rely on your pitching staff to shut teams out to win games. On the cusp of June 1, who are the obvious culprits? Wade is #1. Bailey and Adames are right behind him. This Adames thing is irritating. He’s never going to hit for average but 5 bombs? In 220 at bats? What the fuck man?

Anyway, that’s 3 of your 9 hitters and it’s not like the other 6 are threatening to win a triple crown. They just look like they are compared to Wade, Bailey and Adames…..

Why bring in now a guy who doesn’t strike people out, with the bags loaded? And, the wacky pop grounder…

Rogers K rate per 9 of 8.8 per B/R is actually higher than Walker Miller and Doval. Seriously.

Was surprised Walker was in there early though. guess no Rodriguez today.

  2. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on June 1, 2025 at 12:48 pm

Wow, sweating heavily there. Rogers playing with fire, got it done with minimal damage.

    • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on June 1, 2025 at 12:52 pm

Head scratcher, but Rogers did get it done. Giants doing some weird things, but destined to win this game (it seems).

I think Melvin felt he had to use Walker early to put out the fire when Birdie ran out of gas. That move set up the Hicks appearance later. If Hicks had handed out those walks then with two on, it would have been brutal, so probably a good decision by Melvin. I’m guessing he had to bring in Hicks because Rodriguez isn’t available or at least won’t be called upon unless dire situation arises.

From what I’ve heard in Buster and Minasian interviews, they said the equivalent that Hicks was not thrilled being busted down to a Pen member. Sounded much like winking that he’s very pissed off. He just pitched like his head is not in a good place…

Maybe Ramos likes leadoff–he leads team in OB (.360) after getting on 3 times today.

    Next highest Chapman .358

    Yaz .338 (3-38 slump)

    Fitz .328.

Last time I looked on B/R Giants bottom 3-4 NL for OB.

Stats tell the whole story of the Giants Offensive woes of all 30 teams and of course the Dogpile is number 1 are 2 in every category!

    Giants

    OPS 24th .684

    Average 25th .233

    HR’s 21th 57

    RBI’s 17th .237

    Runs 16th .248

    Hits 24th .454

Without outstanding overall pitching this team would of been cooked already..

Luciano in LF 0-4 struck out twice . BA .212 OPS .729

McCray CF 0-5 struck out 3 times BA .240 OPS .666

Hicks should’ve been traded in the offseason, they don’t need him and he just clogs things up. You don’t go ahead and make a reliever a starter just because he wants to be a starter, that was never gonna work. Somebody still might trade for him, fireballers are always marketable to some extent.

I’m still eagerly awaiting the next Luciano appearance…. haha.

    • willedav's avatar willedav said, on June 2, 2025 at 4:14 pm

      Might be different vs. LHP.

Padres have their own Wade, tyler playing LF. Career .220 hitter. this year slash line .246/.350/.290. Takes lot of walks, 0 HRs 1 2b 1 3b in 69 ABs so far…minus WAR guy.

      • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on June 2, 2025 at 5:19 pm

That guy is Babe Ruth compared to Wade’s season to-date line of shame:

        .167/.271/.271

The same last two numbers is not a typo.

  43. alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 said, on June 2, 2025 at 4:43 pm

Except the Padres don’t have a starting LHP Willied so Wade’s leash stays on for now..

  44. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on June 2, 2025 at 5:12 pm

I think its OK to send Matos down. He wasn’t getting enough play, just dying on the vine after a good offseason in Winter Ball and a good Spring Training. Giants are jacking him around too much, but he’s gotta play somewhere. Meanwhile, Giants playing a “Waiting for [Wade] Hits” game, keeping the guy around. Because he’s a lefty? Is it better to have a shitty LH bat in the lineup just to have a LH bat to face RHPs, or better to have a fair to decent RH bat instead?

  45. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on June 2, 2025 at 5:24 pm

Speaking of jacking guys around — the Giants putting Luciano at first in Sac is IMO kinda the last straw in his mismanagement. What is this, 6 years+ into his stint in the Giants farm system? And, NOW they’re trying him at 1b? After years at SS, after an OF effort, now 1B? He can hit — maybe they won’t re-sign Wilmer and give him a shot at the next DH. He’s got no more positions to try…

  46. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on June 2, 2025 at 5:27 pm

Both Pads and SF pretty much leaking oil, not hitting much, coming into this series. Sets up like a split 2-2 …

  47. blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on June 2, 2025 at 6:30 pm

The reality is that Matos, Wisely, McCray, Meckler, Luciano, Basabe, etc. (all on the Giants 40 man roster), will never stick in the majors . . . Consequently, the River Cats fill ONE role, to provide a “Hail Mary” player for Giants players injured or doing worse than they are, e.g., Wade.

To date, none of these guys have shown they can play consistently in the show. We will really be in trouble (like last year) if we have to replace a catcher. We have none in reserve, besides Huff and Bailey, i.e., we’ll do what we did last year, where we picked up Murphy off of some other team’s minor league roster (forgot which team he played for).

Yeah, now and then a team has a player who hits well but not great anywhere in the field, and they try and try to find a position for him just to get his bat into the lineup. Someone in the FO sees something in Unlucky Luci; maybe this last shot will be the one. Probably not. And yes, Steve, I’ve seen some articles recently saying that actually the Giants bench is a huge weakness, stocked with mediocre “just guys”…

    • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on June 2, 2025 at 6:43 pm

I seriously think that’s why they retain Wade . . . Sans a trade for a 1b player, NO ONE on the River Cats can do better. It’s embarrassing.

  49. willedav's avatar willedav said, on June 2, 2025 at 6:54 pm

Context matters. The Padres just sent up Tatis Jr., certified AS, Arraez 3 time BA champ, and Machado with 349 career bombs/.827 OPS over 14 years. All 3 head and shoulders above just about everyone in Giants uniform.

And yet they are unable to score more runs than the Giants this season. Because just like SF, most of the roster isn’t hitting.

    • Paul Sorensen's avatar Paul Sorensen said, on June 2, 2025 at 6:57 pm

Which is exactly why the Giants need to bolster their lineup now, while they’re within a game of the Pads and they’re not hitting either…. That probably won’t remain the case all season…

    • willedav's avatar willedav said, on June 2, 2025 at 6:58 pm

Giants would take any of those guys in heartbeat to play RF 1b and DH in Machado’s case.

  50. willedav's avatar willedav said, on June 2, 2025 at 6:55 pm

    • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on June 2, 2025 at 7:12 pm

More appropriately, they are now winning with pitching, just like the Giants do, with the expectation that their entire squad will be hitting much, much better by August and September. I can’t confidently say that about our squad. Equally important, that GM has a history of making significant moves at the trade deadline to improve his squad.

Here’s another example, the Dodgers have the best pitching staff money can buy, but they are doing poorly, with many starters and relievers injured . . . Yet, do you think this team is going to remain that way the entire season? Me? I don’t think so. In the meantime, the Bums have additional “levers” to pull, such as their outstanding hitting. That’s why they are in 1st.

Hey, I hope the Giants can counter these guys moves with moves of their own. We’ll see.

  51. alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 said, on June 2, 2025 at 6:58 pm

Still think catcher Sac Andrew Kinzer would be better at catcher then Sam Huff( yeah Ray’s personal catcher who cares) he has plenty of big league experience with Cardinals mostly but I guess if Xoot is right that he has no options to Sac he sticks..

Biggest Blunder by Farhan is signing Catcher Tom Murphy (34 now)who’s cooked more then Christmas Vacation’s Turkey and their paying this chump and he’s thrilled to get 4M doing absolutely nothing and can’t buy him out till next year at 250K..

Not anymore he got Cained again after an outstanding performance, but when your team doesn’t score you can’t win..

Just wow. Games like this is when Bummie would hit a home run to get the win.

I didn’t realize G’s haven’t beaten SD yet this season. This game is sure set up for a great walk off….

Soo Encarnacion looked like he should go back to minors. Schmidt gets 3 balls a mile out of the strike zone and swings and misses the 4th in a row by a foot. Giving away a strike for free not the best. I literally laughed out loud when he swung and missed!! No way we score in this game. Our best hope was another wild pitch. Hope i am wrong but man it’s hard to see us getting 2 hits in a row…
