A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Casey Schmitt, goddamn, I’m still watching that defensive play to end the 5th, it was one of the best plays I’ve ever seen a 3rd baseman make.

That umpire was horrible. Don’t matter to our boys.

Getting closer up to throw and then sitting him back down generally regarded as no no. Once Doval (or any vet closer) is ready and warm you use him. So Melvin let him pitch. I have disdain for whole closer/save mentality but it is what it is.

Nice game for Schmitt. idk what his future is. Best position is 3b, but Giants wrong team to be on for him. Hopefully he hits well enough outside of Nepal to be able to stay in lineup once Chapman returns.

Doval had struggled the day before and threw a lot of pitches. That’s my druther. He’s had a roller-coaster season so far and the situation didn’t seem to warrant putting him in. He was erratic, his velocity was way down, and he was on the brink of coughing the game up.

Plus, the ‘book’ is to not use the closer when you get over a 3-run lead. MoTel hasn’t had an issue using others in the closer or game-ender role before. It just didn’t make sense to me.

Agree with you Chuck but as we’ve seen, a 3 run lead at Coors ain’t like a 3 run lead in most other places…

      • willedav's avatar willedav said, on June 12, 2025 at 8:03 am

well said. Melvin could have used someone else to warm up beforehand but chose Doval.

      • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on June 12, 2025 at 9:35 am

Yeah, and Doval almost gurked it up.

    • willedav's avatar willedav said, on June 12, 2025 at 8:06 am

Wasn’t it DelMar Dennis that used to complain about using closer in non save situation?

  3. alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 said, on June 12, 2025 at 9:00 am

I said it last night up 10-6 no reason to use your closer only if of course he started butchering it up like Doval almost did for what I like to somehow get a save out of this?More important to have used someone else and save his arm more for the showdown series against Dogpile now 50 plus pitches in 2 games not good!

Perfect scenario when the pitching coach calls the BP for the bottom only “Lurch picks it up from Thing and says “You Rang”

  4. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on June 12, 2025 at 9:25 am

Yeah. it seemed like a pretty easy call to warm up both Rodriguez and Doval as the Giants were lighting up the scoreboard. Rowdy Roddy hadn’t pitched since Tuesday. And he was the ’emergency’ closer when Walker and Doval were overused/terrible/whatevs.

Beyond that, couldn’t they tell in the pen that Doval’s velocity was way down?

    • djloo27's avatar djloo27 said, on June 12, 2025 at 9:55 am

If El Presidente was still the bullpen catcher, I have no doubt he would’ve picked up on it.

Motel6 makes some strange decisions. Maybe he was somehow thinking ahead to what he might need today, who knows? You should hear all the crap Boone gets here almost daily…

    • willedav's avatar willedav said, on June 12, 2025 at 10:11 am

Getting a guy warmed up in first place isn’t without wear and tear. No reason for 2 elites then.

  5. alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 said, on June 12, 2025 at 9:50 am

I meant to bring in Sean “Highway to Hjelle”alas Lurch, to come in since he was warming up with Doval after they blew it open Chuck..

And another thing that pisses me off with annoying announcers when they say when you’re closer isn’t always the same guy with a big lead over a 1run lead to close out a game! That’s utter BS “Go in there and get the job done” no pussyfooting around that’s what your getting paid for!!!

Damm 2 outs nobody on and the wheels fall off for Birdsong allowing 2 runs lucky it wasn’t worse! Seems like his 4th-5 th innings are sketchy for him?

There you go Mr.Ed leadoff double! Get those runs back..Can’t believe the Rockies are sticking with this guy?

      Terrible.

      Install the auto-ump yesterday.

This is looking like a typical Coors score feat to the very end. Giants need more runs…

Lurch should go get a hand job by Thing.Just another easy disposable piece in the BP

And Miller I don’t know how he continues to be a smoke & mirror pitcher. He’s walked now 18 guys to 17K’s that’s not a good stat.Last year he was striking out a ton of runners not this year..

    • Snarkk's avatar Snarkk said, on June 12, 2025 at 2:42 pm

Miller’s stuff is not impressive at all. He may be the bottom guy on the entire staff. I take Bivens over him…

Anyone else think Adames looks like he could benefit to drop 10 lbs? He got that count to 3-2 then wasted it by swinging at a fastball 6” outside. Like he can’t help swinging at that crap.

Was it Greg Maddux that threw 68 pitches to win a game?

Rodriguez threw 52 pitches in 2/3 of an inning.

  38. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on June 12, 2025 at 3:16 pm

Did M6 get anyone up during that 52 pitch psycho drama? If not he’s really an idiot.
That was a fairly important game. I don’t care who he does or doesn’t trust…

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on June 12, 2025 at 4:37 pm

Yeah, he had Beck up. But, not until pretty far into the drama. Melvin needs to stop messing around with the roles and time in between appearances with the late leverage guys. I think Rodgriguez hadn’t pitched in 3 or 4 days = unusual. Somebody can correct me if I’m wrong on that. It was obvious early on he wasn’t sharp. Overall, IMO I’d take Bochy managing a Pen on a bad day compared to Melvin…

  44. Dean's avatar Dean said, on June 12, 2025 at 5:36 pm

Schmitt’s failure to get out on grounder was death knell in 9th. Rodriguez going 3-2 on every batter and walking two also fatal blow. One damn pitch away from series sweep.

Be interesting to see how Giants stack up with Dodgers this wknd.

  45. James's avatar James said, on June 12, 2025 at 6:01 pm

In 28 appearances this year, Rodriguez had been scored on just one time. Rogers, 3 times in 33.

SF has been incredibly lucky with those two. I expect the rate of failure will go up for both.

  46. mrsprtdude's avatar mrsprtdude said, on June 12, 2025 at 8:38 pm

Players play and Schmidt error and Rodriquez walks a big part of the loss, but so too was Melvin’s stupid decision to use Doval last night. Even if he got out of last night quickly no way he can pitch today. Jelly should have pitched the 9th yesterday. Closers never pitch well in non save situations.

    • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on June 12, 2025 at 10:40 pm

I’d have pitched Roddy last night as he’s been on the shelf a while. Hjelle is fucking toasted turds at this point.

I was just baffled that 20 pitches into Roddy’s ordeal, no one is up and trying to get loose today.
