A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Jett Johnson

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on June 5, 2025

Can’t say I was that impressed with those 3 moves but Jett Johnson sure showed up to play yesterday. Obviously none of those guys are home grown. Looking at our AAA hitters it is just an absolute wasteland. It’s almost like they tried to put together the shittiest AAA team they could find.

But hey, for 1 day Jett shined. Hope he keeps it up.

this is where Buster needs to tighten up his shit. Wade should have been gone a month ago. Can’t do this job and be “buddies” with these guys and let that color your judgement. Imagine Bill Walsh acting this way. LOL

Needed a replacement. Tried internal options first (Villar Flores Schmitt). No one is trading guys even now, let alone a month ago. Eldridge might force Giants hands if he can hit but 1b is still new to him.

Dominic looked good at 1B — handling all manner of throws and plays like a natural. Helluva wingspan too. Now, if he can hit.

As said here recently, sports world is vastly different from 80s. I’d love to ask K n K, who played for Frank Robinson, what he’d think about fraternization btw Chapman and Machado or Adames bro hugging opposition.

Keith Law had blurb on Eldridge May 29 in Athletic as he talked about top 50 prospects. One thing he mentioned is that at 6-7 he has huge K zone and not lot of hitters that big have prospered in MLB. Current K rate for him is 27%

Yaz.Flores,Webb,Rodgers&Doval so his buddy list is almost over.He should make any trade now and have no guilt trips pulling the trigger on trades

Well, hopefully yesterday unclogged the, uh, bats and this team can start playing ball more consistently. Ramos continues to be an adventure in LF. Jesus.

That’s Ramos’ play unless Adames is calling him off. But Johnson in RF was stellar a play earlier. Let’s hope he’s Yaz 2.0 and can get some hitting going.

And this team would have to tank hard to think about trading Flores to a ‘contender’. Baseball isn’t set up that way now. Everyone is a contender unless you are the Rox, Pirates, or Marlins.

    • xoot's avatar xoot said, on June 5, 2025 at 9:54 am

in post game interview Ramos said that Adames couldn’t hear Ramos calling him off through the crowd noise over there, near the line.

Tony Clark1B was 6’8 played 15years for Tigers and other teams,Hit 251 HR’s 824 RBI’s with career OPS of .824 .Think the Giants would be thrilled to get that are more out of Eldridge..

Clark was a switch hitter the only difference as both are right handed fielding 1B

wood, judge, and O’Neil Cruz, and Elly de la Cruz for that matter seem to announce a new era of huge athletic players. Counterpart of the 100 mph FB so common now. Maybe. Hard to imagine a HS pitcher/DH with their sort of athleticism But we’ll see.

I am relying on Pavlovic’s assertion that Eldridge DH’d in HS.

Just me, but I have zero expectations for Johnson and particularly, Smith. Loo more or less posted Smith’s baseball card versus Wade yesterday; and quite frankly, Wade had him beat 7 ways from Sunday, which is saying a lot. Consequently, I don’t see where Smith will be the answer going forward. He never was with the Mets or any other stop he’s had in the majors.

Johnson, I am more hopeful about, albeit, he’s 29 and thus far hasn’t accomplished anything in the show. However, as I pointed out last night, he got screwed by the “numbers game” in spring training, 4 years ago (https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/31094117/cleveland-indians-option-daniel-johnson-minors-strong-camp).

So, maybe they contribute, which I hope, but the more likely outcome is that Buster/Minasian will be back at it come the trade deadline.

    • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on June 5, 2025 at 11:37 am

Anything at 1st is a stopgap for Eldridge. Who may or may not even make the show this year.

Which is why I thought Alonso was a good idea.

Looking at the eligible players it’s easy to see why the Giants are trying these moves instead with Smith,Johnson,Kizner atleast they have major league experience and some success compared to these guys who haven’t done squat.

    Meckler,Matos,McCray,Wisely,Osabae,Koss, meh why bother

Why would the Orioles want Luciano Chuck? They have SS Henderson &2B Holliday and a pretty overall hitting team. It’s the pitchers who have sucked for them this year.Any trade would involve Whishenhut and the Giants won’t do that.Luciano would be laughed at in only a throw in piece at this point..

Doubtful these 3 new guys will move the offensive needle much over the next month, let alone season. At least a move was made to hopefully shake the torpor off for a couple of games, at least. All 3 have a commonality — none of them were drafted by the Giants. Amazing to me that the Gs continually can’t find short term replacements, let alone long-term real contributors, for the Big Club within their own farm system, or in their system who are home grown, drafted players. 2 months of Wade nothingness with nobody at AAA to come up and hit at least .210 at 1B? Giants have a long-term inability to draft position players who are talented enough to make it as solid major leaguers with the Big Club. Pitchers seemingly are not a drafting problem, but drafting position players — WTF? They’re mutually exclusive? Baseball may be pitching dominated, but 8 of 9 positions on the field are NOT pitchers. I happen to like hitting. Hits lead to baserunning, defensive plays, stolen bases — all AKA exciting baseball. Long stints and even seasons of low hitting and scoring is exhausting, boring ass baseball, day after day, season after season, torture after torture. And, it pressurizes the pitching staff, which is not a good thing. The 2021 miracle club hit well over 200 HRs and scored their asses off, but it was an anomaly with the last guys from the golden years having career years at the same time. The 3 in 5 teams didn’t hit a lot, but they hit opportunistically and decently and smartly with RISP, they weren’t completely bereft of scoring for long periods of time, and weren’t desperately swinging off their asses at crap pitches in scoring situations. The 2002 club was exciting as hell, because they hit a shit ton. If they had the pitching this current club has, that team might have won 110 games, and definitely would have taken out the Angels in the Series.

Giants lose a sure run to score by the infinitely stupid ground-rule double rule. I hate to give umps more discretion, but they should be able to waive in a runner to score on scenarios like that where it is obvious that if the ball had stayed in play, the run would have clearly scored…

From down 5-1 in 5th inning last night to notching two 1 run wins in past 18 hours. Relief pitching (excluding Walker) continues to shine though Doval’s last two 9th inning appearances vs Padres very shaky.

I can’t get excited by Smith & Johnson signings but Wade had to be DFA’d or assigned to Sacramento and Yaz needed to be platooned in RF. Failure of Giants to have any suitable call-ups from minors inexcusable but that’s on Zaidi. Posey’s job is to engineer trade to acquire Rhys Hoskins or Bichette or MLB-tested RF.

Oh well…June swoon at least temporarily avoided with back-to-back wins over Friars.

  31. Dean's avatar Dean said, on June 5, 2025 at 4:24 pm

Glass half empty view…17 of past 18 games Giants have scored 4 runs or less. 14 of past 18 games Giants have scored 3 runs or less. But for stellar starting pitching and shut down performances from relief corps Giants would be on wrong side of .500.

    • willedav's avatar willedav said, on June 5, 2025 at 6:15 pm

I called for the split before the series and that’s what we got. They had to work hard for it, did it the hard way dropping the first two in horrendous fashion. Hopefully the new blood shook up the team with an infusion of some sort of energy. Still Phtttt hitting. Ray is an All Star.

Buster needed to do those moves, such as they are, to show that if you don’t produce, you’re at least eventually not guaranteed a spot…

    • Dean's avatar Dean said, on June 5, 2025 at 5:07 pm

Totally on point with your observation. Yes, Buster needed to send message through clubhouse that continued ineffectiveness has consequences. Wade move expected but I was more pleased by Johnson signing. Overdue for Yaz to be platooned but glad to see Buster actually pulled trigger.

  33. Paul Sorensen's avatar Paul Sorensen said, on June 5, 2025 at 6:02 pm

Yeah, these signings weren’t meant to be exciting, nor to say “ok, all problems are solved now”, but they don’t need to be. They needed to come in and add something that had been missing, and give ’em credit; Johnson yesterday and Smith today, did just that. They’ll probably both be hitting under .250, but as long as it’s not under .200… sheesh. This buys the FO some time for more significant moves. I’m still looking forward to Buster’s first big trade…
